Aberrant: Stargate Universe - Andrew Fischer

Andrew Fischer moved through the hallways of the NID facility. It was a drab boring building. It had once been an old VA psychiatric hospital that was closed down in the 70s due to budget cuts under the Carter administration. Luckily it was still owned by the government, but had been shifted off the books by someone years ago before the NID began it's current mission. the building might be drab, but Andrew was anything but bored. He'd been recruited by the NID from the CIA to work on alien tech. It was a dream job and Andrew did everything he could to get his hands on everything that came through and look it over. After the months he'd been with the agency he'd started to get a feel for the different devices, but more importantly he had a feel for the agency itself. Enough to know that they compartmentalized everything. "Need to know" was a religious doctrine around here, and the greatest sin was breaking trust.

Despite all their precautions Andrew knew something big was going on. There were more guards and personnel around the building than he'd ever seen and he'd over heard to guards talking about the 'artifact' in hushed tones. That was all he needed to hear. He HAD to know what was going on now. Anything that could cause such a stir in the secret facility was something he really wanted to get his hands on. The little things they brought back and let him work on just wet his apatite for more. He knew if he was to have any chance of examining the new toy, he'd have to be very careful and move slowly.

He spent days casually observing movement of the guards in the building. All the activity seem to center around the third floor and when he tried to exit the elevator one day 'on accident', two guards leveled their guns and asked where he thought he was going. "Uh, sorry, must have hit three by accident, was going up to four for some supplies." he casually backed into the elevator and hit 4. That was out, so much for the easy way.

Two more days and he had discovered an emergency stairway that wasn't guarded, but it was locked. Of course, a locked door was no challenge for an engineer that worked for a secret government agency and had access to one particular nifty alien device. It could unlock nearly anything. More importantly he'd discovered the name of the lead scientist on the new project, the two things together were all it would take, the rest was just bluff.

That afternoon he checked the lock pick device out of the vault for further research and pretended to work late. That wasn't unusual, the people here kept strange hours. After the sun set and most of the day crew had gone home he quietly made his way to the emergency stairs and made his way up to 3. The little grey palm sized alien device worked like a charm and the door opened quietly. Looking up and down the hall he didn't see any guards. He moved casually around to the building to the main hallway. Here there were guards at regular intervals flanking doors. Andrew moved like he belonged there and it helped that he hadn't come from the elevator. If he was already here he must belong, right? As he walked down the hall past the guarded doors he realized these were patient rooms and there must be prisoners, so that wouldn't be it.

As he got to the middle of the building he still hadn't found what he was looking for, but one of the elevator guards step out in front of him and squinted at his name tag. "State your business Mr Fischer."

Andrew was expecting this, although he had hoped to avoid it. "Eugene Lawrence requested I bring this to the lab," he said offering up the little grey alien device. He finished with, "He said something about trying to see how the harmonic fields would react when activated." He kept his expression as causal and unconcerned as possible, almost bored.

Finally the guard nodded and jerked his thumb down the hallway in the direction he was already going. Andrew smiled but held in his sigh of relief. A little further down he saw it. A doorway with a metal bar on the outside as if to prevent anyone from getting out. This one was unguarded and had a touch pad lock on the wall next to the door. He held up his little alien lock pick and after a second the keypad beeped. He removed the metal bar and put it on the floor and slid inside the room quietly. The lights were off except for one above a large stone object. His heart was already pounding from getting past the guards, but now it really started beating fast. Those symbols were in Ancient. This thing must be a really big deal. As he approached, he was surprised when several symbols lit up. He glanced down at the small device. He was pretty sure it was Goa'uld tech and was puzzled why it would have activated an Ancient device.

As he looked it over he noticed one symbol in particular that called to him. The more he stared at it the more convinced he became that it was the right symbol. Without thought he reached out and touched the thing. His mind erupted in light and pain that seemed to go on and on. Mercifully he slipped into unconsciousness after a few seconds.

When he woke he was in a padded room lying on a bed. A man in a suit stood just inside the door and shook his head sadly. "Mr. Fischer, I must say we are quite disappointed in you. I am afraid we would like you to remain in this room for the time being until a review can be performed. You have given the agency excellent service until now. I'm sure that will be weighed in your favor, but needless to say your actions are grounds for immediate dismissal. Your supervisor has spoken on your behalf however, and the person who has the authority to decide whether or not to retain your services will be out until Wednesday. Stay put and cooperate and you may be allowed to continue your service." There was something about the way the man said things that struck warning bells in his mind. He did know the agency was very serious about disloyalty though. Staying put might just be the best thing to do.

