Big Eyes, Small Mouth (BESM): In the Shadows of the City - Chapter 1: The First Gathering

Justin OOC

Recommended Posts

Jim could only shake his head as Kaori leaps forward to meet the Hellhounds.

I hate to think what her grandfather is going to make of this. Fluffing an attack because she was protecting her modesty then running off from a defensible line and possibly blocking Skye from taking more out at range before they reached us. Oh well, I suppose I'll have to make sure I survive to tell him first.

Making sure he goes for one on the sides away from Kaori, Jim fires for the final time then readies his sword for his defence.

Kazuo whipped back around at the sound of his screaming companions. It was probably a good thing that he'd always been the sort of person who simply reacted to whatever was in front of him, rather than thinking the situation through carefully and then taking action. Because if he'd been the latter sort, he most likely would have been frozen in shock and/or terror at the sight of the three slavering, blood-drenched creatures standing over what used to be three gangbangers.

Instead Kazuo just screamed and lunged, striking out with both of his weapons at the two closest hounds. He had no technique or training, just raw talent, years of experience on the street, and (gods willing) some luck. Kazuo still hadn't quite adapted to only having one eye, so he wasn't sure what he'd hit - if anything - so he reigned himself in and pulled back, ready to (try) and keep from getting torn to shreds (again).

Dice rolls for Initiative, both Attacks, and his Defense are below:

Click to reveal..
(21:49:33) ChatBot: (whitearrow) rolls 2d6 and gets 2,4.

(21:49:54) (whitearrow): So that's initiative

(21:50:17) (whitearrow): Total is... 5+3+2+4=14

(21:51:23) (whitearrow): So 14 for Init

(21:54:01) (whitearrow): Now I need to make two attack rolls. Which is... ((thinks real hard trying to remember all the modifiers))... 2d6 + (-2, for making two attacks with two weapons) + BaseAttack 5 + Melee Attack 1 = 2d6+4. Not the most respectable attack number, but it'll have to do, I guess.

(21:54:14) ChatBot: (whitearrow) rolls 2d6 and gets 5,4.

(21:54:19) ChatBot: (whitearrow) rolls 2d6 and gets 2,3.

(21:54:27) (whitearrow): Ok, there's the attack rolls.

(21:54:49) (whitearrow): So that's 13 for the first, and a whopping 9 for the second.

(21:55:58) (whitearrow): Now I need to roll Defense. Which is... 2d6 + BaseDefense 5 + Melee Defense 1 = 2d6+6

(21:56:03) ChatBot: (whitearrow) rolls 2d6 and gets 6,6.

(21:56:06) (whitearrow): wow

(21:56:13) (whitearrow): So that's an 18, then.

((OOC: It occurred to me today that I took what you said literally, Justin, and rolled "Defense" - as in, only 1 defensive roll for Kazuo. Since there's three hounds I probably should have rolled more than once for him, huh? If that's the case, you (Justin) have my full permission to roll Kazuo's defense again if need be, or if I'm around you can just tell me to, and I'll be happy to oblige. I'd just do it myself right now, but I don't want to give the impression that I'm going back and altering already posted dice rolls.))

Kage surveyed the trio of hounds that broke off to attack him and swung his chain again, trying to take out the one that looked most likely to circle behind him. At least, in his opinion. He wasn't great at sizing up dogs' tactical inclinations.

Kenichi was minding his own busines as he went home from school, or rather, he went home from having skipped school. He had been on the way to an american resutaurant he knew, somehow beating the crap out of gangs always made him feel very hungry.

He was going to buy himself some stake with the money he got from the gang, and he passed a couple of weird foreigners who were talking loudly while walking, he didnd't mind that much except that as he turned the corner, he heard a clear voice calling to him, telling him to...pick yo his destiny because he had powers?

Wathever, Kenichi was going to ignore it until he heard shots coming from the street he was just on, coming back he could see several shadow like beings and then one of them went splat when the one of the foreigners took out a gun and shot at the creature, but a couple more were left. Thinking on his feet, Kenichi took out a manhole cover from the ground, testing it's weight he threw it like a discuss at the beasts to see if he could give the others a helping hand.

Kazuo managed to hit with the first blade, but missed the hound to his right. The first one died as the blade decapitated it, and the second lunged in, it's jaws snapping only at air.

