World of Darkness: Attrition - A Truly Long Night [complete]

Amber rolled her eyes. "Sarah get with the fuckin' program or stay out of the way. No one expects you to come and kill the shits that have already tried to kill you, but if you get in the way, I'll give you a dirt nap until we're done. Don't fuck up this op because you're losin' your fuckin' spine."

The bristling werewolf looked at Jeremy. "You ready?"

Jeremy sighed, then nodded. "Thanks for the advice. Let's go then Amber." He pulled a knife out from the pouch and held it blade pointing down at the ground. "I'll get low once we get past the tree-line around the church." He then started slowly walking off toward the direction indicated.

Owns-The-Night kicked off his battered sneakers and trotted barefoot in the direction of the church, staying under cover as much as possible, his spear held low in an easy one-handed grip. He moved on the balls of his feet as he angled towards the rear of the church. At the treeline he stopped, crouching low in the shadows beside one of the trees. After a second he swelled in size, taking on a lot more muscle mass and height. Shoulders swelled to stretch the baggy sweatshirt, leg muscles pushed at the stretchy fabric of the raggedy sweatpants as his ears elongated and his face distorted faintly, characteristic of the Dalu shape. Silver eyes tinged faintly with gold now, he examined the gravel surface ahead along with the rear facing of the church, looking for motion sensors that might trip an exterior light... or an alarm.

As he neared the edge of the trees, Jeremy stopped and crouched. Thinking for a moment about the value of his Glamor here, he focused for a moment, closing his eyes and enhanced his nimble nature. Then, deciding to bulk up his Glamor for the battle, he drew on the feeling of battle around them. He must have not been fully psyched, as the amount leeched was moderate only.

Amber rolled her eyes as Sarah had her snit and walked away. Amber was honestly more worried about her doing her job than what she said, so she let it go. Putting her ex-cousin out of her mind, she stripped to nothing, then shifted to the wolf, heedless of her moment of nakedness. On padded feet, she crept to Jeremy's side, her nose picking out the secrets of the night.

Too bad the night didn't appear to be very forthcoming right now.

Jeremy turned, and did a double take upon seeing the wolf beside him, before realizing it was Amber. "Well... " he let the word drain off. "Well, I stored up some Glamor magic, and I've used a little for some help in stalking. Shall we go?"

Moss nodded to his colleagues as they headed out then turned and made his way as quietly as he could through the brush up the ridge, aiming to come out to the side of the church. Once at the top of the ridge he kept low as he slowly approached, looking for any people on that side of the building. Stopping in the bushes bordering the car park he looked for any motion sensors, built in lights or other security features. He wasn't looking foward to having to cross the gravel, but did his best to find a route across using the more worn places were it would be thinner, and hopefully less noisy.

Jeremy glanced at the dirt markings, then up to Amber's eyes. "Sure, but-" he turned and snagged a nearby pine cone with the other hand. "We need to lure them away from the lights, preferably separate. See you on the other side." With that he crouch-walked off, trying to make as little noise as possible. He headed down to the side of the church, but stopped before the gravel. He could see the light shining bright from front of the building. So close to the Hunters, but he had to be careful. He listened to see if he could hear anything.

Making her way through the woods, Sarah started to relax a bit. Luna's pale light filtered down through the trees, playing patterns across the sparse underbrush and ground. The scents of the wild caressed her sensitive nose as paws padded across beds of pine needles and moss. For a brief few moments, she was able to forget just how bad things were likely to become.

Then, with all the abruptness of a machete's cut, the woods fell away in a line of gravel, the side of the church looming ahead.

"Kathy and I gotta take Adam shopping in the morning for a costume, we promised. It's his first play and all, we want him to look the part you know?"

The words came unbidden from her memory, and she knew that in a few minutes, a loving husband and father would be lost to cruel jaws and sharp knives. He's the one in the wrong, she reminded herself. He made his choices. He cast his lot. It made her feel, if not better, at least more justified in the slaughter to come. But it did not expunge the thought of a sundered family - like my own - from her mind.

