History
Galiana was born to a muladi family in Sicily. They were ‘Islamized’ Christians whose conversion to Islam under the Caliphate didn’t alleviate their status as slaves, taken as spoils of war. The family continued to be slaves after the Caliphate was removed, because they were captured by the invading Christians who took them as Moorish spoils of war.

Yet running through the family’s bloodline was a long-forgotten gene, from a time when her family worshipped the Maiden, Mother and Crone, and howled to the moon with their wolf brethren. Hidden, this gene was passed down through the ages until Galiana’s mother met and married Galiana’s father, who was a distant cousin. The dormant genes were finally combined. Galiana was the child lucky enough to get both genes.

Ironically, she was the one who didn’t like wolves growing up; she was bitten by a caged one. It had been brought as a gift to her noble master in Sicily; the six-year-old girl wandered to the cage, fascinated by the ‘big doggie’. The terrified animal lashed out, biting her in the face. The only reason she survived was because it couldn’t bite her well with the bars between them. It did tear up her cheek and blind her in her right eye, turning it blue from its normal brown. To this day, all she can see in that eye is light and darkness.

Galiana’s life was good, for a slave; she had training as a weaver, food and shelter, and her family around. In particular, she was particularly close to her two younger sisters, Fatima and Aliyah. They alone never made her feel bad about her scarring or her eye. The three were sometimes called ‘The Peas’ because of how close they were.

The disfigurement to her face made it hard to find men willing to marry her. When she was fifteen, an old dye crofter who was also a slave in her master’s house finally offered to marry her, but before arrangements were finalized, her master sold her sisters to a Roman nobleman. Galiana was filled with rage like never before, and Changed at that moment. Snarling and half-mad, the werewolf dashed out into the night. She didn’t really know where Rome was, but she knew that it was in Italy, and that Italy was only a long swim across the Strait of Messina.

The enormity of the task before her was unimportant; she had to find her sisters. Along the way, she stumbled onto another set of sisters, the Black Furies. They understood and approved of her task, and they gave her further training to help her, such as fighting skills and Gifts and Rites. The other Ragabash Black Furies taught her more: how to kill without being seen and how to sneak around in her human and wolf forms. More importantly, they told her how to find Rome.
