Aberrant: Stargate Universe - Prologue: The Rescue and aftermath

Mr Fox

Recommended Posts

The command came down to assemble the strike teams, a location had been determined for the NID facility where the SGC captives were being held. Teams were assigned, Omar, Kyria under the command of Captain Caine were assigned to one team and given the task of rescuing the prisoners. Major Logan was assigned another squad that included Lt Mark Jacobs and Sgt Elijah Simms, their task was to secure the artifact. Other squads were to be deployed to secure the perimeter and prevent escape.

Each squad member checked their weapons and gear one last time as they assembled in the gate room for transport. As before any battle or potential conflict soldiers dealt with the nervousness and anticipation in their own ways. The one thing that was constant among all the squads was the silence. As if talking might jinx the mission no soldier said a word. Finally one squad at a time disappeared in a vertical streak of white light until the gate room was empty. When the last group of soldiers was gone O'neil turned to looked over at Carter, "I hate not being there with them." Carter just gave him a sympathetic look no doubt feeling the same way.

Aboard the Prometheus the soldiers appeared with the same streak of light and a small almost mechanical sound. An Asgard with his distinctive 'Grey' body worked the controls but said nothing and his expression was impossible to determine. The members of the various squads had only a few seconds to marvel at the interior of one of Earth's very first starships before being beamed to their target destination.

The first rule of combat: No plan survives the first clash with the enemy.

The first squad made it into the facility without difficulty beaming directly to their target destination. Then shielding sprang up around a portion of the facility preventing further beaming within the shield. The Asgard operating looked to his human counterpart and ask, "The area the building containing the device is now shielded. What do you wish me to do?" The frustrated human working with the Asgard, responded in an annoyed tone, "Well, beam them as close as possible."

That was all the soldiers had time to hear before they were transported down to other parts of the old VA hospital.

Team Alpha:

Alpha team found themselves in a restroom with multiple stalls and urinals along one wall that looked unused and smelled like it hadn't been cleaned in years, which in all likelihood it had not. By the plans that Major Logan had been given, her squad was most likely at the rear of the building and by the unused look of the restroom was most likely on the 5th floor since that floor was thought to be abandoned.

Team Romeo:

Romeo team landed in the middle of what looked like an operating room, but what was on the table was no surgery, it was an autopsy, only the patient or victim seemed to be still alive, if only barely. The doctor performing the living autopsy took one look at the soldiers and pressed quickly reached for a button. The victim on the operating table went into immediate violent convulsions that ended after a few seconds as the monitors in the room stopped beeping with a long sustained whine. The doctor then turned to flee through a door at one side of the room.

Samuel Lawrence:

Samuel was not aware of the alarms sounding throughout the building that his body was sitting in. The first he was aware anything was wrong was when the current firewall he was trying to breach just crumbled and all the data beyond just seemed to evaporate. The collapse of the data structures was advancing menacingly toward him. Had he been discovered? Had he tripped some kind of alarm or fail safe? Regardless he had just seconds to get out or... or what? What might happen if he were inside the computer when it died?

(((SGC) rolls 5d10 and gets 10,5,3,7,10. rolls 1d10 and gets 3. Total successes: 3))

With great relief and feeling like it might have been dangerous to him had he not escaped, Samuel came back to himself and heard a real live alarm siren. Something was definitely going on and the NID had launched emergency protocols. The computers were self-destructing. That was what had nearly trapped him.

Dr Soie:

Dr. Soie was was just about to sit down and get comfortable for a chat with Mr. Clarkson when alarms sounded. Before he could catch himself and regain his composure he blurted, "What the hell?" Then he was back to being the slick administrator. In quick succession he pulled out a keyboard from his desk drawer and initiated a long series of keystrokes, then pressed a button on his intercom, "We have uninvited visitors, this is not a drill. Code Jackson. I repeat Code Jackson." After that he stood straightening his jacket and looked over at Dr. Soie with a smile that was a bit forced, "Doctor, if you would care to join me? I believe it might be prudent to move to a safer location." With that he took Soie's arm and almost forcibly led her across the hall and down two doors to the room that was always kept guarded. Soie was surprised to find that the only object the room contained was a very large stone statue of some kind. Two soldiers were already present and fitting small grey devices to the stone.

Clarkson looked at the two men, "I want that left until last. Do not destroy it unless there is no other option, understood?" The men nodded and saluted. Clarkson turned back to Dr. Soie, "Doctor. I would appreciate it if you would wait here for the moment. This is the safest place in the facility and these two men will accompany you to our fallback location should enemies breach the inner defenses." With another slick smile Clarkson moved away toward a plain wall and pushed. A panel opened revealing a small opening that he had to stoop to get through. He closed the concealed exit behind him and there was a barely audible click as if a bolt had been thrown on the other side.