Steeling herself as much as her conscience would permit, the Dead-Wolf tested the gravel with a paw. Someone had done a good job on this; the surface had been rolled and compacted into something that wouldn't throw stones and form swales every time a car turned its wheels. It wasn't quite a proper macadam - too new for that, she realized - but it would bear a quick dash by an 80-pound wolf without undue disturbance (and more important, undue noise).

With paws set in the good soil just past the gravel's edge, Sarah bound herself up like a spring, then release that tension all as one, bounding across the open space as fast as her undead legs would carry her wolf-like body. She came to a stop beside the massive bulk of the Cadillac, peering carefully under and around the vehicle before making her quiet way over to the side of the sanctuary, just beside an emergency exit.

Body pressed up against the building on the leeward side of the door, Sarah waited for the grim deeds to come.

Seeing (and hearing and smelling) nothing that caused him any alarm, Owns-The-Night moved in a half crouch, his movements exaggerated as he picked his foot up high before moving it forward, placing it carefully, then finally transferring his weight to it in order to take the next step with his other foot. By itself, the flamingo-like walk was almost funny to behold, but the large Rahu moved like a ghost over the packed gravel with hardly a sound to flatten against the rear wall of the church, his slightly wolflike ears twitching as he strained to hear any sound from beyond the exit door there.

[Jeremy]

Carefully he approached the edge of the parking gravel, if these guys could see and hear 50 yards away, they sure weren't doing it at the moment.

They remained oblivious to his presence, continuing to just stare out into the dimly lit parking lot.

[sarah]

The swift 80lb dash across the gravel kicked up few pebbles but trying silently stop during a all out sprint is never an easy thing. As she broke her speed a few pebbles kicked up and tinged off the undercarriage of the Cadillac.

"You hear that?" Righty asked, peeking his head around towards where the cars were parked.

"No, what?" Lefty asked, trying to shield his lighter from a slight breeze as he lit a cigarette.

"I heard something, by the cars. Wait here, I'll go check it out." He pulled a flashlight out of his pocked and held it under his hunting rifle. Slowly he crept around the corner and shined the light on the cars, the small Mag-Lite didn't offer much of a cone, but the new LED bulbs sure did provide a clear beam of light.

[Declan]

His movement to the rear of the church set off no alarms or warnings, silently, like Ninjwolf, he made his was near the door and listened.

On the opposite end, most likely in the sanctuary, he heard voices but they were too far and through too many walls for him to make them out clearly. He could guess at the obvious two speakers, but if there were others, they weren't talking.

Sarah had a panoramic view as Amber stalked her first victim of the night. Some part of her mind imagined two uniformed officers knocking at the door of a tidy suburban house, a 30-something woman opening the door only to fall into sobs a moment later as they expressed their regrets.

She watched as a man was about to die at the hands of a monster. Watched, and said not a word, made not a move. And even though she knew why it had to be this way, she hated herself for it.

Amber, there are no othr cars in the gravel, only the three parked on the side and the three H3's parked in the front. I assume you tossed the stick against the farthest pick-up truck.

"See!" The hunting rifle pointed at the pick up truck on the far end of the three vehicles. "There it was again!"

"Yeah, I heard it." Lefty hefted a massive revolver from the inside of his coat. "Prolly a opossum or something scurrying about. Five bucks if you can hit it first."

"I'm certainly not about to shoot an animal for kicks." He crept closer to the pick up truck. "It's more than likely just scared and lost on it's way back to the garbage cans." Lowering his rifle he walked about looking between the cars, closing on Amber's position.

"Fine, but if the fucker eats your face off and you get rabies, I don't wanna hear no shit about it." Moving around to the back of the vehicles Lefty raced the revolver preparing for the recoil in case whatever it was took off Righty's face.

Amber would be 'holding action' if we were in combat rounds; as it is, she's going to attack her guy when she sees Jeremy go for his. The plan is to get him by the face so that if he screams, it will be muffled by his wolf face-mask. Barring that, a throat shot should do it, too.

