Aberrant: Stargate Universe - SG1: Mission to Truskat (P3Y-709)

Recommended Posts

March 1st 2005:

A week had passed since Waki's surprise inclusion to the ranks of the Specialists and although the team was officially back on duty no one expected to be called to the Briefing room for another week or so. Hawke had been assured they would have at least a couple weeks to work on integrating the specialists into a cohesive team. Unfortunately situations have a way of coming up and interfering in well laid plans.

Carter stood in front of the whiteboard writing down information:

Ba'al

Mot

Astarte

Population 1500

Devout

Harkin

Tel'nak

Winter

As the team was finally assembled she stopped writing and turned to face everyone.

"We have a situation and you are the best option to resolve it." It was a bit unlike Carter not to start with pleasantries... Hawke and those familiar with her mannerisms knew that meant it was serious indeed.

"SG17, Major Lorne's team, is trapped on P3Y-709, called Truskat by the locals. The world is part of Ba'al's domain and the people are devout followers. For whatever reason they seem to follow him out of true religious fervor rather than fear. That has made things difficult for the major. He and his men are in hiding in the hills surrounding the valley where the Stargate lies. The gate is guarded by a contingent of Jaffa. Nothing that the Major couldn't handle, but he's suggested that we might be able to turn these people against Ba'al. That's where you come in."

She looked around the table as if measuring the individuals there. "It seems that the people believe that Ba'al protects them from the evil god Mot. In reality Mot is one of Ba'al's under lords, he is in residence on the planet and occasionally abducts people and torments them. Ba'al makes an appearance once in a great while and cast's down the evil god as a show to the people. Ba'al's high priest is a man named Harkin, he is in on the joke according to what major Lorne has found out. Most times it is the high priest that rescues the victims in the name of Ba'al."

"Your mission is to kill Mot. He's about as nasty as they get, and killing him in such a way that it was obviously not Ba'al's doing should weaken his hold on the planet." She let that sink in. So far the specialists had not been sent out specifically to kill an enemy even a Goa'uld.

"There are two complications, "Astarte is another of Ba'al's under lords and also visits the planet regularly on Ba'al's behalf. There is a naquadah mine there and it is very important to him. She is sent to pick up shipments and deliver orders. She is expected to arrive soon. Her first Prime Tel'nak has come ahead to announce her pending visit. Second, it's winter there, and Major Lorne is running low on supplies. One of his men has frostbite on his right foot and I am hoping Yseult might be able to save it if you can rendezvous quickly enough."

"Questions?"

Ryan nodded. "We're to go in and vanquis Mot in a fashion that leaves no doubt it wasn't don by Ba'al, save SG17 before exposure takes them out, and we've got a schedlue to keep." He looked around. "Is Astarte a mission objective as well, should she be there?"

He was running through the list of equippent he'd need for this, and how best to form this team.

Aradia held up her hand. She hadn't had a chance to interact with Carter since the situation with Wakiki, but the young acrobat seemed to have calmed down somewhat, and was keeping it fairly professional at the moment, to Carter's surprised relief. She nodded slightly at her, indicating that Aradia should ask her question.

"Do we need to be subtle about who we are, our abilities, and all that stuff like we've been told to do before? Or are we just going in, weaponry and mutant powers blazing?"

Charlie bit his lip, gauging the elements of the situation in front of them. Effectively hostile locals, Jaffa forces in place, and additional Goa'uld arriving, not to mention the stranded SG-17. About the Jaffa...

"Are we to presume that SG-17 HAS been detected, or do we have a window of opportunity before the Goa'uld and Jafa catch on?"

"The locals are aware of their presence, but the harshness of the winter there is hampering their ability to hunt our people. If there is a break in the weather however, I'm sure the locals know those hills better than our people. It would get uncomfortable for Major Lorne very quickly."

Yseult sat gracefully, legs crossed as she listened attentively to the mission parameters and her team-mates questions. Brushing back a strand of sable hair obscuring an eye, she stifled a melancholy sigh. Despite the renewed intimacy with her husband, the formerly blond doctor was afraid they might be growing more apart than before.

