Big Eyes, Small Mouth (BESM): Nexus Earth - Nest of Horribles

[This takes place during Chapter 14]

Level One

The Invaders circled and moved about in their nest. Cave-like crevices dotted the perimeter of this level, and the multi-legged monstrosities gathered and waited, whatever malign intelligence controlling them did not call for an assault on the remnants of Aradia yet.

A glint of a blazing projectile caught some of their notice, but far too late as it exploded into a burst of fire and wrath. A gap burst in the motley horde, and screams, alien burst about.

At that point from behind a section of rocks, Francis and the Spartans swung their weapons over the cover and began blazing away at the surprised and disorientated morass.

Finally, the Invaders got their whits together, even as more limbs and the smell of their discolored blood began to paint the rock in an dark parody of ancient cave paintings.

They charged - which was exactly the idea the Spartans had in mind. With the roar of their guns switching to fully automatic - except Nagareboshi, the tide of Invaders soon became a trickle.

Two burst onto the rocks, still alive - but Grace suddenly blew hails of bullets into one, then adjusting with surprising speed to put down the next less than a moment later.

"Whooo!" Ryan pumped his fist into the air, with excitement, "Way to go!" Francis clicked his tongue and Kelly nodded despite their glee. "Five more to go, team. The hard stuff's ahead."

They formed up with Ajax on point, and quietly moved onwards.

The Next level two levels found more resistance, with the fourth being the Egg chambers. Switching to Flamethrowers, The Spartans moved fast, destroying them all, leaving Francis to engage the few Guardians there. There was a piercing series of inhuman shrieks as they began and completed their tasks, and Kelly nodded as the group gathered to move down. "There's something big down there, stay sharp."

Level Five

Strangely, though it seemed roughly like this level was egg chambers here as well, it was bare. Only eggs dotted here and there - and no Guardians to resist the Spartan roasting techniques. More shrieks - growing louder and louder, Linda looked up from the charred remnants of the egg she'd burnt to ashes.

"Is this an ambush?"

"No...?" Francis pondered as he swept the area. "All sensor modes indicate nothing. Are they waiting for us at the core?" No ambush here, which seemed complete illogical, the eggs being completely undefended.

"If so," Kelly commented sternly, "like I said - be sharp all of you." It was an utterly un-cheery thought.

As they went down to the final level, they discovered something out of place, a Fusion reactor, providing heat. "Where the hell did that come from." Grace commented. "Tighten up, the invaders have mecha too, probably from one that was unrepairable." What it meant was they'd need to destroy it, and avoid hitting it, as there was a distinct lack of shielding around it, which meant it could go nuclear if hit hard enough. The bottom of the chamber was filled with eggs, and they heard a skittering noise. Above them, there were at least a dozen Alpha class Demon/Invader hybrid creatures, all much stronger than what they'd faced, surrounding a much larger one, The Hive Queen. "Holy Shit." Ryan and indeed the whole team were abit taken aback. "Switch to fleshripper rounds, we can't risk the reactor going off." The team did so, and the creatures had yet to Descend, as the group moved back to a wall, to protect their backs. Some of the eggs looked ready to hatch, as they could see something moving within them. "Don't let them near you, especially the hatchlings. Francis, I;m going to need you to lead the squad, so I can place the charges on the reactor."

Even as she spoke the warriors began to move, they were coming.

Three of the Alphas attacked, shooting a cascade of spines at the Spartans, their energy fields holding against the onslaught, even as four opened fire, two to a target, dropping the numbers from 13-7 to 11-7. "Stay sharp.." Kelly pointed as the acidic blood melted the rock around it where it splashed. "MAx shields, and ready the reactive panels. Francis if you don't have shielding stay in the center. We'll do what we can."

The Spartans formed around Francis, and he looked at the odds. Eleven to Seven could change fast, if the eggs hatched. Focusing on a knot of Alphas, he focused with Nagareboshi. "Comet Bullet."

A projectile whizzing, and burst-flame consuming Demon-Invaders.

What was impressive is that the shot kept going, blasting out a huge gouge in the side of the nest, removing two more of the Alphas, even as the Spartans remaining opened up again. another pair dropped, with even odds now.

That was when the queen came into play, battering aside Ryan and Ajax like ragdolls, their shields flaring flickering and winking out. Their vitals dropped, the monster had done alot of damage with just swinging itss arms and tail. It spit a stream of acid at Kelly, who deftly dodged, but even so, some of the splash caused her shield to flare.. This stuff was potent and very lethal.

