Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Well, last night was opening night. I have to say.. best movie ever. And yes, I realize I have said this before and undoubtedly will say it again, because I feel that way every time I see a movie I like. Because words can't describe how pleased I am with the movie, let me just point out a few of its finer points.

The casting was perfect. Jude Law as Sky Captain made for a male lead the likes of which are rarely seen these days, and was a perfect balance of the ridiculous level of steel nerves and super-capability, and human imperfection. Gwyneth Paltrow, as Polly, is a wonderful example of a Lois Lane-type female reporter - loving, yet deceptive and a bit bitchy. Angelina Jolie's character is fairly minor, in case you were wondering, but a very good addition nonetheless.

There was just the right level of between-character raillery - it wasn't ubiquitous enough to interfere with the plot. The one-liners were short and very sweet, and the kind of jokes you remember and still get a kick out of after the movie is over. My favorite quote: "Can't we just once die without all this bickering?"

That covers a lot. One other aspect that I noticed and approved of was the cameramanship. Obviously, I know very little about this, but it struck me as very artful the way the film was shot. I would have enjoyed watching it even without words, because almost every scene was artfully arranged and colored. For this reason, I recommend seeing it in theatres.

I think I won't say any more, at the risk of spoiling something for someone. But I highly recommend the movie, especially for people who, like me, find ordinary movies a little taxing on the attention span. ::blush On a final note, knowledge of the pulp genre or time period is not at all prerequisite to enjoy the movie.

It got panned in the review I saw over here. Something about the actors having no sense of the surroundings due to the blue screening.

Then again, that was in the Metro. For those that don't know it, the Metro is the free paper that they give away at all the train and tube stations in London in the hopes that people will be interested enough to buy the not so free parent paper, The Times.. It's well known for headlines along the lines of 'Minister in child porn fiasco' - which, if you bother to read the story, will turn out to be a church minister rather than a government minister, and his involvement will be something along the lines of saying 'I really don't approve of all these paedophiles these days'.

Same here, actually.. But before I read the review, I didn't even know that the whole movie had been shot on a blue stage, and I didn't think the actors looked uncoordinated at all. But you know, that's just me; I hardly think a movie's worth watching unless the critics savage it.
