The Red Man
Quote: “I wanted to leave this crap behind, even though it used to be the only thing I was good at. Now I got no choice: I'm made for it." Name & Rank: Declan Perault, Sgt. (ret'd) Formerly U.S Rangers.Age: 30Physical Age: 24 (Thanks to Kyria!) D.O.B: 08 OCT 1974Height: 6'1"Weight: 260lbs Image: Six feet of lean, hard muscle topped by shaggy dark brown hair, his most noticeable feature is his eyes: shining metallic silver with black pupils in the centers. No matter how friendly his face or tone of voice might be, when he focuses those eyes on a person they often cannot help but feel the urge to shiver. The gaze assesses, as though unconsciously figuring out how to put the person he's looking at in a coffin. His posture is typically closed body language: head low, shoulders hunched, reluctant to make eye contact or even look at the person he's speaking to.Background: Declan grew up in the Montana wilderness, raised by his uncle and taught to hunt, shoot and forage in the woods and mountains that were the world for him. When he was twelve, however, the old man died of pneumonia and left Declan to the tender mercies of the foster system. It was not a success. At the age of 16, going nowhere, having nothing, and lacking any direction to his life he joined the Army. He found a direction there, a focus. He found the hard life of a light infantryman to his tastes, and re-enlisted as soon as his first term was up, volunteering for Ranger School and passing with flying colours. Exemplary performance in the Persian Gulf and Somalia led to a promotion to Sergeant, then further service and promotion to First Sergeant came readily. Then came Afghanistan.Declan came apart after a harrowing assault on a Taliban fortress in the mountains of the Middle East. His platoon were cut off from support and surrounded by hostiles: the commanding officer was killed together with the radio operator by a lucky mortar strike. Declan's unit was cut to pieces, his friends of close to ten years in some cases gone over the course of a twenty-minute firefight. Grievously wounded, out of ammunition, surrounded by enemy dead and covered in blood that belonged to both himself and others, Declan was the only survivor. With his company commander's recommendation, he received an honorable discharge and went on his way.The war followed him home. The V.A. in Los Angeles, knowing his history, set him up with a job as a trash man and a shrink. But Declan's paranoia grew worse and worse: he was convinced that sinister agencies were hounding him through the city streets. Finally, when dark vans blocked him in one dark morning on the way to work, Declan knew he had been right. They had come for him.The organisation did something to the veteran. Used some sort of weird tech on him that set his mind and body to fizzing like an alka-seltzer. He could almost see things before they happened: predict people's next moves with uncanny clarity. He was faster and stronger, and damned if shit didn't just heal right up. But the price was high: everywhere was a combat zone, every interaction was assessed in terms of win or lose. He couldn't turn it off. The NID were going to write him off as a partial-failure and try again with a more mentally stable subject. Declan would have gone into the incinerator. Then the Army came into his life again. They shut down the illicit project and rescued him. But there was no way they could set him free into normal society. He'd probably end up killing some poor schlub just for bumping into him on the street. So he was 're-enlisted' for some new project that they said he could make a difference on. Lacking options, he signed on the dotted line. Heck, it wasn't like anyone out there would miss him.Personality Profile / Quirks: Though a good soldier in that he follows orders and chain of command, in the absence of a focus or orders from a higher authority he tends to turn in on himself. Perault shows a high level of social restraint and 'arms-length' behaviour common in those who struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress, in addition to all the classic symptoms of depression. As yet the full extent of the NID enhancement procedure on his mental stability is untested. Extreme caution should be exercised in handling Sgt. Perault in field situations. The psychologist was overruled regarding her recommendation for Sgt. Perault's sidelining from the SG team, but recommends initial exercises take place under controlled conditions.Enhancement Profile: [Restricted: Retrieved from NID files.] Project's goal was to enhance Subject Perault to be the ultimate soldier and assassin. We succeeded admirably. In addition to post-human levels of physical and sensory capability he has been programmed, imbued might be a better word, with extensive and instinctive knowledge of (as near as we can tell) over one hundred varieties of unarmed and weapon-based martial arts, some of which are unknown on Earth. These seem to be hardwired into his subconscious mind and physical reflexes to be brought forth at will. His conscious mind is where the most exciting changes have taken place. By some means which the scientific team is still analysing, his rather average intellect has been augmented to theoretically out-think then out-fight any foe. Perault's mind can analyse a situation or enemy, plan multiple tactical engagement profiles, and execute the one with the highest ratio of success in a matter of seconds. Current theory is that the same analytical process can be applied to long-term strategic plans as well as smaller-scale tactical and operational profiling. In addition, the PTSD that made Sgt. Perault unsuitable for combat seems to have been mitigated through selective augmentation of his fighting instincts. These activate when he feels threatened and his heart rate rises above a certain point. In short: whenever a dangerous situation threatens Perault has no innate 'freeze' reflex and thus also no hesitation in acting.
