O’Malley, Bryan

Rank: Captain

Branch: Command

Date of Birth: 2079

Place of Birth: The Federated States of America

Psi-Index: Neutral

Background:

A fifth-generation Irish-American born in the New York arcology O’Malley was accepted into a prominent FSA military academy after graduating high school. There he showed remarkable leadership qualities. However, after graduation he turned down a commission in the FSA military to instead join the Trinity’s Proteus Division.

O’Malley was serving as an Ensign on Research Outpost Vesta when it was attacked by the returning aberrants on January 28th 2104. O’Malley’s quick thinking & dedication to duty led directly to the destruction of one of the attackers through the deployment of a (then) experimental pulse cannon; which, in turn, caused the aberrants to retreat. One of the few survivors of Vesta, he was then promoted to Lieutenant & reassigned to Proteus’ efforts to defend the solar system from the increasing number of attacks by the newly returned aberrants.

Lieutenant O’Malley was nearly killed during a battle to defend Luna from aberrant assault, when he disregarded his own safety in order to save the life of on of his men who had been badly wounded. His efforts to get his man to the safety of a MEL transport were captured by the vehicle’s camera. O’Malley himself was struck by an aberrant ‘quantum bolt’ during the rescue, & would have died if not for the efforts of the recently revealed Vitakinetic psi order. The Trinity awarded O’Malley both the Jake Stefokowski Medal for Valour for his bravery above & beyond the call of duty, & the Vitakinetic Heart for wounds received in the line of duty.

O’Malley’s excellent record & expertise in fighting aberrants led to him being chosen as a Proteus military liaison to the Qin home system, not long after first contact was established with the aliens. O’Malley fought valiantly during several military encounters with aberrants attacking the Qin, most notably…

[CLASSIFIED]

… In appreciation for his efforts the Qin, having adopted some human customs, awarded O’Malley with the newly created Qinshui Legion of Honour. O’Malley is one of only a handful of humans to receive such an honour from the Qin.

In 2110, after his tour on Qinshui was up, O’Malley transferred to the Trinity Exploration Force. After academy training he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander & assigned as second officer aboard the TEF Hubris, a frontier-class Supernova frigate assigned to psi-jumped interstellar exploration, where he served with further distinction.

O’Malley was Earth-side, on leave, when the Upeo wa Macho vanished. Unable to return to, or even contact, the Hubris [see file #2114L-27 Lost Ships TEF Hubris], O’Malley was promoted to full Commander & given command of an in-system surveyor-class Falcon, the TEF Juno, assigned to exploration of Jupiter & its moons. After a respectful, yet uneventful, tour of duty, O’Malley accepted a position at the TEF academy as an instructor of xenorelations & Qin linguistics.

In 2118 the Trinity selected O’Malley to command one of the new explorer-class Scarabs, in anticipation of the completion of the classified jump ship project. O’Malley accepted & was promoted to Captain. For the last two years Captain O’Malley has commanded the TEF Columbus through its shakedown tour of the solar system, & actively contributed to the adjustments & refits of the explorer-class to prepare the vessels for extrasolar exploration missions.

Service Record:

2118 to present – Promoted to Captain; Captain of the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2117 to 2118 – TEF academy instructor of xenorelations & Qin linguistics

2114 to 2117 – Promoted to Commander; Captain of the in-system surveyor-class Falcon, TEF Juno

2110 to 2114 – Attended TEF academy; promoted to Lt. Commander; second officer of the psi-jumped frontier-class Supernova TEF Hubris

2108 to 2110 – Proteus division military liaison to Qinshui

2104 to 2108 – Proteus division system defence force; promoted to Lieutenant

2100 to 2104 – Proteus division training; assigned as Ensign to Research Outpost Vesta

Medals & Awards:

Vesta assault battle ribbon

Luna defence battle ribbon

Qinshui service ribbon

Twelve year service ribbon

TEF Extrasolar service ribbon

TEF Instructor service ribbon

Jake Stefokowski Medal for Valour

Vitakinetic Heart

Qinshui Legion of Honour

Psychological Profile:

Captain O’Malley is a strong-willed individual & a born leader, with proven ability in both military command & interspecies diplomacy.

Notes:

Captain O’Malley is one of the most dedicated men I know; we’re lucky to have him with us on this project. I know for a fact that without the Captain’s presence the Qin would have been unlikely to agree to partake in this mission. O’Malley has my full trust & support – I only hope his new crew can measure up to the man who’s commanding them. (Admiral James Kelly, commander of the Leviathan-class jump ship TEF Infinity)

Meyers, Brian

Rank: Lieutenant Commander

Branch: Security

Date of Birth: 2089

Place of Birth: United African Nations

Psi-Index: Neutral

Background:

Born a UAN citizen in South Africa, Meyers’ family soon moved to Luna, where Meyers proved to be a superior scholar & athlete, winning a scholarship to New Oxford, where he graduated with a first-class honours degree in medicine.

Attending the TEF academy Meyers took medical branch training, before being assigned as an Ensign to the TEF xenology team sent to study the recently encountered ‘Chromatic’ alien species at the Karroo Mining Colony in the Crab Nebula. A few months later the Upeo wa Macho vanished, cutting off the barely self-sufficient colony station from Earth.

