Big Eyes, Small Mouth (BESM): Nexus Earth - Chapter 4: Session 1- What comes after....

The two days following the Battle at Jindai were hectic beyond belief. For the civilians there was so much to take in, for the allied personnel, so much to consider now.

For Saito and Ibis, the course of action was clear. In coordinated sorties, the two of them scoured all of the demons on Shikoku and Kyushu. They also caused quite a stir, when much to the suprise of everyone, they called in a report of a lone member of CRT-9, known only as "Ibuki" having survied protecting a group of 7 families, some thirty souls, with little more than his wits and field kit.

Lunamaria deployed two full squandrons of twenty mecha along with herself to serve as Escort for the Archangel and to help with the sanitizing of Hokkaido and Honshu. The entirety of CRT-13 was brought down to set up a base camp on the site of Satoshi Heavy industries Home office.

Kai, Raisho, and all the others were tended in secrecy, and on the third day, A full frontal assault was waged against The Bazaroth gate. Casualties were light, mainly due to the overwhelming presence of the Archangel, and the constant sorties of Saito, Ibis and Lunamaria and her team. Only two mecha and a handful of ground forces were lost in the battle, which suprised everyone.

Lily, Georgi, Valerie, Growler, Raisho and Amane fought doggedly with the enemy ground forces, each of them slaying dozens of foes. It was like the ancient legends of how the Kage kept the demons at bay all over again, and that boosted morale of the Satoshi officer corps considerably. They were doing what they were meant to do, what all who can trace their heritage back wished to do. They fought the good fight, and won.

Kai stood at the center of what had once been the stronghold of all Kage, and closed the gate of Bazaroth in such a way that only a skeleton key could possibly reopen it. He dropped to the ground, having expended almost all of his energy between fighting and locking the gate. It was almost comical in that Masane and Lily seemed to race to his side to help him up, but in the end, Kai smiled at both of them, and they each bore him up, one of his arms around each of their necks.

The next morning everyone was assembled in the Archangel's ready room.

Captain Ramius started things off. "Excellent job to you all, our homeland is free and the rebuilding can begin."

Captain Johnson nodded. "indeed, you all performed far beyond any expectations, and Despite your rather unorthodox entrance Lieutenant Murazaki, I must say it was amazing to watch you and Lieutenant Douglas fight. With some work, you two will be up there on Captain Nagare's level in no time. The name sent a visible chill through Ibis as she looked to Saito. "Captain Nagare, as in Ryoma Nagare, He's alive?"

Raisho took the reigns. "Of course he is, but that is neither here nor there. What's of concern now is those who are still wounded and where we go from here." His mention of the still wounded referred to only one person, the Captain Amane Kaunac, who had shielded Georgi from Takashi's first stage Bankai attack.

"Amane is in critical condition, and even her unique physiology is barely keeping her alive. At best we are keeping her sleeping peacefully, but her wounds simply will not mend."

He sighs. "Beyond the condition of Captain Kaunac, we have at least five hundred and fifty civilian survivors, with nothing to do. I'm thinking of offering them temporary jobs with my CRT to help start the rebuilding process. It won't be mandatory, but the sooner we can actually move the Archangel the better I'll feel. We may have won Supremacy, but that's only good for Satoshi forces. Anyone else can still attack us and the Archangel makes one huge target."

Lunamaria nods. "I sent one of my Squadrons up into geosynchronous orbit to serve as fast response to ICBM's, but to be honest, with Captain Kaunac out of action, I know I need to return to Luna base. If it were to be attacked right now..." She trailed off and Captain Johnson smiled.

"Lucky for us, John thought to do something smart before he left. He activated the old Reagan system for Luna base. If any hostile attempts to attack the base from space they'll be blasted to component atoms."

Raisho let out a low whistle. "The Reagan system can knock even the Macross from the sky...."

Johnson broke in. "But it is useless against ground attacks. I'm going to head back with half of my CRT and Lunamaria to continue our Vigilance of protecting the base. Takashi and Hizashi can still attack there. and Ruri can't possibly defeat either of them in a one on one battle." The image of little quiet Ruri trying to fight a monster like Takashi or Hizashi would have been comical if not for how quickly it could become true.