Prisoners: (Declan, Walker, Courier, Jones, Wright, Eckhart, Jauntsen, Fischer)

In the haste to make a clean getaway Clarkson failed to distinguish between prisoners or volunteers in his orders. Or perhaps it was not a failure on his part, perhaps it was intentional. Regardless, the orders came down to the guards on the 'observation' rooms, "Eliminate any evidence." In the NID this meant leave no one alive to talk and if possible destroy the remains to avoid identification. All up and down the hallway the locks on doors mechanically released and the guards turned to do their duty. Into each room two men walked weapons raised and ready to fire. The sound of automatic weapons could be heard throughout the building. In some rooms this was followed by the placement of incendiary grenades. Soon fire alarms were adding their own wails to the already blaring security sirens.

Caine turned and Zatted the bastard in the white jacket in the back. He wouldn't dignify him with the title of doctor.

"Come on people," he commands calmly. Let's get to the stair well and up to the next floor. That's were our targts are. Leave the guards were they drop, or if they are running, let them run. We've got to save the prisoners. Now let's move."

Looking to Kyria,

"Can you sense minds? If so, I need to know what guards are in our way."

To Omar,

"General O'Neil says your something like bullet proof. If you care to prove it, plow us a way to the stairwell."

Kyria nodded, all of her childish misbehavior over the past two weeks disappearing the moment she was approached about joining the rescue mission. Her eyes flicked to the doctor and then back to the Captain.

"I can try. It is more difficult here at times than I am used to." As she spoke she reached out with her mind to the building, trying to feel for the minds that were certainly there.

Omar gave Kyria a wink before turning to the Captain with a big grin on his face. "It would be my pleasure."

Omar opens the door and runs towards the stairwell. Anyone in his path is slammed into.

Omar sees two guards and hurtles towards them. His large body is easily large enough to encompass both me.

He slams into both guards. One poor unfortunate figure tried to move away, but only ended up leaning his head into Omar's shoulder. It snapped. The other one flew backwards some ten yards before coming to rest near the stairwell. His body was limp like cooked spaghetti, but he still lived. The one who's neck made the snapping noise was obviously ruined, his neck arched at a odd angle from his trunk.

Omar pulled up short and turned around with a look of obvious joy spread from ear to ear.

"Stop your grinning and keep rolling," Damien said with the faintest trace of a smile. "Still one floor to go."

He took the lead and ran for the entrance to the stairwell. He threw the door open and took a quick peek around the corner. Motioning Kyria to hold up, he made ready to charge up the one, long flight of stairs.

Damien smiles back at Kyria.

"Thanks, but the decision making is my cross to bear. I can only see things by taking the lead. Trust me. I'll use you two when the opportunity demands. Right now can you tell me if there are guards at the top of the stairs?"

To Omar,

"Once we get to the top, I'll take a quick look around. If everything looks as expected, you run down the hallway striking who you can and then moving into the fifth door. Kyria and I will follow up, dealing with any guards you have left behind."

Heading up the stairs, Damien takes point. Half way up, he throat-mics to Kyria.

"When we get to the top, I want you to make sure the people we rescue aren't guards in disguise. That last thing we need are weapons at the back of our heads."

"Not a problem." Omar's face became serious, although a hint of a smile still remained.

Omar smashes through the door and slams his fists to the side. He hopes Kyria is right about the guards' locations.

The door was actually knocked completely from its hinges as Omar put his strength into it. The two guards were facing the door and prepared to fire should intruders come through. They didn't expect this however, and were caught flat footed. Then Omar's strikes flew to each side at the same time, the man on the right took a pretty solid hit and bounced off the wall behind him, but managed to remain conscious. The man on the left was lucky and the big fist missed.

BGs init: 12 (were holding action from previous round)

Captain Caine: 17

Omar: 10

Kyria: 13

The guard that wasn't hit pulled his trigger spraying bullets at the huge man in front of him. Perhaps because of his fright at having the door blow off it's hinges most of his rounds missed, but even the ones that did simply bounced off. Omar threw his head back and laughed.

((Caine and Kyria still have actions left this round. However, everyone else on this floor is still in round 1. Do not take any actions beyond disabling the guard until I let you know that time has caught up to you.))

Caine came around the corner and fired the Zat point blank into the firing guards chest. Not waiting to see if the guard was down, he stepped out and looked up the corridor through the dust of the ruined doorframe to see how many other guards were left, if any.

Kyria followed after Caine, making her way quietly into the first room off the hallway. The door had been left open and as she stepped in she took in the badly shot man and the two holding guns. She let her P90 hang on it's strap and stepped up behind the two men. Almost casually, the slender teen in SGC BDU's lifted both of them off the floor and bashed them together.

Omar activates his speed and rushes to the door farthest down the hallway and opens it. With luck the prisoner would still be alive and the enemy would turn their atttention to him. Seeing the kid run ... through, around, or whatever by them caused Caine to call out over his mic.

"Kyria, see if you can get that kid to calm down and hide some place. Tell him we are the US Military and we are here to save his ass."

Beyond that, there wasn't much he could do for the Flash. He, Kyria and Omar were getting split up. Without knowing what strength that opposition was in was not good.

"Omar, hold there. Kyria and I have to catch up."

Damien began moving down the hallway, looking in the doors to see what was going on, if there was a patient down, or some guards down, and react accordingly. Prime mission was still to save prisoners, not to show off.