During the time that the station was isolated Meyers joined in with the miner’s efforts to defend themselves, training with a security team, & also provided much needed medical expertise. During the Chromatics’ full-scale assault on Karroo in September 2116 Meyers was forced to take command of a security squad when his team leader was killed. The Ensign’s leadership proved effective, & the squad under his command (soon to be referred to by the colonists as “Doc’s Squad”) was instrumental in repelling the attack. Reports of both Upeo wa Macho & aberrant involvement in the battle…

[CLASSIFIED]

… The skeleton TEF command staff that remained at Karroo granted Meyers a field promotion to Lieutenant, & a transfer to the security branch, for his efforts.

When the first jump ships re-established contact with the Karroo colony earlier this year, Meyers chose to return to Earth for de-briefing & retraining. Based on the reports of the TEF command staff, & the praise of the colonial administrators, Meyers was promoted to Lieutenant Commander & assigned to the TEF Columbus as second officer. A grateful UAN awarded Meyers their Colonial Star medal for services rendered in defence of their colony.

Service Record:

2120 to present – retrained at TEF academy (security branch); promoted to Lieutenant Commander; assigned as second officer of the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2116 to 2120 - transferred to security branch; field promotion to Lieutenant

2114 to 2115 – assigned to Karroo station as an Ensign with the TEF xenology team sent to study the recently encountered Chromatics

2112 to 2113 – attended TEF academy (medical branch)

Medals & Awards:

Karroo station battle ribbon

TEF Extrasolar service ribbon

UAN Colonial Star

Psychological Profile:

At the start of his TEF career Lieutenant Commander Meyers was motivated by the adventure & excitement of extrasolar exploration & frontier life, as well as a genuine desire to help humanity. After his experiences on the Karroo colony his outlook appears to have been (understandably) tempered by the harsh realities of hostile alien contact & life in a resource-poor environment. Whilst Meyers’ leadership skills & brilliant mind are undeniable, only time will tell how deeply the scars of his experiences of recent years go.

Notes:

It is, perhaps, telling that Meyers chose to remain with the security branch, rather than transfer back to his original medical career path. Whilst his experiences with the Chromatics are of obvious value to the mission, there is a possibility that such negative encounters may colour his approach to further xeno-contact situations. I have high hopes for this man; he could be a great asset to the mission. Hopefully placing Meyers under an experienced Captain like O’Malley will maximise his chances of a positive & productive TEF career. Adair, Jason

Rank: Lieutenant

Branch: Pilot

Date of Birth: 2095

Place of Birth: United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland

Psi-Index: Active [biokinetic]: Competent at both adaptation & psychomorphing modes

Background:

Born in Portsmouth, England, Adair studied marine botany & biology for a year in Venezuela, before dropping out when his psi-latency was discovered. At first approaching the Nova Fôrça de Nacionales, an incident occurred with the Pai de Norça when…

[ERROR - FILES MISSING]

… On the strength of several glowing letters of recommendation from former professors & acquaintances Adair was accepted to the TEF academy pilot training program, & proved a skilled pupil. Adair was especially efficient with the operation of Orgotek biotech vessels, & his subsequent triggering as a biokinetic only improved upon his talents.

Graduating the academy Ensign Adair was assigned to the explorer-class Scarab TEF Bristow, surveying the asteroid belt & outer planets. When the TEF restarted the extrasolar exploration program, with the new jump ships, Adair received a promotion to Lieutenant, & is currently assigned as the pilot of the TEF Columbus.

Service Record:

2120 to present –promoted to Lieutenant; assigned as pilot of the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2117 to 2119 – assigned as Ensign to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Bristow

2115 to 2116 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Psychological Profile:

Adair is strongly independent. However, he has demonstrated few problems taking orders thus far, and has given no signs that such problems will develop in the future; his independence reflects a deep-seated need for personal freedom, rather than a need to rebel against authority.

The death of his college love, Adriana Emmanuella, from a heroin overdose during the time he was in Brazil, coupled with the Norça incident where…

[ERROR FILES MISSING]

… may have resulted in feelings of personal failure. So far Adair seems to have harnessed these feelings in a relatively healthy manner by striving to not allow himself to fail again. As such the Lieutenant possesses a strong motivation to overcome or win personal challenges.

Notes:

Looking over Adair’s record makes me slightly suspicious. The recommendations he received to enter the academy are a little too perfect for my liking, not to mention the missing files (almost certainly a symptom of Norça paranoia & sabotage). However, I’ve spoken to Captain Kraven of the Bristow, & he tells me that young Adair is a fine pilot & an upstanding officer - & that he spares no love for the Norça. Kraven also filled in some of the gaps left by those deleted files, based on what Adair had told him. I can see why the Pai would want evidence like that erased.

Considering the more traumatic elements of Adair’s background it’s an impressive testimony to his personality that he’s as stable as he appears to be. I’m inclined to give this young man the benefit of the doubt, if for no other reason than to prove the Pai’s restrictive policies on triggering biokinetics are wrong. Beckett, Robert

Rank: Lieutenant

Branch: Science

Date of Birth: 2094

Place of Birth: Luna

Psi-Index: Neutral

Background:

Beckett was born & raised on Luna, where he achieved a first class honours degree in astronomy & related sciences. Notably he also served with distinction for several years as a Luna Vacuum Rescuer. Beckett’s record in this volunteer force is without blemish; he has been credited with personally risking his own life to save others on numerous occasions, & has even received moderate publicity for several of his more daring rescues; not to mention receiving the Olympus medal of citizenship on two separate occasions.

