Adventure! RPG - Manor House

If you get the chance, take a look at Manor House on PBS. I'm not sure if it's been broadcast outside of the U.S., but it's a reality series (sort of) set in an Edwardian manor house with a family of five and their fourteen servants. It's a lot like Gosford Park or Upstairs, Downstairs, only it's more detailed. For Adventure!, you get a strong lesson in turn-of-the-century English social relationships between the haves and the have-nots that work for them, so you can really get that condescending frown towards your footman just right.

We got it here in Australia over a year ago, I think it was a rerun but I can't remember. It's worth a watch but, the younger members of the staff always make it seem like some lame soap opera, the rest of the people there make the show/documentary/experiment work. The kid talking to his teacher about station deserves a belting hehehe.

heh, ::laugh couldn't have said it better myself Ayre. it is neat though and quite a bit of information can be gleaned out of it, once you ignore the drama. which might i add, isn't over the top. it's not an american show so people aren't trying to kill/slap/maim each other or revolt against the masters, eat anything disgusting, etc. it's mostly just a bit of romance and the stress of trying to adapt to 19th century life.

Hey! The Brits started that stuff, thank you! ::sneaky2

Read: I am aware that other countries were doing it first, but their shows tend to get translated over the most...And some of their daytime shows have nudity! ::nervous In fact, I could argue that this is a show the Brits copied from us (there was a series of an American family placed in a house that was in the early 1900's just last year; also great!)...

Disclaimer: Brits are generally good people...Unfortunately, as Monty Python has warned us, they are very strange birds.... ::bigsmile

Bloody hell.

::angry

I hate yes and no answers..... ::tongue

The second (2001) and fourth (2003) series ("Manor House") were British and New Zealand, respective. There was also a (third series (2002)) "Pioneer House" that was American. With a fifth series on the way...

However, the first series ("1900 House" (1999), the one I was referencing) was made by Wall to Wall Televsion (Channel 4, British), AND WNET Channel 13 (American), ie, it's made on both sides of the pond, like a lot of PBS shows are...Follow that? ::sleeping

Basically, I was sorta right (American and prior series) while being sorta wrong ::sneaky2 ...

Sorta fun doing the checking, actually...If for no other reason than to show me that I track some really weird stuff ::hehe ....

Side Note 1: My least favorite argument (not here, but when TV is discussed) is that American TV gets blamed for a lot of stuff that other nations do worse (sex and violence), but that American TV gets called "base and a time-waster", whereas other nations are, by default, "great and educational". Sorry about the knee-jerk reaction...

Side Note 2: "Trading Spaces"??? EW!

Side Note 3: "1900 House" was great because of the fun everyone had doing it, especially the kids' reactions, which ran the gamut from "Yes!" to "Do I have to?"

All the info, none of the drama! ::tongue

How about a smiley that's holding a sign saying "No, I'm a cat."

I bet some people would never post text again!

This was going around the e-mail circuit at some point:

The most useful phrase one can learn in Russian (after \"Ya loobloo peat vodku\" - I love to drink vodka) has to be \"Nyet, Ya koshka\" or \"No I'm a cat.\" It provides an excellent answer to almost any question asked of you....Do you know where the kiosk is? No, I'm a cat. Would you give me the pleasure of joining me for dinner tonight? No, I'm a cat. Did you remember to do the dishes? No, I'm a cat.

Try it out for a few days and I promise you'll get asked fewer questions!

Meow, I say.
