Aberrant: Stargate Universe - The Other Side [Complete]

Kyria was sitting in one of the team debriefing rooms, the lights off and the glow of the computer monitor lighting her face an eerie glow. She was simmering, her emotions under tight control and absolutely roiling under the surface; she flicked through the records she'd managed to pull up on her own, mostly what Steve had already uncovered, on one 'Maxwell Mercer (missing, presumed dead)'. Airmen (and a few Airwomen) were making circuitous routes around the base that conveniently brought them by the door or windows of the room on a regular basis, but instead of the distracted smile or absent wave that their antics would usually garner from the mysterious alien, this time her frown stayed determinedly focused on the puzzle in front of her.

"Where did you go, Max? And why?" Unspoken in that was the accusation that things would have been different in this timeline had her fathers met as they had done in every other timeline Kyria knew of. She'd left notes for some of the other specialist, mostly those she'd had contact with, seeing if they had the time to help her with this mystery of her other side. She rubbed her temple, her frustration building into one of the rarest experiences of the young nova's life: a splitting headache.

Yseult sat down at the desk in her lab to begin some more research on the remedy for the goa'uld anti-toxin. As of late, her thoughts were running with ever greater speed, and new ways of approaching the solution were coming to her all the time.

As Yseult flicked on the coomputer, she noticed a folded piece of paper on her desk. She picked it up, and read the incredibly elegant, yet precise handwriting, her full lips tight with thought. She hadn't yet decided what she thought of the young 'Nova'. Despite that, she liked the inhuman beauty, she thought, with only the faintest blush.

And she certainly wasn't someone who couldn't fault her for searching for family. Kyria had come to a new reality - she still had little reason why - with no sure way of ever going back. The lure of family, however unorthodox, must have been a powerful one. Yseult knew how fiercely she missed her own, and that was merely a separation of two thousand miles - and a NDA - rather than dimensions. She couldn't do less than help.

It wasn't hard to find Kyria, simply asking the first Airmen she saw gave her a location. Yseult stood in the doorway, watching her for a moment, a slight frown on her lips as she noticed Kyria rubbing her temples. When Kyria looked up, Yseult gave her a nod and put a smile on her face, stepping forward.

"Bonjour Kyria, what is it that I can be helping you with, today?"

Steve walked into the debriefing room and gave his 500 watt smile to the lovely ladies. He was honestly looking forward to this. Kyria was studying some guy who'd probably been dead for decades, Steve was studying Kyria and his teammates. He suspected he'd find out more than they would.

Steve asked, "More of the same?"

Kyria gave her two visitors a weak smile and shook her head at Steve's question. "Only somewhat. I'm looking for another man again, but instead of being murdered, Max just disappeared right after high school. Nothing except the entire lack of any reason to do so points at foul play."

She swiveled the desktop monitor to show them a black and white picture of a well-to-do and striking young man dressed in a formal jacket from nearly a century ago. "His name is Maxwell Mercer, and in every other timeline I know of, he and Michael met and were......points of change in each other's lives. In this timeline, however, Max disappeared and someone arranged to have Michael murdered several decades later. I want to know why he disappeared, how, where and what he's been doing for the past century, and if he's still alive."

She frowned at the computer screen, "And so far, I've gotten little enough to be nothing. Think you can help out?"

*Honestly? No, not at all. It's been like 75 years and there's no record of him actually needing to leave or him needing money or other resources afterwards. Let me guess, young and attractive guy? I think odds are a practiced serial killer killed him and made the body disappear so well it still hasn't turned up.*

Steve said, "I'm certainly willing to try. Let's start by thinking outside the box. Instead of us figuring out local Max, could you tell us about the Max you knew? Habits, likes, dislikes, talents, abilities, all that stuff? What charities did he give to, anything at all could be useful. Your Max is this guy's identical twin."

A furrow appeared between Yseult's brows as she began to consider possible solutions to this puzzle - finding a man who has been missing for almost a century. She listened to the overly attractive Steve as he asked Kyria about the Max from her - and/or other - reality(ies). She tapped her lips with a slender finger.

