Mutants & Masterminds: The Indigo Children - Chapter 1: Test 01

Ramani moved off to the side, crouching low the long coat dragged in the rain soaked street. It flapped about her, open to allow for unrestricted movement. Inside the ruined store the Porcubear turned toward the street and stepped forward moving into the light cast by the street lamp. It was bigger, easily the size of a Kodiak bear, very likely close to two thousand pounds of muscle and spines. It advanced, growling with displeasure, in a hunched over posture its massive paws out before it. Bolos at the ready Ozzie prepared for the worst. Wally, caught completely off guard, found himself slow to react even as Cole snapped into action with lightening reflexes. Behind them Penny and Randy tended to the fallen cop but both looked up as the Porcubear growled and moved out to greet the others. With an audible gulp Randy swallowed hard, "Oh man, I just wanted some pizza ..."

As the stun blast hit Rodney a bang echoed through the rain. Below in the street something loud had detonated, loud enough to be heard above the ever present rain drumming down on the roof and the sheet metal housings of the heating and cooling systems. Rodney noted it distantly as his body spasmed out of control and the cyborg cocked its head toward the sound as well.

Rodney twitched and jerked and fell into the wetness on the roof. The cyborg walked over and stood over him as its arm folded back over the end of the cannon. Its footsteps thudded on the roof sending vibration through the structure that Rodney could distantly feel in his disoriented body. From a compartment in one of its legs it withdrew two lengths of plastic zip-ties and set to work binding Rodney's legs and arms. As it worked Rodney recovered from the stun weapon's effect, but allowed the cyborg to bind him knowing that he could make it easier for himself to escape later. "Unknown subject subdued and detained. Pick up beacon placed." It spoke as it spiked a small object into the roof. A small light on the item immediately started blinking. "Proceeding to primary objective, recapture of Subject One-seven." The cyborg stood and without a further glance at Rodney made its way to the roof access door. A single impact from its mechanical frame burst the door inward and shattered the door's lock. It pulled the deformed door outward and disappeared down into the building.

Cole's claws slide out as he flexes his fingers. He knew Ramani was going to try to flank it, and Ideally he would draw it's attention, for her and the others. He slipped his claws under the nearby manhole cover and hefted the disc up and then at the porcubear. "Hey! UGly! Over here you Reject from Frankenstein's zoo!" The Manhole cover went flying past it, crashing back into the storefront.

He did his best to Get its attention, preparing to leap away or just flat out run if it gave chase.

Ramani moved sideways trying to get a flanking angle at the creature. She was hunched forward, ready to jump into action but hesitated. The others could still try to get a better opening at the porcubear. Once she reached a position that flanked the creature and gave the others a clear sight at it she rose to her full height and bared her fangs as she growled at the creature in an attempt to intimidate it.

The creature snarled back in reply apparently un-intimidated by Ramani. Given its massive size and apparently hostile disposition, one could hardly blame it.

Penny continued to secure the officer carefully to the shelf, her heart pounding in her chest as she worked. Ramani's growl - sounding more like a roar to the terrified teen - made her jump and yelp a little. While Randy managed to not make any girly noises, he looked just as startled as her. The Porcu-bear's answering snarl made them flinch again, and spurred them to keep working.

Ozzie was a bit taken aback from the two mutants growling at each other. Great, now it's really pissed off. Can't make things too easy can we? Only good thing is that it might be a bit distracted now. Time to make my move.

"Aww, I can't just shoot 'em," Wally complains. "He's so cute! Besides, we both fell in battle together. Brothers in arms. Everyone clear out from around him!"

Wally reaches up to his tactical vest and yanks a smooth little cylinder off. It makes a little high-pitched whine as he flings it at the porcubear. He then covers his ears and turns away.

"Fire in the hole!"

The exploding Flashbang made Penny jump and squeak again, while Randy hid his fear by laughing at her. "You sounded like a squeak toy," he told her, grinning widely.

"Shut up," she growled, grabbing the edge of the shelf and catching his eyes over the edge of her glasses. "Lift on three, carefully - one... two... three." She and Randy lifted the same time and began to move the cop further away from the fighting. Penny groaned as her hands started to hurt from the shelf cutting in; she was glad to set the officer down under an awning, well away from the fight.

"Uh, right, sorry 'bout that," he calls as he slaps the pockets in his vest, looking for something. "Thought he might be a bit big for this, but you never know...ah!"

He yanks a small, boxy pistol from a pouch and aims it at the porcubear.

"Sorry, mate. Hope this doesn't hurt too much."

There's a coughing noise when he pulls the trigger, and a dart sails out...connected by a long, thin wire to the pistol.

There's a flurry of sparks when the dart hits, and a pulsing, repeating buzz as it sends powerful charges of electricity into the beast, trying to interrupt its nerves to its muscles.

Where in the world is Rodney? Penny wondered, hunched protectively next to the cop. He'd been here she knew, so where was he now? She wondered if he'd gotten in trouble, but he seemed capable to her. Nervously, she glanced up into the dark sky, trying to see if she could spot any sign of the bat.

Randy started looking into the Cruiser's interior. There was the radio dangling where the second cop had dropped it but Randy decided that the shit was plenty deep enough as it was. The lights and siren were already going. He popped the trunk, hopefully something back there would help.

Meanwhile Penny looks around the area for Rodney. There is no sign of him anywhere but as she looks around she does spot a black truck at the opposite end of the block. It was barely noticeable with its lights out and its matte paint but it sure did remind her of the van from the park and the truck Wally and Ozzie described.