Beckett initially turned down the place he was offered at the TEF academy, instead choosing to spend some time travelling Earth. His adventurous nature led him to explore the wilder areas of the planet, during which time he trained for & received a professional diving qualification - amongst the acquisition of several less-quantifiable skills.

Finally accepting a place at the TEF academy, Beckett trained in the science branch & was assigned to the TEF Yuggoth for a long-term survey mission of Pluto. His scientific capabilities & superior micro-gravity skills served the mission well. Since the recent conclusion of the Pluto survey, Beckett has been promoted & re-assigned to the TEF Columbus.

Service Record:

2120 to present – promoted to Lieutenant; assigned as science officer of the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2117 to 2119 – assigned as Ensign to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Yuggoth, for long-term survey of Pluto

2115 to 2116 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Olympus medal of citizenship (twice)

Psychological Profile:

Beckett throws himself into everything he does with great vigour, always giving the proverbial one-hundred & ten percent. He has a great urge to explore, & is eager for adventure, yet is very professional in his duties.

Notes:

Beckett is just the type of young go-getter the TEF needs for this latest series of extrasolar explorations. Already a ‘hero’ before he joined the TEF, having a man like this as part of the project can only be good for the positive image the Trinity is trying to project. I foresee young Beckett as being a great asset to Captain O’Malley’s team. (Admiral James Kelly, commander of the Leviathan-class jump ship TEF Infinity)

Smith, Edgar

Rank: Lieutenant

Branch: Engineering

Date of Birth: 2099

Place of Birth: Federated States of America

Psi-Index: Active [Vitakinetic]: Competent at iatrosis mode; auxiliary psychometry mode

Background:

Smith was born in a rather rural community in Alabama in the FSA, where his parents ran a ‘fix-it’ shop. It was there that his natural talents at repairing machinery were first noticed at a very young age.

In 2109, when Smith was ten years old, a Trinity evaluation team confirmed him as a prodigy. With the approval of his parents, Smith joined a Trinity program for intellectually gifted youngsters, where he excelled in particular at engineering, & was also confirmed as possessing psi-potential with a strong leaning towards vitakinesis.

Smith elected to continue his education at the TEF academy when he turned sixteen. He was triggered in the vitakinetic aptitude & proved to possess an excellent grasp of both hard- & bio- technology. After graduating the academy Smith was assigned to the explorer-class Scarab TEF Bristow, surveying the asteroid belt & outer planets. When the TEF restarted the extrasolar exploration program, with the new jump ships, Smith received a promotion to Lieutenant, & is currently assigned as the engineer of the TEF Columbus.

Service Record:

2120 to present – promoted to Lieutenant; assigned as engineer of the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2117 to 2119 – assigned as Ensign to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Bristow

2115 to 2116 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Psychological Profile:

Despite the impression his ‘provincial’ accent often appears to impart, Smith rates in the top percentiles of human intelligence. His young age & rather quirky habits have combined to create a situation where Smith often feels he isn’t taken as seriously as perhaps he should be. However, his expertise, & drive to build a better future for mankind, are text-book TEF qualities.

Notes:

Captain Kraven joined the rest of young Smith’s teachers & superiors in praising his well-applied genius. In many ways this young man is a classic Trinity success story – a gifted mind ‘rescued’ from obscurity in some back-water FSA town. His education & training have proven a great success so-far. My only real concern with Smith is his young age & relative inexperience. Those special education programs for genius children may produce superior academic results, but they seldom teach much about the harsh realities of life. However, I’m confident that O’Malley will make sure that Smith’s education is rounded out &, considering some of the other officers he’ll be serving with, I’m sure that this assignment is the right place for our young prodigy. Suvorov, Alexander

Rank: Ensign

Branch: Security

Date of Birth: 2100

Place of Birth: Russian Federation

Psi-Index: Neutral

Background:

Born in a small & isolated town in rural Russia, Suvorov grew up a hunter. When he became a young adult, he made his way, mostly on foot, to Bucharest. There he sought out Trinity officials & requested admission to the TEF academy.

Despite Suvorov’s lack of access to formal education during his formative years, he proved (with the aid of appropriate extra lessons) a fast learner & successfully graduated the academy. He excelled at the physical demands of the academy, & his unique background provided him with superior survival & wilderness skills.

Suvorov’s first assignment is as a security officer aboard the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus, under Captain O’Malley.

Service Record:

2120 to present –assigned as Ensign to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2118 to 2119 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Psychological Profile:

Suvorov displays both an impressive determination & a well-honed recognition of the needs of a group to co-operate towards a common goal that many TEF officers, educated in a more contemporary manner, sometime lack. His devotion to traditional, & somewhat primitive, solutions to problems is ingrained, yet doesn’t appear to hamper his ability to work, when necessary, with the latest equipment. Whilst it’s unlikely that Suvorov will ever be command-material himself, he presents an attitude that lends itself well to promoting teamwork.

Notes:

I find myself admiring this kid, despite my better judgment. He can be more focused than many of the officers we have, yet also knows how to follow orders without letting his ego get in the way. That’s the sort of combination that any commander can usually only wish for in his subordinates. His physical skills are especially impressive, & I count us lucky that he didn’t choose to apply to the Legions instead – he’d have made a fine soldier although, in my (admittedly bias) estimate that would have been a waste. Suvorov’s wilderness skills are more hands-on than most of the TEF could boast, & I feel his alternate perspective in such matters may prove to be an invaluable asset to O’Malley’s team. Logan, Rhianna Loraine

Rank: Lieutenant

Branch: Science

Date of Birth: 2092

Place of Birth: Federated States of America

Psi-Index: Active [Clairsentient]: Competent in psychonavigation mode; auxiliary mindshare mode

Background:

Born in the Oregon arcology of the FSA Logan attended the University of San Francisco on a swim team / diving scholarship, before continuing on to graduate top of her class with a first class honours degree in geology & cartography. From there she was accepted into the TEF academy.