Her and Aradia's mutual lessons had left their distinct mark on her. With Aradia's help, Yseult had achieved her goal of being able to reshape her physical appearance into an approximation of her original one. Admittedly, she looked more like a too attractive cousin - she could only alter her appearance so far - but it was close enough for her, and François’, purposes. However, her method of manipulating biology and Aradia's way of altering her own physical structure were distinctly different in the fine details, if not in base effect. There had been... consequences she hadn't been able to mitigate or foresee adequately.

Now, the already impressive beauty of the body foisted upon her by Me'chello's device was refined into exquisite perfection, with a naturally elegant grace to match it. It was something else that those in Cheyenne had to grow used to, after her initial transformation, then Aradia's enhanced attractiveness. And the changes went beyond the merely superficial. Her statuesque figure possessed a strength to rival the peak of human achievement, despite its shapely svelteness. It was quite odd to be stronger than her husband, though she had to admit, it was pleasant to be able to support her growing children with such ease.

What troubled her the most was how the stress of physical metamorphosis had increased her physiology to superhuman levels. She barely ever got winded anymore, temperature extremes weren't even a nuisance, and most disturbingly, no longer required sleep or sustenance anymore. François seemed at ease with it, but after driving her husband to exhaustion after a night of passion, it was an effort to simply stay in bed with him, content with the warmth of his body.

But all this was a concern she intended to keep to herself; it had no place at work. Still, to some who knew her well, they could see the apprehension concealed behind her smooth expression.

She gave Carter a gracious nod. "His foot, he will not lose it," she stated with calm confidence, her velvety, accented soprano holding a new, rich timbre. Even if I have to build him a new one - I believe this is possible.

Wakiki was troubled. Not by the mission; as far as he was concerned, this was nothing he really understood or cared about. He'd figure out things as he went along, especially if they were throwing him into this with little training. Honestly, he trusted more in Ryan and Aradia to keep him informed and alive.

No, what bothered him was Yseult. He found his eyes creeping to her again and again, with an attraction that he couldn't deny. He wasn’t troubled by being attracted to a woman; he was troubled because he’d felt this kind of draw before – the night he’d realized he loved Aradia. He shot a glance at Aradia again, looking at her perfect features – features he’d assumed that seemed perfect to him because of the depth for his feelings for her. Now, he was faced with another woman who had a similarly perfected face. He was confused and uncomfortable.

Still, even if he was attracted to this other woman, there were feelings for Aradia that he just didn’t have for this doctor-lady. That wasn’t the issue. He just had a lot of questions to work out.

“Mr. Izumi?” Carter’s voice pulled him out of his reverie. “I know you’re the new guy, so if you have any questions, I’d like to hear them.”

Grateful once again that he’d gotten a handle on this mind-reading thing, Wakiki nodded. “Why don’t we take one of the spaceships for air support? I’m sure that we could find them quicker with space sensors and stuff.”

The question reflected that Wakiki didn’t really have an idea of the Way Things Worked.

Carter nodded, "It's a good question, and I have and equally good answer." She smiled to take the potential sting out of the following words. "7.5 billion dollars. That's how much it costs to make a Prometheus class vessel. We only have a trio of ships right now, one given to us by the Asgard which our government and scientists won't allow to leave Earth orbit because it is irreplaceable. One is currently on it's way to the Pegasus galaxy with supplies for Atlantis, the other is the Prometheus, which as you know was almost lost. It is also in the hands of our scientists trying to download and learn as much from the Asgard core installed aboard it as possible."

"In other words, they are a very finite resource and as much as we value you and the other SGC personnel, we have plenty of soldiers, but only 3 ships, none of which are available at the moment." It was plain that Carter understood how callous that might sound, but having been one of the first members of SG1 she would rather say it plain that try and sugar coat it.

  • 3 weeks later...

Seeing the acceptance of the military team members and the appreciation of the others for being given the truth Carter nodded decisively.

"Good, since there are no further questions then get moving you have a team to save."

