Aberrant: Stargate Universe - Thieves in the Night

The team headed out, working their way toward the Al'kesh Cam had selected. They soon found themselves in Yu's busy shipyards. Patrolling Jaffa stared at them with suspicion while workers paused in their labors just to see something new. The slaves drew much attention, in particular. Knots of tension rose in the SGC member's bodies who unused to this kind of activity and stress.

Finally, a checkpoint, in a crowded area, with Jaffa standing guard. One of them wore the red pipping they'd seen before. "What is your business?" he asked Cam, since he was leading.

"Escorting these slaves to inspect and clean the new ship, Fist of Heaven's Thunder. It is to be presented to one of our Lord's vassals as a reward along with these slaves to attend him."

Cam waited to see a reaction and thought to Kyria, I don't know if you can influence this guy's mind or not to believe our cover story, but now would be a good time...

Kyria caught her CO's drift and touched the mind of red-piped Jaffa, gently inserting a memory of having overheard something about a group like theirs coming through and to be expecting them. She colored it with what she hoped was the appropriate weight of slightly important, mostly annoying, and certainly not worth spending any more time than strictly necessary on.

The Jaffa paused, then waved them through. They started to go, but one of the other Jaffa stepped forward, grabbing the one with red-pipping. The other Jaffa stepped foward, Staff Weapon held ready, blocking them. The two Jaffa were having a whispered, intense conversation.

She shot Cam a slight shake of her head; there was no way she could get to all the Jaffa's memories fast enough to salvage this if they red-piped one didn't convince the others to let them through. She tried to keep her head down and her manner as subservient as possible but her nerves were still fried from earlier.

Please let this work and let us get out of here. Nothing about this place is right and we simply don't have the time or resources to clean it up at the moment.

Gwyn also tried to do his best bored but getting irritated Jaffa impersonation. In such a crowded area they couldn't really risk shooting their way out of it. Well, they could if they had to, but it would blow the operation in the process. He tried to hear what was being said in the whispered conversation, and wished he had Olivia's enhanced hearing, it would this easier.

Gwyn could hear that the second Jaffa was questioning the first about where he'd heard that conversation. Apparently, there was worry about insurgents creating trouble. Before he could mention this to Cam, the red-pipping turned back to them. "Who gave you those orders?" the Jaffa asked, looking irritated. From the looks he was giving his underling, it was all directed at his fellow guard.

Omar pushed aside his frustration at the cloak and dagger mission they were engaged in. While he would have preferred to muscle his way into the shipyards and steal one of them, he understood that the others were not as hearty as he was and were vulnerable to both staff weapons and zats.

Omar moved a little closer to the two guards, his face storming with anger. He made it a point to make himself intimidating. He also hoped that Cam would notice what he was doing and react appropriately. These constant delays were annoying.

Damnit Omar! Cam thought, and moved forward quickly to put a restraining hand on the big man's arm and step between him and the other guards. Frowning up at Omar he looked back to the guards and spat out the name as if disgusted, "Pian Donghai". "He was supposed to finish the ship this morning, but he reported ill, may the Son of Heaven blast him. Now we are forced to escort these," again he put disgust into his tone, and gestured to the slaves, "to complete his work for him."

The Jaffa all reacted to Omar like a threat, pulling themselves up and going for weapons. When Cam pushed forward, he found they were still antsy. Red-Pipping seemed satisfied with Cam's name dropping, but the other Jaffa muttered something about calling him. Red-Pipping finally decided he'd had enough, and silenced the other Jaffa with jerk of his hand. Irritated, he waved Cam and the others through.

After they were fifteen feet in, they all heard the Red-Pipping say, "They must be from very high in the mountains."

The others laughed, and one of them replied, "Yes, I'll cut their chopsticks short for them." This was greeted with more laughter.

Yseult breathed a sigh of relief as the specialists made their way pass the checkpoint without it devolving into a confrontation. Mon Dieu! That will being using up all of our luck.

She followed along, crowding a bit closer to her fellow 'servants', hoping that next time there was the possibility of an encounter, there wouldn't be the threat of having the entire city garrison coming down on them.