Testing as positive for psi-potential, Logan was triggered as a clairsentient, & underwent training as a TEF science officer. Showing, in her instructors’ estimates, extreme potential, Cadet Logan was due to be assigned to a coveted psi-jumped extrasolar exploration mission upon her graduation. However, the Esperanza crash & disappearance of the teleporters required her re-assignment. In the aftermath of the disaster, whilst Logan was still a Cadet, she was assigned to France to aid Trinity rescue teams search for survivors. It was there that her auxiliary mindshare mode spontaneously manifested.

Upon graduation Logan was assigned as an Ensign to the surveyor-class Falcon, TEF Roger Young, on a long-term mission to survey the Oort Cloud at the edge of the Solar system for rare elements.

Upon the completion of the Roger Young’s survey mission, Logan was promoted to Lieutenant & re-assigned to the explorer-class Scarab TEF Columbus under Captain O’Malley. There she actively contributed to adjustment & refit of the explorer-class’s biotech sensors, & also received a commendation for her part in the location & rescue of a lost mining ship damaged & adrift in the asteroid belt.

Service Record:

2118 to present – promoted to Lieutenant; assigned as science officer to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2115 to 2117 – assigned as Ensign to the surveyor-class Falcon, TEF Roger Young

2113 to 2114 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Commendation for location & rescue of damaged asteroid mining vessel

Psychological Profile:

Logan is determined & focused, with a ‘hands-on’ approach that is somewhat uncommon amongst the often detached clairsentients. Her experiences in the aftermath of the Esperanza disaster have obviously left certain emotional scars, but the Lieutenant has managed to avoid allowing such traumas to get in the way of her role in the TEF. She has exhibited signs of self-doubt, especially after the Esperanza incident, & sometimes feels the need to seek further training, rather than relying on her already establish abilities – although, again, she’s worked past such tendencies which exhibit themselves less & less as time passes. These tendencies appear to be the result of Logan’s drive to succeed, perhaps inspired at a young age by her divorced, overachieving, & competitive parents.

Notes:

O’Malley says Logan is a fine officer & a proven quantity on a team that, for the most part, hasn’t worked under his command before. To me her file reads like a typical example of a career-minded officer: she could go far, if she allows herself the chance to develop as a person beyond the strict needs of the job – such personal development is, in my opinion, a must considering the structure of these extrasolar explorations. The last thing we need is an officer like Logan burning out in the middle of a mission! Still, her record is exemplary, & she has her Captain’s trust, so we couldn’t ask for much more in a TEF officer. (Admiral James Kelly, commander of the Leviathan-class jump ship TEF Infinity)

Soto, Marina

Rank: Ensign

Branch: Security

Date of Birth: 2097

Place of Birth: European Commonwealth - Italy

Psi-Index: Active [Psychokinetic]: Competent in telekinesis mode

Background:

Despite her Italian citizenship, Soto was born to parents who were active members of the Æon Trinity & subsequently spent much of her childhood at various research & off-planet facilities, whilst receiving a high-level Trinity-sponsored education.

When the psi-orders first revealed themselves to the world at large in 2106, & the Trinity gathered the first recruits into its psi-jumped Exploration Force, Soto’s parents were both at the top of the list. Rodrigo Soto [see file #2106TEF-JT - Soto, Rodrigo - DECEASED], Marina’s father, was one of the very first extra-solar explorers, assigned to the first wave of psi-jumped survey teams. His wife, Amelie Soto [see file #2106TEF-RG - Soto, Amelie - DECEASED], soon rose to lead one of the research groups collating & investigating the data the exploration teams brought back with them.

Marina Soto followed her two elder brothers to the TEF academy in 2113. That same year the family received the tragic news that both Rodrigo Soto & his eldest son Rodrigo junior [see file #2109TEF-JT - Soto, Rodrigo - DECEASED] (who had joined the jump-team his father then led) had been killed during the initial Chromatic attack on the Karroo station – the Soto team had been present on the station as part of an on-going mission to survey the Crab Nebula.

The next year led to further loss: Amelie Soto was stationed on-board the Esperanza orbital station when it was destroyed by aberrants in 2114. Despite these losses both Marina & her remaining brother Francesco [see file #2111TEF-MD - Soto, Francesco] decided to stay with the TEF. Soto excelled at her security branch training; academy testing also revealed her latency & she was triggered in the psychokinesis aptitude.

Upon graduation Soto was assigned as an Ensign to the surveyor-class Falcon, TEF Roger Young, on a long-term mission to survey the Oort Cloud at the edge of the Solar system for rare elements.

On completion of the Roger Young's survey mission Soto requested a transfer - the first of many such requests. Since that time she's not remained on a single assignment for more than a few months - each time requesting a transfer to duties as different as possible to those she's currently assigned to.

Soto's most recent transfer request was accepted by Admiral Kelly after initially being rejected by the TEF assignments directorate.