Carter hated this part. It was one thing when she had been the one going through the gate into danger day in and day out. It was another to be the one staying behind and worrying about their safety.

The team made their way down to the armory, got their gear ready and assembled in the gate room. Major Hawke formed up the team and ordered them. "There will be Jaffa waiting for us on the other side of the gate. I'll toss a pair of flash-bangs through as soon as the wormhole forms, then we'll follow them through in 5 seconds. Wait till I give the 'GO'."

Seeing everyone's nod of agreement he signaled Walter to dial the gate. There was a bit more tension in the air than normal as the gate locked the symbols one at a time. There was squad of heavily armed guards focused on the gate in the event anything tried to come through when they dialed, including the heavy 50 cal anti-tank gun mounted in the room.

When the wormhole formed with his customary rush, Ryan tossed the grenades immediately and started counting with one hand raised. When he reached 5 he charged through with the other team members following.

On the other side, most of the Jaffa guards were reeling from the effects of the explosions. The one guard manning the big staff cannon had been shielded from the flash by the screen around his weapon. He was bringing the cannon to bear as the team rushed through.

Please give me Init rolls and post your first actions accordingly. The guard goes at 9. I don't expect this to be a long combat since only the guy manning the Cannon is active. However, getting hit by the cannon would be very detrimental to even a nova's health so it deserves rolls.

Charlie hurtled through the gate, and as he saw the guard bringing the cannon to bear, he gathered up a mass of air and with a light gesture, 'threw' it at the Jaffa. His free hand went back to the P-90 that he was carrying for backup firepower, and he added shots for good measure.

As the wormhole stabilized, the team's BDUs paling under the bluish-white light, Yseult flexed a mental muscle, an invisible field of kinetic force surrounding her. She flipped her short, glossy, raven-black braid over her shoulder, pressed her full lips into a tight line, then strode smoothly through the tingling miasma of the StarGate, her Zat'ni'katel held up and steady in both hands.

Sure her telekinetic field would protect her from the majority of Staff-fire, the flawlessly beautiful doctor glided forward to give cover to anyone else coming through the StarGate. The Staff-Cannon filled her with more concern. She reached out with her telekinetic grasp and tried to rip the Staff-Cannon out of the embankment with crushing force.

If the unpleasantness at the bar had taught Aradia nothing else, it was that her abilities were more adaptable than she'd given them credit for. Before, she had been limiting her transitions to total ones - animals, or other people. But the instinctive shift had opened her eyes to the true flexibility of her powers.

She glanced nervously over at Wakiki for a moment, and he could tell that she wasn't too far behind him in the fear department.. mostly because she was never truly ready to go running into battle, but also because he hadn't really seen her do any shifting yet. She didn't do much of it except on the field, and it had still only been a short time. So far, the most he'd seen her do was change the color of her hair. But she heard the shouts from ahead as people began to charge in, and took a deep breath, pushing it to the back of her mind. If it weirded him out, there was nothing she could do about it now. He would adapt.. or he wouldn't. She tried to give him a reassuring smile, but it still came out a bit weak.

"Just let us do the ass-kicking, okay? Your powers don't swing that way so far. No playing hero, and you'll be fine."

Then she took a deep breath and flexed that hidden muscle, and her skin began to shift, segmenting out to form scales that covered the majority of her body, focusing on the exposed or more vulnerable areas first. Visibly, they crept along most of her arms, covered her neck and throat completely, and touched partially up onto her cheeks and forehead. She didn't have Yseult's forcefield abilities, but hopefully the self-generated armor would help protect her from any fire blast.

Then, without glancing at Wakiki's reaction, she grimaced, gripped her weapon tighter, and moved through the gate.

Wakiki watched Aradia with wide eyes. No one had prepped him for this and his training, while thorough, hadn't been enough. After she disappeared into the wormhole, he whispered, "I'm dating Mystique." It was hard to tell if he judged that good or bad by his tone.

Swallowing, he moved forward.