"This Maxwell Mercer, he was like you - us - a specialist, or otherwise a singular type of man? Someone who is responsible for world wide change in multiple parallel realties may be considered such, yes? One thing that should be considered, if he... evolved sufficiently or possessed the proper frame of mind, is that he ascended, much like Daniel Jackson has done before. If so, then he is prohibited from interacting on this plane of existence, at least in any direct manner."

"Another option - the Asgard possess the capability of conducting world-wide genetic scans. If we can find something that once belonged to him, the tiniest speck of genetic residue should be enough for them to perform a scan. This line of action does have some inherent challenges. Un, we need some compatible genetic material. Deux, we need to contact the Asgard, Et trois, we need to convince them - or make a deal with them - to perform a personal request."

Cam had been standing at the door listening and not wanting to interrupt, but he saw his opportunity.

"Actually all we need to do is ask the Asgard that is aboard the Prometheus. They've installed Asgard beaming technology as well as their hyperdrives, they might just have the scanning tech as well. I hear they are due back soon. In fact Daniel Jackson is with them, seems they never made it to the Pegasus galaxy, they got hijacked on the way, but Daniel managed to retake the ship."

He grinned, "So is there anything I can do to help?"

Yseult turned and gave Cameron a nod, followed by a wry smile. "The reading material, it was quite limited while in isolation. I was aware of the beaming technology and hyperdrives aboard the Prometheus. I was not sure how far they had increased the scanners, though. This will definitely make it less difficult. Now we just need a source of genetic material so we know what to scan for."

Kyria actually looked both surprised and pleased, having completely forgotten about this realities good relations with alien races. "That could work! Uh..." She blushed slightly at her outburst. "I mean, we have everything we need, if genetic material is all."

She fiddled with her fingers, actually looking nervous, then took a breath and said, "Max is my father. My other father. And yes, he was a nova. At least that's what my fa...what Michael told me. I never met him myself." She turned pleading and hopeful eyes on Cameron, "Do you really think they could find him that way? That they'd be willing to help?"

Something finally caught up in her brain as she abruptly asked, "Daniel retook the ship from hijackers? Did he throw books at them?" It wasn't immediately clear if the question was in jest or not.

Omar saw Cam standing outside a doorway and went to investigate after the man entered a room. He then heard a name he had not thought of in a long time. Maxwell Mercer. What was Kyria thinking searching for Mercer? The man would assuredly be different here than on her world. He was probably long dead. Still, Omar was intrigued and entered. His presence could be felt throughout the room as his massive frame dwarfed everyone.

Omar knew alot about Mr. Mercer, having chased the man through time several times. "Maxwell Mercer was a Psiad, Kyria, not a Nova. He was an extremely powerful Meta-human who jumped through different periods of history. he was able to see what the future had in store because he had been there." Omar walked up to Kyria and smiled at her, holding her hands gently. "Maxwell introduced us to your father, Michael. He saw the threat that was coming and he formed the Aeon Society, of which we were a part. Max was a kind and noble man who wanted what was best for all humanity."

"Unfortunately, I'm not sure that he would exist as he did in your world. There was no 'Hammersmith Event'. Sadly, he is probably dead by now. If he's not, then he's locked away in some lab working on god knows what."

Omar didn't want to overpower the discussion, so he sat, hoping that he might be able to contribute more. The others, and Kyria were bound to have questions.

"That can't be right." Kyria frowned at Omar and shook her head. "He'd have to be a nova. Psiads and novas aren't genetically compatible." She shook her head again, obviously confused and shaken; she distracted herself with answering some of the other points Omar had made.

"He's here in this timeline, or at least he was born here. He disappeared for no apparent reason just before attending Harvard. Given what I've discovered of the Michael Donnighal of this world and his deliberate murder, I'm inclined to track down as much as I can of why Mercer went into hiding or was forced into hiding." She swallowed, a frown still drawing lines on her forehead, and looked up to Cameron. "How do I go about asking the Asgard for their help on this?"

"The easiest way is to be beamed aboard the ship, but we'll have to get permission for that. It'll still be a day and a half before they return so if there are any other options or suggestions we've got some time to kill, might as well do what we can before they arrive."

Cam considered for a moment but shrugged, "You've done a computer search I assume?"

