The first part is from Kevin's original Prologue Post Major-General Kevin Bridges (ret)

Well, Kevin had only planned on staying in Las Vegas for around two weeks, but here it had been a little over three and he was still here. This was boardering on the longest that he had ever stayed in one location since he'd started this 'walkabout', but he couldn't help it. There were so many people, especially this time of year, who needed his help. Plus, he'd encountered at least one Mutant who, since he wasn't locked away, wasn't registered.

He'd even heard a whisper or two of other unregistered mutants in the area. Nothing specific, nothing confirmed, and possibly just idle chatter, but maybe not.

Kevin had to find out. If there were unregistered mutants out there, they'd probably need his help. He'd already had one come in with the symptoms of the virus, and if there were others, they might need his help to. They would definately need his help if they were to try and reverse the steady slide into chaos that the loss of most of the Mutants in the world had caused.

Of course, until he found them, he had duties at the clinic that he had to attend to. He might not be a regular employee, but there was a certian ammount of work that needed to be done for him to still have a place to stay when he got back.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

They had a small TV installed in the main Lobby which was somehow hardwired to the local news channel. Kevin watched with growing unease how the local Police forces were trying to contain the masses of Mutants that were forced into the new local MIC.

„What a shame“, Miriam commented somewhat unaware what the consequences of an outbrake could mean for the free clinic. Her reaction was almost typical for the rather indifferent human. She pitied the Mutants but since she didn’t have any relatives or other real connections to the mutant community watching them suffer felt like watching some disaster in Africa – it was far away.

„This is Las Vegas, Miriam“, Kevin mentioned hoping that Miriam would slowly grasp the meaning of this.

„Really? I thought?“, the young woman’s words somehow dried out her throat suddenly. Embarrassed by her lack of awareness she quickly picked up a medical report and double checked it.

Kevin remained in the Lobby and couldn’t pry his eyes off the screen...

Kevin understood Miriam's reaction. Those people were different, it wasn't happening to her or anybody she knew. He wondered absently how she would feel if he was on the TV, being forced into a modern mutant concentration camp.

"Miriam," He said over his shoulder, "check and see where we are on the list for receiving wounded if something were to go wrong at the MIC." He was pretty sure he knew the answer, but it would give her something to do besides be embarrassed. "Not that it's going to, but it's better to be prepared, right?" He wrenched his eyes off of the screen to look at Miriam with an expression that he hoped conveyed that everything was going to be ok.

Miriam nodded at Kevin and he could see the relief in her eyes. She smiled at him as she left for the office and check the list (and probably make a few calls).

In the meantime the situation on TV got even worse. Kevin could see how some of the Mutants had managed to break free and fight against the authorities. The newsman on screen reported about a special unit being called in to attack the Mutants who decided to break the law. It made him sick to his stomach and he gasped briefly when he saw that the camera filming the escalation shook violently. There was a quick switch to a different angle and a grounded camera now showed to scene from another perspective. It briefly swerved to the Mutants and something like a fireball emerged from their midst and hit one of the helicopters circling the area. It was a solid hit and the machine instantly fell from the sky like a rock crashing into the next building before it evaporated into a ball of fire.

Kevin blinked a few times and the screen suddenly showed the networks colors and a standard message scrolled over the screen apologizing for the loss of connection. He was still stunned by the events when he heard Miriam coming back from the office.

„We are on hold as usual. We’ll get assigned as needed and I just received clearance to add the Police frequency to our Radio. They’ll provide us with more details and requests as needed. The Mayor just requested support from the National Guard...“, she stopped in midsentence when she saw Kevin staring at the screen.

„What happened?“

Kevin looked at Miriam, shock, surprise and distress mixed equally on his face. "It's hit the fan..."

Before she could even respond, he moved toward the doors. "See how many doctors we have on call and how long it would take them to get here. And see what the supplies look like. If things go south, and they won't, I don't want to run out of anything during a critical moment. Figure out how many critically wounded we can handle and be ready with that number." The doors whooshed open as he approached. "Oh, and keep an ear on the scanner." He turned and gave Miriam a big smile, "That way we know when this has all blown over, right?"