Service Record:

2120 to present – assigned as security officer to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2118 to 2119 - various assignments

2115 to 2117 – assigned as Ensign to the surveyor-class Falcon, TEF Roger Young

2113 to 2114 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Runner-up in the TEF Academy Gunnery Championships of 2114

Psychological Profile:

Soto has the twin motivations of family upbringing & Trinity education prompting her to embrace the ideals of human exploration.

Although once noted as an outgoing & headstrong young woman, the various family tragedies – especially the loss of her mother so soon after her father & brother were killed – have conspired to transform her into a more introspective individual. Still, despite (or, perhaps, because of) these personal tragedies Soto’s focus on exploration is intense.

Besides her powerful urge to ‘see what’s out there’ Soto also exhibits a drive to protect & serve both humanity as a whole & those around her.

Soto has requested transfers on several occasions, indicating both a natural ‘wanderlust’ & a failure to find a ‘niche’ she feels is ideally suited to her.

Marina & her last remaining brother, Francesco (a xeno-specialist doctor within the TEF), are very close – the loss of one would most likely emotionally devastate the other. It is perhaps the presence of each other within the ranks, as well as a sense of family commitment, that keep both Soto siblings in the TEF.

Notes:

After reading Soto’s psyche profile I was tempted to reject her transfer application to the extrasolar exploration section. However, we (the TEF as a whole) owe this family too much for me to reject such a request out of hand. Although reports from her previous commanding officers have all been good to excellent, Soto’s tendency to request transfers after a few months on an assignment is a worrying trait. Perhaps on the Columbus she’ll find that ‘niche’ she’s been looking for? I certainly hope so – Rodrigo Soto was a good friend & a valued colleague – if we can do right by his daughter, then we’ll have gone a long way to honoring his memory, & that of his family. Singh, Jamal

Rank: Cadet

Branch: Science

Date of Birth: 2101

Place of Birth: Liberty Orbital Station

Psi-Index: Active [Telepathic]: Practiced in mindshare mode, novice in psychbending & empathy modes

Background:

Singh was born via an experimental artificial womb on Liberty station a month after his parents had died in a freak shuttle accident – it is a testament to the medical personnel present that the child was able to be transferred from his terminally injured mother in time to be saved.

Adopted by Triton administrator Rebecca Morez the young Singh was raised & educated in top-class Trinity facilities wherever Morez’s work took her.

When Morez was assigned to the new human embassy on Qinshui in 2108 seven-year-old Jamal accompanied her. There his education continued in the enclosed bioglass dome of the embassy.

Soon after the teleporters vanished in 2114, the thirteen-year-old Singh tested positive for psi-latency. Without access to a Prometheus chamber to trigger his psi-potential, Singh was limited to theoretical study, rather than practical psionic training. However, his latency proved enough to enable the young man to study & learn the Qin’s native semi-psionic language under the tutelage of one of the Qin academics who liaised with the humans stranded on the Qin homeworld.

When the first jumpships reached Qinshui in 2119, Singh was amongst the first of the embassy humans to return to the Solar system. Under the sponsorship of Captain Bryan O’Malley the young man entered the TEF academy, where he was finally triggered as a telepath.

Cadet Singh’s assignment as a science officer aboard the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus, under Captain O’Malley, is part of his final TEF officer’s examinations.

Service Record:

2120 to present –assigned as Cadet to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2119 to 2120 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Psychological Profile:

Singh displays an interesting series of behaviors which have come to be identified amongst those humans who spent the years of isolation from Earth in the embassy dome on Qinshui:

His social skills are somewhat skewed – tending towards formality & social paranoia – which could be seen as misleading & deceptive amongst mainstream human society; & peppered with the occassional socially unusual outburst at odd times.

He also appears most comfortable in enclosed environments with limited social contacts. Although his contact with members of the Qin race has made him more comfortable than most amongst the aliens, it should be noted that, like the vast majority of those who lived at the embassy, Singh never actually set foot outside the compound the entire time he lived there.

Singh’s willingness to follow orders & help the group without any particular emotional need for individual praise may well also be the result of his unusual childhood environment & contact with the Qin.

Singh’s choice to follow the Sikh faith of parents he never met seems an unusual one, especially considering his lack of exposure to that religion over the years. Perhaps his choice is indicative of a deeper yearning for his lost biological family, or an inner need for tradition & stability after spending so many childhood years isolated amongst an alien culture?

Notes:

I’ll admit that this kid wouldn’t have been my first choice as an assignment to the Columbus – to my mind he needs more time on Earth to learn how to be a normal human, rather than being whisked off to the stars again. His academy scores are good, particularly in linguistics, & his insights into alien cultures aren’t to be dismissed; but if O’Malley hadn’t of requested Cadet Singh personally, I don’t think he’d have made the mission. Still, I’m sure the good Captain knows what he’s letting himself in for… I just hope he’s not trying to make up for the years he missed with Becky…(Admiral James Kelly, commander of the Leviathan-class jump ship TEF Infinity)

Brooks, Sharon

Rank: Ensign

Branch: Pilot

Date of Birth: 2099

Place of Birth: Australia

Psi-Index: Active [Psychokinetic]: Competent with telekinesis mode, novice with cryokinesis mode

Background:

Brooks’ father was a decorated Colonel in the Australian armed forces, her mother a respected doctor. The two separated when Sharon was five years old, the young girl staying with her mother. Two years later it was revealed to Colonel Brook’s estranged family, as well as the world at large, that he had been one of the first recruits into the psychokinetic order of Legionnaires – when the Colonel took part in that order’s first public act: the historic defense of the Sydney space port from aberrant assault.