Taylor looks up at the young woman (Kyria). "Uh...well, yes. I think so." He tries to stand. He wobbles for a moment, before actually managing to maintain his posture. He gives a weak, but genuine smile to the young woman. He takes a tentative step, then another. "Yes, I believe I can."

A puff of blood soaked feathes and foam blows out of the next doorway in front of Caine quickly followed by a man cautiously looking aout from the same doorway. He is covered in blood, holding a rifle pointed towards the ground, but not in the uniform of the guards.

Seeing the different uniforms on the guy approaching the door, Gwyn is careful to keep the gun pointed away from him, at least until he can find out whats going on.

"You the guys that caused the alarm to go off are you? Well thanks a lot! That's whats started them trying to kill everyone! And they've got this building rigged to blow on command, so what ever you came here to do you better make it snappy!"

Omar holds up. He didn't like it when others second guessed his judgement. He had been doing this sort of thing for a century. Still, until he was put in charge, he had to take orders. It didn't mean he had to like it. The smile that was on his face, vanished.

His deep voice filled with mild frustration. "Would you rather we go into each room together, or split up and save as many as possible?"

All was chaos as Sergeant Declan Perault, U.S. Rangers (retired) backed out from his cell into the hallway. He was aware of everything around him: the retreating guard down the hall, the strangers, not in black fatigues, that seemed to be attacking this place. He heard gunfire mixed with strange zapping sounds and the crying of wounded and dying men and flinched despite the calm analytical part of him that seemed to be overlaying his thoughts.

With a hard shove, he threw the man he was holding back into the cell that had been his and slammed the door, breaking off the handle on this side with a wrenching motion. The three assailants in the room wouldn't be any trouble in there. The running guard was another matter though, Declan's elevated tactical sense told him. The runner could gather reinforcements, or perhaps gain enough distance to feel safe and re-engage him. He should be stopped.

Thought became action performed at the speed of thought and his left arm snapped out to the side as if of it's own accord. Without looking round, Declan fired a three-round burst at a distance of 15 metres straight into the fleeing man's right leg.

The running man went down with an ear-splitting scream as Declan turned towards the strangers, something cold behind those silver eyes giving the appraising gaze a chilling quality. The sleek, lethal shape of the SMG seemed a natural extension of his left arm and hand as it pointed at the floor by his feet.

His combat conditioning still in control, Declan's voice was calm and clipped as he hailed the strangers.

"Who are you people? Friend or foe?"

Walker found nothing but chaos in the hall, but that was not really a surprise. From the moment the alarms sounded and his guards came barging into his cell with guns raised this entire situation had stunk of a Spec-Op gone wrong - and this was exactly what a Spec-Op gone wrong looked like.

There are exactly seventy definitve Rules of Combat, along with five Conjunctions of Combat, three Rules of Combat Medicine, and precisely eight Easy Steps for Combat Survival. "No plan survives the first contact intact", was the seventh rule, but Walker had always thought it should be moved up to number one - and the current tableau did an admirable job of explaining why.

Having said that, the big guy surging down the hall like a freight train - and moving about that fast, too - the kid busting out of his own cell, screaming like a lunatic and then pulling his little vanishing act, and finally the slightly unhinged-looking killer who'd just appeared were all combining to make this into so much more than just a botched Mil Spec-Op. Walker decided that staying out of sight for just a bit longer might be a good idea.

Rule number fifteen: "don't look conspicuous... it draws fire."

The fleeing NID guard with the wounded arm was just coming alongside Walker when Declan raised his weapon and shot the man in the leg. Walker had seen it coming, and did not so much as look in the soldier's direction as he went down, continuing unseen and deliberate towards the far end of the hall where Caine and Omar seemed to be making some efforts towards rescuing a few prisoners. Walker had plans to be one of them, though he was still unsure of when, or whether, he should reveal his presence to this group of strange strangers.

Rule number three: "you are not a superman."

Yeah, might be time to strike that one off the list...

Kyria blinked in total surprise as the man she was speaking to reached out to her mind and past her mental shields to ensure himself that she was one of the 'good guys'.

You're a telepath? What is this, N-day? Yes, we're the good guys, we're here to help. Right now, my team needs help. Stay put. We'll be sending others here to you, and then we'll all be leaving. Her thoughts flowed easily to him as he picked up her name, that she sincerely was here to help, and that she was somewhat excited to have another actual telepath around so General Oneill would have someone else to yell at for being in other people's minds.

As the exchange occurred she made her way to the door of the room, ducking her head out to see exactly what was going on on the floor now and where she was needed. "Captain? How many more rooms? Where do you want me?"

He wasn't even winded as well as quite calm. His body wasn't producing any toxins that brought on fatigue and his senses all seemed particularly sharp. Every voice, every boot step crunching on broken glass. Even now, almost hundred feet away and through three walls he could hear the men he crushed with the bed pushing it off of them and grunting softly in an attempt to regain their composure. On top of it all, he didn't even want to begin to unravel the mystery of his sudden 'jaunt' through the two armed men in the hallway a moment prior.

He had to get out of here, away from this madness. He focused on the sounds all around him and blocked them out, turning his own perceptions inward. Calmly his heart beat filled his ears with a faint echo.

If he just kept cool, everything would be alright.