"We can't let that happen."

It was almost as though the others weren't there, but then something odd happened. Raisho turned to Kai. He had learned of Kai's lineage and nodded once before bowing his face to the floor in reverence. He knew of the allegiance sworn to Lily, but it was clear he considered Kai as the one who he would take orders from, not her. "Kai, what do you think?"

Kai looked around the table. Everyone seemed to wait on his answer, especially those clad in the standard uniforms and robes of Satoshi. "Consolidating or homeland is iportant, but we have to protect Luna base. We have to build everything from the ground up here, and most of our materials are coming from Luna."

He smiles. "Lily and the CRT's who've followed her thus far paid a high price for the base and to get us this far." He looks at Valerie, Saito, Georgi, Lily and Growler. "What do each of you think? Where do we go from here in your eyes, what should we do next How can we help everyone?"

Noticing the shift in power structure, Lily feels a pang of relief...but also a curious little twist of possessiveness. The pressure on her had eased, but at the same time...it was harder than she expected to surrender the authority she'd worked so hard for, and given up so much for.

"I think we need to evacuate the civilians to our territory on Earth," she opines. "It's safer here now that the gate's closed and..." Lily pauses, still not sure what to CALL the opposing faction. Were they still Satoshi Heavy Industries? Or was that the people here with her now? "...and our other enemies are bound by honor not to attack. They can start reconstruction here, and it'll ease life support requirements on the lunar base."

"Most of our military staff should remain at the moon though. It's still vulnerable to attack, and since it's the only source of industry we have right now, we can't afford to lose it. We can keep a small garrison on Earth to provide security and law enforcement, but most of it needs to be at luna."

She takes a deep breath. "We also need to start looking at long-term problems now, before they become real threats. Like food. We're doing fine with our small population for now, but once they start rebuilding and...well, growing...we're going to run out of food fast. These islands just don't have much farmland or fresh water. And we need to work out who and what can still hurt us."

She glances at Saito and his friend. "Like Circinus, for example. We haven't seen them since they attacked the civilian population of Earth," she can't help but inject some venom into that...just thinking about it makes her blood cold... "but they're still out there and we need to know what they're up to."

"And if there's any 'gaps' in this pledge of honor that keeps the other Captains off of us, we need to know. They can't attack us directly, but can they find other ways to hurt us? Maybe surrounding our territory with polluting industries, or using spies against us? Hiring mercenaries that can then attack us?"

"So yeah. Transfer of civilian population to Earth, and threat identification should be our immediate priorities. Establish and develop an infrastructure, both civilian and military."

It was a little weird to see a girl of 17 talking like that. Easy to forget she was actually nearly 200 Earth years old.

"Takashi and those with him can make no overt moves against us here on Japan. Hizashi will at least see to that much. You can bank on Takashi encircling us, but only to fight. He's the sort to only think about defeating an opponent on the field of battle when he's angry, and i assure that's what he is most right now."

As for the civilians, they've been on board the Archangel since being recovered, so transferring them back groundside won't be a hard thing. Housing can be easily arranged, but food and water may take more inventive means. The Fabricators on Luna can build a desalinization plan easy enough, but we have to get it here. As for food, you'd be amazed at that. Alot of SHI's production was for enhancing the quality of life of the common citizen. Alot of that was icreased medical technology, and food production techniques. Granted many won't be viable here in Japan, but We can find the means to make it work. If we truly had to, we have the capability to produce near infinte MRE's. they taste like styrofoam, but they will fulfill all nutritional requrements." Raisho's words were those of a thoughtful commander.

,,

Captain Johnson spoke next. "We redeploy the Archangel into low orbit, station at least two squads of CRT-13 Spartans on her to rebel any boarding attempts, leave half the CRT at Luna with me, and the rest we seend planetside under John. That will give you a powerful ground and city presence, and an extremely effective police force. The Operation force at Luna base can easily repel all but Takashi and Hizashi, and even still be able to spare teams for missions and handle security."