The explanation for the secret behavior that had, in part, led to the break-up of the Brooks’ marriage did little to reconcile the couple: Sharon saw more of her father on the OpNet than she did in person. Public awareness of the Psi orders also led to other changes in Brooks’ life, as her mother was selected to help medical research into the new Psions & what they could offer to aid in humanity’s defense against the aberrant threat.

Sharon’s mother died when she was ten...

[CLASSIFIED - LEVEL 5]

... in a freak laboratory accident.

Living with her father, Sharon developed anti-authoritarian & rebellious traits, although she tested high for psi-potential, & showed obvious intelligence. After refusing her father’s ‘suggestion’ to join the Legions, the young woman ran away. Her activities during this time are hard to trace, but show a general trend towards self-destruction.

Sharon eventually joined the TEF academy, against a formal complaint filed by her father. Brooks’ academy career was checkered, yet she showed enough raw talent & promise to pass final exams. She was triggered as a psychokinetic – again against formal protest by her father.

Ensign Brooks’ first assignment is as a pilot with the TEF Columbus.

Service Record:

2120 to present – assigned as Ensign to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2118 to 2119 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Psychological Profile:

Brooks’ rebellious streak is obviously the result of friction between her & her estranged father, perhaps stemming from misplaced anger over her mother’s death, or a childhood sense of abandonment. Still, despite her willingness to question orders, tests indicate that Sharon does believe in the mission of the TEF, & that her primary motivations are to help others.

Notes:

This one seemed a bit of a fire-brand – so I thought it best to place her with O’Malley. I’ll admit the fact that her Legionnaire father protested a little too strongly may have tipped the scales in the young woman’s favor, but – aside from the satisfaction of sticking it to the Legions – I do feel that, under the proper commanding officer, Brooks will hopefully find her focus & settle into becoming a fine officer. Hawke, Britt

Rank: Lieutenant

Branch: Pilot

Date of Birth: 2097

Place of Birth: United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland

Psi-Index: Neutral

Background:

An orphan & foundling, Hawke was raised in a variety of foster homes. His academic scores were average; although he did prove to possess a natural athletic aptitude, Hawke never showed any interest in a career in professional sports.

At the end of his formal education, Hawke was on a school trip to France when the Esperanza orbital station crashed. Although not in the most devastated region, the school party still lost several members. It was in the aftermath of the disaster that Hawke was noticed by TEF personnel – amongst the hysterics, panic, & emotional breakdowns that plagued a majority of the disaster’s survivors, the young man excelled himself by keeping a calm head on his shoulders & doing as much as he could to help those less injured than himself.

After some convincing, Hawke applied to the TEF academy. Initial tests placed him in either the security or science training programs – he chose science. However, it was clear to Hawke’s instructors that he wasn’t really comfortable amongst the rising stars of the academy, & it was feared that he would be lost to the program. As luck would have it, a chance encounter with a flight simulator turned Hawke’s TEF career around – he proved to be a natural, & had finally found an activity he could happily pour all his efforts into - Hawke transferred to pilot training.

Despite a rather mundane academy career in other respects, Hawke’s exceptional piloting skills – highlighted by his winning of the annual ‘Bakuhatsu Run’ contest (a dangerous race between piloting students in E-15T training hybrids along an obstacle course laid out amongst the craters of Luna) – ensured that he graduated the academy (although, overall, towards the middle of his class). His ‘Run’ time has, as of this date, yet to be beaten.

Hawke’s first assignment was as a hybrid pilot with the guardian-class Aerie, TEF Damocles – charged with protecting TEF missions, aiding system defence against possible aberrant incursions, & investigating accidents & attacks involving TEF assets. Having served with distinction, Hawke has been promoted to Lieutenant & re-assigned to the TEF Columbus.

Service Record:

2120 to present – promoted to Lieutenant; assigned as pilot to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2116 to 2119 - assigned as Ensign to the guardian-class Aerie, TEF Damocles

2114 to 2115 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Winner of the TEF Academy ‘Bakuhatsu Run’ hybrid race of 2115 - current record holder

Psychological Profile:

Hawke loves a challenge, & loves to fly. As one of those rare individuals who only really thrive in tense & dangerous situations, he’s able to keep his wits & focus in an emergency – perhaps more so than he can at more relaxed times. Despite this tendency towards being an ‘adrenaline junkie’, Hawke shows a genuine desire to help & protect others, & a willingness to put the needs of others before his own concerns.

Notes:

O’Malley deserves the best - & Hawke’s the best pilot I have. It’s also my personal opinion that Hawke deserves to be part of the Force’s exploration efforts – after all, if he’d just wanted a combat career, he could have joined the Legions. Defending TEF assets is a sad necessity, & valuable work, but I’m hoping that there’s more to this young man than just a hot-shot pilot – serving under O’Malley will give him the chance to prove himself as a more rounded TEF officer. I hope he makes the most of that chance. (Admiral James Kelly, commander of the Leviathan-class jump ship TEF Infinity)

Sukuko, Elizabeth

Rank: Commander

Branch: Command

Date of Birth: 2088

Place of Birth: United African Nations

Psi-Index: Neutral

Background:

Born in the Kenyan region of the UAN in 2088 Sukuko became the fifth wife of a local tribal elder in 2101. After giving birth to a son (Joshua) in 2103 & a daughter (Sophia) in 2105 she concentrated on her studies, with the aim of joining the UAN diplomatic service. However, after the public revelation of the existence of the Psi orders - & subsequent formation of the TEF - in 2106, Sukuko instead chose to apply to join the nascent Exploration Force.

