Mutants & Masterminds: Future Imperfect - Chapter 3.1: The Mutants strike back

"We save what we can," Adrian mutters hopelessly.

To Sam, "Is there anyway you could wake them up so they at least have a chance to exit before this ship comes down? Hell, that hurts the ship's operations too, right?"

He didn't hestitate though, or slow down. Getting the mission done was still foremost on his mind.

"If I keep this pace up, I won't have any juice left for when we get to the Control Center. When I take over the ship, I can release everyone and not crash the ship. Last thing we need right now is extra baggage to worry about. Let's focus on the current goal."

It wasn't the answer she wanted to give, but the necessary one. Her parents could be in there for all she knew, a distraction she definitely didn't need.

Kevin nodded after Sam spoke. "It's not the way that we'd like to do it, but I think her plan is best. We have no way to get them out of the ship immediately, and we have enough to look after with just ourselves if we encounter more resistance.

I hate to admit it, but I think she's right." It was easy to tell from his tone that he'd much rather be in there with the prisoners, healing, helping and getting them the heck out of there; but he was the General and they had a mission to do, and in completing that mission, they'd free these prisoners and any others as well.

Big picture... big picture...

"Fuck. There were already people tanked up in there but more where just caged. Dammit." Travis' hands formed into fists repeatedly, opening and closing as he stared at the door. Finally he shook his head. "We have to move on, we can't spare even one of us to protect these people from the robots and if she's right we can get them out of here no problem once we take over the ship. If I were still in contact with Sly maybe we could do something immediately ... but I'm not and we can't. We move on, and we come back for these people no matter what." He turned to Sam, his expression already hard was now becoming set into something unreadable by any but Ronnie. Ronnie however knew that expression, it was the same expressions she had seen before he had vanished those years before, and it spoke to her that he was ready to do whatever it took even if it meant tearing his way back through the ship alone to save these people.

Determined to move on and get their mission accomplished the mutants worked their way through the next door leaving the prisoners behind for the time being. Sam easily bypassed the security systems and even managed to reroute an escort through a false corridor buying them precious time to reach the bridge.

Arriving at the last door Sam nodded to the others just before she hacked the doors security code – the door opened and hell broke out. Kevin had his Forcefield up pushing strong against the ensuing blasts that got fired upon them. Adrian and Ronnie quickly jumped into the room drawing some of the fire towards them. Ronnie managed to pin down one of the machines in a grapple and was about to continue to rip it in pieces while Adrian simple shrugged of the bullets that his opponent unloaded on him. With a smirk he closed the distance to the machine and bent it’s barrelled arm upwards destroying the mass-driver cannon.

Sam kept hidden behind Kevin’s forcefield who slowly moved forward always making sure to cover both Sam and Travis.

“I need to get to the command console!”, Sam yelled over the noise pointing at the center of the room where 2 more robots and an oddly long limbed Alien stood. Travis only got a brief glimpse to make out where his targets were and acknowledged Sam’s information by simply repeating the manoeuvre he did with the two other robots a few minutes ago. The way was clear for Sam and only a few feet and another alien stood in their way.

Adrian hefted up the robot he had mangled and thurled it at one of the other robots. He longed to pound it into one of the long-limbed aliens, but now was the time to take care of business first. He planned to get it though, or maybe Ronnie with her wicked claws would. What ever pity he might have had for it's fate was ameliorated by the death and damage it had brought to his world. It was payback time!

Ronnie focused on fully disabling the robot she was already on. Snarling, she tore into it, ripping pieces and bits away - but failing to get anything that even hampered the machine.

Travis stepped forward, a grin on his face that did not match the fury in his eyes. "Time to die you alien son of a bitch! You remember me? You remember torturing me you ugly fuck!?! Time to reap what you've sown!" Travis flung his hands forward and a pair of rippling, twisting, churning bolts of power streaked out toward the alien. Travis almost felt bad that there wouldn't be a prisoner to torture and question, almost.

[Round 1; Initiative 14]

Kevin didn't have time to move his force field to protect the alien from Travis' attack. The only reason it crossed his mind was that they might need him (and the fact that it was a living creature... and Kevin had always respected life, which is why he chose the life he did).

But, the damage was done, so Kevin surveyed the bridge, looking for any other threats, and, seeing that Ronnie hadn't completely disabled her robot, put his force field between it and the group of Travis, Sam and himself.