He looks at Lily. "Yes He could hire mercenaries, starve us, and such attacks, but spies are forbidden, as is a clash between all who bear The crest of either Satoshi faction in or around Japan. However there is one consideration of Supremacy. If the territory in question is the homeland of the vanquished, he may petition to be allowed entry to the area unarmed. If attacked they may defend themselves. We do not have to accept, but it is extrememly bad form to refuse. It is seen as being cowardly, and can call into question our honor. If our honor becomes to suspect, then They call for a trial to refuse Supremacy, basically repudiating trial of Supremacy if they win. However, the combatants must be of similar power levels. We could not meet their call to trial using a Lieutenant with a Captain, nor could they challenge a Lieutenant with a Captain, though handicaps can be placed on the more powerful opponent if it is the only way. The battle must be honorable and fair." The details for Supremacy were somewhat crucial.

Raisho nods. "The only reason I won was Hizashi. He stripped Takashi of most of his energy stores to equalize him to the level at which I could fight. I can utilize my reserves more efficently and thus I was victorious."

Captain Ramius turns her gaze to Saito and Ibis. "The Princess brings up an excellent point Lieutenant Murazaki. You've been with the Federation, what do you believe they will do? We all saw Zanger Zonbolt use his personal mechan in a Duel with that Hiroga warrior, and We know it was he who called down the barrage of cannonfire that opened the gate and laid waste to the countryside. I would wager it was his fleet that rained death on the rest of Asia as well. What do you think his next move is?"

Ibis looked at Captain Ramius with a gaze that seemed to smolder. "Major Zonbolt only called down the bombardment because they violated the rules of the duel. Yes it was his small fleet that was engaged there, and most of it was destroyed by the blasts from this ship and The Nadesico and the Sacred Alus."

There was a special reverence in the way she said the last name. Kai, who had been looking at Lily after she'd been addressed as Princess snapped to Ibis. "The Alus?"

Captain Ramius shook her head. "We don't have a ship by that name."

"Ibis surged on. You call her the Macross, but her name is the Alus. She was the Flagship of the Federation Navy until her disappearance a year ago. She vanished with her full compliment of personnel, some five thousand souls, The only ship to boast that many personnel in our fleet. It was a truly sad day for us all. Now to find her in the hands of those we were told to fight, To face her starflame canons, that is why the Fleets thought to run. That ship is beyond the scope of any weapons platform concieved."

Captain Ramius looked amazed. Before she could truly think, she spoke. "The Macross was nothing but a wreck when we found her back in the nineteen fifties. All the experts agree that she's been on planet for at least ten thousand years, so we must be talking about a different ship. The Macross and the Alus cannot be the same ship."

"No. It had an expirimental non-deuterra reactor called a Reflex Furnace. I don't know all the details but it does provide a much safer means of rapid transit than Deuterra reactions. There are at least twelve recorded instances of it being used successfully. It isn't as fast to my knowledge, but having seen Your Macross and Nadesico chase the Kurogane and Shirogane, Itchased them using the Reflex Furnace's superluminal capability. You may call her the Macross, but to Circinus she is the Alus, a prize almost as valuable as Planet Earth itself."

Ibis looks to Saito and nods. "The entire Home Defense Fleet is enroute, Along with all four Arkships. The exact numbers are in excess of ten thousand ships and over half a million autonomous mecha. It's a medium sized fleet, one you saw elements of already. They're lead by the Hagane, On which at least Four of our best Ace Pilots serve. Captain Aya Kobayashi, Lieutenant's Ryusei Date and Raidese Braunstein, their mecha combine to form the virtually invincible SRX. The Fourth Ace is Lieutenant Irmgult Kazahara piloting the three hundred fifty ton Grungust. It's one of the most massive robots constructed. It has enough armor to shrug off most capital ship attacks and can transform. The Daizengar that Sanger pilots and The Aussenseiter that Elzam uses are modified versions of the Grungust, though they are much lighter and faster."

She shakes her head. "They are coming to colonize Earth, and prepare it to repel the Invaders. That is the only reason to mobilize the fleet."

"Repel the invaders? They ARE the invaders!"

Feeling sick at her stomach, Lily leans over towards the nearest Captain and says, "Do we have a long range communication device? Something faster than radio. I need to see if I can contact Dalaraan. A fleet that size demands a response."