Knowing Miriam well enough to know that she wouldn't be dumbstruck by the preparations, he assumed that she would give an affirmative response. Kevin walked just far enough outside to see the outline of the top of the MIC off in the distance. He kept an eye out for more blatant use of powers (like lightning from the sky or giant fireballs), and, as always, a well trained ear listening for the tell-tale sound of an ambulance on approach.

Miriam was busy following his orders and making sure everything was ready for the worst case while Kevin walked outside.

It didn’t take long before he could hear the first ambulance far in the south followed by a small ‚escort‘ of several police cars and fire trucks which all were headed towards the MIC area. Kevin estimated that it would take about another 15 minutes before they would get the first call and after that things would go south if the police didn’t manage to contain the situation. As he slowly walked back inside he could see the TV showing footage again but unlike before the feed didn’t seem to come from an official news team.

He could tell by the angles and constant switching of PoV that someone was providing the network with footage, live footage which obviously wasn’t meant to be shown. Policemen were shooting with rubber rounds and teargas at a group of mutants who desperately fought for their freedom. He could see that there were teenagers and children the Police was shooting it, indiscriminately.

What on earth was going on?

“This is adam 2012 calling Free Clinic, over? This is adam 2012 calling Free Clinic – we’ve got 2 heavily wounded from the MIC. A police officer and an old lady, probably suffering from a heart attack. Is anyone listening?“

Kevin sighed and shook his head as he walked back into the clinic. Governments forcing citizens to do what they didn't want to do (whether it was for their own good or not depended on location, and even then it was still up for debate). His heart sunk as he watched the news channel. His instinct was to go and help the mutants; protect them while he spoke sense into them and the police. But by doing so he would reveal himself to the world, disgrace the crown, and end up in a MIC himself, and that was one place that he definitely didn't want to be. His best hope of getting the mutants out of the MIC was to find that ever elusive cure for the virus.

After years of battlefield triage, the sudden sound of the radio didn't actually startle Kevin. He picked out the words from the background noise and flew into action. Picking up the mic he pushed the button and responded.

"Adam twenty-twelve this is Free Clinic. What's the trauma on the officer and what's your ETA?"

Well, so much for that...

"Miriam! We got incoming! One wounded cop and and one elderly female, possible heart attack! Prep O.R. 1 for trauma and have the defib cart charging!" Ah, old times...

The Ambulance halted with screaming wheels and the medical staff immediately took over.

„It’s a mess out there – and we are currently only taking care of the police forces and citizens. No one is out there for the mutants, they leave them to die.“, the driver of the ambulance said while they were carrying the seriously injured officer to O.R. 1.

„They’re arleady dead, it’s a waste of time and resources...“, the other field medic said with obvious dislike of the mutants.

Both O.R. where fully prepared but the second Surgeon was still missing and Kevin couldn’t treat both at the same time.

In the meantime another message came over the Radio – „Adam 2427 – we’ve got 2 wounded officers, 2nd grade burnings at least, requesting free clinic“

The message repeated over and over again...

I'd like a roll vs. DC 18 from you using your treatment or specialised medical expertise. You have a chance of saving them both depending on your degree of success - or you use your power. In that case please make a power check

The fact the mutants were being left to die out there wasn't lost on Kevin, but the only thing that he could do was work with the people that they brought him. Maybe, if they could hang on long enough, he could go and treat them after the fighting had ceased... it was the best he could think of with two patients lying on his table.

Where is that other doctor anyway? Miriam was supposed to have already checked to see who was on call...

"Someone get on the horn and tell them to take those burn patients to St. Jude! They got a whole burn center over there, we need to keep our beds for the people who can't make it anywhere else!"

Now came the tough decision, who to treat first? Seconds could make the difference between life and death for some traumas, but they definitely did for all heart attacks. So he went to the woman first. He ordered drips and injections, just like any doctor would, but he also touched her, and let some of his healing power flow into her. Not a lot, even for a heart attack, but enough, hopefully, to get her past the point where she needed his undivided attention.

