Aberrant: Dead Rising - Chapter 12e: Black Water

Draygo flew south. He wasn’t sure where or why he headed that way, but his wings beat a path and he followed it. The high air cooled his oversized body; the occasional thermal gave him the rest of a long glide. It wasn’t until he saw the blue water of the Gulf that he knew he’d wanted to see the vast expanse of the water. The openness below him made his heart pound and filled him with elation.

For a while, he just cruised along, following the coastline. He felt a sense of peace up here, one that was incredibly strong. There were urges simmering in him, urges to keep flying and never stop. Only his obligations – to the Refuge and mostly to Dylan – kept him from changing this to a long-term flight. However, he could go quite a distance on a temporary flight and so he found himself turning left and heading east instead of turning around and going north.

A smudge of smoke appeared before him. Cocking his head to one side, Draygo studied it, then began to drop lower. Smoke meant humans, usually – this close to the water, he couldn’t think of anything else it would be.

He flew over, taking in the scene: a narrow barrier island held one group of people fighting people on the boats. Draygo wasn’t sure what was going on; there were few clues to who was on the ‘right’ side.

Draygo knew that he should probably stay out of it. What would he be able to do short of either having everybody start shooting at him instead of each other or having to kill everybody, most likely because they did the first.

He should leave, this wasn't his problem, but he wasn't that kind of dragon. But, he didn't know what was going on, and that could be more harmful than helpful, so he decided to circle the area and see what he could find out.

He's flying slightly above eye level, far enough away that he hopes to not cause people to freak out, but close enough to be seen. Have them react how you will.

His lazy circle kept him out of range of their weaponry, and apparently out of their view as well. No one really reacted to him as he kept watch from the safety of the sky.

Draygo did see one thing interesting. A small form in a diving suit crept up from the water into the bushes not too far from the fighting. The person didn’t seem interested in fighting; instead, it began to work its way over to one of the buildings, avoiding combat completely.

No one fighting rolled over the difficulty to see Draygo. Yes, he is a large mass in the sky. In actual combat, tunnel vision is a common thing, as the brain shuts out anything that isn't an immediate threat. Hence why there was a difficulty.

That's interesting. Draygo thought, as images of looters and deserters flashed through his mind.

Draygo angled his flight to bring him around the fighting to right behind the guy that had caught his eye.

He landed behind the guy, and spoke in a low rumbling voice.

"Hello."

The guy turned out to be a girl. She was skinny - clearly young, all legs and elbows, who managed to be somewhat graceful as she spun around. Her freckles stood out darkly against her pale face. That wasn't as impressive as the fact that she did it without screaming in fright. Her expression was clearly terrified, but she maintained her composure.

"Whadda want?" she gasped and just those two words dripped with the thick sounds of the bayou.

Neither Draygo or Nathan had any children, and young as she was, she was just a little past the 'melt a heart of stone cute' stage. That coupled with the fact that she wasn't actively hostile or running away screaming meant that handing the situation over to Nathan didn't immediately spring to his mind. So, while he didn't transform back into a human (which may or may not have been even more traumatic for the little girl), he did kneel down. Of course, at over 7' tall, even sitting he would still be taller than her.

Not much for talking, he kept his replies short. "Trying to figure out what's going on" Draygo said as he motioned back towards the fighting with his head. "And what you're up to." He motioned toward her with his head, not wanting to point with his gleamingly sharp talons.

“Uhhh…” The girl looked startled and more than a little off-balance. Blinking rapidly, she said, “Dey took ou’ med’cine – Ah’m supposed to sneak in and take it back! Tha’re da thieves!” Every word dripped with the honeyed tones of the Deep South.

Behind Draygo, someone else finally took notice. Turning, the young man saw the dragon-man hunched over the girl on the ground. With a snarl, he aimed and fired his rifle, trying to kill it. The bullet did nothing to Draygo’s hide, but it did get his attention.

Draygo processed the info that the little girl had given him. Humans killing other humans, because other humans stole medicine from humans, and using that as a diversion for humans to steal back their medicine from other humans... all in a post-apocalyptic world that is over run with zombies...

He gave a glance over his shoulder as the shot ricocheted off his skin then flexed his legs until he was standing full height. As he stood up he motioned towards the building that the little girl had been heading towards. His voice was low and rumbling, like the thunder from an approaching storm. "Go inside. Things could get messy."

With that, hoping that the little girl would heed his advice (it was where she was headed anyway), he turned and walked towards the fray... specifically toward the man who had shot him. His pace was steady, about a fast walk, but with his long legs, he covered the ground quickly, electricity flashing in his eyes.

The man he was walking toward got the idea of what was going on pretty quickly. He shouted something inaudible over the gunfire. The three men next to him also turned their guns on Draygo - and then the girl shouted again. "Wa', tha's mah brotha! Don' hurt 'em!"

Draygo could hear her running after him, concern making her brave.

Draygo stopped and turned on a dime, a somewhat impressive feat for something of his mass. He spread out his wings to give her further protection as he spoke. "I want to stop the hurting. Doesn't mean they feel the same. I'll do everything I can to protect your brother. Go inside, now, for your own safety."

He waited until she actually started heading towards the shelter before he stood up and turned back around, leaving his wings open until he heard the door open and shut.

Once the little girl was as out of harm's way as she could be, Draygo lifted his head and a column of lightning raced towards the sky, while an earthshaking roar rolled across the ground and the water.