24 Ryan at cannon guard
18 Waki holding action and hanging back
15 Charlie at cannon guard
14 Yseult ripping the cannon out of it's place
10 Aradia Zatting a guard

As the team came running through the gate Ryan was in the lead and squeezed off a burst at the guard manning the cannon. Because of the shield he did not hit the man but he did splatter the crystal with bullets which left it cracked and hard for him to see through.

Only a second behind Ryan the second man through the gate was Charlie going at a strong pace. His 'bolt' finished the job Ryan started and took out the shield protecting the guard. His follow up burst with the P90 sent sparks flying off the man's chest armor, but several bullets made it through sending the man crashing to the ground.

Almost simultaneously Yseult took position and grabbed the gate with her telekentic power and sent it flying. She didn't quite crush it as intended, but it was no longer on the battlefield.

Just behind her Aradia charged through looking a bit like Mystique and zatted one of the guards trying vainly to aim his weapon at the new comers. Five other Jaffa stood, or rather stumbled about. Luckily they were disoriented from the blast of the flash-bang grenades. That left Waki still looking a bit uncertain about the situation but bravely trying to hold it together in his first combat.

Ryan nodded to the others and slung his Rifle. "take them down."

To emphasize his point, he slung his gun and lashed out at the closest one with his fist, looking to take them down fast, but leave them alive for questioning.

Forcing herself to respond to Ryan's orders instead of listening to her doctor's instincts, Yseult leveled her Zat'ni'kate at one of the reeling Jaffa and squeezed out a pulse of blue-white energy. Then she stepped tentatively forward, intent on tending to the Jaffa that Ryan had shot. She was a doctor, despite everything else she was.

Wakiki almost ended up ingloriously killed - by the Stargate. Upon finding himself in combat, he had a perfectly natural reaction: he froze. After a second, he stumbled backwards, failing to remember that the gate was one-way and entering the wrong end was fatal. Thankfully, the field had popped out of existence behind him, and he merely shuffled into the area behind the gate.

Then he walked off the ledge the Gate rested on.

That jarred him out of his fugue. He stood up and moved cautiously forward, his zat locked in a death grip. He didn't fire - couldn't. Those were people out there. His eyes feel on the man cut down by Charlie, and he had to turn away. Wakiki wasn't 'macho' by any term of the definition, but he still had enough man-pride to choke back the vomit. There wasn't quite enough to stop his eyes from 'watering' though.

He hung back, staring away from the fighting behind him.

The mop up was easy enough. After only a handful of seconds the rest of the Jaffa were down and unconscious. In minutes they were disarmed and bound, their weapons all in a pile. Unfortunately, there was no way short of interrogation to determine when these men were scheduled to be relieved or to check in with their superiors. The team could have only seconds to clear out of the area or hours, there was no way to be sure which.

Looking around the team could see that the gate sat in a valley with hills sweeping out to either side and off toward the horizon. Not having a good perspective it was hard to tell, but it seemed that the valley was U shaped with the gate at the bottom of the U. According to Carter the SG team was hiding out in the hills somewhere to the right of the gate as you exit it. The valley itself was mostly farmland but that was all buried under several feet of snow. The hills were mostly forested, but because of their elevation, anyone watching the from the hills would have easily been able to see it open and the flash of the grenades. You arrived sometime around sunset, but it's very dark thanks to the heavy clouds and the sun, even if you could have seen it it would already be behind the hills. Unfortunately, there is currently a break in the weather and the snow is not falling which means your tracks will be clearly visible as you leave the area, and it means that your fire fight was probably noticed.

Aradia glanced over at Wakiki, observing his reaction to the fight and remembering all to clearly the horror she'd felt during her first battles. She stepped up in front of him, her voice dropping down to a low murmur as she tried to catch his attention without drawing Ryan's focus from the task at hand.

"Hey - focus. It's okay. They're just zats.. like stun guns. Just.. don't fire more than once at the same guy, and they'll be fine.. okay?"

C'mon, babe.. you can handle this. I know it.

Despite the oddness of Aradia's current appearance, it was still her beautiful, liquid brown eyes gazing up at him, concern and fear etched in her face. She gently wrapped her fingers around the hand that held the zat and adjusted his grip until he was holding it properly.