Of course, once all the threats in the bridge were eliminated, Kevin would move his force field back to the doorway, covering both their rears and their escape.

The strike team quickly took control of the room and combat was almost as fast over as it started. Adrian saw that Ronnie was still struggling with her opponent and took a chance by throwing his disabled robot using it as an impromptu weapon. His aim was good and only brushed Ronnie slightly across her upper body ripping her tank top as the machine flailed with its arms.

The impact was strong enough to rip off the prone machines head off on which Ronnie was struggling to get a grip on. She glared angrily at the kid and adjusted her top which exposed more of her skin than she liked.

Kevin moved in together with Sam keeping his eyes out for their backs. So far his Force Field was doing a good job and it looked like the 'standard' weapons of the robots couldn't breach it.

(ooc: ok - this was a quick one. Good job on the attacks. I need a good Cyber-K roll from Sam next. The Bridge has another access point which Sam says is an elevator. The Bridge is roughly an octagon in shape and the Alien which can be barely recognised as such is sprawled over half of the consoles. Fortunately Sam doesn't need those to work her magic. We will keep your initiative scores for now but exit combat. An Alarm has been triggered which you all can hear. It is up to Sam to see what happens next - feel free to "fill the gap" with free RPing)

Travis snarled a curse and spat on the liquefied remains of the alien. He turned and with a gesture he lifted Ronnie to her feet. He smiled and offered her a leer at the torn fabric of her shirt, "Nice look." Turning to Sam he said, "If you don't mind miss, I'd rather like to get on with the rescuing and ship blowing up... 'ing." He walked over to one of the fallen robots and began to inspect its weapon. "Vi, Doc, let's see if we can maybe strip these weapons off. Kid keep and eye out, holler if you see anything unfriendly."

"Roger that," Adrian says with steel in his voice. He moved to the center of the room and began looking around and keeping an ear out for any possible signs of attack. Kevin moves over with the rest of the group, keeping an eye out as well as his force field towards the door they entered through. With a light touch to Ronnie (making sure that she sees him first so as to not get attacked out of surprise) he lets a little of his healing energies trickle into her, healing whatever damage might have been caused by the attack that ripped her shirt.

After that, he looked at the arm with the attached weapon that Travis was looking at. "I'm not an engineer, but if I think of this as a body, maybe I could still be of some help... human bodies are marvelous machines anyways; I think I can help with something a bit cruder..."

"I'm fine," Ronnie grumbled, shrugging off his hand. "I can fix myself. Save your efforts for someone who doesn't regenerate." It was one of the few things she did well across her personas, so she was reasonably sure that she'd be fine without his help. She remembered to add, "Thanks for thinking of me."

She was more concerned about her shirt than about the healing scrapes on her stomach and breasts. Her bra wasn't in much better shape, but by using the scraps of her shirt to cover holes in the bra, she was able to get away with looking like she'd chosen to dress in chic rags rather than being forced. She also looked like she had a bad haute culture sports bra.

"Yeah, take a good look," she told Travis, smirking at him. "It's all you're getting."

"That's because your daydreams are a pathetic shadow of the real world," Ronnie snapped. Celeste fed her a line, and with a smile that approached coy, she added, "The reality would blow you away and make those daydreams look like stick-figure porn."

Are you seriously flirting in the middle of combat? Baara queried.

Yep. Ronnie's answer was simple and unabashed. I am.

Impossibly Travis's smile grew even broader. He moved close and whispered into her ear, "If you'd like to show me just what you can do ... but then if you wanted this you'd have said so, cause you know you need only ask." Travis paused and inhaled, taking in her smell then adding, "You've only ever needed to ask." You've only ever needed to ask? Where did that come from?

Is he... sniffing me? I've been fighting, I probably smell like robots, sweat and worse. Great.

He doesn't seem turned off, Celeste murmured. Try this-

No. I'm gonna be honest.

Dumb. Lena hissed. He just gave you an open invitation.

Whatever. Ronnie turned her head, eying Travis. "I'd ask, but I don't like being a notch in a bedpost, Kincaid." Travis hid a wince; she only called him that when he was in trouble. But her actions belied her words as she tilted her head in and lightly touched her forehead to his for a second. "I'll ask, when I feel like I'd be more than a one-night pleasure romp to you."