---------------

KAge picked his target well, and the chain lashed out andtore a huge chunk out of the chest of one of the hounds before it disintegrated. The other 2 moved in to attack him.

(First defense with no penalty, second with -1 to the roll please. You need to beat or meet 14 and 13 respectively)

---------------

Kenichi's attack suprises the hellhound as the manhole cover sawed straight through it and imbedded itself into the cement wall at the end of the street.

It barely took Ken a moment to know what he had to do. It entailed losing his mind.

This is Crazy! This is Crazy! This is Crazy! he thought as he went racing toward the hounds on Kaori's heels, screaming at the top of his lungs. As one hound moved to circle around her, Ken intercepted it and lashed out with the sword with a vicious chop and a martial shout.

Adrian's attack hacks deep into the side of one deomn suprising it and immediately attacks him, but misses with a rake of its claws.

Kage isn't so lucky as he manages to avoide the first set of snapping jaws, but the second catches him around the leg, tearing his pant and seending a shaft of pain up his leg.

They were closer, infinitely so. Skye wanted to scream - and never, ever stop - but she was still under the strange power that controlled her. Her eyes glowed a brilliant sapphire as more and more of her was subsumed by the powers. She danced backwards, her hair floating around her in a mad whirlwind as she almost drifted on the wind. Gaining some more room between the hellhounds and herself, she whipped the attacking Tessen around and struck again, screaming, "KamiKaze, Wrath of the Northern Wind!"

Shards of ice accompanied the wind this time, tearing into a monster and making it dissipate around them. The shards swiftly melted, leaving nothing behind.

The first hound went down and Kazuo felt a cold thrill of satisfaction as his blade sliced through its throat, but the second avoided his swing, triggering a blood rage in him the likes of which he'd never felt. Kazuo would've sworn he was going to go deaf, the blood was rushing so loudly in his ears.

These things were dead! He didn't care what it took, these abominations - these insults - were friggin' dead!

Kazuo didn't bother stopping to consider why he was angry, he just let out another yell and swung for all he was worth, and this time he made no attempt to pull back or 'play it safe'. If he had his way, these ugly bastards would both be dead in a second anyway, and if they weren't - well he'd deal with that problem when it arrived...

Shin looks down at the manhole cover lying on the ground, then turns and looks in the direction it came from, "The last one was mine..." He notices Kenichi and shrugs. "Whatever." He turns back to Jo and motions over his shoulder with his head in the direction they were originally traveling. "Nice shooting. Still wanna eat?" He bends down and picks up his Jacket and puts it back on, while awaiting the response.

From the end of the street more demons emerge, this time there's only four of them, but one of them is much larger bearing three heads, and its claws and fangs are wreathed with unholy flames.

It looked as if it massed over 200 kilos.

It looked at the group and belched a fireball at them, missing only slightly and melting the concrete to their left.

"Hey!" a startled Jo, exclaimed, skipping back in ungainly fashion to avoid getting singed by the roiling sphere of flame. "What's the-?! ...Oh. OH!" Her initial enthusiasm vanished completely when she caught a glimpse of the massive, hellish creature, and instinct took over. The panicked quaver in her voice was audible as she grabbed hold of Shin's arm with her free hand and gave it a brief pull, shouting, "Don't you guys have leash laws here?! C'mon!" Turning, she quickly began to run for all she was worth, her long legs flying as she desperately tried to escape whatever the heck that thing was.

Kazuo's anger cooled as he watched the demon dogs fall apart before his eyes, but he still kicked at the crumbling ashes just to be spiteful. Now that it was all over, Kazuo realized just how alive he suddenly felt. It was a strange way to feel after watching three friends get ripped to shreds by monstrous creatures, and then having to fight those creatures to the death, but it was how he felt nonetheless.

He chalked it up to adrenaline and forgot about it. He had better things to worry about. Like what in the hell just happened?!

Fucking monsters just attacked him right out on a public street! That shit was insane, and he could barely believe he'd survived it without a scratch! Sugoii, neh?!