After graduating the TEF academy Sukuko was assigned to the first of the TEF’s Supernova psi-jumped exploration vessels, the Frontier. A solid service record, combined with the opportunities to shine provided by the pioneering journeys of the Frontier, led to her promotion to Lieutenant in 2110.

Lieutenant Sukuko proved herself a competent & efficient command officer after leading various missions whilst assigned to the Frontier. When Far Nyumba was discovered & colonised by the UAN in 2112 Sukuko was recommended as part of the command crew leading the TEF xenology team to that moon.

When the teleporters disappeared in 2114 several of the Far Nyumban xenology team’s officers were on leave on Earth. To fill the gaps in the command structure, once it was realised that contact with TEF headquarters wasn’t to be re-established for some time, Sukuko was promoted to Lieutenant Commander. In that position she often commanded the team’s assigned surveyor-class Falcon, the TEF Ilikumai, & was in command of several of the missions which were instrumental in various discoveries relating to the ‘Zep’ aliens & other life on the gas giant Mgitu (of which Far Nyumba is itself the largest moon).

Once the new jumpships re-established contact with the extrasolar colonies, Lt Commander Sukuko was briefly assigned to lecture at the TEF academy on the xenology team’s research into the Zep aliens during their six years out of contact with Earth. However, her request for active exploration duty was accepted, & she has been promoted to full Commander & assigned to the TEF Columbus under Captain O’Malley.

Service Record:

2120 to present –TEF academy instructor on Zep xenology; promoted to Commander & assigned as First Officer of the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2112 to 2120 – assigned to Far Nyumba TEF xenology team; field promotion to Lieutenant Commander in 2114

2108 to 2111 – assigned as Ensign to the psi-jumped frontier-class Supernova TEF Frontier; promoted to Lieutenant in 2110

2106 to 2107 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Far Nyumba service ribbon

Twelve year service ribbon

TEF Extrasolar service ribbon

TEF Instructor service ribbon

UAN Colonial Star

Far Nyumban Medal of Citizenship

Psychological Profile:

Commander Sukuko is a solid officer who grounds her professional activities in the official rules & regulations of the TEF. Sukuko strives for professionalism in her work, & expects the same from others – she likes to run a tight ship, & has no qualms in disciplining subordinates.

Notes:

Commander Sukuko is a good officer, with previous experience of extrasolar exploration. With the diverse (some would say ‘motley’) crew which has been assigned to the Columbus, a well-grounded individual like Sukuko should help to ensure that Captain O’Malley doesn’t spend all his time worrying about the people under his command. Chow, Nu-Shan

Rank: Cadet

Branch: Engineer

Date of Birth: 2101

Place of Birth: Khantze Lu Ge

Psi-Index: Active [Electrokinetic]: Practiced with electromanipulation, photokinesis, & technokinesis modes

Background:

Born on the Chinese extrasolar colony of Khantze Lu Ge, Chow was raised in that harsh frontier environment.

Chow was five years old when the emergence of the Psi Orders led to teleporters from Earth re-contacting the Alpha Centauri colony. This led to the young girl’s first contacts with the new Trinity Exploration Force, & the beginning of a life-long goal to join in the exploration of the stars. Showing a keen mind & an affinity for technology, as well as testing positive for psi-potential, Chow studied engineering – primarily the terraforming technologies vital to the colony’s continued survival, but also, whenever she could, space technologies & bio-technology which would put her in good stead when she eventually applied to the TEF academy. Spending much of her spare time at the LuGeian space port, offering her help to the repair & maintenance teams working on the ships there, young Chow also picked up a few basic piloting lessons.

When Chow was thirteen, however, the teleporters vanished, once again cutting off the colony from Earth. Despite this set-back, she continued her studies, spending as much time with the TEF personnel remaining on the planet as she could &, despite the facts of the colony’s isolation, studying hard for the TEF academy entrance exams.

Then, in 2118, aberrants invaded Khantze Lu Ge...

[CLASSIFIED - LEVEL 3]

... Finally able to enter the TEF academy, Chow seized the opportunity to regain her childhood dream, & to leave the traumas of her past behind. Triggered as an electrokinetic, & trained in engineering, Chow’s hard work has earned her a place aboard the TEF Columbus for the remainder of her academy training.

Service Record:

2120 to present – attended TEF academy; assigned as Cadet to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

Medals & Awards:

Psychological Profile:

Chow has had a remarkable recovery from the traumatic incidents she’s suffered over recent years. Her willingness to sacrifice herself for others cannot be understated, yet there is evidence that her devotion to the ideals of the TEF had a considerable influence in allowing her to survive incidents that were the death of so many others.

Due to her recent history, Chow has some trouble socializing in non-formal situations & can come across as shy.

Always prone to being a hard worker – a result, most likely, of growing up on the frontier of a harsh colony world – Chow has thrown herself into her studies with a single-mindedness that borders on obsession. Hopefully active mission-time will mitigate this obsession, & prompt her to develop other aspects of her personality.

