Craig turned around, trusting Liv to cover his back, what she could at least, and turned his eyes towards the exit, so that when there was light, he could see. "No point letting them ambush us completely." He had his pisto ready, and the pick axe over the other shoulder.

No sooner than Craig has started back for the canyon entrance than the three heard loud bestial barks and the horses screaming. Craig and Liv both knew that their own horses were not ordinary beasts and yet no horse, even a heroic one, would hesitate to flee from wolves thee size of small ponies.

"Damn." He scowled. "Gotta get back there, they can't handle wolves." He headed off back out the Canyon, relying on Liv to watch if there were more in the Cave, his pistol and pick axe ready to lay down justice on the monsters who'd killed the miners.

Now that things had obviously gone to hell, Cherry had given up any pretense of being quiet or stealthy.

In an almost conversational tone of voice she called down, "Miss Jennins', I realize ya said ya'd cover Mister Roger's retreat an' all, but if'n ya wouldn't mind bein' a bit quicker about it an' pullin' foot outta there I'd be greatly obliged."

Though her voice didn't let on, Cherry was feeling a bit torn. On the one hand, if she got back to where the horses were quick enough - where the light of the moon was more than enough for her to see clearly by - then she could actually put her rifle to some good use. But on the other hand she knew that leaving Liv behind was a truly terrible idea, whether or not the scion of the Loa was the only one who could actually see in that inky mess of a canyon or not. In all likelihood, the real danger now was that the wolves (or whatever they were) had somehow managed to sneak around behind them, and that they were now in danger of being boxed into the canyon and forced back into that lightless cave that it vanished into, but if that wasn't the case and both she and Craig left Liv to hold the line... well that just wasn't something Cherry was prepared to do.

Liv shut out the noise for a moment, resting her hand on her thigh bone. "Buffalo Soldiers, those tormented and tortured like Ah was," Liv intoned softly, "come now ta my aid. Th' blood o' my father commands it, an' Ah command it."

There was a whisper of wind, then Liv was no longer alone. "Ya three," she ordered the soldiers closest to the canyon entrance, "go help th' horses. The rest ya'll, form up on me, cover me." Turning, she began to run, following the Marshall with more surety than he had managed, as blind as he was.

The three shades surged forward and quickly passed through the marshal and out into the night their presence invisible to all save Liv. The other two quickly nodded and moved to interpose themselves between Liv and the deeper portion of the canyon. "Mistress, the dark obscures our sight as surely as it would have when we were once mortal, we will be ill prepared to offer but the most limited of warnings." That was the leader of the the five former soldiers, a man who in life had been a freeman in the north and educated as well as (or better than) many whites.

Liv nodded, there was little to be done now, they'd walked into a trap and now was time only to try and escape and worry about the resolution afterwards. Ahead Craig surged out of the canyon and into the night to see the horses gone, run off by a massive pair of wolves who's stances and postures offered little question as to their intent.

Above Cherry skidded to a halt at the cliff where the bluff broke away and the canyon entrance began. Her rifle snapped to her shoulder and as she sighted down the barrel at one of the wolves there was a ground shaking thud behind her. She spun an was able to sidestep the massive cudgel that swung toward her. The man-thing that swung it was greater in size than most men, and four times as ugly but all that remained relevant was the murderous intent in his eyes.

As she skidded to a halt at the cliff's edge, Cherry was pleased to finally have something to shoot at that she could see. She pumped the Henry's lever-action once to chamber a round and brought the divinely favored rifle up to her shoulder as she took aim down its barrel with every intention of killing something with it. But it was not to be as she felt something large and ominous impact the ground behind her.

Spinning around, Cherry was met with the sight of, she could only assume, the 'man' who was accompanying the wolves. The one who had... feasted on the miners' dead bodies.

That's just as well, she thought as she sidestepped the massive cudgel he was busily trying to crush her with, he'll do fer a target, same as the wolves. Maybe more so.

The motion of spinning to face her attacker, sidestepping to dodge her attacker's attack, and the air displaced by that attack all combined to knock Cherry's battered straw hat from her head, leaving it to tumble to the dirt and rocks at her feet and suddenly exposing her face and eyes to the light of the shining moon overhead. In that exact moment, as the eyes of her as-yet-nameless enemy fell upon the newly revealed perfection of her moonlit beauty, Cherry ignited a flame of the divinity that lay hidden inside her and captured her opponent's gaze, locking his eyes immovably to the unearthly radiance that seemed to well up from behind her eyes and below her skin.

He'd never seen anything like her! She was stunning! Exotic! Perfect!