Kazuo went to flick the blood off his blades, but realized there wasn't any. It was like the blood had been absorbed by the metal itself. Shrugging, Kazuo tucked the weapons back under his jacket, which really didn't seem large or baggy enough to conceal two swords the size and shape of Kazuo's, but the weapons disappeared easily under the cloth nonetheless, giving no visible evidence of their presence.

Then he turned his attention back to his surroundings to take stock of his situation and try and decide what to do next. He had a feeling that getting laid tonight was probably not on the menu anymore. Che...

As Shin and Jo fled the monsters, they realized belatedly that they just passed someone. Someone headed...the wrong way. TOWARDS the monsters. They heard her say, as if in response to Shin's question...

"A Hound of Hell," in a rather pleasant, matter of fact tone...as if relating the latest sports score or commenting on the weather.

The girl was short and of slim build, dressed in the white and red hakama of a shrine maiden. Though her back was to them so they couldn't see exactly what it was, she had some kind of a light that she was shining ahead of her, like a bright flashlight, though it seemed to be in a weird place...up by her neck maybe.

"Don't be afraid," she called back. It seemed strange, but something about the calm in her voice was reassuring. "I will keep them away from you while you find a safe place to hide."

The light brightened until she seemed outlined in a bright halo of it...a globe of daylight on this dark night.

Through the melee of gnashing teeth and foaming drool, Kaori swayed away from each attack as they came, and the beasts in turn did their very best to do the same.

As two broke from the melee she could see that one went for Kage and Jim while the second was set for assaulting Ken. Ken?! The boy could barely defend himself, yet the hound was already engaging the young man. "Kinshiro! Get back!" she screamed in her typical, if not distracted, authoritative tone.

With swift slashes Kaori called upon the Blade of Shadow's power and a blue arc sailed across the ground followed by another that veered towards the hound that was barreling down upon James and Kage. Each struck true eviscerating the hounds that posed a threat to her allies.

With he concentration split between the action far from her and the melee she was in the middle of she barely was able to dodge the leaping fangs that came towards her. She defended herself as best she could swing her blade at her opponents but coming up with nothing more than wisps of shadow-stuff and tufts of rancid fur.

She continued to fight, calm, emotionless on the outside scared as hell on the inside. There is no thought, only purpose. she continued to repeat to herself as the war in the streets raged on.

With yet a different form of magic attack speeding from Kaori's sword to dissipate the Hellhound heading towards him, Jim spun on the spot and charged/slid a lunge at one of those threatening Kaori herself which promptly dies in an explosion of light as his sword, 'Holy Touch' pierces it.

Unfortunately he was too late to realise that doing so would lower his body relative to hers and so she, once again, would be accusing him of peeping and lustful thoughts.

At the end of the strike he quickly gets to his feet turning away from Kaori to face any threat left.

Kazuo stared up and down the empty, but still menacing street, and tried to decide what to do. Despite the chaos and nightmarish quality of his evening so far, going home just didn't seem like an option for Kazuo. Problem was, neither did anything else...

Despite his best efforts, his one good eye kept falling on the corpses of his fallen friends, or rather, on the bloody pile of gristle and gore that was left of them. As fate would have it, this put him in mind - naturally enough - of death, and that put him in mind - less naturally, but hey, you've got to admit there is some connection - of the shrine he remembered seeing somewhere nearby.

Now, normally, Kazuo would scoff (openly, and loudly) at the idea of going to a shrine for much of any reason, but what the hell, right? After all the yabe-grade stuff that's already gone down tonight (and it's not even seven o'clock yet), he figured it couldn't hurt and, somehow, it was the only option that really felt right.

He had started to think about how lame it would be if any of his friends found out he'd actually taken refuge at a shrine, but then - he wasn't sure how many of his friends were still alive to care...

Kazuo made his way to the Shrine from the West, and made good time. Six hounds and a pair of bite wounds later his clothes were cut up some, he turned the corner six blocks from the shrine complex. Standing right there were a pair of hounds that were different. Both of these had burning green eyes. They split up immediately and started circling him. First one then the other launched inward at him, with huge sets of glowing green claws and the other fire-wreathed fangs.

By the time Kazuo encountered this new variety of hell hound, he was perhaps a bit overconfident. In getting to this point he'd taken out another half-dozen of the damned things, and he'd gotten to see first hand how he'd managed surviving the night he'd come into possession of his new blades; he could heal. Or maybe the word was 'regenerate', but whatever.