"Time to go. You're okay. C'mon."

At least someone had confidence in him, even if he wasn't feeling it too much at the moment.

"We have to move. That was likely seen by people we'd rather not have noticed."

He looked around. "Aradia, I'm going to need you to fly ahead in the form of a white Hawk. Wakiki, Yseult, you're with me. I won't be able to fire, so I expect you both to keep a ready Eye for trouble. Charlie, you watch our six. We're going to be doing NOE flying, trying to avoid being seen and detected by other means."

He knew flying men and women was far from inconspicuous, but it was all he had that would help them avoid leaving tracks.

"Pardonnez-moi," Yseult whispered softly before stunning the Jaffa manning the cannon-emplacement. She efficiently removed the mushroomed slugs embedding him, sutured his wounds, then rejoined the others. The Jaffa were barely susceptible to infection.

"If you are preferring Ryan, I am being able to support Wakiki with my telekinetic ability while you are carrying me," the statuesque doctor suggested. "It will be less cumbersome and leave you better able to defend yourself, yes?"

The major quickly considered, then nodded. "Very well, climb on." Ryan turned his back to Yseult, crouching slightly.

Yseult's cool expression was momentarily marred by a faint frown - she hardly found this decorous - but she hopped up onto his back after only a brief hesitation. Her slender arms went over his shoulders and her shapely legs clung to his waist with a surprising, if not inhuman, strength.

From her perch high on Ryan's back, Yseult glanced towards Wakiki standing next to Aradia. "Wakiki, are you being prepared? I am assuring you, you will not be dropped." Wakiki suddenly felt... something around him, somewhat similar to the pressure of being underwater, but he could still move freely.

Nothing made Wakiki quite so nervous as the man big enough to snap him like a dried twig announcing he'd be carrying Wakiki under an arm while flying through the air. "Oh, sure, feel free to take that gram of pride I had left there, Major..."

Yseult's suggestion wasn't much more comforting. As was normal, Wakiki hid his discomfort in mockery. "Doctor! Really! You shouldn't do this in front of my girlfriend!" Before she could respond, Wakiki looked at Ryan and said, "Oh, uh, sorry, sir. She isn't really my girlfriend, not on mission." He turned back to Yseult and stage-whispered behind a hand, "Yes she is!"

Aradia nodded at Ryan, and her lips twitched slightly in amusement at Wakiki's responses, though when he glanced back over at her he could still see the quiet concern hidden in her expression. But she shrugged slightly, taking a couple steps back to distance herself in case of any accidental shifting mishaps.

"That's alright.. I trust Yseult. She's got a husband to answer to."

She winked at Yse.. then she shifted, her body morphing down in size and adapting to the shape of the hawk Ryan had requested, though the wings and feathers that coated her avian predator's body were still colored the same shades as her hair and skin. She seemed to realize this, for she shook once, and then twice, like a bird would do to shake water from it's feathers after being caught in the rain. It reminded Wakiki of the way she'd shook her hair out the first time she'd shown him her abilities, as he'd watched it change color in front of him. On the second shake, the feathers rippled slightly and turned a soft white color with just a few traces of brown to make it look more natural, allowing her to blend in with the background as Ryan had intended.

She hopped once, twice, and then fluttered up in Wakiki's direction. Girlfriend or not, he responded the way anyone in their right mind would to having a bird fly at them for the first time ever.. he flung an arm up in reflex to shield his face. And then, he felt something amazing. He felt her land gently on his forearm the way a hawk would for a falconer, sharp talons gently pressing against his skin to hold her there while still managing not to harm him. She ruffled her feathers again slightly, looked at him with eyes that were bird-shaped now, but still the same brown color as Aradia's. Even as a bird she was stunning, like a nature photographer's dream subject with every feather in place and just the right air of dangerous regality one would hope to capture in an image for National Geographic. She nipped affectionately and painlessly with her beak at the new specialist's ear.. and then she took off, flying high into the sky overhead, circling once or twice to get her bearings before she took off into the sky ahead of them.

