World of Darkness: Attrition - A Truly Long Night [complete]

Jeremy

Recommended Posts

Owns-The-Night snarled at the Men who had so grievously wounded him, but did not attack. The instinct for self-preservation warred with the need to strike out, and won. Incredibly, the huge Gauru shape turned and fled, driven by an urge more powerful than loyalty or bloodlust: the urge to live.

Later, Owns-The-Night would feel ashamed of his unwitting actions. Later, he would have to deal with the fact of having left packmates in dire peril as his instincts drove him to seek safety. That was later. In the Now, the uratha moved with blinding speed as he fled back the way he had come, barging out into the night air behind the church and fleeing into the darkness.

Click to reveal..

Forsaken p 174 states that a Werewolf who enters Kuruth as a result of one of his last three health boxes being marked flees the scene, driven by instinct to seek safety.

Dec's speed is 16 in Gauru. Moving all-out, he can cover 32 yards in an action. That should be enough to get him clear out the back door of the church with some extra distance thrown in.

Also, spending 1 essence to heal.

The massive volume of gunfire that sounded through the night was enough to break Sarah's indecision; her friend's howl of agony put determination into her spine.

Not gonna leave you, Dec. Not this time.

The Dead-Wolf - still in her name-sake form - broke into a run. But this was no ordinary run; with vitae burning hot in her muscles, she raced across the gravel parking lot faster than anything short of a cheetah had any right to do.

Hunters broke from the church just as she had left the cover of the woods, running not at her but out toward the road; as she neared the door they'd left open behind them, she caught sight of a massive dire wolf - Amber, she recognized - tearing off after them. Neither of these things gave pause to her run; Amber was supposed to get a taste for at least one to be let escape, she knew, and the real danger lay ahead. Concentrating on her goal, she didn't see the huge warform of Declan running from the back of the church.

With a leap, Sarah burst into the sanctuary, but this wolf did not howl in her charge. No, the Dead-Wolf had no desire to bring those guns around on her. Instead, she used the length of a pew to come to a stop before hitting the center aisle, then tried to assess the tactical realities of this bleak situation.

The bullets and shotgun blast rip into Moss despite what little cover he had been able to gain from the pews. As the change to the Garou form overtakes him Jeremy heals some of the damage caused by the J-SWAT's firearms. A quick shake of his body sends splatters of blood flying across the pews and with a defiant howl the towering, gaunt figure of Moss' Garou form closes the gap and sends as claw ripping into, and through, the torso of one of his attackers.

The freshly injured Hunter screamed, dropping his gun as he fell back and to the side, hands clamped over his lower torso in an effort to keep his intestines in even as he scrabbled backwards on his butt. The scent of cordite became tinged with fear and imminent death to the Gauru-shaped werewolf as the less injured Hunters, with an obvious struggle for self-control, hoarsely shouted exhortations to one another and opened fire.

The closeness of the monster to two of their compatriots, however, caused the Hunters to have to pick their shots carefully or else risk hitting one of their own. The bullets and buckshot tore into No-Moss, but miraculously the snarling, roaring Gauru was still standing at the end of the fusillade.

The sight of Moss hanging on scared Jeremy, until he took a breath and figured, hey, if we die, we die. In one move, he picked an injured man, and hurled the knife he held. Cursing in a series of rumbling growls, Amber kept pace with the hunter. Eying him carefully, she timed her bite a little better, and this time, scored a solid hit. Her enemy's blood coated her tongue, and Amber stopped chasing him, feeling good knowing that her job had been done. Unaware of what she was returning to, Amber turned back, prepared to rejoin the fight.

The massive werewolf held the attention of the hunters, even as it turned and bolted from the side door. Its howls of rage nicely covered the soft paw steps of its undead ally, as Sarah stalked silently between the pews, only springing when she was within a few feet of her chosen victim.

Jaws backed by an unholy strength clamped and then ripped through cloth and flesh and bone, tearing a chunk out of the hunter and leaving a massive, savage wound bleeding profusely.

The Hunter screamed and dropped, gouting blood from the savage bite as the others, throats hoarse now from adrenaline and cordite and, in some cases, pain as they shouted orders to one another and opened fire. The leader with the SMG and his wingman with the shotgun were forced to check their fire as the monstrous form of No-Moss bolted, turning their heads quickly towards the lurking figure behind a pew even as Sarah Dead-Wolf took down their teammate. The man who'd been standing next to the man downed by Jeremy's thrown knife shouted in alarm and changed targets from Jeremy to Sarah, taking aim at the snarling wolf and opening up.

That dark thing within Sarah, the monster that she and her kind called the Beast, cried out as the gunfire came in, demanding that she protect herself.

For once, it and Sarah were in agreement.

Clamping her jaws on the fallen Hunter before her, the Dead-Wolf dragged him as quickly as possible a few feet backward as she squirmed under one of the heavy wooden pews. His blood ran fast and hot in her lupine mouth, and as she pulled him before her as a shield, she lapped at that life-giving fluid... even as she burned more within her veins, pushing bullets out of holes in her dead flesh and sealing the wounds behind then.

It was a temporary respite, Sarah knew, and she could only hope that her fierce werewolf friends would return to the fight.

