In 2097 a investment corporation named Ul-tech bought up many old compounds and research programs of russian origin thrugh a number of ghost companys and "independant" contractors. Among these researchprograms was one named ñîâà, or owl. It was a military project from the start and it is unknown how Ul-tech got hold of it in the first place, but it is belived that it was a combination of bad routines, a change in personel and corrupted data files. It is somehow strange that Ul-tech seems to be without a clear management and that it is almost impossible to find out where these research projects and the equipment from the compunds is currently.

The owl projects goal was to create highly mobile anti-nova and anti-armor units, a goal whom was partly reached, but laid to the side due to funding isues and a lack of results. Thats where Ul-tech came in and restarted the project. In 2118 it finished the first prototyps. They series where amptly named The birds of prey.

All in all, the project have to this day created three different VARG models, although it is questionable if they truly can be called VARGs as they lack vaccum capability and they are extremly light. Here follows a brief summary as well as statistics:

Falcon (recon)

The Falcon is a forward recon unit that uses a large copy of the biotech wingpack to be able to rapidly redeploy in most situations. Its main arament is a light coilgun mounted on its left shoulder.

Description: This suit looks like like the ecoskelet that some bugs have, resulting in a light VARG that is somewhat slightly bulkier than a human. There are two big points that sets it off from normal humans thought, one is the large wingpack that it have on its back, the other the rather large gun that is mounted on the suits left shoulder.

VT: VARG

Tech: Hard

CS: 50 km/h

TS: 350 km/h

VS: n/a

Handling: +3

Cost: n/a

Armor: 2 [5]

Weapons: any infantry weapon,

one light coilgun (Accuracy:+1, Damage: 5D10[10]L)

Strength Effect: Pilots strength + 3d10.

Sensor bonus: 3

Life Support: 14 hours (outside of vaccume)

Note: The light coilgun foils to the back of the user during flight, so It can not be used then.

Storm (close assault)

The Storm was built for close assault, and it fits the role perfectly. It is equiped with jumppacks so that it may enter combat fast and easily as well as a holographic defense system to minimize casualties.

Description: The storm is larger than the falcon and is largely humanoid in shape. It have no weapons except for its large arament of melee weapons and a hand mounted flamer. The defense system creates a couple of duplicates of the Storm as well as the weapons its wielding to make it harder for enemys to hit as well as dodge Storms attacks.

VT: VARG

Tech: Hard

CS: 50 km/h / 150 meter leaps

TS: 90 km/h

VS: n/a

Handling: +3

Cost: n/a

Armor: 3 [6]

Weapons: One Heavy Flamer (Accuracy:+5, Damage: 3D10[15]L Burning)

Any infantry weapon, although it often carries melee weapons (adds to the pilots strength when calculating damage)

Strength Effect: Pilots strength + 4d10[4]L.

Sensor bonus: 3

Life Support: 14 hours (outside of vaccume)

Note: The Holographic Defense System adds +2 difficulty to hit in ranged combat, +1 in close combat and +1 to dodge Storms attacks.

Typhoon (heavy support)

The Typhoon is somewhat of an odd number in the owl project, since it was supposed to create fast mobile vheicles, not heavy support units. They managed to create a viable alternetiv that is somewhat slow but non the less mobile enough too follow in the there birds of preys wake.

Description: As with the other Typhoon is mostly humanoid in shape, exept for its backpack and somewhat bulky right hand. The backpack, who is in reality a storage center for three smart missiles and a grenade launcher is mounted on its back (the grenade launcher systems goes up on its left shoulder) and the somewhat bulky arm is a light pulsed plasma cannon.

VT: VARG

Tech: Hard

CS: 40 km/h

TS: 80 km/h

VS: n/a

Handling: +1

Cost: n/a

Armor: 3 [6]

Weapons: pulse plasma cannon (Accuracy:+1, Damage: 5D10[5]L range: 900),

one missile pod with 3 missiles (Accuracy:+3, Damage: 10D10[15]L)

Any infantry weapon

Strength Effect: Pilots strength + 3d10L.

Sensor bonus: 3

Life Support: 14 hours (outside of vaccume)

Authors note: Yepp, thats it. Please, tell me if there is anything that you find wierd or bad or anything....

Overall, not bad designs...Generall, light, mobile, and I could use an APC to get them to battle if need be. A definite advantage over normal VARGs, and I'll definitely be telling our resident tech guru about them...

Two minor problems:

1) +6d10[5] seems a bit much for the Storm's Strength effect, especially given the relatively small size...+5d10 may be a bit better fit.