"No. the Invaders are the things you all fought at Luna base, the things Major Sanger and Elzam fought on Ganymede just before ordering us here. They're like a plague that stretches across the universe, destroying all sentient life. The Getter Reactors in this system have called them here, now they won't stop."

Captain Ramius nods. "We have a Hyperpulse generator onboard all three battleships. We can send it and use the Macross and the Nadesico to bounce the signal further out, but it will take at least several hours to get the signal to and from your homeworld. "

Lily shakes her head and gives Saito a smile.

"It's all right, Saito. I'm just glad you're not hurt. And on our side. You can just call me Lily too, if you want."

She looks at Ibis again.

"So what do we know about these 'getter aliens'?"

"If they're dead caracsses aren't totally destroyed, another live one can use it to heal itself, or absorb it to urther its own evolution. I've only heard of a few beyond thirteenth stage. It seems that they actually turn on each other, and the more powerful can be attacked by the lesser. I have never fought them in real combat, so I do not know much more."

"Beyond that we still have three terran months before they arrive. They won't risk using SDeuterra drives on the Arkships because of the potential for accidents among the people onboard." Ibis's words send to almost make it seem like Deuterra had some hidden cost, one all who use it would pay.

"I have seen them consume their dead. It is an effective means of healing and strengthening." Georgi had until this point remained silent. He was not in a position to comment on the fleets of either Circinius, Satoshi or Dalaraan. That was the purview of the respective commands. He could however lend his experience fighting the Invaders. "Is there any way to neutralize their ability to absorb one another?"

Seeing Saito alive was a morale booster for Georgi. It meant that only Yua needed to be mourned and honored for her sacrafice. When there was some free time, Georgi would have to speak with Saito about the little 'adventure' he had when he supposedly died. It was not very often that a fallen soldier returned from the land of the honored dead.

Amane remained in stasis, and to his agonizing, it prevented him from making physical contact with her. He wanted her to know that he was there. He wanted to feel the warmth of her skin one last time. His heart ached at the though of her dying.

Valerie looked utterly lost, completely beffudled by what everyone was talking about.

"Huh...I hate sounding ignorant, but...what are you guys talking about?" Valerie was currently wearing an eye patch on her left eye, bandages covering the left side of her head, and a temporarity sling and bandages on her right arm.

"What are this Invaders? What happened with the Circinus fleet? What are the Arkships? and even more, what happened in this world that the demons invaded? Where are we?" Valerie looked at everyone with the innocent face of somebody who is blissfully ignorant of the tense situation at hand.

The young man sitting in the corner speaks up, "Ummmm. Hi. I have a couple of points to make, then i'll shut up and let you guys decide what to do. I came to this world seeking help. I helped you guys and gals out with the demon-things. I was promised that you would help me in return. It need not be immediate, but I want you to honor that promise. The second thing is that there is a flower on my world with what are said to be extraordinary healing powers. It is said that it could bring back those who are dead. If you wish, I will lead an expedition to retrieve this flower for your fallen comrade." He sighs, "Oh, By the way, my name is Eado. You can all call me Growler."

Kai seems to consider everything and almost lets Raisho or someone else go into an explanation for Valerie, but he smiles. "We're back in our own world Valerie, or at least my homeworld. I know you aren't from it, but I want you to consider it home. The demons invaded when the Federation destroyed the seal over the Bazaroth gate. After we came back and fought Hizashi, Takashi and the others Saito and Ibis and Lunamaria and her team spent the next few days destroying most of the Demons here in Japan and then I resealed the gate so that only someone like me can reopen it."

He shrugs "As to the Arkships and Circinus Fleet, Lieutenant ibis seems to have the best grasp of that situation."

At Growler's request and statement he sits straight up and smiles widely. "Now that is what I want to hear. We can talk all we want about the future, and planning is good. We need to plan for the future, but we do have immediate concerns. Right now we have several lives counting on us, and a chance to rebuild our home in peace. While I only just got back to this world, If there's a chance I can save lives and give my friends and schoolmates a chance at normal lives again, then I'll do what's needed."

