The afternoon passed slowly. A languid afternoon spent stuffing themselves silly with mommy's cooking, sitting and counting clouds, playing tag, and flying kites.

They sat, lying in the grass, chatting about the silliest of things. Then she changed the subject.

"How come Mommy doesn't like to talk about Granpa Eddie?"

The question catches him off guard. It had been awhile.

"Well, she misses him sweetheart."

"...But why? That don't make sense."

"Actually, yes it does sweetie."

"How come? What happened?"

"Well, you know what they teach you in class about the Earth War?"

"Yah. Earth people hated novas and were mean and awful and kicked them out."

"Well...not exactly. You'll learn more about it when you get older."

"What's that got to do with Granpa Eddie?"

"Well, Granpa Eddie was in the Earth War."

"Really?!?! Wow. But that was tons and tons ago!"

"Well, Granpa Eddie and Granma Grove didn't have mommy until they were kinda old."

"Oh. And you and mommy didn't have me until you were a hunnert."

"Yes. Well, when Granpa Eddie was a lot younger he had a really really bad life."

"How bad?"

"Bad enough that I can't tell you until you get older, okay?"

"Hmmmm. Okay."

"Well, because he had such a bad life he did some bad things when he erupted."

"Bad like Wycroft?"

"No sweetie. Not that bad. But bad. But just because his mind wasn't okay. He was sick."

"Ohhhh."

"Well, then some bad people found Grandpa Eddie and they tricked him into doing more bad things. They used mind powers on him."

"Like yours?"

"No, different. But they made him to continue to do bad things. Then the Nova that did that was killed and they couldn't trick Granpa Eddie anymore. He ran away and found Gramma Grove."

"Yay!"

"Gramma Grove had some friends who helped Granpa Eddie. They fixed his head and made him all better. He was so happy and wanted to thank them so much that he helped them when the EarthWar happened."

"Thats when there were bombs! And missles! And zapping! Pshooy! Phooy!! Boooom!!"

"Heheheh. Yes sweetie. And Grampa Eddie used his metamorph abilities a LOT during the war. He really really pushed them and he got tougher and tougher."

"..."

"What's wrong sweetie?"

"... sniff"

"Why are you crying?"

"Did, did Grampa Eddie get all tainty?"

"Oh, oh no darling. No he didn't. But he and Gramma Grove did get very powerful. And sometimes when Novas get really, really powerful its...hard for them to keep doing the same thing."

"Oh. But Gramma Grove does the same thing. She helps peoples heads."

"Well, yes, but Gramma Grove's power brings her closer to people. Grampa Eddie's well they made it hard for him to stay in one place, to stay being one thing."

"Cuz he wanted to change and change and change?"

"Yes sweetie. Eventually after a long long time he just needed to be different things. He couldn't stay in one place anymore. So he said goodbye to him."

"And came here?"

"Yes, that's when he came here. So we come and visit him. But it's hard for Gramma Grove. She remembers him the way he used to be, and it's hard for her to talk to him now, even mindtalk. He's very different."

"Oh. That's sad."

"Yes sweetie. But it's okay. It's time to go now. So say goodbye."

The little girl got up and brushed off her dirty knees. With a giggle and a rush she ran out into the open field and spun around, "Goodbye Grampa Eddie! WE LOVE YOU!!!"

A bunny came hopping up to her and she reached down to hug it. She petted a snake that slithered out of a hole and she laughed as a swarm of bees buzzed around her and tickled her.

And when they left, walking through the portal home, an entire world sighed with contentment.