Point was, he'd been able to actually watch the wounds close up before his eyes ('eye', actually, but who's counting, right?)! It was freakin' incredible! He was unkillable, man!

Goddamned worms - or maybe maggots, but that was somehow grosser than worms, so worms is how Kazuo thought of them - came crawling out from the wounds in a squirming mass and reknit muscle, tendon, and skin faster than Kazuo could keep track of. Disgusting, but stinkin' awesome, too!

So by the time he found himself facing these two new hounds, with the glowing and flaming claws and fangs, he was just a tad full of himself - which, speaking honestly, was nothiing unusual for Kazuo Kanai. The fact of the matter was that he was full of himself most of the time. Tonight he was just really full of himself. But it's all relative, ya know?

And it turned out to be his undoing.

Firstly, the creatures turned out to be much faster than he'd anticipated. Before he even realized what was happening, they were lunging at him, and the huge blind spot where his right eye used to be meant that he almost didn't even see the one on that side coming for him. Ironically, it was his overcompensation for this that opened him up to the beast on his left. He grit his teeth and stifled a pained scream as it bit into his forearm, tearing his flesh straight to the bone (or at least that's what it felt like). The weapon in that hand went flying into space as his hand went numb and lost its grip on the handle.

Both of his attempts at striking the hounds failed utterly as well, and Kazuo's swollen confidence was deflating fast.

Then the slavering beasts circled round and moved in for a second pass, hoping to get yet another taste of his flesh and blood. But, as Kazuo had expected, his arm had already healed most of the damage and in another second or two even what remained would be gone. So Kazuo gripped his remaining sword in both hands and, ignoring the lingering pain, leapt back into the fray without feeling nearly the level of concern that he should have.

He dodged the first of the hounds easily, cutting a clean slice along its side as he did so. He felt a strange inrushing of vital energy, as though the lifeforce bleeding out of the hound's wound had just been siphoned into himself. He could live with that. But he wasn't so lucky with the second hound, and it tore another chunk out of Kazuo's flesh, more or less shredding his jacket and a large part of his shirt in the process. Kazuo wasn't about to sell his flesh cheap, though, and so he extracted payment of his own in the form of a deep gash in the thing's belly. Again, there was the sense of lifeforce being siphoned into him, and this time he could feel it adding to, and bolstering, his body's already impossible regenerative capabilities. By the time he and the hounds were clear of each other and he had a moment to take stock of himself his wounds were gone entirely, and he felt as healthy as he'd ever felt in his life. Fucking awesome, man!

This time Kazuo didn't wait for the hounds to attack, but rushed at them with sword raised and a scream in his throat. This accomplished precisely nothing however, because the hound on his left leapt when it should have charged (stupid dog...), hitting Kazuo square in the chest, and getting all tangled up in his arms. While Kazuo was still trying to untangle himself from the first hound (and hopefully salvage at least a few of the remaing scraps of flesh still hanging from his chest), the second leapt onto his back, its jaws tearing into the meat of his shoulder and more or less fucking his shit up royally...

Kazuo didn't black out until just after he face-planted into the pavement, which kind of sucked, as one might imagine it would.

Chikuso, what a day...

"That's enough. Do not kill him. There will be a use for him I should think. A man with red hair like flames emerged from the shadows and retrieved the fallen warrior's weapons.

"Here, you'll need these in the days to come. "Grow strong little Knight. You have fared better than most humans do. But next time I'll let them finish, make no mistake. Truth be told I like watching you fight. So barbaric, so inhuman... Almost like you were meant to be one of us."

In his unconscious state, only Kazuo's subconscious heard the words, tormenting him with them in his dreams. The Man walks back into the shadows chuckling, laughing at what a cruel pattern fate was unfolding.

Shin stopped, turned and looked at the young lady who went the wrong way. "We're not hiding, we're running. And so are you." Shin rushed back to where the young lady was but slammed into an invisible wall about half-way back. "Ow! Hey, you. Are you insane? You wanna be lunch?" He shrugs, and runs off after Jo, trying to get away from the cerberus.

"I am Keiko Mimura," the girl replied. "I'm here to bring the dawn."

