Birth Name: Guo Zhenglai (Zhenglai is his personal name, Guo is his family name)
Concept: Saint
Allegiance(s): His beliefs, his friends
Weight: 99 lbs.
Height: 4’10”
Age (apparent age): 106
Gender: Male
Ethnic Background: Chinese
Nationality (place of origin): China, Hubei Province
Eye Color: Dark brown, almost black
Hair Color: Pure white
Handedness: Both
General Appearance: He looks really old (appears to be somewhere between his late eighties and his mid-nineties). Guo Zhenglai stands all of 4’10” and might weigh one hundred pounds soaking wet. His eyes are such a dark brown as to be almost black and his hair and beard are white. He always dresses very simply, and is never without his ubiquitous cane. A closer look reveals certain incongruities in his appearance, however. At first glance he appears to be just another harmless old man, but an astute observer will notice that his posture is just a little too straight, and his eyes a little too clear for this to be the case. One might wonder if he truly needs the cane at all.

Traits and Personality: Guo Zhenglai is generally reserved, quiet, and contemplative, giving him the air of a true Ancient Master of the Way. However, he has the odd habit of periodically resorting to very casual, surprisingly modern, and occasionally crude American phrases in order to convey a point or get his feelings across. He’s humble, sad just below the surface, but also driven. Zhenglai is also very prone to stillness, whether standing or sitting, whenever movement is not absolutely necessary, and is not prone to moving quickly unless it is absolutely necessary. This trait frequently frustrates younger, or simply less patient individuals.

Abilities and Special Skills: Zhenglai has long been considered a Grandmaster in several styles of Wu-style kung fu, particularly Chen style Taijiquan, Yang style Taijiquan, and Yin style Ba Gua Zhang. These three major schools of kung fu include a small army of lesser styles such as Qi Gong, Dragon Gate, Magic Sword, Purity and Emptiness Form, etc., etc.. The styles of kung fu Zhenglai knows are all “internal” meaning they put little emphasis on muscle strength, instead focusing on harnessing one’s inner power or “qi” (chi). Due to his now-advanced age, Guo Zhenglai's actual fighting prowess has withered noticeably (a fact that he will humbly, readily, and happily admit to), but his reputation remains largely undiminished due to his exceptional skill as an instructor of those same martial traditions.

Zhenglai also possesses an impressive grasp of the major Taoists texts, and can discuss them at great length and in great depth. Further, he is also highly skilled in traditional Taoist folk medicine, including advanced acupuncture techniques and a knowledge of a wide variety of natural remedies for many different ailments, and is a master of qigong's healling applications as well. Guo Zhenglai's mastery of neidan techniques (the so-called 'internal alchemy' of the Taoist sages) is especially advanced, as his great age and impressive physical health will attest to.

Background: Guo Zhenglai was born in China’s Hubei Province just outside the city of Danjiankou in the Year of the Dragon, 1904. His parents were poor farmers. When he was eight, they sent him to live with an Uncle in the city proper who was a kung fu teacher and was better off financially. One year later his parents disappeared in a winter storm and were presumed dead. From then on Zhenglai’s life revolved around kung fu training and Taoist meditation. By the age of 21 Zhenglai was already recognized as being exceptionally skilled in Chen style Taijiquan. He later went on to master Yang style Taijiquan and Ba Gua Zhang, among others.

By the time he was thirty, Zhenglai had already fallen deeply in love, spent time in prison after being falsely accused of theft, and had his heart broken by the woman he’d fallen in love with. For the next four years Zhenglai fought with the KMT (Kuomintang party) against both the Japanese and the Communist Party. Initially he was used in an elite combat unit whose purpose was sabotaging Japanese supply lines, but after a few years he was moved to intelligence and industrial sabotage.

It was during this time (1937) that Guo Zhenglai met the woman who would become the love of his life. Zhang Jurong Chan was a former street urchin who participated in kung fu demonstrations for money, but at by the time Zhenglai met her, at the age of 27, she spent all her time studying kung fu at a local boxing school (this was in Chengdu, Sichuan province). Jurong Chan was a self-assured, honorable young lady of unparalleled beauty who was known for both her pious adherence to Taoist texts and her efficient brutality in combat against any opponent. So fierce was Jurong Chan that she became known as Chan Xiao Hu (Chan the little tiger).

Two years after meeting Jurong Chan, Zhenglai was again falsely accused, this time of murder. The gang enforcer who had previously set up Zhenglai had tried to double-cross the underworld syndicate who were themselves trying to scam the KMT, and they had killed him to keep their secret. Because of his known vendetta against the enforcer, Zhenglai made a perfect fall guy, and he soon found himself hunted for a crime he did not commit. In the end Zhenglai and Jurong Chan fled together to Shaanxi province, the heart of communist China. There they settled at Hua Shan Mountain at a Taoist temple and eventually they married in a quiet ceremony. For the next sixty-two years they managed to find some peace and security, and both of them still teach kung fu and traditional folk medicine techniques to students to this day.
