“The legacies of the Vietnam War live on over three decades after its end. Families were torn apart by violence and ideology; the line between victor and victim became blurred. Divided two decades ago during the Fall of Saigon, brothers Duong and Thanh Nguyen married, had children, and went on to live their lives – on opposite sides of the ocean.

Duong fled the advancing Viet Cong with his wife Mai, immigrating to America and starting a successful chain of Asian food markets. Ten years after the war’s end, they had a son they named Dac Kien, meaning ‘acquired view or knowledge’, which proved to be accurate when he graduated college recently with a Masters of Engineering at the young age of twenty-three.

Thanh, a fervent Communist, remained in the newly renamed Ho Chi Minh City and married Linh, who had fought the Americans and their South Vietnamese allies. They became sellers of fruit, vegetables and flowers, a trade which kept them fed and clothed, if not prosperous The same year of their nephew’s birth, they had a daughter named Kim, whose name meant ‘golden’ – like her cousin, it was an appropriate name, for she became known in the markets of Saigon for a lovely face and persuasive tongue.

Dac Kien traveled to Vietnam to search for his uncle’s family. He got more of a surprise than he expected…

“It’s no secret that during the filming of this documentary in October, Kim Nguyen erupted with powers over plant life and virtual immunity to sensory difficulties because of the fern Dac Kien gave her, the one she was allergic to. Appropriate footage was passed onto the Project, but so far as we know, Kim has not taken up the offer to train at a Rashoud facility. We can assure you that the headaches have gone and that she is in good health. She is the darling of the flower and produce markets, and much smarter than Dac Kien reckoned – or at least a better haggler."

“Since her eruption, Kim’s strength and health problems have vanished. Furthermore, her basic attributes have reached baseline peaks at least, and she has become even more beautiful and persuasive. In the days that followed, she became distracted by the plants that ‘talked’ to her, and is experiencing difficulty with cutting flowers or leaves from still-living plants. Handling ‘dead’ ones, as she calls them, is no problem to her; so sympathetic admirers have taken to removing the fruit, vegetables and flowers that are still attached to the plant for her. I don’t know, personally, if this problem is still continuing.”

Appearance

“Kim Nguyen wears the ao dai, a long gown slit at both sides over loose trousers, and often a woven grass hat in the Chinese style to protect her delicate skin as she works in the fields. Her features are pleasant to the eye and the obvious fragility of her build enhances the delicacy of her appearance. She admits to using beauty products, spending all of her meagre allowance on them in the hopes of one day finding a wealthy husband.”

"Kim Nguyen, the Vietnamese beauty with a green thumb, has officially joined CARE as a spokeswoman, nova consultant and aid worker. Though details are yet to be confirmed, it is likely that the 'plant-whisperer' from Gaal and Najarian's Vietnam: Divergences documentary, famous for literally erupting between takes while it was being filmed, will have to undergo specialised training in agricultural and horticultural sciences before fully joining CARE in their scientific efforts.

Public statements of support came from Vietnam's government and even the famed Gaal and Najarian themselves. In her only public statement, Kim (whose die-hard fans raised the money to register the name 'Frond' with Lexington Apellate) credited the American nova LiberTeen with the advice which led to her decision. Apparently the two are acquainted with each other over the OpNet, though no confirmation of anything more has been received from either party."