Even with his super-human powers, there was only so much that he could do... hopefully it would be enough.

When Kevin is in this kind of situation, he relies on both regular doctoring as well as his powers... so I rolled for them both.

Treatment roll @ Free Clinic Roll: 3 +13 Modifier -18 DC = -2 FAIL.

Second Chance

Second Chance Treatment Roll @ Free Clinic Roll: 16 +13 Modifier -18 DC = +11 PASS.

3 degrees of sux

Healing use (1/2 power) @ Free Clinic Roll: 17 +4 Modifier -10 DC = +11 PASS.

3 degrees of sux

(don't know if you want a second treatment or healing roll for the second patient. If you do, just ask)

His healing touch got an immediate response out of the old lady and gave him plenty of time to treat the other victim while Miriam tried to coordinate the incoming calls and requests. Kevin couldn’t remember the last time he was in this kind of trouble, at least not since the war. Fortunately his old instincts and routine took over and he worked almost miraculously with uncanny precision, thus saving both lives in a matter of minutes. He was about to make his last finishing touches when all the lights died in flash followed by some kind of explosing. The entire building rumbled and for a few seconds everything was dark – then the auxiliary power kicked in but the technical equipment was dead.

Kevin could smell burnt cables and ozone from various electronical equipment which refused to work and wondered what just happened?

„Kevin!“, he could hear Miriam yell – „The phone and the radio is dead! We got power but nothing is working, no screens – nothing.!“

The staff was staring at eachother unsure what to do, some checked their mobiles and digital watches – but nothing worked. They were all dead.

Kevin sighed. Geez, what now? Then he pulled down his surgical mask so he could be heard clearly.

"Ok people, the tech's not working, but we still got power. Somebody try and find some working lights, and someone else check the water. Those two are our top two priorities." He heard some balking chatter start up and decided to silence it before it got out of hand.

"Back in my... school, they taught me the basics of medicine and triage. I learned how to do medicine without all the fancy equipment. Anybody else with survival, battlefield, 3rd world or any other kind of training on doing our job without tech come in here. Anybody who needs computers and the like to help people, go and direct the ambulances, start keeping paper records, figure out what's still working, and find ways to work around or fix what's not working."

He walked to the door to make his point stronger. "Miriam, I need you to direct. I'll be in here saving lives, I need you out there directing everybody." He knew she could do it, and waited for her affirmative before pulling his mask back up and going back to finish his work under the illumination of the emergency lights.

I don't think that the lights would be effected by an EMP, but it's possible. Maybe backup isn't connected to all of them. I'll leave that up to you, just figured my descriptions would add to the ambiance.

People were responding to him first slowly but then with determination. His experience inspired confidence and he got things working quickly again. He could hear Miriam’s voice over the general claimoring, people were asking what was going on and requesting help but nothing worked. Even the sirens outside had gone silent but Kevin didn’t have enough time to investigate.

Slowly the hospital filled up with people from the immediate surrounding – people had bruises and wounds from all kinds of sudden accidents that resulted from the sudden loss of power. Everything seemed to be affected, cars, buildings, lights – the entire grid.

The hospital was designed for emergency cases and was prepared to remain functional during crisis. It had an old diesel powered generator in the cellar which could last for several weeks before it needed refilling.

SG – thank you for the info but the EMP was somewhat stronger than your „average“ EMP. So most lights are actually dead but you have some still working. I have to kindly ask you to hold on for one more update before I can move your thread past a certain point – I grant you some freedom and let Kevin shine some as he saves a few lives wink

Kevin got out of his surgical scrubs once he finished with the officer and checked on the old lady who was stable. Once back in his white doctor's jacket, he went to the lobby and exam rooms. He cleaned and bandaged cuts, doling out a trickle of his power. He put cold compresses on bruises, adding a little power when he deemed it necessary. He also set some broken bones, using more of his power and setting them in temporary splints until the x-ray machine was up and running again.

He tried to pace himself, and he never used very much of his power, but, as the sweat rolled down his forehead, he knew that he couldn't keep on like this all day. Hopefully something would change soon.