Vaguely Shin recalled some girl named Mimura around school. She seemed like one of the loners, always eating lunch off at an empty table... Or maybe it was just no one wanted to sit with her.

Now she held her hand up. Something in it was glowing too brightly to look at.

"Amateratsu, open your eye and see! Anger of the noonday sun!"

There was a blinding flash! When vision returned, both Shin and Jo could see a ball of light hovering over Keiko's head, maybe seven or eight meters up. It cast an incredible golden radiance over the ground around her, lighting up a circle twenty meters from side to side, with Keiko directly in the middle.

Where the light touched the monstrous dogs, their flesh sizzled and shriveled as some vital animating essence was burned away!

(Affects 10m radius, centered on Keiko, causes 3 Soul Drain, and Flash 3. Only affects beings of Shadow. Duration of 5 rounds.)

The Cerberus's flesh burned, and it launched another fireball from one head as it loped forward. It missed due to the Eye's effect, but the ball of flame was great enough to weaken the field even from a miss. The flames licked around them, but the barrier came back up protecting them. Then the Cerebrus was on them, preparing start lashing out with it's fangs and claws.

He was in an alley. Hadn't he been here before?

What was that sound?

Kazuo cautiously walked deeper into the shadows, feeling a growing sense of dread in his stomach, along with a growing certainty that he should know where he was - and that he wasn't going to like what he found at the end of this alley.

He wanted to turn around and go the other way, but there was something important waiting for him down here, wasn't there? Yes! That's right! Reiko had said she would be waiting for him here. Beautiful, sexy, exotic Reiko. Kazuo suddenly couldn't wait. Why in the hell had he been afraid of this alley a second ago? The girl of his dreams was waiting for him down there!

What was that sound?

Reiko? Is that you? ...Who's there?

Shapes came into view, and Kazuo immediately wished they hadn't. So much blood!

What the... hell... was that thing? That noise again - what was it...?

Reiko? Reiko?! You fucking bastard! What have you done to her?

What have I done?

The inhuman creature, hulking, oily, tentacled, monstrous, looked Kazuo over with gleaming eyes and a sickening grin. Kazuo felt ill. It spoke a second time.

What have I done? Nothing. I am not the one responsible for this beautiful little corpse, little human. You are!

What? What the hell are you talking about?

Kazuo felt a moist sensation and looked down. His shirt, his arms, and especially his hands, were coated in blood. His hands gleamed redly with it.

No! This isn't right! It wasn't me. I didn't do this!

Kazuo looked pleadingly at Reiko, but her lifeless eyes only stared blankly at nothing. He looked to the bakemono, but its eyes were filled with a cruel mirth, and mocking laughter came from its mouth. This wasn't the way it had happened, Kazuo was sure of it.

No! You were the one that did this! You killed her, and I tried to stop you!

Kazuo fought back tears of anger, frustration, and guilt as he looked down at his blood-soaked hands. This wasn't right, was it?

I tried to stop you. But you were too strong - you almost killed me. There was nothing I could do. Nothing I could do...

Oh yes, that's right, you didn't quite die last time, did you?

The bakemono's eyes lit up with an evil gleam. It dropped Reiko's body and took a step towards Kazuo.

I think we can fix that mistake this time, don't you?

It took another step forward. Kazuo screamed.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Kazuo jerked upright from where he lay, covered in sweat and shaking. It was just a dream. Just a dream...

He struggled to his feet and tried to figure out where he was. His jacket was gone, and his shirt was just about torn to ribbons, but otherwise it looked like he'd recovered fully from his fight with the two hell hounds. Which meant that he'd survived that fight, but how?

It was then that he remembered losing one of his weapons and, alarmed, realized that he didn't know where either of them were. But a quick glance to one side, and he saw them lying there on the ground, right next to where he'd been laying himself. Reaching down to pick them up, Kazuo realized that they were actually... crackling with energy. He hesitated for a moment, but then he shrugged mentally and grabbed ahold of them.

Nothing happened. There was a kind of humming that he could feel coming from the blades through his hands, but no electric shock or burning. So that was good.

Stuffing the blades in his belt, Kazuo turned his attention back to his surroundings. It didn't take him long to realize that he was inside the shrine that he'd been heading for. Now he just had to figure out how the hell he'd gotten there, and how much time had passed...