She nodded, "Steve looked around for me, but didn't find much more than I did." She bit her lip, thinking. "Is it possible he got off-planet somehow?"

In her mind it was difficult to reconcile a time with so little electronic surveillance that someone without the appropriate quantum powers would be able to so throughly disappear from records. Then again, this was Maxwell Mercer, and psiad, nova, or baseline, he, much like her other father, was not a man to underestimate.

Steve said, "Wait, time out. What's a psiad? What's a Hammersmith? And Max was a time jumper?"

"Off-planet so long ago?" Yseult pondered, a finger tapping her lips. "That seems very unlikely." Her eyes flicked from side to side as she searched her memory for any possibilities. "Technically, I suppose it is possible that Loki was conducting his experiments, even back then, and Maxwell Mercer came to his attention. Or that Mr. Mercer was fortunate - or unfortunate - enough to stumble across some forgotten tech left behind by the goa'uld or ancients, perhaps an Al'kesh or a device similar to the Quantum Mirror."

Yseult favoured Kyria with a dry smile. "Of course, this is all pure conjecture, like the possiblity of his ascension. I am curious as to why you would think 'Novas' and 'Psiads'? Novas and Psiads would not be able to produce offspring? Looking at test results, those affected by the Ascension Device have not differed enough, on a genetic level, to have trouble producing children with those who have not."

Yseult considered asking about Kyria's two fathers, but let it pass for now. She had already seen reliable experiments trying to produce a viable fetus from the ova of two women. With technology from the future, a child with two fathers should not have been difficult to produce.

Omar chuckles slightly. "It has been a long time Kyria since I have thought of Max. Max was not a nova, and I am sorry that your father told you otherwise. Now that I think about it, I don't think he was a psiad either. He had the unique ability to travel through time." Something came to mind and omar felt he had to share it.

"We were never sure if his abilty to time travel was related to Dr. Hammersmith's experiment, or whether it was something he had always posessed. If it was the latter, he might have that abilty here as well. It would explain his sudden disappearance."

Obviously the others had questions. "In 1923, a scientist by the name of Sir Calvin Hammersmith developed a device designed to tap into the fundamental energies of the Universe: Quantum and Sub-Quantum energies. It was going to be a powersource that would liberate all of humanity."

Omar looked at Steve and smiled at him misceviously. "You were there with us. Well it wasn't you but it was."

"Anyways, something went wrong, and the device exploded. Everyone present were exposed to high levels of Quantum energy. Micheal, Kyria's father was there. The explosion triggered his eruption. Max Mercer vanished, only to reappear years later. And because of the presence of novas at the time of the accident, an unstable element was introduced and in that timeline, Nova and Psiads began to appear decades earlier than they had in other timelines."

"But there was no Hammersmith, here, correct?" Olivia asked. She was leaning casually against the doorway, smiling a little. "Sorry to be late, I had someone corner me about something else.

Anyway, that incident didn't occur in this timeline, so Max Mercer in this timeline is likely just an 'average' person," Olivia said. "Unless you would have reason to think otherwise, I'd suggest focusing on the person."

She glanced at Kyria. "Between you and Omar, who knew him best? Which one of you would be able to 'get into his head' the best and make some informed guesses about what he might be doing in this life?"

At the mention of events in 1923 Cam had pulled out the Goa'uld datapad and started a search. Sure enough there was a Sir Calvin Hammersmith. He continued to read for a moment then spoke up after Olivia, "There was a Hammersmith here, but it looks like he got involved with researching dyes. Made quite a small fortune on some of the processes he patented, but then went bust during the stock market crash in 1929 and died a couple years later destitute."

This was getting confusing, the old Steve wouldn't have been able to see all the implications, even the new Steve struggled. *Hammersmith was the inventor of the nova process on their world... in 1923? And I was there? No, the other *I* was there. So Omar knew the other me... definitely follow that up later, they'd learn far too much if I start asking the wrong questions.*

*Hammersmith did his thing... and it spread. Maybe world wide, maybe just the city, but it didn't need direct contact, so it wasn't controllable. Everyone who could get it got it.* Steve was taken aback by this line of thought and the implications it drove.

