Background

Oneca Bahaar was born to Tricia and Rahim Bahaar, wealthy inheritors and investors in Los Angeles. She was their first child as was followed five years later by another daughter, Saja. When Oneca was 9 and Saja 4, a True Fae lured the younger girl out of the house one night while their parents were asleep. Oneca woke up and followed Saja out, trying to convince her that the apparition wasn't there mother. The Fae seemed amused by both Oneca's ability to see through the illusion and her useless attempts to persuade Saja of the truth. Their home sat on a large estate with wooded areas, and to placate the upset and increasingly more angry 9 year old, the Fae created a fetch for Saja from the fallen limbs, flowers, and vines of the woods. Oneca was bound in an unwilling pact with the fetch and the Fae: she would always be able to perceive the Fae, Changelings, and Hedge creatures, and in return the fetch will have her heart - literally and figuratively. The Fae give the fetch Oneca's heart and replaced it with fist sized ruby to seal the pact. Saja was taken by the Fae and Oneca and the fetch were returned by Faerie magic to their room and to sleep.

The next morning fire trucks arrived at the home, as a fire had started in the girls' bedroom. Oneca was unharmed (and the doctors detected nothing wrong with the ruby heart), but 'Saja' was badly burnt and spent the next few months in a burn ward. Oneca's attempts to tell her parents of what happened and what 'Saja' actually was now were taken as delusions and guilt over not being hurt by the fire. A child psychologist was called in, who quietly informed Oneca's parents that she might have been responsible for setting the fire and should be carefully watched, just in case therapy was needed. Oneca's insistance that Saja was a wooden monster did earn her weekly therapy sessions and separate rooms for the girls - on different sides of the house. After the first year, Oneca knew there wasn't any way she could convince her parents or the adults of the truth, and 'Saja' kept telling her that she was hurting her feelings and didn't she love her sister?

At the age of twelve Oneca learned that she had probably caused the fire in her room. She and Saja were at a Girl Scout summer camp, a three night affair that had let Saja come along because of Oneca. Some of the older girls picked on the slightly odd seven year old, teasing her about being afraid of the bugs and dark. Oneca tried to step in and stop them and the four bullies decided that Oneca was both a better and sturdier target. She fought back, but the bullies were several years older than her and there were simply too many of them. They pushed, scratched, and hit and pulled on her hair when she fell down. Something in Oneca snapped at the unfairness of situation and one of the girls screamed. Her hair was on fire. Twigs and branches in the area started combusting as well, making attempts of starting a forest fire. The bullies fled, and Saja simply held Oneca down with inhuman strength and put a hand over her mouth and nose until she passed out. When Oneca woke up she was in the hospital near her home. The bullies hadn't said anything about the fires (blaming the singed hair on the campfire the night before), and Saja had simply told the Scout Leader that her sister had fallen badly and passed out.

Over the next few years Oneca would sneak off to the more deserted ares of the estate to test her fire-making abilities. She saved her allowance and bought books on everything from psuedo-scientific studies of paranormal activities to the 'So You Want To Be a Witch' primer. Mostly it was bunk, but there was enough helpful information for her to learn a rudimentary control over her pyrokenesis. She knew her parents wouldn't understand these powers of her, but she just couldn't bring herself to keep her sister away when Saja followed after her to find out what she was doing off all by her lonesome. She knew Saja was a monster; she loved her because she had no choice.

Although through her parents money and influence Oneca had her choice of just about any college in the US and most of them in Europe to attend, Saja was only 13 when Oneca graduated high school and Oneca knew she wouldn't be able to be far away from the tree-teen for long. She decided on UCLA, and following a trend of periodic drug use and clubbing from her junior and senior days, slid into mediocre collegium with little difficulty. She floated from major to major for the first several years; her parents worried were about her, but willing to pay for a five or six year stint in college with little prompting.
Oneca is 23 now and Saja is a budding 18 year old that just finished her own freshman year at UCLA after having graduated early from high school. Saja's drive to become a pediatrician horrifies Oneca, but her parents hope some of Saja's study ethic will rub off on the errant daughter and provide something in the way of direction. Saja attempted to evict Oneca's roomate, August, when she moved in last year using the argument that the house their parents were paying for had only two bedrooms. Oneca managed to plead with her parents to simply pick up a larger house to accommodate Saja as well. It took a promise to finally settle on a major this year and see it through to graduation to get it, but worse than living with Saja again would be living alone with her. Oneca's also pretty sure that Saja was behind an attempt to frame Peter Erastes, the head of the Dark Flame Chantry and another of Oneca's good friends, a few years before earlier, but she has no proof beyond her own instincts and Saja's hatred of any attempt of Oneca's at emotional happiness or independence.
Oneca's parents got an unexpected call over the summer from Tricia's brother asking if they could take in his daughter Aradia for a while. The circus that Aradia had worked at and lived with her mother at had finally dissolved and Aradia wished to pursue a formal education; Donald couldn't take her in himself as his military career kept him deployed most of any year. The Bahaar's agreed, again hoping Aradia would be a positive influence on Oneca and even helped get her enrolled for this year of college at UCLA.

Oneca herself spends just enough time on college to stay enrolled and in good standing. Her free time is a rather schitzophrenic split between the club scene and intense studies into the occult. She won't allow herself to think this, but deep in her heart and mind she knows she does this so that some day she can rescue her true sister and destroy the monster impersonator that has held her heart for most of her life.
