Aberrant: Children of Quantum Fire - Character - Brute

The girl born Eden Klitzkow but christened ‘Brute’ by her own father was never blessed with a peaceful life.

Her parents were Nova socialites, her mother an actress, her father a writer and philosopher. One was a living people magnet, able to bend wills and emotions as she wished, the other a powerful telepath. However they both suffered the frustrations of those who wish to be the best and never are, always seeing another nova better, brighter than them.

In their daughter, the Klitzkows sought to encapsulate their dreams, and be able to take credit to birthing the brightest star in all the heavens. However, both were brilliant, and both had noticed the slight pattern developing between nova parents and sudden, inexplicable and fatal accidents. They decided to make a public show of retiring from the social life together, ostensibly to pursue a happy, quiet life as mine and wife. They disappeared off the radar, and put together a quiet retreat in a swath of Texas woodland. They made sure to give it time for relationships to develop, for the husband to establish that he was the one who went out to the nearby town for supplies and news, that the wife preferred to stay at home. Plenty of time for whoever might be interested to investigate, get bored, and leave them alone.

Then they saw about having a baby. They wanted a son but got a daughter. Eden was a beautiful child, sure enough… but not that beautiful. The mind was what they cared about most, though, they agreed on that.

Yet as Eden began to grow, she seemed… slow. Perhaps not truly slow, but not Nova bright. To their parents she seemed almost Neanderthal, unable to understand something as simple as advanced physics or trigonometry, and positively confused by advanced philosophical concepts.

Her proficiency proved obvious soon enough, though. In a tantrum over being forced to learn maths, Eden expressed her freezing powers for the first time. The cold was such that it blistered her mother’s skin, shattered windows, buckled the walls of their house.

Arthur Klitzkow took Eden out into the woods and beat her. Not physically, though he tried to and discovered his daughter was far stronger than him. In her attempt to defend herself she knocked him across the clearing and broke one of his ribs. It was then she first revealed her true power, growing, even at the young age of five, almost to tower over the trees. He unleashed his mind on her.

Eden cracked and shrank, and Arthur brought her to heel with images of raw nightmare and horror that scarred her.

This began the downward spiral. Both parents were shaken by the experience. They talked of giving her up, neither realizing that her perceptions were enhanced and she could hear every word.

Eden kept trying at her studies, but she found the words hard to read and her lessons hard to remember. When left to her own devices she played, showing inhuman dexterity and relentless energy, far more than her parents, neither of whom were fond of playing with her for long and certainly not in the ways she liked.

As she reached ten, Brute became more and more withdrawn. The arguments between her parents grew more intense. They started fighting over her. Arthur, hearing her complain that the words were hard to read, said she might even be dyslexic, triggering a violent reaction from her mother and a blazing row.

Both parents began to put the full force of their abilities to work on Brute, trying to mould her towards them, to force her to grow the way they wanted. They could not threaten her physically, but she when her mother grew angry Brute shrieked to see it, and retreated sobbing into the corners, and when her father reached into her mind and twisted, she curled up drooling, unable to resist, unable to do anything but try feebly to remember what was real and what wasn’t.

Over time she lost track of what was real and what was not, as Arthur became her chief abuser, and her mother acclimatized more to the daughter she had instead of the one she wanted. At some point, her mother disappeared completely.

Eden has no memory that she can trust of those two, or three years. Her memories are fragmentary, some ripped out, some complete but consisting of pure nightmare and dream. She withdrew completely into herself, feeling nothing but sorrow for failing her parents so much. She forgot the name she had been given at birth. All her father ever called her was Brute, and whatever memories she had of being called another name became vague, distant, and uncertain.

The only thing she had – even though she did not know where it came from – was a teddy bear. The only friend she ever remembered having.

Dimly, though, she felt the need to flee. Some part of her knew she would crack completely if she waited much longer. Even though she knew nothing of the world beyond the wood, she had to go.

One day, her father was not there. Brute fled, taking her teddy with her.

She found her way to a road, and after holding up a passing truck, the young nova forced him to take her to the nearest town despite his protestations. As they left the wood, she saw that it was less than a tenth the size she remembered. It was tiny, not the forest she remembered. When she asked, she was told the trees were cut down years ago.

Though she knew her father watched her go, he made no attempt to drag her back, not then.

In the nearby town, Brute thanked the man for helping her, and fled.

Brute avoided contact with everyone as she fled Texas. She popped up now and again in bars or clubs, always seeking help to move onward but never knowing where she was going. All that drove her was the knowledge that her father was behind her, her mother was somewhere out there, and she had to escape them both.

She collided with Project Proteus on one of many state borders that she crossed without thinking. They attacked without warning, not to kill but to capture her.

Brute grew. At her full size – over 150 feet tall – she scattered the team, destroyed their equipment, and sent them fleeing, most likely killing one when she snatched him up and hurled him at the horizon.

Confused, afraid, mostly naked, Brute got back to running, just her a backpack and her teddy, and never stopped.

At the coastline she merged with the sea and escaped the US, and her father. But not Proteus.

Brute disappeared off the radar for more than seven months. She next appeared on the N! Report:

“This is Natalie Friedrich, reporting for N!, your one-stop shop for all things Nova. I am here today in the very non-sunny Himalayas. Behind me you can see the slopes of Mount Everest, but what you can’t see is the reason why I’m here. To my right is climber Adam Parsons from Nebraska, who just a few hours ago witnessed something amazing.”

*camera cuts to a bearded man in full climbing gear with a thick New York accent*

“I was climbing up the slope with my crew an’ we looked up, the way you do, and Emma, she’s our guide, she says that she sees something. So we look up and by god as my witness, there’s this… this woman climbing up past us. Only she was huge. I mean, like, she went over us and we were in darkness. And she goes climbing up and up and getting bigger as she goes, and we just stopped and watched. And, uh, well she got to the top and just stood there with her hands on her hips. Then she raised her arms and shouted ‘I’m on top of the world!’ Damnedest thing I ever saw. No idea who she was.”

*camera cuts to a bit of shaky camera footage that shows the latter part of what he just said, with significant blurring, then cuts back to Natalie*

“Now, as it stands we have no idea who this Nova is. It was first thought it might be the Team Tomorrow Nova Giantess, but we have confirmation from Utopia spokespeople that this is not her, and a thorough check of appellate-lexington seems to suggest that this Nova is a complete unknown. If anyone has any information, N! would like to talk to you. This is Natalie Friedrich, for N!, reporting.”

Brute had naturally begun to gravitate toward colder climates, but she could not resist the urge to do as she did. Though she noticed the climbers on the way past them, for she could sense the heat of their bodies and feel their eyes upon her even from afar, she ignored them and had her moment.

Less than a month later she was sighted in Thailand, fleeing an accident that was probably meant to kill her, and a further battle with Proteus.

Following this incident, Brute fled to the Antarctic, and has been there since, alone with her teddy, hiding from the world that seems to want to kill her for reasons she cannot fathom.

Hooks: 1. Arthur Klitzkow returns to reclaim his daughter.

2. Proteus are not seeking to kill but capture Brute, for purposes unknown