The hunter armed with the MP-5 was tenacious, agilely hopping from pew to pew and gaining a better angle to shoot at the hapless changeling. He saw a chance and the muzzle of the gun snapped up, a quick burst showering the scrambling Jeremy with splinters from the pew he was taking refuge behind. The hunter cursed and started to move closer yet.

The two hunters with shotguns signalled each other and began closing in on Sarah, intent on digging the hellbeast from it's impromptu foxhole, and if possible saving their fallen friend. Each pushed a handful of shells into their shotguns as they moved. It wouldn't do to be face to face with that Thing only to have hammers fall on empty chambers.

The man with Jeremy's knife in his shoulder groaned and slumped against a pew, just about keeping his handgun level as he waited to lend what support he could. He was too badly injured to move around much, and he hoped the fight wouldn't last much longer. He could feel his life's blood oozing out of the gash in his belly where that damn beast's spear had torn into him.

On the other side of the aisle, the man No-Moss had gutted was in little better shape, moving at a stumbling pace as he tried to back up his leader, pistol also in hand as he covered the top of the pews where he'd last seen Jeremy.

In all the confusion, no-one noticed Amber stalking through the gunsmoke-wreathed gloom.

Like a monster from the deep, Amber slipped out from under a pew and behind a waiting hunter. Silently, she shifted back to Urshal and leapt to the attack, her massive teeth bared as an unseen warning. The unfortunate hunter was looking the wrong way, his attention on the battle. That oversight cost him his life. Her jaws closed around his neck, biting down until her teeth scraped bones. The blood from his jugulars rushed over her jaws, pooling at her feet as his death rattle filled her ears.

Releasing his body meant that he slumped harder against the pew, provided a bit of convenient cover. She crouched behind his slumped body, her golden eyes looking for the next target.

There was a shuffling noise from the pew, and the pair of hunters who had been waiting for their chance to take a shot at the skulking wolf instead saw their fallen ally begin to move. His legs bent at the knee, and maybe there was some hope that he'd pull through...

...hope that became sudden fear when the wolf - which had been carefully poking at those knees from the back to clear a path - burst from its hiding place in a sudden lunge. Sarah caught one of the hunters, momentarily distracted by his friend's motion, and tore hard at tender, tender flesh, her teeth ripping through as blood sprayed across polished wood, torn cloth and grey fur.

"Fuuucck!" screamed the Hunter who'd been moving in support of the hapless man the Dead Wolf had just emasculated. He was clearly shaken, but backed off in a controlled fashion, the muzzle of his gun not wavering as he leveled it at Sarah. The leader took a moment from drawing a bead on Jeremy to sweep his eyes around the room, assessing the situation and making a decision rapidly.

"Cover and withdraw!" he yelled above the screams and gunfire, suiting action to words and moving towards the wounded man on the north side of the church, who snapped a rapid series of shots off at the snarling, blood-covered Amber with his pistol. The leader's SMG levelled on Sarah as the one remaining shotgun-wielder also moved back, levelling a blast of shot at Amber. The three men were clearly intending to use the northern-most fire exit to get away.

Amber felt the bite of the hunters' guns and knew that she was in trouble. She pumped spiritual power through her flesh, healing bullet-riddled flesh.

Her soul screamed at the assault on her body, making terrible demands, but the Ghost Wolf held close to her temper. Losing it right now would be disastrous. Instead, keeping her corpse as cover, she tried to wedge her body under the pew. In wolf form, it wasn't hard; as a wolf the size of a pony, there was only so much folding a body could do. It left her sticking out awkwardly, half-in and half-out.

The three Hunters moved back, breathing heavily from the adrenaline thumping through their bodies, guns up warily as the leader moved to the side of the wounded man, putting one arm around his teammate and helping him out through the door. The third man was right behind them, shotgun trying to cover all three hostiles at once. He paused there, waiting for a few long, torturous moments before he heard the deep-throated rumble of an SUV start up. At that, he was gone from the doorway, and the werewolf, vampire and changeling all heard the crunching spray of tires on gravel as the human's made their getaway.

Sarah kept her hackles up and a menacing growl until the last hunter had left the building. As soon as that was passed, however, she made the shift back to a very notably paler version of her normal self. A few bullets popped out of wounds that closed behind them, and she checked the most recently fallen of the enemy. It was still warm, the vitality of life not completely fled. With a quick apologetic look to her companions, she bared fangs and supped as best she could, almost shaking with hunger after the draining fight.

Amber shifted out from under the pew, grumbling in a series of growls. That could have gone better. With a snort, she began to sniff puddles of blood, growling once at Sarah when she saw her drinking from a corpse. The wolf looked a little sheepish after the growl; it seemed to have been instinctive rather than reactive. When she smelled a puddle that didn't smell like one of the corpses', she took a lick of blood.

Meanwhile, she'd been healing up, and she felt good enough to shift up into her human form. Padding around naked, she began to help Jeremy roll the bodies.

It took a minute for Sarah to finish healing herself up - the last bullet falling to the floor with a leaden thud - and to get her vitae up to a level that qualified as "safe". She'd not missed Amber's growl, and gave her own sheepish look in reply.

After licking the last of the rapidly thickening red liquid from her lips, she turned to the task of going through the pockets of her fallen enemies. Even so, she said in a voice uncharacteristically small and meek for the Dead-Wolf, "Sorry about that; wish you hadn't seen it."
