Character History: Hywel Gwynn Jones

Born in 1968 in a small rural/mountain town (Bethesda) in North Wales, his only language until the age of 6 was Welsh at which point he started learning English from an Arabic neighbour (at picking up arabic as well as he went along).

At the age of ~11 his family moved to Kent, where he got into the local Grammar school. While there he took up roleplaying at 13 and Karate at 15. Within the school he was best at the langauges the school offered (French, German and Latin) and the sciences, but he did also manage to get into the school hockey team (field not ice, being the UK).

He went to University straight from school, in this case the University College of North Wales at Bangor, the nearest major town/city to his birth town of Bethesda, where he studied Physics and Engineering. Apart from his studies he split his time between the wargames/roleplaying club, a selection of various martial arts styles (since the one he studied whilst at school was unavailable here) including weapon styles such as fencing, kendo, escrima, and of course the bar! Gwyn graduated with a respectable 2:1 Hons and went to work for a local enginering company for the next 9 months.

His next major change came when his application to AWRE in Berkshire was accepted, this is where the UK's nuclear deterrant is designed and built. Gwyn's job initially was an pure engineering suport one of minimal classification, but once his security clearance came through he was re-assigned to the so called 'Button' team. This was a dedicated team on call 24 hours a day for the purposes of identifying and neutralising suspected nuclear devices of one type or another. As well as regular exercises and joint exercises with the military, a fair amount of research to improve techniques was involved. When he could get the chance between these work commitment he has maintained links with his roleplaying and martial arts associates back at Bangor as well as continuing those hobbies near where he works. After being with the team for several years he was assigned to teach a special forces unit (Royal Marines specialist group) the key parts of nuclear bomb disposal, and so spent the best part of a year with them at the Royal Military College. Given his skills and his langauge ability in Arabic he was assigned to go to Iraq in the summer as part of the investigation team. Prior to that he was sent to take the All Arms Commando Course. This is the course that other members of the armed forces can take to try to bring themselves upto Commando level, and does entitle them to wear the Green beret of the Royal Marine Commandos.

It was during this course that he was spotted by a member of the NID that was involved with the 'Enhancement' program and was soon seconded to 'US engineering liaison' and taken into the program. He had little time to assimilate his new powers before it was discovered and he was taken into the SGC program, something he is much more comfortable with than the direction the 'Enhancement' program seemed to be taking.

Personality

Given his hobbies of roleplaying, martial arts and history together with his professional skills in science/engineering he is both a creative/thoughtful person, but one that is willing to stand up for himself if it comes to a fight. Gwynn is not adverse to passing the time between assignments making up worst case scenarios and trying to work out a variety of methods of overcoming them. Given the nature of his new work he has started to become more focussed on his past dabbling with history, moving from the roman/medieval period that he previously concentrated on to the ancient civilisations that are more relevant now.

Although he has gotten used to most aspects of his powers there are some that he positively revels in, when given the opportunity. Unfortunately, those opportunities tend to be quite far apart while living in/near the SGC.