Notes:

She’s a tough one, that’s for sure. I find it an impressive testimony to her character that she insisted on winning the Columbus assignment through her own merits & hard-work, rather than playing on the sympathies that the selection board would obviously have for someone who’s suffered through the times she has. Still, despite the psyche-report, I can’t help thinking that there must be more trauma there somewhere – suppressed beneath the surface. Hopefully placing her on a ship where fellow crew members – like Lieutenant Commander Meyers – have faced extensive traumas of their own, will make sure that the young lady’s needs are met with understanding. Masters, Takashi

Rank: Ensign

Branch: Engineer

Date of Birth: 2099

Place of Birth: Nippon

Psi-Index: Neutral

Background:

One of the younger members of the powerful Masters clan, Takashi was raised with the best education that the wealth of Masters International Armaments (MIA – a Nippon-based manufacturer of high-tech weaponry & electronics) could provide.

Masters proved to have a great aptitude with technology – computers & avatar software in particular, but appears to have been unsatisfied by the prospect of joining the family business. During his later teenage years, young Masters left Nippon to travel the world & (in his own words) ‘find himself’. His activities during this period have proven difficult to trace.

Eventually Masters applied to the TEF academy & was accepted. There he studied the engineering course &, despite several reprimands on his academy records for numerous breaches of protocol, graduated near the top of his class. Whilst at the academy Masters remained undefeated in the inter-branch unarmed combat championships, showing a considerable mastery of karate in particular.

Masters’ first assignment is as an engineer with the TEF Columbus, under Captain O’Malley.

Service Record:

2120 to present – assigned as Ensign to the explorer-class Scarab, TEF Columbus

2118 to 2119 – attended TEF academy

Medals & Awards:

Winner of the TEF academy inter-branch unarmed combat championships 2118 & 2119

Psychological Profile:

Masters is an outgoing & charming individual – although this hides a certain pressure he feels to live up to the adventurous reputations of his forefathers. It is likely that he joined the TEF both to escape family responsibilities – to make a name for himself on his own - as well as in support of fellow TEF officer Sharon Brooks – who Masters appears to have known prior to entering the academy.

Masters appears to have a liking for being the centre of attention, but this also leads him to enjoy facing challenges & overcoming difficult odds.

Despite his rather reckless nature, Masters’ own sense of pride, if nothing else, means that he’ll support the mission of the TEF to the best of his abilities.

Notes:

Why did we have to get a Masters? I know their corporation spear-headed a lot of the anti-aberrant weapons & technology used in the War, before their move to Nippon, but I just can’t shake the feeling that the legendary ‘Masters gene’ will just cause problems. I’ve already started to suspect that this one used his influence to get the Columbus assignment, but I can’t prove anything, & he did score well in all the tests. If nothing else I can be reassured that Captain O’Malley is one officer who should be able to deal with having a Masters on his crew. At least, I hope he can… (Admiral James Kelly, commander of the Leviathan-class jump ship TEF Infinity)

Medals & Awards:

Psychological Profile:

Notes:

It’s a boon to the mission to have the Qin aboard, although I won’t pretend to understand them or their motives. I met this ‘Azure’ (she really is sky-blue in colour!) & she seems to be the most human-like Qin I’ve ever met – quite a friendly young lady. I know that’s mostly my own prejudices showing, but I’m sure that having the Qin with us will turn out to be for the best. Notes:

Okay, I have to say it – this guy is big & scary. We’ve been assured that he’s only got non-lethal weaponry on him, but who could ever tell? I’ve seen some of his combat practice sessions, & at times it’s like watching one of those old Hong Kong ‘wire fighting’ movies – I thought the Qin couldn’t use telekinesis modes? I guess it’s hard to tell where the Qin ends & the biotech begins, but this ‘Red’ character makes me nervous. I guess that’s the whole point of the ‘spiky’ appearance though… (Admiral James Kelly, commander of the Leviathan-class jump ship TEF Infinity)

SS4756 System

Sun SS4756

Sun's spectral type G1

ARBOREA

Source TEF discovery

Planet mass (Earth = 1) 0.83

Equatorial diamter (km) 11,704

Planetary gravity (Earth = 1) 0.9

Water content (Earth = 0.75) 0.81

Atmosphere nitrogen

Rotation period 23 hours

Indigenous life various, unknown

Closest distance to Earth 3,000 light years

Primary satellite ring system

Arborea

Located coreward of Averiguas, the SS4756 system was recently psi surveyed by a dedicated team of ISRA clairsentients working with the TEF. Due to its primary's similar spectral type to Sol the system was suspected of being a prime contender for viable biospheres. Initial psi surveys confirmed that the system did, in fact, possess a planet that supports life.

Clairsentient reports suggest that SS4756 IV possesses a nitrogen / oxygen atmosphere with some contaminants & a high water vapour content. The planet's name was selected due to the overwhelming consensus amongst the Clairsentients involved in psi surveying the planet that images of trees predominated in their visions. Only after the name had been officially recorded did a junior technician with an interest in history see fit to point out that the name also refers to a fictional kingdom in the twentieth century 'Flash Gordon' series of pulp science fiction adventures.

Of the other planets in the SS4756 system only III also has an atmosphere - predominantly chlorine. I, II, III, IV, & X are rock planets; V, VI, & IX are gas giants; the orbits designated VII & VIII are two distinct asteroid belts. IV has a ring system; V has 11 moons & a ring system; VI has 15 moons & a ring system; IX has 12 moons & a ring system; X has a single moon. Only IV - Arborea - shows any signs of life.

The TEF Columbus has been assigned to investigate Arborea.