*Wait, I'm missing something. If it was the nova creating thing...*

Steve asked, "Wait, what exactly is a Psiad? Did any of us who went through the device become psiads?"

"Psiads are another branch of human evolution. They use noetic or subquantum energy instead of quantum. They don't accrue taint and are immune to most things specifically tailored to affect novas. They're also not nearly as powerful as novas, and are far more mentally focused than novas." She frowned at Steve's second question and shook her head, "No, you all definitely use quantum. If any of you were Psiads, neither Omar nor I would be able to sense you, as that's a function of sensing the concentration of your quantum signature."

Returning to Olivia's question, Kyria motioned to Omar, "He probably knows more than I; I never met Mercer and the knowledge I have of him is from the memories of my father."

Steve followed the logic out loud, "Max wasn't a nova or psiad, but and the Hammersmith device created novas and/or psiads on a large scale. Max also had powers that could place him at the incident independently."

Steve continued, "Kyria, I wasn't going to phrase it this way but I think I will now. His record doesn't read like he dropped out of sight. His record reads like he just stopped existing. There's no record of him using money or any other resource. There's no record of him contacting anyone, and there's no record of any reason why he'd have to drop out of sight. No one was hunting him, there just didn't seem to be a point to it."

"Usually that means he just died, but no body has turned up and there's been enough time."

"If he wasn't a nova then seems to follow he didn't get his powers from Hammersmith. Thus Hammersmith going into dye research wouldn't have prevented him from... teleporting in time. Vanishing from reality."

"It never occurred to me this was even an option. I wonder... if we look up Hammersmith will we find that someone matching Max's description funded his dye research?"

"Good idea, but you're making the assumption that you have to find a body if he's dead," Olivia pointed out. "There are people who disappear and their bodies aren't found.

"The idea is a good one, but how do we track it other than by following through all the people he would have known. Did he try to help this universe's Omar? This universe's Steve, that being you... And if he was timehopping and helping Hammersmith, why go through all that trouble to fund him and then just let him die poverty-stricken?" Olivia shook her head. "It doesn't make sense to me, based on what we know. Plus, he could be anyone, he could have gone to the future and gotten cosmetic surgery, and could look like anyone. Where would we start?"

Link to comment

Cam frowned, "Unfortunately, short of time travel I don't think it will be possible to get a description of anyone who might have funded Hammersmith's dye research unless there is a published photo, and if it was Max then he certainly wouldn't have done something so obvious if he were trying to hide in the shadows. Besides he was 'Sir' Calvin Hammersmith, he probably didn't need outside funding."

Steve replied, "I'd been assuming that he was dead, that someone made him disappear, and maybe that is what happened. But if that's what happened then we have no investigation so let's assume that it didn't."

"We start... with him using his powers and us making computers do lots of work for us. How many Max Mercers have shown up in the system without linking records? Max has favorite places, he even has relatives, what records of a too-young Max Mercer show up in those towns?"

"For him to bother with cosmetic surgery implies there's someone after him, why should he think that? How many people looking like him have had absurd luck over the years? Do we have pictures of the top 100 lottery winners?"

"And yeah, if he jumped to the future and never came back, then we have no hope. For that matter if he jumped to the future, say 50 years from now, and then got run over by a car we have no hope."

"But you can't win if you don't play. It shouldn't be all that hard to send out some feelers."

Cam considered and then started keying in things on the datapad before looking up. "Ok, so Steve has some good points. There are lots of things that could have happened to Max that we'd never be able to determine so we'll focus on those areas of investigation that could turn up answers if he survived and remained in his own time, or at least times before the present. I've started some searches. Maybe Steve can do the same."

He paused for a minute then added, "Has anyone considered that he could have just simply taken on an assumed name and moved? Back in the those days there were no fingerprinting babies at birth and computer tracking of accounts. Disappearing would have been as easy as moving to another town and saying your name was John Smith. Of course that is about as untraceable as if he had died so perhaps we should eliminate that line of research too."

"Steve, I think you're getting ahead of yourself," Kyria said mildly. "If, in this universe, novas and psiads do not exist naturally, then it is not a logical conclusion that this Maxwell Mercer came into such powers, Hammersmith incident or no."