Wakiki watched Aradia shift with widening eyes. He'd known what she could do, but seeing the full range of her skill was just amazing. After she'd abandoned her perch and flown away, his head twisted to watch her go, mouth open in awe. "Wow," he murmured. "Even as a bird, she's hot."

It took him a second to hear what he said. "Huh, I probably shouldn't say stuff like that. Especially since I feel like I just made it to first base with a bird." I may have to talk to her about this. Just to get some... assurances.

He looked at Ryan. "We should get going, right? You're not going to let her fly off alone, are you?"

Ryan chuckled, then nodded. "Of course not. Let's go." he took flight with Yseult on his back as she carried Wakiki, and charlie bringing up the rear. They flew low, no more than fifteen feet off the ground to avoid detection. He looked down at Wakiki and focused his thoughts, hoping the young man would pick up on it. "Scan ahead for signs of life in the general area where the team should be. Let's not fly in totally blind."

The team flew ahead slowed by the need to dodge the occasional snow covered tree hiding against the white of the snow covered ground. As the team moved along the base of the hills to the east it was hard to not appreciate the beauty. The scene looked like something out of an old Christmas movie from the 1940s. No one would have been surprised to see Bing Crosby leaning against a tree smoking a pipe, or to see Santa come sailing over the closest hill in his sleigh.

Unfortunately the beauty was deceptive. It was just below freezing and Jaffa with staff weapons could be hiding behind any of those trees or snowbanks.

((I need a perception + awareness roll from everyone and a telepathy roll from Wakiki.))

Wakiki was soon envying his girlfriend for more than just her beauty; those feathers looked really warm. Up here in the air, he was freezing. Still he kept his eyes and his mind open, hoping to spot the danger before it shot him or anyone on his team.

Clinging to Ryan's back, she had to admonish him to slow down to a degree, she couldn't move Wakiki nearly as swiftly as he could fly. Holding Wakiki aloft with her telekinetic ability was not a kin to pulling him along by an invisible tether. Instead, moving him through the air was a wholly independent of her position, relying solely on his. Thankfully, with her intuitive sense for space and distance, she was able to keep him in a steady positive on her flank.

Unfortunately, with her focus split, she wasn't able to keep a sharp eye on the terrain passing below and around them.

Ryan's heightened senses were in overdrive with the falling snow, as he searched both for danger and for any sign of the other team.

The team had only flown east for a few minutes, just a few miles in fact when Aradia, Wakiki and Ryan all spotted a light in the trees about 3/4ths of the way up one of the hills. It disappeared and reappeared rhythmically for a moment in a classic S.O.S. Judging by the terrain and the position of the light and the trees, someone who knows Morse code has seen you and signaled. Given the viewing conditions, you guys could be the only ones who could spot that light and only the extremely good perception of the three Specialists were the reason you spotted it. But then they knew you were coming and know that you are who you are.

A careful approach revealed the missing SG team as expected. Major Lorne was particularly pleased with the resupply. "Major Hawke, your timing is great. We are running very low on ammo after that last encounter. We put down a Jaffa patrol about an hour ago that stumbled on our last hiding place."

This new place was actually pretty nice. Lorne's SG team had holed up in a small cave in the hillside and were sheltered from the wind and snow at least. They even had a good fire going inside concealed by a bend in the cave. They might not have ammo, but they did have coffee and it smelled good.

Ryan was happy that the team was alright. "Heard you were having a little winter party Major Lorne, I figured we'd come join you."

his geniality was meant to show a camraderie between the teams. He looked to him and nodded. "I take it your wounded is near the fire?" He nodded to Yesult and knew she'd handle up on helping the man."

"Aside ammo reserves being low, can you give me an overview of you're unit's readiness?"

Yseult nodded back at Ryan, then turned a cool, professional smile on Major Lorne. The Major blinked. Being part of the StarGate Program gave one a high tolerance for the unusual and the impossible, still Yseult's new, raven-haired beauty was a remarkable sight to behold. Her skill in medical matters was even more wondrous.