Hopefully that'll get everyone's attention...

It did; almost every combatant on the field spun to stare at him. There was dead silence for a long beat as each side waited to see what would happen. “Is that a… mutant gater?” someone asked and that broke the plateau. Draygo found a lot of weapons pointing themselves at him as both sides decided that a dragon-man-alligator who spat lightning was a bigger threat than their fellow man.

"Good." Draygo rumbled to no one in particular. The fighting had stopped. He hadn't made it a habit in the past, butting into other people's affairs, but after having seen, and fought very powerful zeds for the survival of a handful of people, to now see two groups killing each other over the medicine that was supposed to heal people... it was deplorable, disgusting, and abominable, and he wasn't going to let it continue.

Draygo walked between the two groups, where moments before bullets had flown and didn't seem to care that every single gun was pointed at him. Once he reached the center, he stopped and looked at both sides, one after the other. His voice caused small ripples in the pockets of still water trapped on the beach. "Who are your leaders? Who is in charge of this slaughter?"

There was an uneasy movement, then a man bulled forward. “I’m Winder,” he grunted, “and this is my community.”

“Community of thieves!” one woman shouted.

“Better than murderers!” another person shouted back. After that, the shouting became a general clamor of accusations. Draygo could make out little in the shouts and screams.

With a flap of his wings Draygo took off, and landed right in front of Winder. His lips parted in a mockery of a smile, showing rows of gleaming, dagger-like teeth. When he spoke his voice was almost inaudibly low. "Come with me." He then did the best that he could to grab the man by his shirt front and without tearing it too badly or hurting him.

In one swift motion, he lifted Winder off his feet and flew to the woman who had spoken up first, and did the same with her.

Then, just as quickly, he flew up and up and up, hopefully out of weapons range. "Ok now, let's talk."

If this is too much, or you want any rolls for this, let me know. I was hoping that it would be allowable under narrative, since he's not trying to start a combat.

There was no talk at first; the woman and Winder were too busy holding onto him and freaking out about the height to even worry about what Draygo wanted them to say. He waited, his wings flapping lazily, as they slowly calmed down and managed to gather themselves. "Now," Draygo asked, "what is going on here?"

"This woman's group attacked mine for the medicine we have," Winder growled. "Now do ya mind puttin' me down? Safe on the ground and all."

"You stole em from us!" the woman protested. Her voice shook with fear but she was meeting Draygo's eyes.

"You sold 'em to us and then tried to charge more after we'd agreed," Winder spit. "We took what we bought and left ya the food, as we'd agreed!"

Draygo continued to flap lazily, simply maintaining altitude. He held them far enough apart that they couldn't hit or kick each other, but otherwise didn't interfere in their back and forth. When Winder asked to be put down, he did respond. "Until we reach a mutual agreement, the only way down is the quick way." To emphasize his point, he let them drop just a little, probably just a 1/2" to an inch, but it was enough to make his point about which way was the quick way.

Once they had finished their accusations of each other, which was actually very informative, Draygo stepped in. He brought the woman closer to his face, close enough to smell the ozone on his breath. "Is this true, did you change the price after it had been agreed upon? You are at fault." He straightened his arm back out, and brought Widner in just as close. "Is this true, did you take the medicine without paying the most recent price they asked for it? You are at fault."

He straightened both arms to their full extension, and looked the woman and then Widner straight in the eye, and went back and forth between them as he spoke. "I declare you both guilty. You for changing a struck deal and you for taking the medicine anyway. Your action, your reaction, and your reaction to that have cost the lives of survivors. There is a world full of zombies out there who don't care about you or your children. They kill without mercy. I hunt them, destroy them, to try and save what's left of humanity." Draygo let what he had said sink in over the course of a few beats of his wings.

"What you have to decide is if you all are with me in saving humanity, or if you are a blight to humanity that needs to be destroyed like the zombies...

...your choice."

The woman hastily agreed to help save humanity, but Winder was made of sterner stuff. "What do you mean, exactly?" he grunted, both of his hands wrapped around the wrist of the man-dragon holding him. "You say you want us to make a choice but those choices aren't very clear, to me. What do you want us to do?"

The man was being brave and perhaps a touch defiant, but Draygo sensed that he was being honest in his confusion and desire to know. He did really wanted to know what Draygo expected of him - so perhaps he'd missed the point of the discussion to this point. Of course, the woman stank so heavily of fear that Draygo wouldn't be surprised to learn that she'd agree to anything right now.

Draygo's voice was low and not pleased as he spoke, but he spoke plainly. "First the killing stops, now and in the future. If someone commits a crime worthy of death, then that person is punished. No. More. War." Draygo let that sink in to both of them, though he mainly kept his eyes trained on the man.

Then he continued. "Second, I want your two peoples to agree to help each other. Protection, supplies, whatever one needs the other supplies. Goes both ways. You can keep your communities separate, or you can join them, I don't care, but you will aid each other. Be good humans."

Draygo flapped his wings lazily as he let what he said sink in and waited for a response. The first part shouldn't be extremely difficult, both sides keep what they have, and go their own ways. The second Draygo knew to be a stretch. If banishment from each other's territory was the only way to keep the peace (though that could easily lead to border disputes), then so be it, but the mutual aid one of the other would be much better for them and humanity as a whole in the long run... Draygo hoped that they could see past this incident to the larger picture.