Feeling awkward and exposed, she pulled back from him and said, "Sam, what's our status?" Focusing on the mission would help - she hoped. And hopefully it would end this conversation, too. She was getting uncomfortable.

Travis was a little surprised at the honesty of her answer, surprised enough that he was left without a retort. She thinks I'm a joke, just some man whore. Travis frowned sadly and looked down at the robot trying to see if he could disconnect the weapons and keep them working.

"A little more help and a little less hormones, please" Kevin added in a voice that had more humor in it than anyone had seen since they'd found the remains of the clinic. Of course, it still wasn't jovial, but at least it showed a little progress.

Under his breath he added, "The fate of the world is at stake and all they can think about is getting laid; and I can guarantee it's been longer for me... kids..."

He simply shook his head, took another look around, continued powering his force field, and went back to looking at the weapon and arm that it was attached to.

Sam tasted blood - it was quite some time ago she had that taste in her mouth. This was important though - there was too much at stake.

She accessed the ships internal protocols and sweeped the Databanks for any useful information that would hint at what was going on. All she needed to do now was extract that information and make most useful effect of it.

The ships manifest included a list of prisoners but only counted the number of Mutants and Humans. Currently there were 232 Mutants and 1487 Humans inprisoned on several levels of the ship. The Mutants were all used to power the ship except for a small number that was too weak to be useful. They were singled out by the robots and put into cryostatic storage.

Sam's Cyberbody was aware of everything happening on board and first took command of the robots inside the ship. She left the alarm active but switched it to silent mode - she had to be careful to make subtle adjustments else the networked ships would notice too quickly that something was not right.

The robots enroute to take the bridge stopped in there tracks and slowly dissolved through the ships corridors until they reached their recharge alcoves. Once in resting position Sam simply turned them off leaving a minivirus behind to destroy their operating systems should someone except her turn them on again.

Everything happened in a matter of seconds and while the others were still trying to figure out how to make useful advantage of the alien tech Sam planned her next move.

Travis and Kevin refocused their attention on the disabled robot at their feet. The weaponsarm was attached to it in a fashion that lend the machine most flexibility yet gave it an uncanny precision. The machine had to be very strong to fire off that weapon without causing too much recoil that would make aiming impossible. There had to be something else that stabilized the barrel once fired. Yet their combined expertise couldn't find the mechanics and after a few minutes both men came to the conclusion that they would need more time and better tools to effectively analyse and maybe make use of the weapon seperated from the machine.

Sam frantically searched for the networked area and got herself a fast overview of the global situation. Las Vegas wasn't the only city under siege - almost all other larger cities world wide which had MICs were in the same situation - Sam knew she could access those ships over the network and with the right change in protocols she could cause the ships to crash. After that she'd have to try to get to the source of the network which she already sensed wasn't on earth.

(ooc: Ok folks - I'm sorry for you guys (Kevin and Travis) but the alien tech is a bit too advanced to let you guys take advantage of it right now. If you get hold of one of them and a good laboratory you may reverse engineer it - but that'll take time. Sam - I need a series (5) of Cyber-K (control) rolls from you to get an impression of how fast and how good you will be able to disable "all" ships on the global scale. Just hope you don't botch ;))

Kevin looked sorrowfully at Travis. "I just can't seem to make heads or tails of it. I should be able to tell how it works, but I just can't right now. Would the two of you (Adrian and Travis) be able to chop this down to a manageable size that we could take with us and study? If not, let's just leave it... sad to say there are plenty more where this came from." And with that, he stood up and went over to Sam.

He still didn't really trust her, though... no, even if they got out of this alive there's still the chance that she'd alerted all the other ships in the area, maybe even the world of their presence and plans. There'd been an ambush waiting for them when they got aboard this ship, it'd probably be bigger next time, since Sam now had a better impression of how well they worked together.

As Kevin approached, and moved around so that he could see her face, he noticed the blood trickling down her nose... the virus! Either she was trying really hard to help them, or she was trying even harder to make it look like she was. He may never know, but ages ago he'd taken an oath to help and not to harm... unfortunately his oath didn't make a distinction between tyrants and heroes. So, Kevin did the most he could at the moment, he ever so slightly put a hand on Sam's shoulder and let his healing energies flow into her.

And, while Sam seemed to brighten a bit, Kevin was looking more and more his age; run down and worn out. He didn't know how much longer he could continue, but he knew it wasn't indefinitely.