Chancing a glance around the corner, Jeremy saw that their attention was elsewhere, toward the cars. It had to be Amber. He cautiously dropped the pine-cone, and focused all his energy toward moving silently to get behind Lefty. As soon as he was close enough, he shot his hand around Lefty's mouth, and pulled him back, bringing the knife into position.

The grey wolf watched with eyes far too pained for such a creature. A wolf should be able to accept the necessities of a predator's life without flinching. A wolf should know that enemies need to be stopped and simply do what is needed to make that happen.

Part of Sarah was that wolf. But a very critical part was not. And as she watched Amber send one of the two guards into a bloody death, as she sat there and did not a thing to prevent it, that critical part took a very serious kick in its underpinnings.

The truth of the matter was, she felt awful for what was happening, necessary or no. And the Dead-Wolf wasn't sure what bothered it more: that this piece of horror was happening, or that it was so disturbed by something that should have been part of predatory instincts that had never had a chance to develop.

While part of her mind recommitted itself to pursuing the Path of Harmony, a small and quiet part did something quite different. From the corners of those pained eyes, bloody tears formed for a fallen man.

This was going to be a godawful slaughter. There was no getting around it, when she heard the back door break in and saw Amber heading toward the front with murder in her eyes and dripping from her teeth. And Sarah wanted none of it.

This isn't anything close to right, she decided, even if some of the bastards in there would do the same thing to us. We don't have to be that kind of... -- she mused over the word for a moment, before finishing -- ...monster.

Would Amber think less of her? Absolutely. Probably Declan and the others as well. They might not even talk to her again. But Sarah was almost past the point of caring.

While the church turned into bloody mayhem behind her, she stalked off into the surrounding trees, where she turned to wait for the horror to end.

Amber shifted up, ignoring her nakedness. She pulled the wallets off the guys, then handed them to Jeremy. "Hold these." She eyed the door and said, "You get-"

The crunch of a door getting kicked in caught her ears. "Get the door open, but stay low. I'll go in first." With that, she shifted rapidly back to the wolf form and moved to crouch next to the door, her body singing with tension. Her golden eyes almost shone in the dark as she waited for the faerie to open the door.

It didn't take long for Sarah's conscience to turn on itself. It's all well and good to say, No, I will not kill tonight. It is not so well and good when your friends and family are walking into the lion's den.

As Moss and then Amber entered the den of hunters, the Dead Wolf cringed. This cannot, she knew, end well.

Within the church, the nine men gathered there were all getting to their feet, a medley of metallic clicks and clacking sounds filling the air as they grabbed for their guns. Three of them seemed cut from the same cloth as those unfortunate departed souls that had fallen to knife and fangs out front. Their faces reflected alarm, uncertainty, and a strong element of fear as they clumsily started readying handguns.

The other six men were cut of very different cloth. They too betrayed some alarm on their faces, but no uncertainty or hesitation, and their movements were deft and sure as they rose and moved into pairs, hands beginning to ready their sleek, lethal-looking shotguns (and in one case, submachinegun) with ingrained professionalism.

All of the men were focused on the rear of the church and the recent crash of Owns-The-Night's entrance, bar one pair of professionals who were glancing towards the side door, having heard the thud and rattle of No-Moss's attempted entry.

Silent. Deadly. Fast. The werewolf bolted up the church aisle, the click of her nails on the hardwood floor failing to catch the hunters' attentions in time. Between one step and the next, the pale wolf became a pale monster, a nightmarish creature of legend. The Urshal was as big as a pony, all power and lethal precision.

She didn't leap on the hunter; there was no need. Her jaws closed around his torso, ripping through the minimal armor. With a savage twist of her head, she ripped the wound open even further.

As the hunter screamed and his companions turned to look at him, Amber glared back at them. The hunter dropped to her feet as black lips curled away from bloodied fangs, and she looked like the demon she'd been labeled. As the hunters gathered themselves, the 'demon' snarled at them, their companion's blood dripping to the floor in an eerie staccato.

