phoenix
The power of a nova/aberrant is such that it was no big surprise when one took out a good part of North America. But how did the guy take himself with it? I thought novas were never subject to the effects of their own powers.

But how did the guy take himself with it? I thought novas were never subject to the effects of their own powers. 3 Possibles.1) Who says he did? I would imagine that those who claimed he died didn't observe it. Similarly, the people who had a really good view of ground zero didn't live. And of course with his family dead, he warped out anc became the Colony. ::smokin 2) Taint 10. ::crazy 3) (Most likely IMHO) Eclipsol. The group that went in sounds fairly similar to the Directive. The effect sounds pretty close to powers running amuck. The people who know for sure what happened are dead. And the ones who might suspect are unlikely to admit that they screwed up bad enough to take out several states and the USA's status as a world power. ::shocked
Joseph
Ian Turner (our own Soltares), had a story some time back wherein the Taint Zone is Wycoff. He just mutated into another form. That could go a long way in explaining the continual appearance of sub aberrants in the region: he's spawning. ::tongue -Joseph
madcat82
The explenation for why the zone is still there is actualy in America Offline. The official explenation anyway.

brilyn
I thought novas were never subject to the effects of their own powers. I'd pretty much agree with the othere. Once you hit Taint 10, all bets are off. Hell, I'd say Taint 8+, once you start getting the SERIOUS aberrations. In the Terragen book, they have abilities that remove your immunity to your own powers. It's possible that he had a high-power version of that running permanently, while burning his last willpower point on the UBER max that he must have done.Justa thought. T-dev
I sort of put this into the category that MtA has for dying mages. At death, a mage can do a more powerful then he could normally do.Wycoff drew on his quantum powers as well as his taint to blow up. In I think it is Year One, it talk about another nova basically exploding from too much taint too. So I just see this as a bigger version of that. I always pictured Wycoff as a Quantum 6+ nova & that would do it.
Finbar
Actually, I was sort of under the impression that there was some kind of intelligence there...One of the order books (and I'm thinking Ministry for some reason), points out that an intelligence has been detected in the area, but they haven't been able to pin it down...Of course, that would explain a number of irregularities in the area....FR
Psionycx
That's just leftover Harvesters still living underneath the Blight Zone. Their continued presence preserves the taint levels, at least in the center. The areas farther afield have mostly recovered.Remember that the whole Wycoff story was written before Aberrant came out. Bate's early vision included the idea that the really BIG powers were harder to control and that the novas didn't have perfect control of their abilities. This got referenced again in Aberrant: Year One, where a nova is depicted as losing control of their powers and exploding. This is not to say that Wycoff wasn't trying to do something else, nor does it rule out that he might still exist in some altered state. But most likely he simply tried to channel a motherload of quantum and ended up blasting taint across the midewest.
Alex Green
Thus adding a 4th possibility, really big time botch. ::blink
Psionycx
Precisely.I have to assume that if you're daring enough to try and use quantum powers to do something really BIG, then you have to accept that if you botch it it could be really BAD! phoenix
Maybe he deliberately used all his health levels for quanta, then fueled it all into the explosion.
Dormammu
I like the one with mutating to "the Zone" the best. But why should he spawn?Just imagine: Trinity Ab´s are not out of game when reaching Taint of 10.(That´´s said in the Corebook somehere.) Now imagine Taint 35+. Could those goons really be his "aberrations"?
Ayre el KaBeer
I always saw it as a case of "If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me!" or maybe he'd grown attached to some or all his followers and when they died he didn't care any more, so KABLOWEE!!!. ProfPotts
If we presume the explosion Wycoff was something to do with Marshal Jeb Wycoff & the Harvesters (& their pseudo-Christian cult) I guess I'd go along with the idea of 'left-over' Harvesters (& flunkies) wandering around the 'Zone doing their damdest to keep Taint levels as high as possible. On the other hand, I love the idea that he is the 'Zone - that one was a beauty! ::smile