"Tell me what you want ripped and I'll wrip it," Adrian said, standing close to Sam. "Not a problem."

He had been somewhat embarrassed by Travis' and Ronnie's flirting, but could hardly blame them. Now, with death so close, you wanted to think about anything else, and what was more pleasent than hooking up with someone you cared about. If only Juno had been here, could he have been so bold and witty. She wasn't here and was probably out there putting her life at incredible risk.

Sam bled and the Doc came over and helped her. The 'Save the World' mission was still on track. Now if the Doc would just relate to him what he wanted done, he could wrap his mind around something besides waiting.

Sam’s consciousness flooded the alien’s network changing it’s programming wherever she roamed. The vast space of cyberspace expanded in her minds eye and she saw the connections established within the network. Each drop ship was connected globally with one mothership orbiting just above Berlin. All networked dropships had a direct connection to the mothership which in return was connected to a third “base” which was located on the moon. Sam concentrated to reach out for those lines and saw that even the moon hub was just part of another – far larger network which spanned across the Sun’s system – and if she looked closer she saw that it went even beyond the known realm of space.

Sam gasped for a moment feeling almost lost in it’s gargantuan dimension before she refocused on the task. She had to somehow cut off the network at one critical point. One bottleneck was the mothership and the next was the moon. Bracing herself for heavy defences she decided to assault the mothership directly. A collapse of the network at that point should have immediate effect on all dropships.

For the strike team nothing serious was going on. Sam was bleeding out of every orifice which Kevin tended to using both his medical knowledge as well as his mutant power to contain. Whatever was going on – either Sam was having a hard time or just faking it. Uncertainty took hold of their hearts and with it impatience spread. Every sound could be another attack – another approach to the bridge but nothing happened. Only seconds passed though.

Sam’s virtual body cut through the alien’s defence mechanism like a hot knife through butter. It was their fault to tailor their system to her abilities – now that she was aware of herself it was payback time. The programming changed to her whim and with it grew her control over the network. Like a homing missile she lunged her body at the mothership aiming directly for it’s core. The defences here were stronger but no match for her superior mutant ability which had no equal.

At its core Sam ripped off all connecting lines and sent a whitenoise signal back to all receiving ends – the effect was instantly – all machines ceased to function collapsing because of the conflicting feedback caused by Sam’s virtual assault.

The strike team felt a sudden ‘shift’ as the dropship lost height and descended causing their stomachs to turn because of the drop in gravity. A feint smile drew over Sam’s face as she reached her goal – the network was destroyed on the global level and the dropships all lost control over their robots. The communications blockade was lifted as the network collapsed and Sam sighed relieved that her mission was successful. She released her connection to the network that was now destroyed and collapsed unconsciously into Kevin’s arms. The dropship was sinking steadily and picking up speed as all stabilizing controls failed to function.

Without Sam things got just a bit more complicated since the ships security system still overrode any controls – Travis didn’t hesitate and made a quick decision making clear that there was sense arguing it. He stormed forward pushing his powers to their limits as telekinetic forces ripped the doors apart as if they were made of papermache. Ronnie and Adrian remained close behind while Kevin still secured their backs. Sam was resting safely in Adrian’s arms as the kid tried to keep her secure in her unconscious state.

Back at the prisonbay Travis looked around trying to get an impression of how the whole thing was built. He had no idea how large it would be and the others certainly couldn’t provide him with more details. “just hold on to something.”, he said not waiting for their replies. Metal protested as his mind forced it apart using his mutant powers. Protest turned into squeals and then the floor moved. Travis was sweating profoundly as he gestured with his arms focusing on ‘cutting’ themselves and the prisonbay out of the falling ship. With a deafening noise of thunder and metal being twisted by sheer force the prisonbay slowly removed itself from the ships hull. The large dropship continued it’s descent to death as it crashed into the remaining buildings of the CIC below while the large section of the prisonbay remained floating in midair carried by invisible hands. Travis relaxed a bit after the most strain on him was lifted and the ripped off section made it’s own slow descent back to earth.

Behind them the dropship caused a huge cloud of debris and dust followed by several explosions but the mutants barely noticed that. Travis had pushed himself too far and lost consciousness on the last few meters of their descent causing them to half crash into another building. The team got hurled off the small section of gangway they stood on getting sprawled over the street below them like insects.