Crap.

Kyria caught herself as she was bowled passed; recovering with what she realized was probably too much balance. They were supposed to be passing for baselines, right? She debated what to do - awkwardly fall over (which, she charitably thought might be a little overkill) or just straiten up and hope no-one noticed. Of course, during the debate she was holding at an strange angle halfway between falling over and standing up....

She opted for standing up and finished righting up; she shot Cam a questioning look asking for direction.

Cam stepped up pulling on his own air of command to it's fullest. "He was complaining of having to escort these pa'tak, to clean and present the ship when he would rather be dicing in the barracks." Cam gestured disdainfully again at the slaves. "As would I. I was to be introduced to our master's Second Prime this night by my brother-in-law, but instead I lead this... this lowly duty. Now let us be gone before I forget my own temper as well." He gestured to Gwyn, "If this one's words offend you then let them be settled after we have completed our task. I will not fail our master over some misspoken word not heard properly even by an exalted File Leader such as yourself."

At the same time he thought to Kyria, Make him believe what I'm saying if you can...

The File Leader scowled. The orders made good sense and he wanted to obey them. But his pride had been pricked, and he was a Red Dragon of Yu - such a thing came with rank and privledges. One of those was not having to take guff from a lesser Jaffa. An idea came to him, a way to obey the command and still get what he wanted.

"You may go," the File Leader said. He pointed at Gwyn. "He stays, so that I can deal with his insubordination, and not keep you from your duties. After all, it's just some slaves, and you are Jaffa. You don't need all of you to manage some humans."

Kyria caught Cam's tone, if not his thrown thought. She focused again on the File Leader, slipping into his mind and tracking down the most unpleasant memories of what happened to those that disobeyed orders - or interfered with other's orders. Revenge on some snotty mountain Jaffa certainly wasn't worth losing his rank over, was it? Besides, once they were done with their assignment, then he could do as he pleased with the soldier.

Yseult's heart leapt up into her throat as the Red-piped Jaffa shoved pass her, throwing her off balance. Merde! Qu'est qui passe, maintenant?

She climbed back to her feet with athletic grace, barely supressing - with a frown of surprise - the instinctive urge to raise her telekinetic field. Yseult remained on the cusp of activating it, keeping her arms crossed in the deep sleeves of her servant's robes, a hand on her Zat. She desperately hoped that it would not be needed - they were too close to getting to the ship for it all to fall apart now.

Gwyn fully realised how close to scuppering the plan his comment was coming, and that the already tired Kyria was probably having to work overtime to get them out of this. If only the half-deaf arsehole had actually heard what I said rather than just a word or so there shouldn't have been this trouble. As it was all he could do was to keep his face as impassive as he had seen Teal'c and try to keep the rising wish to shove a heightend density spearhand strike like a jackhammer through the file leader's throat from showing on his face.

Kyria could feel the dissonance she was creating in his mind. He’d stated his intent, and to back down now would cause him to lose face in front of the others. But he was plaint to her wishes, and she bore down, altering his thoughts further as he struggled to think of a way out of this.

When he did, it was the mental equivalent of jigging to the side. “You,” he snapped, pointing to the man who had been arguing with him. “You’ll go with them and bring him back when his duty is concluded. Following along like a child and wasting my time waiting is beneath me.” Of course, the implication is that it wasn’t beneath his rival.

Cam nodded decisively. "That is good, File leader. I am humbled by your wisdom. He will be returned to you the moment our duties are complete."

Cam let the other man follow with them to the ship, once inside a quick zat would resolve the matter, but he kept a wary eye out for trouble on the way.

There was silence as they were joined by the intruder, who walked along sullenly. This area was all the shipyards, with massive ships being constructed. Walking took a while; they had to navigate past massive pyramids, all in various stages of construction. The group proceeded sedately, not drawing any more attention until they came to the ship that Cam had chosen. Now the group had their tagalong to deal with, as well as working on how to get the ship out of here.