"Please, you will be leading me to the casualty*, yes?" Yseult asked confidently in her smooth soprano. "He is being in good hands, now."

"Of course, Doctor DL, right this way. And thank-you for arriving so quickly. We put him near the fire to give him what comfort we could." Behind his tight, military bearing, Yseult to could the relief in the set of his shoulders.

Yseult followed Major Lorne then knelt gracefully by her patient's side. Her face was calm, controlled, though her faint smile wasn't unfriendly. "Hello, am I being Doctor Yseult Dionne-Langlois. Who are you being and can you be telling me how long you are having your symptoms?" As she began to take her case history, she unwrapped the coverings on his foot.

Other than her nostrils flaring, Yseult kept her expression unchanging. The extent of his frostbite was quite severe, the flesh a waxy white and hard to the touch, save for a few faint traces of purple-blue. She was reasonably sure once his skin started to be rewarmed, the blood-blisters would swell and necrosis would set in, the skin turning black and dead.

"This is not being good. Fortunately, I am believing I can restore full function to your extremity." She reached out with infinitely fine tendrils of telekinetic force, her own cells shivering in biological sympathy.

"I'm Corporal Chapman ma'am." His voice wasn't strained much.

The soldier inhaled to scream with the sudden intense return of feeling to his foot, but Major Lorne clamped a hand over the man's mouth. Chapman quickly regained control of himself and when Maj. Lorne removed his hand the man spoke, "Sorry sir, that was unexpected."

The man wiggled his foot in amazement and looked wonderingly at Yseult, "Doc, I don't know how to thank you. I figured I'd be wearing a rubber foot for the rest of my life. Holy crap! I'm goin running first thing when I get home..." He thought for a second then ammended his comment, "Scratch that. I'm going to get about 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep then I'll get a big breakfast and lounge around a while, THEN I'll go running."

He started to hug his savior, but pulled up short looking at Yseult's too perfect beauty and large violet eyes in the firelight. "Uh, seriously, thanks." Now the man looked a bit uncomfortable afraid he might have offended.

Major Lorne, one of the veterans of the program and plenty used to the Specialists by now just chuckled and slapped the man on the back. "You'll be doing plenty of running on the way back to the gate soon enough. Just don't go stepping into running water this time alright? You might not have noticed, but it's too cold out here for that."

The man, now put at ease by the banter just chucked and smiled happily at his healthy foot and began drying his sock and boot over the fire.

---

Afterward, Lorne stepped aside with the specialists to give his report. Looking to Hawke he began to speak, "Major, you've got your work cut out for you. This valley is like a big horseshoe, but sitting right at the opening of the valley is a big pyramid fortress. I don't think it's a ship, looks like it's made of stone, but it's big and it's got a commanding view of the entire valley. A snakehead named Mot is holed up in there. He's about as bad as they come. He takes victims from among the locals every so often and tortures them just for the fun of it and leaves their broken bodies for the relatives to bury. He's got a hundred Jaffa at least in that fortress. We tried to get info on the layout but the only locals that have been inside didn't come out alive, and when we offered to help them they turned on us. Seems they are convinced Ba'al is a good guy and that we are in league with Mot. So sayeth Ba'al."

Upon arriving, Aradia had fluttered in and landed quietly on a rock, listening and watching. It was an effort to shift, after all, and if she was going to be sent out for any more scouting missions she'd prefer not to have to change shape all over again, just so she could move around as a human for a little while.

When Lorne pulled the specialists aside, she fluttered over and landed on Wakiki's shoulder again, sans any ear-nipping this time. She watched the Major with alert brown hawk-eyes, head cocked slightly to indicate that she was paying attention to what he had to say.

Charlie had remained quiet, yet attentive while settling in and the major outlining the difficulties ahead. He bit his lip hard as the point about the beliefs of the local people were brought up. "So the position up there is as solid as a rock, pun intended, and we're minions of Mot, then. Is there any kind of activity that Baal engages in that could connect him to Mot, or do we have to put Mot's head on a pike to get the villagers on our side?"