Staying put seemed like a damned good idea, now that the man mentioned it. "Understood, sir," he grunted in his 'abruptly-woken-up' voice. He creaked his eyes fully open and stole a look around, gauging the situation for some sort of advantage. Andrew really did intend to stay put for now, and he wanted to figure out exactly how they intended to treat him. Something in the agent's words awoke in him a strange forboding, elusive to reason, and he found, as he scanned the room, that he was running through every scrap of knowledge he had about how the NID treated those who betrayed their trust, factual or fictional, official and hearsay.

For now, best to just sit tight. The only outward indication of Andrew's inner turmoil was his ramrod-straight back and tensed muscles as he lay on the bed sedately.

Andrew knew poking around with the tech would get him in trouble and this padded cell was evidence. He had been so sure he could get away with it though. He usually could with things like that. Now he was looking at least a dismissal and probably revocation of his security clearance. Not much to do but wait and see what the review held for him. Maybe Clarkson would just use this as leverage against him. That would be like the slimy bastard. Sadly, it was the best he could hope for.

It was almost time for his meeting when alarm sirens started going off. He sat bolt upright on the bed. Those alarms meant a security breach. That meant the facility was under attack and that was just plain bad. He knew the security protocols called for destroying any evidence rather than have it fall into other hands. He was evidence.

That was when the door opened and the two black uniformed thugs walked in.

The mans head snapped back and he nearly went down with the punch. Because of Andrew's position the other man was unable to fire without hitting his buddy and did his best to repositon. The man who got the face full of knuckles recovered enough to fire off a quick burst. The three round burst proved pointless, the punch had dazed the man so badly that none of the rounds hit flesh. They did tear holes in Andrew's clothes however testifying to just how dangerous the situation was.

Andrew gritted his teeth and ignored the bullets, bringing his other fist around, aiming for the bruised guy's throat this time. His fist seemed to him, in the tiny corner of his mind able to register such details, as almost divinely guided.

This time when Andrew's fist connected he could feel cartilage crush under his blow and the man went down gasping and trying to take a breath that would never come. His way clear the second man fired his weapon full auto. The barrage of bullets tore into Fischer doing a good deal of damage, but perhaps because of his new condition, or perhaps just because of his luck they didn't kill him.

As if finally noticing that the calvary was here, Vinny allowed his glass shield to disappate as he yelled back at Captain Caine, "I'm not leavin' til we've cleared the place...sir." The last added almost as an afterthought as he turned away from the Captain and headed to the first occupied room he saw.

As Vinny turned the corner into the next room, he saw his fellow prisoner attemptimg a great impersonation of swiss cheese.

Taking only fractions of a second to come to a decision, Vinny lunged behind the would-be executioner and grabbed him by the scruff of his neck. Using his own back as a launchpad, he rolled the goon over his shoulder and threw him out into the hallway.

The man sailed through the door and slid across the hall coming to an abrupt stop against the far wall. He was upside down with his feet against the wall above his head. He did his best to bring his weapon to bear, but was being hampered by his position.

Vinny let Andrew by after realizing that he could still walk. Lt. Wright pointed down the hall to the evac point as he approached the prone guard, erecting another blast screen.

The man didn't have the chance to right himself before Vinny could close the distance and erect his force wall. Seeing it the man just goggled and dropped his weapon. Being upside down putting his hands above his head wasn't quite the same but he managed to croak out, "I surrender!"

As soon as he got out of the line of fire Andrew's legs desperately wanted to collapse under him. He couldn't help it. He stumbled and looked down at his own bloody chest, feeling his innards slosh sickeningly. Andrew clenched his teeth and looked back up, keep balance echoing hazily through his mind as he tried to stagger to the exit point.

Taking the sensible, if not cowardly guard's weapon, Vinny made the motions to knock the guy out with the butt of the weapon, and only at the last second, thought better of it.

I'd just hafta carry the mutha.

"On your feet puke!"

The guard quickly scrambled to his feet, not wanting to risk the wrath of this obviously, mentally unstable ex-prisoner.

Vinny removed the guard's sidearm while keeping the rifle aimed at him. Using the weapon to make his intentions clear, he directed the goon to proceed down the hall to the pre-appointed evac area.

Seeing that Andrew looked on the verge of passing out from blood loss, he instructed the guard to assist him down the hall.

"Nardless! Help 'im down the hall. Try anything and you'll join your two buddies in that room."

Vinny gestured towards his old accomodations, putrid black smoke trailing out the mangled portal that used to be a door.

The guard gave no further resistance as he helped Andrew, putting the wounded mans arm around his shoulder to help support him. Vinny, Andrew and the ex-guard/now prisoner were the last group to the evac point to be transported up. Only seconds after they made the round-about trip to the SGC the building imploded collapsing to the ground in a massive dust wave and with a sound that shattered glass several blocks away.