Gwyn was fascinated by the work going on around him and the various stages of the pyramid style ships on display as they walked along. Unfortunately with the presence of the Jaffa and the need to stay in role he had to keep his wish to stare about him under strict control. However, what little he did manage to observe served to inform the reading he had managed to do and expand his rapidly growing engineering knowledge of the Goa'uld.

Kyria give an internal sigh of relief now that they were finally at the ship; the soldier could be dealt with or taken prison, and they were finally going to get off this planet. They hadn't been there all that long yet, really, but the telepath would be very happy to be leaving. She reached out to the space the ship was in with her mind, sensing for anyone inside that they would also have to deal with.

There appeared to be few minds in the ship. Cam was able to zap the Jaffa with them, knocking him into slumber land. He was stashed near the rings to be beamed down later. After that, Cam, Omar, Gwyn and Ryan were able to herd the workers already there off, using the authority of the Jaffa to clear them out. Then it was just them on the ship.

Cam moved to the pilots seat and sat. He didn't have naquadah in his blood, but he did have something just as useful, he could interface directly with computers without needing to even touch them when necessary. Of course touch made the job oh so much easier.

Now they just needed to wait for the distraction, and while they did was a good time to learn what he could about the ship's systems and hopefully about the other ships in the area. "This tub better have a cloak," he muttered under his breath.

Lastly, he's checking out the other ships and verifying their positions, paying particular attention to that Ha'tak that is ready for takeoff.

Yseult checked the downed Jaffa, to make sure there were no adverse affects - after all, tasers have been known to kill too. Seeing that the Jaffa was fine, other than being unconscious, Yseult turned her attention to the rest of the vessel.

Her superhuman senses precisely measured the contours, inhuman gaze studying panels and displays. With Cam linked to the ship, there should be no problem piloting the craft. All they had to wait for was their distraction. Yseult chewed on a lip, still somewhat concerned about the possible extent of that explosion.

Time passed. The Jaffa awoke, to find he was bound alone in a room; though he didn't know it, he was waiting to be ringed down to the planet again. The specialists were left twiddling their thumbs, waiting for the big moment.

It never came. The time for the explosion came and went. Cam was monitoring the airwaves, and found the reason: the conspirators had been captured. He could view their execution through the system, if he wished.

It was time to adapt or die.

Kyria muttered under her breath in the universal language of cussing as news of what had happened made it through the group.

"Well, what's plan B? And what do we have available from the ship? Can this one cloak?" She looked around, thinking. "We have the rings. We could have someone go make a distraction, then meet up to ring them back to the ship, then run. If we're still looking to stay off the radar as far as being seen using powers, this is gonna be even more-"

A thought struck her, "....hey, Cam? Can you hack their system and just schedule us a departure time and reason?"

They had to wait a bit; Cam had to maneuver the ship into the departure docket, squeezing it between a cargo ship coming down and a wing of Death Gliders doing a fly-over of the city. But they finally achieved lift off, with their flight path out of the city and off the planet laid out before them.

Cam moved the ship into position and let the ship cruise sedately off planet and out into their supposed test flight trajectory. Once out of the atmosphere Cam moved the ship through the orbiting fleet of ships in system for trade and repair before engaging the cloak. No need to frighten or disturb the big ships with their big weapons after all.

Once cloaked he turned the ship from it's predefined flight path and opened up the throttle to see how fast the ship could go. After gaining a bit of distance he would enter hyperspace on the first of a series of about a dozen jumps designed to throw off any pursuit or anyone that might try to follow. While in that first leg of hyperspace he also decided to check the ship for any subspace beacons or other tracking devices that might lead Yu to their Beta Site.

Cam's computer checks found no beacons or tracking devices. He did find a couple Goa'uld booby traps, but thanks to O'Neill and Teal's famed adventure in the first X-01, they were wholly expected. After the third hyperspace jump, everyone started to relax. Elated that their ordeal was over, the specialists began to explore the ship.

Yseult found the Jaffa who they had forgotten, and who had managed to half-free himself from his bonds. She zatted him again, praying it wouldn't kill him, then got some of the others. After some consultation, they dropped him off on a Free Jaffa world, where they hoped that his mindset could be changed.

Then they were finally free to return home with their prize.
