Curtis was adopted as an infant by Jesse and Jeff Shane, a gay couple in Omaha, Nebraska. They had also adopted 4-year old Kara a year later, technically making her his big sister. His life within the family over the years, was and always has been close.

When in 5th grade, anti-gay attention angered Curtis, who drew away from others mostly, and focused on his hobbies of computers and electronics. He became an impressively knowledgable child who was in middle school running computer IT and building services for the neighborhood. Indeed, his intelligence and facility with technology was fearsomely strong.

In time, Curtis became more sociable, but no less interested in true friends. High school started to force him to reevaluate his stance, but in short order, events changed rather surprisingly and drastically quickly.

At age 15, Curtis was in the car with Kara going to the grocery store, when a speeding car rammed into their white Honda. Curtis was shaken up and concussed, but Kara was terribly injured, and in utter need of medical attention. Curtis was taken to the hospital and checked out, but strangely, as soon as he'd been given a thumbs up by the doctors Curtis was whisked out by Jeff and driven home, while Jesse remained behind.

Curtis was alone again, and to make matters worse, his adopted parents told him Kara was in such bad shape that she was in a coma. Grief-stricken and still disorientated, Curtis accepted what they said… for a few months.

He then picked up on some suspicious clues: Jesse and Jeff referring to Kara in ways that subtly suggested she was already dead to them, no updates from the doctor or Curtis being allowed to see her, all screaming that something was not right and truthful about this situation.

This burning brotherly love and concern led to- one night when his parents had went to a movie- Curtis daring to hack into the Nebraska Medical Center; evidence mounting of wrongdoing here (no physicians assigned to her) but the files that held any direct references to her stay were encrypted beyond his measure. Over the course of hours of hacking, he found himself able to visualize the code he wrote more and more vividly, eventually he could interface mentally with his computer and other systems, allowing him to finally crack the protections around the files.

The truth turned his stomach and shook him to the core. Kara had survived, albeit no longer bright as she once was, and rather slow now from brain damage. She also had an X-gene, which the accident had caused to accelerate in development in the hospital as well, causing her to increase in size and strength tremendously. Kara had low-level superhuman physicals before, but they had now surged. And once this had become knowledge to the staff and his parents, government agents had appeared take custody of Kara. Jesse and Jeff had handed over their own daughter without complaint, and arguably delight. The trail stopped there, but Curtis now had more important things at the moment.

The source of his own mental muscle was clear as day, and horrified at the character of his parents’ prejudice and decisions, aware he could likely face the same fate sooner or later, Curtis decided to evade his Damocles Sword. Already aware of the Lawrence Hunt Academy as an escape route, he diligently packed what he could, transferred all of his savings account into his separate checking account, and then left the home he’d lived in for his whole life with an expression of agony.

A couple days of motels and buses later, Curtis arrived at the refuge of the Lawrence Hunt Academy and met with Director Drumm, who immediately enrolled him as a student. That was all a year ago, with very little success in Curtis’ private efforts towards finding and freeing Kara, while he learned to open up a little more...

Kara's fate has been left deliberately unknown, in fact it is intended for you to use her as part of a plot device later in the story.


Personality

Curtis’ superhuman intelligence has admittedly given him a little bit of ego, but he’s still reasonably sociable and kind. Of course, if you give him a challenge, he’ll likely be all over it if he finds it interesting. He still maintains a certain distance despite his friendly interactions with many students, and perish the thought of romantic relationships. After all, of the three people he’s been truly close to, one has vanished, potentially dead, and the other two have betrayed him deeply.

About the nature of Curtis' Powers

In the process that developed Curtis' intelligence to superhuman levels, his brain and nerves have now acquired the ability to sense, process and interact with electromagnetic waves, thus allowing him to interface with technology as a cyberkinetic.

Recently he has succeeded increasing the strength of this neural interactive capacity to the point where he is electro-kinetic as well, able to unleash electrical blasts, and create damage electrical fields.