Grace knelt to Cover and check on the downed spartans, as Kelly and Fred kept up the fire on the alphas. If they could get rid of the little ones, they might get rid of the queen faster.

Oh great. Francis, wary of the collateral damage risks, but aware that the queen was going to wreak havoc, switched to regular bullets on the Alphas, hoping to save energy.

Two more went down to his shots, and the queen lashed out at him, swinging her tail, which he noticed was tipped with large spines. It lashed out at Kelly with it's claws, as Grace took several spine attacks, but remained standing.

Francis saw it sweep in, and tried to vault over each swipe. He managed the first, but the second had one spike stab deep into his thigh. Bitting back the pain, he realized this beast would probably take them out if not taken out first.

"Ok, you, Queenie, and me. Comet Bullet!" And Nagareboshi belched fire out as a counterpoint.

Another Alpha dropped, and The queen screamed in rage at the damage, as one of her four arms came away. She knocked kelly aside, a big spine breaking off in her shoulder, also preventing her shields to come up.

Grace and Fred opened up again, taking down one of the last alphas, as The queen spat acid at Francis

The acid came in a great vitriolic spray, but it was met with glowing energy as Francis vented his armored in a defensive maneuver that stopped the wave sharp. The ground was eaten up nastily though. Francis glared back and fired another Comet Bullet, not even commanding this time.

It hit her again taking another arm, and the last Alphas dropped. "Focus fire on the queen!" The remaining members opened up on the queen, who began to sweep them Aside. Only Kelly and Grace were left standing, and Grace was purely defensive now, "I've only got one shield grenade left. You and Francis better finish this now!"

*Right, you heard her Nagareboshi.* Francis communicated to his Zanpakuto, even as he lined up another bead. *One... more... shot!* The Comet Bullet rocketed off, dead-on, but would it finish the Queen?

"Grace, fall back!" Francis ordered. At this rate, they'd be lucky if he kept alive to around to get them medical care. He lifted a foot, and then charged at the Queen, daring to leap on the tail and dart around spikes before firing another Comet Bullet.

Grace didn't budge, and the queen took the comet bullet to the face, Exploding in a hail of acidic gore. Grace got the shield grendae up at the las second covering her and everyone but kelly and Francis. both of whom were splashed by the acid...

Francis, able to wipe it away consciously suffered only minor chemical burns, but he had to react fast save kelly from a gruesome death. Her armor was being eaten away quickly.

100 damage, bypasses armor, your regen keeps the additional burn from getting out of hand. you have 2 roungs to clean off the acid from kelly before it overwhelms her suit's healing and kills her.

The spray ate at his flesh and hurt, already alerts that his regenerative armor features were inadequate. It didn't matter, Kelly was swathed in it, and trusting he could make it through, he ran to her side and started wiping away the acid. Naturally it was biting even more, but even with tears Francis ignored it.

Sounga had done far far worse to him than Invader ichor. More alerts of armor integrity damage. He didn't care. Kelly had no business dying now...

Francis is at 490 HP, having taken 200 direct damage for acid, cleaning it off, and additional burns.

With Francis' help Kelly's armor kept her alive, though the entire back of it was gone, and her back would be covered in scars. Finally the remains of her armor showed him a miracle of satoshi tech, HarJel. The healing substance secreeted from the edges of her armor soon covered her back, the entire span, then hardened and sealed her armor's integrity again, while pumping up its healing properties.

When the shield grenade finally lost power, Grace came running over. "You saved her life, Francis.." She cracked open her medical kit to treat the burns to his hands. "Ruri can make some new gauntlets for you.:

Maybe because no one was looking, but Grace quickly embraced him in surprisingly strong arms. "Thank you so much for saving Kelly, I can never repay that debt."

*OOF* Francis shook his head. "You owe me nothing. I'm just doing what has to be done for comrades. And once the armor's nano-tech returns online, it'll restore to full integrity eventually." The reactor was still going, he observed. "So, set charges and then I'll teleport us out before blowing it?"

Francis found the control, and tapped it, teleporting out the downed Spartans. His finger hovered on the button. "Ready to take us away on your go." Grace set up everything and shouted, "Go!"

Before the underground lit up with ferocious explosions, Grace and Francis were gone, back up top with the injured, and then Francis teleported them again back to the base camp.