2) Two weeks survival time? For a small hardtech suit, that means that it has two weeks of food and water, as well as built-in lavatory (the reason traditional hardtech VARGs have so little time is due to this "missing facility"). Combined with the lack of efficiency in a vacuum, how would you get such long-term duration?

Again, great design!

Ayre, pleas have faith ::biggrin

The Stranger and Bane is in this stage only prototypes, but what is important is that they are working prototypes.

Bane (Anti Nova/Anti VARG)

Bane is heavier and more strongly armed than its counterparts in the Owl project. As there is no way that you can anticipiate what powers a Abberant have, Ul-tech developed the MWMS (Multiple Warhead Missile System) to combat them. The Bane have to this day never faced a nova so there can be no telling of how effectiv it is.

Description: As with the other Birds of Prey Bane is largely humanoid, the only thing differing Bane from normal humanoid shape is the large canisters that it have on its shoulder. These holds the MWMS.

VT: VARG

Tech: Hard

CS: 50 km/h

TS: 100 km/h

VS: n/a

Handling: +3

Cost: n/a

Armor: 4 [6]

Weapons: MWMS with 3 payloads (Accuracy:+3, Damage: 10D10[10]L + special)

Strength Effect: Pilots strength + 3d10L.

Sensor bonus: 3

Life Support: 14 hours (outside of vaccume)

Note: The MWMS works on the principle that while a nova might be near invulnerable to one type of damage, they cannot be invulnerable to all. Therefor MWMS fires a wide range of missiles with different warheads against a target. Add one of the following damage types for every hit dice above one from fire, acid, stun damage (from flash bang), EM-disruptor and armor piercing (subtract two from armor) (Everyone of these damages inflicts two levels more of there specific damage together with the normal damage taken by the missiles themself).

Stranger (Sabotage)

The investors of Project Owl soon realised that there is a large, for there part anyway, need for a sabotage/spionage vehicle. Stranger was built to this end, unfortunately it cannot be described as a spionage platform.

Description: Totaly humanoid.

VT: VARG

Tech: Hard

CS: 60 km/h

TS: 110 km/h

VS: n/a

Handling: +3

Cost: n/a

Armor: 2 [3]

Weapons: Sonic Boom (Accuracy:automatic hit if in range,

Damage: 6D10L (ignores armor))

a grenade launcher (armed with EM-disruptors)

Any infantry weapon.

Sensor bonus: 3

Life Support: 14 hours (outside of vaccume)

Note: Sonic boom works in all directions, including friendly units. Its simply a sonic cannon without a direction specification.

I dont know, this last one feels a little slapdash if you ask me...

From now on I take requests, and its not only for weapons (in fact, im growing tired of them ::bigsmile ).

The only thing I ask for is that they should be somehow usefull in a conspiratory manner (I consider the theme for any chronicle involving Ul-tech conspiratory ::bigsmile )

  • 9 months later...

Here is a rundown of Ultech, our favorit shadow corporation ::biggrin :

History: Ultech was started in 1982 as an investment company whos main business ide where to buy the stocks of small start-up companies (mainly those who dealt with reaserch and cutting edge technology) who showed potential, and then simply selling it them when the time was right.

The company truly went of during the 90s dot com craze, making huge amounts of money, and losing little when the crash eventualy came. This where a time of change for the company, as it was totaly bought up by Michael Bragger (the only reference to this individual that exists is an American social security number, his name and his ownership of 100% of Ultechs stocks), and started to expand into the areas of military science as well as other questionable markets.

The comming of the nova age was another upswing for the company as it bought and funded a large amount of the nova startups, (DeVries was one of them, although only to a small amount) as well as getting some large contracts by the Japanese, English and American Goverment, on what is unknown although rumors circulate that they where to "create" novas.

The project was cut short in 2010, with Japan and America both wanting to buy out the "results" (records show that said results is 48 human beings of varying age, sex and background, however no names nor other easy identifying features are revealed in any known records), not openly of course. What became of the results is unknown.

The nova war brought upon bad times for Ultech, and as a result they bought up installations at the most hostiles areas on earth, including the north and the south pole, Siberia, Sahara and in the Atlantic, it was also some uncomfirmed rumors of offworld installations (Mars), but they are probably only rumors.

In the period from the later part of 2000 and until now Ultech have made a consious effort to keep well away from everyone, conducting reaserch on there "hidden" bases around the globe and selling there findings.

It should be noted that Michael Bragger still stands as owner of all of Ultechs stock.