As the Hunters began to react to the fact they were under attack and that there was a large, pale-furred dire wolf in their midst, the blood of one of their own painting it's muzzle, Owns-The-Night burst through the doorway connecting the church proper to the offices behind it, a snarl on his face and the faint golden glimmers of his harnessed rage glowing in his silver eyes like banked fires. With a thrust of his longer, more powerful Dalu legs he leapt towards the foe, even as the already-shaken amateur Hunters cried out in fear and panic. The Rahu twirled and leveled his spear at one of the dark-clothed men readying a shotgun and thrust, a well-practiced move that took the human through the stomach.

The man screamed as the keen steel blade opened him up and fell back, one hand clamping over the bloody wound in his stomach as his other brought the shotgun up.

At the edge of the woods, Sarah was caught in a snare of her own design. So much of her wanted to dash back, to help the others who followed Luna through the long nights, to stand by them in this moment of truth. But a core bequeathed to her from an all-too mortal life and locked in an undying stasis - a core from which the Dead-Wolf desperately wanted to escape - was appalled at what doing so would mean.

And so she was frozen in the moment.

Even as they cried out in startled alarm and the first stirrings of fear, the dark-clad gunmen reacted with well-drilled moves to the sudden and savage onslaught from front and rear. Rather than an easily panicked Lunacy-stricken flock, the wolves had found themselves amidst a well-trained and equipped dog pack.

Shouting to each other, still keeping to their assigned pairs, they moved as one. The partner of the one Owns-The-Night had speared steadied his buddy, not letting him fall as both opened up at point-blank range at the Rahu. Their shotguns fairly ripped the large humanoid form to pieces, blood and worse spraying out behind him as he fell backwards, not even enough lung remaining in his body for a scream as he called on his spiritual reserves to knit torn flesh back together again. The Wolf inside him surged up, the offense to It's flesh too great to be borne, sweeping Owns-The-Night's rational mind aside in a surge of wild fury and rage that made the Blood Talon's eyes glow like molten gold.

Fur sprouted, arms lengthened and shoulders thickened yet further as what rose from the floor bore no resemblance to Man at all. The previously bestial humanoid features had been replaced with a snarling muzzle set above gleaming, death-filled jaws. The large Gauru gave a blood-flecked roar of defiance and killing lust, it's talons gleaming as brightly as the cast aside and forgotten spear.

The Hunter at Amber's feet scrambled aside, wincing from the bleeding wound in his back as he and his partner likewise opened fire on the snarling Uratha, buckshot peppering her pale-furred hide and leaving red blossoms of pain behind.

The Hunter with the SMG dove over the pews that were hemming the others in, reacting to put distance between himself and the two dangerous foes in the midst of the brawl behind him. He spotted No-Moss ducking behind cover off to his left and the MP-5 came up with well-practised ease, squeezing off a short burst at the ducking Ithaeur. His partner played wingman, his shotgun joining the cacophony of gunfire, screams, snarls and roars that filled the small church. Bullets and buckshot ripped into No-Moss savagely.

The three men who fancied themselves Hunters before this night suddenly realised, as a group, that they wanted no part of this. None at all. In a handful of heartbeats their world had changed from one where monsters cringed from the forces of Light into a darker, bloodier world where not even the protection of God's House could keep the wolf from the door. Monsters were everywhere, roaring and seeming to shrug off gunfire, which in itself was deafening and unsettling to men who were not hardened to combat. They hesitated a moment, the monkey part of the brain wanting to flee but seeing no salvation. Monsters were at every turn, and there was no escape-

No. See? There!

Screaming in panic and fear, the three men made for the only exit that didn't have an enemy in the way, casting aside their weapons as they ran. They hit the emergency exit without breaking stride and almost fell over one another in their haste to be free of the nightmare behind them. Sarah Dead-Wolf, from her vantage in the treeline, saw them come barreling out of her exit, stumbling and almost falling, to flee shrieking towards the road and the perceived safety of lights and civilisation.

Amber saw the fleeing prey, which triggered a primal response of chase! Normally, she would have ignored it, but orders from Declan allowed her to indulge in this instinct.

She followed the hunters, meaning only to bite one. Her massive teeth flashed in the darkness, and pierced only darkness. The werewolf had a rare miss.
