Hikari was born to a young couple in Tokyo nine years after the Rise. Her Father had once been an American Soldier stationed in Japan, and her mother was a teacher at one of Tokyo's many public high schools. Unfortunately for her, she was born out of wedlock and both she and her mother were looked down upon in society . After she was born her parents decided to move back to her Father's home in Seattle. Her mother got a job teaching and her Father started his own construction company.

Growing up was easy enough for Hikari, even under the Order. She went to school and excelled, especially in the arts. Her Father tried pressing her into more physical than artistic endeavors but that never took, she wasn't strong or very tough, but she did excel in swordplay, having some natural talent with a bokken or fencing rapier. She combines the two styles, epee, and saber rules for a unique workout routine that she uses even today to maintain her figure. She shows great promise as a Painter, and has her work hung in several galleries. Her work is always within the bounds of what the Order sets as acceptable, as no one wishes to draw their ire.

Her mother, Shizune Motarasu, and her Father, David Laird, married after arriving in Seattle and her mother took her father's name, while Hikari retains her mother's maiden name.

She has a younger brother, Allen, who at sixteen looks just like their father, and a little sister, Arisa, who though only twelve, is like her, looking much more like their mother.

She lives comfortably in her studio/apartment, driving a worn but servicble sedan, and surviving off the sale of her art. Life is good for her, and everything is just about perfect.

She's known for her beautiful landscapes, and the way she depicts light in her pictures, as it's very distinctive. She loves wandering around and painting or sketching what she sees.

Her hobbies include reading, Kendo, and Magic tricks, as she's shown that she's a fairly good showoman and can handle most normal tricks with incredible ease.