There was a long silence and faint sizzle in the air as Onimaru scorched away the impurities on its unblemished surface. Faint wisps of shadow-smoke wafted up off the ancient blade cleaning away blood and left over viscera.

Although not bathed in gore, Kaori's uniform was spattered here and there with the demon's blood. Her breath was quickened and, despite her athletic appearance, seemed winded.

She was simply afraid. Unlike some of the gathered, who seemed to be veteran combatants that laughed in the face of danger, Kaori had never harmed another creature or person with her blade, ever. She could easily cast aside guilt, the beasts were obviously not friendly, but that still didn't account for the fact that they weredemons, oni, creatures from the Realm of Shadows!

Until a few moments ago Kaori's life made sense and now it was just a jumble of one impossibility piled atop another. People making guns appear, floating fairies from Who-Knows-Where, summoning ice storms and not to mention her own new found power lying dormant within her ancestral blade.

She slid her sword into its scabbard (which she knew she dropped with her school books, where did it come from?) and quickly composed herself, masking her feelings and lack of understanding as she did.

"Is everyone alright," looking over The Gathered she mentally made a head count and eyeballed for any possible injuries. "We're close to the Aoyama Dojo. I invite you all to come with me, hopefully it will be safe, and we'll sort the how's and why's of this days events there. On the streets we are too exposed."

Lindh spears Kaori with her steady apprasing gaze, then looks to the others. "You all fought well for young people. Only a minor injury, that's good it shows alot of promise."

"The dojo will not be safe especially for you all. Only a Holy place will be safe for this large of a group. She turns and bows to Ken. "With your permission Master, I will find us someplace safe to go." She waits patienly, her armor gleaming in the moonlight her eyes having returned to their light silver-grey color.

"Lindh, take flight and make sure we don't run across anymore of those hounds ... or worse. Lead us to the closest Shrine."

"Wait! If you see other people in trouble, aid them - please."

Ken handed his sword over to Jim.

"Thank you," he says and bows.

To Kaori,

"Kaori-sama, Lindh has more experience in this kind of thing. We should heed her wisdom."

He then quickly goes over to his school things to gather them up for the hopefully quick trip to the shrine. He hopes the others are too occupied with their own worries to notice him shaking uncontrolably. He hurries to keep up with Kaori. Passing Skye he quickly says,

"What you did was phenomenable. You probably saved us."

"As you wish Master." Lindh's wings extend out as opposed to being laid down and she rises into the air, bow in hand. She looks around and quickly sees and senses Keiko, and the others being chased by a Cerberus. "Damn. She needs help."

She continues looking and realizes a Quartet of Cerberus and a pack of smaller hounds were quickly coming up behind Ken and the others. "Dammit." She drew up the bow. "I have no choice."

Focusing her spiritual power into her bow she drew it back and loosed the arrow into the air. about 400m away from the party hundreds of arrows fell to earth killing the lesser hounds and hurting all four Cerberus trying to sneak up on the party."

"No choice." She drew back again, an arrow of light forming between her hand and the bow. Master, all of you, get moving now. there's at least 5 Cerberus on the prowl here, they are far beyond you. I will do what I can. Now Go!"

She looked back to the Keiko and nodded, acknowledging Ken's command to help others. "Ultimate Bullseye!" She loosed the shaft of light which streaked toward the Cerberus Keiko and the others were about to engage, coring straight through its heart and causing it to disintegrate. She floated there, trying to remain aloft. Using two of her big techniques was draining, but it bought everyone time. She hoped they used it wisely.

Kage looked at the group, embarrassed that the bite had stunned him so. Luckily, there were far flashier things going on, and so he mutter quietly, "Dojo-- er, shrine. Right. The nearest shrine would be..." Kage spun in place, trying to think of which shrine would be easiest to get to.

"The Shrine is farther away and not on the same path as your family dojo. Still here can't be more than five blocks distant. Kaori, come with us that far and then we can get help to come with you to your dojo. There are creatures coming up behind us. We should seek the safest point of shelter. You will do your family no service if we die trying to get there. Come on. A pointless death only serves the Darkness," Ken pleads.

"We need to make for the shrine."