"Here is what we know: In this timeline, Maxwell Mercer disappeared in 1917 just before entered Harvard College as a freshman. He, so far as has been researched, was never seen or heard from again. Thus, in a major break from any other timeline I've ever seen or heard of, he never came into contact with Michael Donnighal. This universe's Michael went to medical school, became a doctor, and eventually had his murder arranged by someone through the manipulation of a group of bigoted and violent young men. At least one of these men was sent an anonymous and considerable sum of money shortly after Michael's death."

She shook her head and looked around at the others, "I've already had Steve look through all the records available to him stored on computers, and found nothing more after the reports and investigation into Mercer's disappearance. So, we're left with a few avenues of investigation: attempt to track down any non-digital records that may have survived, use the Asgard technology to search for Mercer's genetic signature, and canvass the abilities of the novas here in hopes of a person with psychometry. Unless I've overlooked any other options? That is why I asked for more people's help."

"And Cam just made my point, Steve: what feelers exactly?" Olivia said, her voice calm enough that it was clear that she was a bit annoyed and working on not showing it. "We tag everyone named Max Mercer, but why would he keep using that name if he doesn't want to be found? In 1923, it would be easy to change you name and fade into the background. You can do it, with effort, today. It'd be a hundred times easier to do it eighty years ago."

She sighed and now she did sound annoyed. "You don't eliminate lines research just because they're unresearchable; you leave them there because they're still possibilities. And as for searches, we're trying to find someone who can be anyone anywhere at anytime. Unless we have some parameters for the search, we're going to get back every living male of the right age and ethnicity as a return. And that's leaving out the chance he's time traveling, which means we can search on gender and ethnicity alone."

After Kyria had spoken, Olivia shook her head. "Non-digital records require us to know where to look. Mercer might have gotten a little farm somewhere, and he might be recorded in that county's assessor's office, but we won't know to look there. Or if he used Max Mercer. We don't even know why he disappeared. It's too bad we don't have a device that allows psychometry; one of us may have it, but I don't know that they do.

That was interesting. Some unknown person arranged for Donnighal to be murdered then sent the murdered a large sum of money. "I assume the money was sent in cash and not as a bank transfer?" Seeing Kyria's nod, Cam pursed his lips in thought.

"It's a shame things weren't computerized until recently. It's like we're operating under the fog of war. Everything in the past is unclear and shrouded because there just weren't good records kept. If this investigation was for something happening now, Steve and I would be able to pin them down in a matter of hours."

Aradia hadn't been issued an invitation to the research, for Kyria had wisely assumed it wouldn't be the circus performer's type of "thing". However, Aradia - like several of the other specialists - had a day off today. And after looking around for Livy, and then Yseult, and then anyone really, she was finally pointed towards the direction of the other specialists. She knocked on the door quietly, and opened it.

"Hey.. um.. what's going on? Anything I should know about?"

Kyria nodded a yes to Steve and gave Aradia a quick update on what she was trying to do and the (tiny) amount of progress they'd made so far. "I think at this point our best option is the Asgard and the genetic scan. If that doesn't turn up anything, then this'll probably be a long and drawn out process if we choose to still try and track him down."

She nodded to Cameron, "Can you arrange for me and anyone else that's interested in getting a chance to speak with the Asgard aboard the Prometheus?"

"We know that in the other timelines, Micheal Dohnigal was a crafty individual. Could it be that he and Mercer did meet, and come down with a scheme to fake Michael's death? Back then, such a feat would be realtively easy to accomplish." It was a hunch, and from what Omar knew of the two of them, it was something that was not beyond plausable.

"Though such behavior does not fit Max's personality. In the other timelines that I knew him, he was an intelligent, good and thoughtful man. Though in this universe, he could be the incarnation of Hitler- if his childhood conditions were different."

"We might try to find who received the money and who sent it. Most banks keep records going way back. it might require some leg work as the files are probably still on paper and not electronic. As for the Asgard: We might not want to get them involved just yet. We may have to call on a favor for something far more serious. No offense meant Kyria.""

"Which bank?" Olivia said harshly, looking at Omar. "I don't think you're getting it yet. What bank was the withdraw made from? The man was paid in cash, which is untraceable by the means available back then. How do we know the money wasn't laundered through a shady business? The mob was still big then. And if it was a bank, how do we know what bank the cash was generated from?"