"Hello handsome", the otherworldly vision before him said, and even her voice was lovely - and her smile as she said it! It was-

It was-

... what was that pressed against his lips?

"Let me know how this tastes, ya flesh-eatin' curly wolf!", Cherry growled as her sweet smile transformed into a grimace. She squeezed the Henry's trigger then, and sent a ball of hot lead straight down its barrel and right into 'curly wolf's' face.

Compelling Presence: Misc. Action, diceless, Speed 0. Spending a Legend point to activate Compelling presence; Curly Wolf's DV drops to zero.

Shot at Curly Wolf's face (Pool: 12[2]10[2]): Attack, Dexterity + Marksmanship (12[2]10[2]), Speed 4. (21:09:56) ChatBot: (Centimane) rolls 12d10 and gets 6,3,1,5,9,9,7,10,2,4,1,10. 9 7 successes total.

Damage: 8d10L + 9d10 threshold successes. (21:15:45) ChatBot: (Centimane) rolls 17d10 and gets 7,2,8,1,1,7,1,1,7,8,7,10,9,4,3,3,2. 9 Lethal Damage total, minus whatever Curly Wolf's soak is, plus whatever bonus she gets (if any) for shooting the bastard full in the face. Using the Fierce Attack rules for head shots +1 diff, +2 damage - nets a +1 damage

Cherry can act again on Tick 4, and I don't know whether Curly Wolf is down from that or not, so to save some time and trouble I'll go ahead and post an either/or set of actions:

If Curly Wolf is still alive and kickin': Cherry takes a single tick to Aim, and then shoots him again. Aim, Diceless, Speed 1; Attack, Dexterity + Marksmanship (12d10[2] + 2 from Aim via Trick Shot), Speed 4. (22:17:19) ChatBot: (Centimane) rolls 14d10 and gets 3,8,4,3,3,2,10,4,10,9,9,6,9,6. 10 successes total.

If Curly Wolf is actually down for the count: Cherry turns and takes a single tick to Aim at a wolf, and then fires on it. Use the dice rolls above, but apply them to one of the wolves.

Either way, the Aim, followed by an Attack, drops her DVs by -2 and takes a total of 5 ticks (meaning she would act again on Tick 10). Also, I haven't rolled damage because I don't know whether Curly Wolf will spend a Willpower point to negate Compelling Presence (or if he's even capable of it), nor do I know what the wolves' DVs are, and so cannot say how many total threshold successes apply (if any).

The crack of the rifle's report echoed out into the night but the smoke cleared showing only a very angry, and marginally uglier ... whatever he was. He blinked once and then, with a malicious gleam in his eyes, brought his massive club, which Cherry noted looked like it was an uprooted tree, in a sideways swing at the Scion. The club/tree connected with Cherry as a glancing blow catching her at full impact but without the added force of follow through. Even despite her armor and godly constitution the impact was like standing in front of a train and Cherry skidded backwards towards the drop-off. Divine grace allowed her to keep her footing and avoid tumbling over the thirty foot drop to the stony ground below.

The echoes of Liv's final shot echoed into the night and then silence fell. The wolves were dead though they were far from normal wolves. Larger, more heavily built, they looked like something out of a nightmare. The pair of Scions, flanked by a full squad of spectral soldiers, found the silence almost deafening.

From behind them there was a thump and the two spun, weapons at the ready. The night was no obstacle to Liv's senses she recognized Cherry's beaten and bloodied form in an instant. She breathed the woman's name even as he rifle tracked up to the top of the bluff. Shadowed against the starry sky was a hideous and powerfully built man, or what looked like a man, only larger. Cherry appeared to have given nearly as good as she had taken but the monster stood triumphant if apparently worse for wear.

"Your friend's life for those of my pets," the hulking form growled. He spat blood and apparently a tooth from his mouth before continuing, "When we next meet you will die as well." Then he turned and bound up into the sky as though gravity could not bind it to the world, and sailed into the night disappearing quickly.

(So I'm clear there's not enough light to see the body normally right?)

Craig couldn't see it, but he heard the dull thump, and could smell the blood. He holstered his pistol and dropped the pickaxe.

"Two wolves for a Scion, that's a bum trade any day of the week." He scowled. "Miss Jennings, can you guide me to her? The least we can do is give her a proper funeral."

"Le's see if she's ded first," Liv said softly, regret in her voice. She'd barely known the other woman, but had liked what she'd seen of her. She turned to her ghosts. "Yah four - stay here, keep an eye out. The rest o' ya break into two groups, try to find the horses and report back ta me."