He nods to Growler. "You come from Ikaris if I'm not mistaken. You say you were promised aid in your world in return for aid here, I'll make good that promise. Help us retrieve these plants with healing properties, and I'll stay in your world until its safe."

His statement blankets the room in silence. Then Masane nods. "Where my Master goes, so do I."

Raisho shakes his head. "Impossible. We just got you back from another timeline Kai, As the highest ranking officer I will not allow you to place yourself in that level of danger again. I'm sorry but you stay here. I promised aid, and I will deliver it."

The door opens and another voice calls out. "But you are not the highest ranking officer Raisho. I belive The Captain of CRT-3 outranks all but the Captains of CRT's 1 and 2." Akina Nanamura walks into the ready room. She is clad in the formal robe of CRT-3, With the patch and golden insignia worn only by the Captain of that Team. Her hair is long and white again, and her voice has the same tone as Atshushi's. "Raisho and his entire team are best suited to rebuilding, and the team I assembled has shown itself to be remarkably apt at saving the world. If there is to be a venture to another world I believe they are the ones best suited for it."

Kai looks to Akina in shock. His only word is one that seems to capitalize on everyone's thoughts. "Atsushi?"

Valerie sat in silence while the world came to a standstill inside of her. Around her people talked, and discussed, inside of her something very deep inside of her died with the funeral pyre that was not Tokyo.

The voices around her turned into white noise, and Valerie shot like a bullet out of her seat and through the present people barreling past Captain Nanamura, taking a harsh turn right outside the door and losing herself into the broken corridors of the building.

Running from everything, from the situation, from her companions and from the way she was feeling.

Pushing past all the doors she could find until she found light and fresher air, she jumped into the air and lost herself in the roof of the old Kyudo practice range in the back of the school.

Sitting on the corner by herself, Valerie held her knees to her chest and buried her face on them, sobbing for the loss of all the people she had known in what had previously been her life in this world.

"Captain Raisho is right, Kai...you don't have to personally..."

She breaks off as Akina enters and Valerie departs. For the moment she seems torn between staying and seeing what's going on, and going in pursuit of Valerie...

Kai rose to follow after Valerie, but Akina stopped him. "Sit down Kai. Let her be. She just basically lost her world again. While you may be able to cope with that, she is having some difficulty. Let her be alone for now, and let us finish this discussion. Afterwards I will go and tend to our wayward Exile."

She nods to the others. "Some of you know that the being known as Atsushi Hayami has actually lived several times. His is a unique form of reincarnation that doesn't always bring him back as he was before. The changes can be in age, sex and actual abilities. Much of it hinges on whether or not someone else is dying at the same time. Such was the Case with Me. I was dying from my wounds suffered when my home collapsed. I met him in the realm between life and Death and he asked if I wanted it to end like this. I didn't see how I could change things, but he promised he could. There are still things for me to do, and so I accepted. To my knowledge His Soul and Mine have fused and we are now one being. I know what he knew and vice-versa. His own abilities augmented those of my bloodline, the effects of which you've already seen."

She smiles thinly. "I am Atsushi and I am not Atsushi. If you would, simply call me Akina."

"Raisho shakes his head. "That isn't proof enough for me to accept you."

Akina sighs. "You're always like this." She draws the sword that seemed to materialize at her side from nothing. The blade seemed to glow even in it's non-released state. It looked as though fire was dancing along it's edge and heat shimmered behind it. All the other Zanpaktou in the room pulsed as the swword did, each alerting their master that this was the real deal. "The Sword of Gabriel."

"Only Atsushi could wield that sword without being lit aflame." Captain Johnson recognized his former pupil's sword well. He'd been onhand to witness its initial drawing.

"Proof enough for me Raisho. We both know only Atsushi, or someone with his express permission could draw and wield that blade. This Young woman is either as she says, or has the latter, and thus his authority. Let us not waste more time."

"Yes, very well." Raisho is obviously somewhat shaken, but Murrue lays a hand on his shoulder. "It is okay Raisho, you've only done what you felt you needed to."

Kai looks to Lily to address her comment. "Yes, Lily I feel I do. I'm the only one who can transport Growler home, and the only one who can bring any who go with him back."