Olivia shook her head. "This isn't something that we can trace easily. We'll need to prove that we can be looking at old records, and we'll need to know the sum and where the cash came from before we can even start to look for the person responsible, if that's even Mercer."

She took a deep breath and said, "Sorry to get so agitated, but you are all very used to computer searches where a program does all the work. Paper records are different. And we can't call a bank and ask them for their withdraw records. That's confidential information. If it's that old, the chances are the records are now destroyed; they might be microfiched. That's if we're lucky and if the banks didn't have a fire or a flood or someone who shredded choice documents. We're not looking for a needle in a haystack; we're looking for a needle in a field of fresh-cut hay."

Cam thought about it but couldn't see any reason not to ask. "No I think it will be fine to ask to use the genetic scan. The one stationed aboard the Prometheus is there for us to make use of their technology. They haven't put any restrictions on that, only on not letting us have their tech without supervision."

"I'll go to General Landry right now and make the request. If anyone else turns up and wants to go along for the ride let me know."

Cam headed out the door and down the elevator to the next to lowest level on the base where the General's office was. In just a few minutes he had explained their request and the General sat back in his chair. "I don't see any harm in letting the young lady perform her search. Just be sure that if you find him that no one violates their NDA."

Cam dialed the room where the group was meeting. "The General has given us a go. Once the Prometheus returns we can perform the scan."

Kyria smiled at the news, her gloomy and contentious attitude melting away now that she knew they'd get to pursue the best chance they had come up with so far. "Okay, then why don't we put the rest on hold, as it'll be a big pain and time consuming at best, and everyone who's interested in going on with this meet me....hmmm. In the Gate room two days from now?"

She was fairly glowing with hope and excitement; she flipped off the monitor and gathered up her notes, "In the meantime, I'm gonna swim for a bit and then get some dinner in town. Everyone's welcome to come along." With that she headed out, hoping the next two days would go by quickly.

Two days later Gwyn was the first in the Gateroom for the 'Prometheus Express'. He had missed the initial discussion due to a pre-arranged sparring session with Major Hawke, but Colonel Mitchell had brought him up to speed in the meantime. So he waits in his standard BDU's, checking his laptop, PDA and spare batteries as the others start to arrive.

The next two days seemed to fly by like it was just minutes.

Since the search if it produced any results would mean going someplace on Earth the word was passed around to show up in Civvies in stead of the standard BDUs. Cam took advantage of it to wear a comfortable pair of jeans a button down shirt and a nice pair of boots. He thought that would be suitable for a wide range of possible destinations and it was nice to not wear the BDUs for a change.

In the gateroom once everyone was assembled Cam called for everyone's attention. "Ok team listen up. I know this is a mission to find someone for personal reasons, but we are using official resources so to that end I've temporarily drafted all of you into SG1 for a 'training' mission to familiarize you all with the Prometheus and it's systems. To that end I will be responsible so even though this is a fun outing keep in mind that you are still representatives of the SGC and the NDA is very much in force. Be careful what you do if we end up in some public place. Thanks."

Having given his little speech he signaled Walter in the control room to relay to the Prometheus that they were assembled and ready for transport.

Cam loved the beaming technology of the Asgard, there weren't any particular sensations for him but there was just something about traveling several thousand miles in an instant that appealed to the pilot in him. Looking to the others he grinned, "We're here. First thing first. Lets take a tour of the ship to fulfill our mission objective then we can ask the nice Asgard here our question." He nodded his head to the little grey alien standing behind the console. Said alien just blinked and said nothing.

The tour took nearly an hour but even those not terribly interested in military warships couldn't help but enjoy learning about the ship and it's capabilities. It felt good to know that Earth was capable of producing it's own space craft that could compete with the Goa'uld.

Back in the hyperdrive room where the transporter and Asgard were located the group gathered to commence their real reason for being here. "I'm Colonel Cameron Mitchell, and we would like you to do us a favor if you wouldn't mind."

The little grey alien raised an eyebrow and spoke, "I am Heimdall. What sort of favor do you seek?"

Cam gestured to Kyria to continue.