They'd need the equipment from horses to bury her, if she was dead. "Jus' a moment, Marshall," Liv said and knelt by the body, checking for a pulse. There was none, and Liv sagged. "Aight. She's ded." She stood and led Craig over and together they did what they could for the woman.

The horses returned quickly, both beasts were slightly more than mere riding animals and had only run far enough to stay ahead of the wolves. The two unslung a couple of the miner's shovels and got to work quickly and buried their fallen comrade in silence. A Cairn was erected above her resting place to mark the grave and the wolves bodies were burned in a shallow ditch.

Liv paused, not really sure this was right. Cherry hadn't been a friend, but she was a fellow Scion, and it seemed a sad ended to a life. Clearing her throat, she attempted a few final words. "She was a good person. Ah wish Ah'd known her better," she said, removing her hat for the moment. "May she find peace, where'er that may be."

Liv moved up the slope slowly, the loose stone and earth made the climb difficult but far from impossible. At the top she stood in the early light looking for clues. The most obvious were the massive footprints. Whatever it was had feet that were eighteen inches long at least. There was also a smell, foul and rotten but also earthy in a strange way that she couldn't place.

OOC: If Craig wants to add his eyes to this as well please roll.

Curious As to what was taking Liv so long, Craig followed after her, handling the slope with not too much difficulty. He put his own powers of observation to the task, looking for some clue about their assailant.

Criag naturally saw the tracks, they were obvious. The odor was next, pungent and earthy. He squatted down and picked a few coarse hairs from the ground and a rock that turned out to be part of a fractured tooth. He turned and spied some blood, nothing shocking there but he stuck his fingers in and rubbed it between forefinger and thumb, then sniffed it. The clues were solid enough for one conclusion, even if it wasn't a terribly specific one: Jotun.

He looked to Liv and shook his head. "Was a Jotun, though anything more specific, I can't really say."

He wasn't happy, but that was all he could figure out. He took up the hairs and the tooth and put them ina small pouch. Perhaps another time he could hunt this Jotun down, and lay down some divine justice.

Liv frowned. "Jotun?" she asked. Craig had said it like she should know what she was talking about, but Liv didn't have a clue. "That sumthin' from your pantheon?"

She looked down at the tracks again, feeling a ripple of fear. Those feet were massive. She had the bad feeling that whatever Craig told her a 'Jotun' was, she wasn't going to like it.

Liv's Int + Occult: 0 sux

1d10=5, 1d10=5, 1d10=5, 1d10=6, 1d10=2, 1d10=3

That's one of the most mediocre rolls I've ever managed. :P

"Well, tha's good ta know," Liv drawled, quirking a bemused eyebrow up. "At least they ain't hellbent on killin' Loa. But Ah'd feel better with a bit more book-knowin'... how do we find 'em? More importantly, how do we kill 'em? And is it normal for 'em to eat people?" Liv stared at the Marshall, wondering if she needed a crowbar to wedge more than a couple of sentences out of him at a time.

"Ya Kill 'em the same way ya kill most things, taking the head has worked in the past. I'd say the wolves eating people is perfectly normal for them, though this is the first Jotun I've run across that had mastered any. I picked up what bits of it I could identify, but I'll be square with you, The Occult isn't really something I've studied."

"I'm sure you got plenty of things from your heritage to match them, though It'd be nice if I was wrong. One less type of horror waitin in the night would be a refreshing change."

Liv nodded in silent agreement, lost in thought. Together, the Scions climbed down the side of the cliff and remounted. Still in silence, the two rode back toward their camp. On the way, they met up with Liv's men and were given a short debriefing. Then the group rode to Deadwood, seeking out Luke - if he was still around.

It was midday and waning toward duck by the time they rode back into town. Not a hard ride but they were all tired of it by the time they stabled their horses. The streets bustled as people went about the end of their afternoons and thought it was a Sunday the saloon was already spilling music and frivolity out into the street. Boomtowns were like that, even if a Church was present the miner's money would burn in their pockets until they spent it on vice and sin. The two scions and the other men washed up, riding themselves of trail dust, and blood, and sweat, before heading to the watering hole in search of Luke.

The saloon looked much as it had the previous evening though the earlier hour and the day did mean fewer custom the place was still busy and the bartender barely had time to indicate the table in the far rear of the establishment when asked about Luke. Craig and Liv proceeded back into a corner where the tables were more apt to host money and cards and beer and less likely to host beer and whores. Luke was there the cards dancing through a fancy deal as he laid out the cards for the next hand.
