Aberrant RPG - Body Modifications

It would depend on the mod, but in most cases I'd say yes you could hide them (not sure why you'd want to for some though)... As for Tendril, it's a policy in my games that the player has to grow the tendril/tentacle (free action mind you) when they want to use it for a scene, otherwise it'd be the same as extra limb imo.

Body Modifications are Permanent changes to the character's body & can't just be 'turned off' (unlike Armour). Some (like Tendril) are more easily hidden, but they're still around somewhere when they're not 'extruded' (in theory).

The Mega-Appearance Enhancement 'Mr. Nobody', can't hide gross physical aberrations, but can hide Body Modifications (if the information on Astaroth in Reignofevil.com is anything to go by).

Otherwise you're just gonna' have to Dorm to look normal.

A "tendril of fire" wold be better done by using Claws, Q-Bolt or even TK...Basically, a Body Modification is actual flesh & blood (or whatever the aberrant is made of), not of a different material.

And if it was part of the body, then it could use Mega-Str...

I have to disagree with it being "permanent" in the sense that it can not be retracted, hidden, turned off, ex. It is a Power and not an Aberration, after all. I think by "Permanent," they mean it does not coast Quantum and can be left "on" 24/7 -all year round- if the Nova was inclined.

Saying it is permanent in an uncontrollable fashion seems like the choice of the player, and possible grounds to be defined as a low to high level Aberration, or as a Power Weakness.

Remember that it is an “effects” based game, so restricting the special effect of a power so narrowly really goes against the spirit of the rules.

Body-modifications are permanent, you can't supress/turn off extra health levels, for example. You're wings don't just go away after you're done with them, that'd be Flight with a 'wings' effect. Body Modification is the only power that doesn't have a minimum quantum rating/power level (Miscellaneous Quantum Power). Costs nothing to use because "it's like using their own arms and legs", and can't have extra's bought for them because there is no next level to up the xp costs.

One thing to keep in mind is that unless you're talking about something like Extra Limbs or Wings/Patagia, many body modifications can easily be concealed from casual inspection with a little forethought and the right clothes and/or accessories. Do you have gill slits on the sides of your neck? Wear a scarf or turtleneck shirt. Do you have multiple hearts beating away in your ribcage? Avoid close hugs and doctors with stethoscopes. Do you have small fangs? Keep your lips together when you smile, and tell the curious that you've just had some dental work done.

As far as the Tendril question goes, it's my understanding that they either retract (in the case of physical tendrils) or vanish (in the case of energy tendrils) if the nova isn't actively using them.

Body modifications: Think Nightcrawler's tail or Toad's tongue - even Doc Oc's tentacles could be rolled up as body mods. As for the energy ones vanishing... Not sure I'm terribly keen on that. Depends on how generous the GM is feeling I guess.

In the game I run one of the Players has a character loosely based on the powers of the Venom/Carnage symbiotes from Marvel Comics. In order to simulate certain aspects of the powers he has a number of bodymods (Tendril, Chromatophores, Adhesive Grip). I allow him to retract the tendril, and he's able to switch the chromatophores and sticky fingers on and off (otherwise it really limits what he can do).

It's really up to the individual character and the GM as to whether or not the mods can be concealed or not. Some people might like playing a character with permanent wings (Angel, X-Men), whilst others may prefer being able to shuck them off and grow a new pair when they needs em (like Shen from the Authority can).

Let's face it, the way most Players are they'll be howling monstrosities via Taint sooner or later. Let em have the option of concealment for their actual powers, I say.