The room goes silent for a moment as everyone seems to wait to see what will happen next.

Saito stood up and spoke to Akina.

"Excellency, please allow me to go and speak with Miss Valarie. It would be wise to have all of our forces in top condition before we leave and I believe that I can help her though these troublesome times."

"Lily you're too important to the efforts here." He is moderately suprised when Saito seems to immediately accept Akina as Atsushi.

Akina shakes her head. "No Lieutenant, I will handle her. Valerie's problems run far deeper than you can imagine. However.." Her eyes betray the Mischief that Atsushi was famous for. "...There are about five hundred students who still think their Student Council is gone and that everything they knew has been destroyed. I need you to go down and allay their fears. Take Lieutenant Douglass with you and be sure to get the right Uniform. I will not force you to wear my Colors, but you are still my Lieutenant are you not? Go down and round up the faculty there and have them go to the old auditorium, there we'll explain things to them."

She looks at Kai. "As Vice President, it will fall to you to take over the Student Council. Considering our Treasurer and Secretary are dead or MIA, you will need to name people to those positions. Pick who you wish, but understand they will be let in on the full details of the situation."

"Oh, -I'm- too important?" Lily replies. "Kai, do you even know what you ARE? If you're not too important then I'm certainly not."

She looks at Akina and asks, "Is this really the time for student government? There's no more -school-."

"I'm what's called a Skeleton Key, which means I can open any doorway to anywhere, including those between dimensions. But I am the only one we have, and the only one with that ability so I do have to go so our people aren't stranded."

Akina interrupts next. "Lily, these students have lived like moles for a week since the attack began. Only a handful know what happened, or even had a vague idea until they were evacuated. Their whole world is truly gone now, and I don't know about you, but that sort of loss can destroy a human's will to live and endure. Giving them some sign that not everything is gone, that there is still hope....

She smiles. "Give them hope, give them a choice on whether to fall apart or to stand strong and endure and I guarantee they will endure. Humanity has endured worse, it will endure this. That's why Student government is important. They will look to the leaders they elected. Considering so many are still around, and at least half our officers are here, then yes we can function."

"Besides, about three quarters of the school is standing. Only the gym and courtyard wall around it were obliterate. That can easily enough become an outdoor field. Raisho and the others have already restored power and water to it. There are enough teachers to continue teaching the students. Think of it as another way to occupy their minds, or would you prefer them being prisoners in their home nation, and that they're among the only survivors?"

The way kai seemed to know who and what he was was odd to everyone, save Akina, who knew of the arrangements made while he slept, and of the memory dump prior to that."

Lily lifts an eyebrow at Kai's recitation. He'd adjusted awfully fast.

She looks at Akina and bows apologetically.

"You're right, Akina...it was thoughtless of me to say that. I am sorry."

"That said, I'm not letting you out of my sight again, Kai Morisato. You have a bad habit of disappearing. The people here know what they're doing and can get along without me for a little while. Besides, you might need help."

Kai nods, knowing he doesn't really have a leg to stand on. "If no one objects then I say we all go and meet with our respective units. We have a mission to plan and a nation to rebuild. I need to go and grab some fresh air." Kai doesn't wait for anyone and quickly leaves the room, heading up to the rooftop, with Masane quickly following behind him.

Akina nods to the other. "Lieutenant Murazaki you have your orders... I'll meet you there once I have seen to Valerie and let my subordinates know I'm back."

Her gaze spears Growler. "I need maps of Ikaris, and of where the flowers might be. It's been over a century since I was last there, I'm sure much has changed."

Her gaze drifts to Georgi. "Coach, I'm going to need you to help Saito with the faculty. They may not trust a student, even a council member. As a member of the Faculty they will take your word more seriously. Try to but Amane from your mind, she's fine for now. We will help her and everyone else who needs it, I promise."

"Now if you'll excuse me." Akina turns and leaves, going off in pursuit of Valerie.

Raisho nods and begins issuing orders to his subordinates to carry out the plans to start rebuilding. Murrue gets up and returns to her bridge leaving the others to do as they wish.
