Trinity RPG - The Black Armband

Recommended Posts

I have a player running a latent character who's interested in joining ISRA. He has met with a few clairsentients and knows about the black armbands.

However, he sees the armbands as insulting and, well, very wrong. I was scrambling as to how the clear he talked to would try to explain it to him.

The basis of the character's problem with it is why people would just accept it, and why people would, as he put it "advertise to the world that you're just planning to die"

any ideas on how best to explain this?

Right - the way you play clearsentience affects this deeply. The way I run my game, things are not predestined, but clears are occasionally capable of moving their point of perception (their present) forward along the timeline. So what the clears see is happening and the past at that new point of perception HAS happened already. The choices that people might make in the everyday present have been made and the present's future is the new present's past. In other words - it's not predestination, but it might as well be. What's seen in visions cannot be changed, because it has happened. What's NOT seen in visions where the meat of the clearsentients jobs are done.

So I don't see the armbands as advertising to people that they're not going to fight against an avoidable death, but rather as a warning to others that they've already experienced the most traumatic event of their lives - they're mourning the passing of blissful ignorance - and others should be aware that they may not act as would otherwise be expected (even in Clearsentient circles).

likewise, many clears probably view it as simply a curtesy to others. Most times the events that clears have a vision about are at least intense and often (as is the case with one's own death) very violent & or traumatic. if it is the latter case, some clears might wear the band as a warning to those around them, for though they may have forknowledge of their own death they may not have any idea about others.

i also agree it depends largely on how you run clears, though in my case i would assume that such a vision is rarely, if ever a "maybe" kind of event. the totality, such as it is, has a profound effect on what clairsentients do, and in this case it would likely be guiding them irrevocably towards their own demise. almost a religious sort of "the lord works in mysterious ways" sorta thing. anyways, just my 2 cents.

Black armbands? ::blink

I take it from the posts, that the armbands mark clears, who have seen their own death. But I don't recall reading about them anywhere. Are they mentioned in the official books, and if so where?

Check out the Trinity Player's Guide if you're lucky enough to have snagged a copy of it somewhere, folks. It's got a 5-point Flaw called "Visions of Death" that reflects this "predestined death/very likely to die" scenario, which isn't limited to ISRAns! ::crazy

What an effective way for an ISRAn to get back at that annoying/obnoxious person in his/her life... "You know, you're going to die horribly in a few months or so, and here's how it'll happen. And no, there's nothing you can do to change it... Enjoy what little is left of your pathetic life." ::devil

::laugh "Oh, yeah? Well.. um.. so are you!"

Here's an amusing thought... What happens when two sufficiently ticked-off ISRAns end up delivering that line to each other? And at the same time!? Makes you wonder if Otha doesn't deliberately pick out the more emotionally mature folks from the masses of clairsentient latents to dunk in the ISRAn Prometheus Tank, and lets the other get snapped up by the Legions/Ministry/Orgotek/whoever... ::devil
