Aberrant: Stargate Universe - Joint training exercise leads to Conspiracy

From his conversation with O'Neill the day before the mission he had an idea that the ever present General would be gone when they returned so he wasn't as surprised as everyone else, but even so it was going to be an adjustment. According to O'Neill his most likely replacement would be a General named Landry. A good guy, but very by the book, which in a situation like this might be just what was needed. The IOA would have a hard time messing with a man like that and according to O'Neill he would be the President's first pick which would make him even less vulnerable to their manipulations.

That was the good news. The bad news was that with O'Neill gone it was going to be harder to move against the IOA if it became necessary. O'Neill had a history with them and understood just how devious and underhanded they could be. On the bright side he had given approval for a joint training exercise at the Beta Site for all specialist teams under Cam's authority as leader of SG1. In effect the other three teams would all become part of SG1 for the day and Cam would lead them through for a big exercise designed to forge them into a single coherent unit. At least that was the plan as presented to the General and approved by him. Cam intended to do that, but far more than that.

Two days passed since the last of the teams returned from the previous mission and today was the big day. The teams had been informed to muster out at 07:00 for briefing and be geared up and ready to go by 08:00. Briefing had been over breakfast in the mess hall since this was 'just a training exercise'. Cam had purposefully held the mission briefing in a public way so that anyone could listen in on all the details. Let the IOA snoop all they wanted on this side of the gate, this casual breifing would alay any suspicions they might have. What happened on the other side was what counted.

After breakfast and grabbing their gear from the armory, in this case Ingtars, Zats, and P90s the big 12 man SG1 team assembled in the gateroom for what looked to be a standard trip. On the gateroom floor however was something unexpected for a simple training exercise. The FRED was packed and loaded down with supplies. As the gate coalesced in it's always impressive light show Cam grinned. One way or another this was going to be fun.

Kyria was excited. She hadn't had a chance to see all the novas together like this, or to meet this 'Cam' she'd been hearing about. She listened to the briefing and politely kept to her own head while she ate her usual breakfast of brownies and doughnuts. She hoped whatever kind of exercise this was going to be that the people who had put it together kept in mind that they were designing for over a dozen novas; she wanted a chance to stretch herself out and see how the others reacted to really being tested as well.

Geared up and ready to go in the gate room, she gave her commander-for-the-day a quizzical grin and motioned her head to the FRED. "'We going somewhere new?"

On the SGC side of the gate Cam just gave Kyria a grin. Once through the gate he said with a smile, "New to all of us. Welcome to the Beta Site. If Earth ever gets invaded or falls to Goa'uld we would retreat to the Alpha Site where we have a secondary SGC facility. If that too were compromised we'd be sent here to the Beta Site. Both Alpha and Beta sites are not part of the Goa'uld known addresses so should be safe from discovery."

Yseult had witnessed so many changes since being captured my the NID. She had been forced into a new body, had gained fantastic new powers, had met several people who also had preternatural abilities, and had gone on a mission to help people free themselves of their overseeing Jaffa. Generel Hammond and Generel O'Neill were both gone, and she was learning to deal with the new Generel Landry, as well as her new responsibilities as a member of a SG team.

Cameron had gathered the three specialist SG teams for a joint training session at the Beta Site. Considering the work they had done on by-passing the base network security, and the new power structure, Yseult had definite suspicions about the true purpose for the trip to the Beta Site.

Seeing all the specialists in one spot, Yseult grew aware of just how far they were growing from humanity. Damien, Courier, and, she blushed with uncomfortable awareness, young looking Kyria were all more attractive and socially dynamic then any movie star. Omar, Ryan, and Cam moved with inhuman ease, their strength and grace incredible. Aradia's hair sublty shifted style and colour with her excitement. Olivia seemed both unfocused and intuitively aware of everything around her, and beyond.

Stepping through the gate, Yseult wondered how far they, herself included, would be willing to go in the endeavor that Cam was going to propose.

Ryan was relatively at ease. He'd been away during the change of command, but in the end the orders were legit. Still, it was very uncommon to collect all the Specialists together like this, and Ryan wondered what exactly Cam was up to.

When Yesult stepped through the gate Ryan shrugged and followed. He nodded to Cam and Kyria when he stepped through and looked around. "To boldly go where no one has gone before.." It was another world like Alpha Site.

He looked to Cam and seemed to be assessing him, seemingly satisfied with whatever he found he chuckled. So the whole gang's coming along eh? This must be pretty big, Sir."

Cam had usually dispensed formalities, and as a habbit, Ryan did too when not in the field. He waited to here Cam's response and preparing to snap to attention should the need arise.

O'Neil had been family, almost. He had been the commander when he had started and he felt his abscence. Not that he held anything against Landry. He was standard Air Force and not part of the SGC before this, so it was too much to expect the Old Man to be up to speed yet. Still, he was no Jack O'Neil, not yet.

This mission being approved was something that Caine found ... odd. Almost all the Specialist on one mission away from Earth. It was more than just three SG teams. It was the three best SG teams. Putting them all in one basket was something. Was it a good something, or a bad something?

All he could do now to keep his feverish mind on task was to watch over his team, and Yseult for some reason. Something about her aura of loss pulled at his heart. Never mind that now, though. Colonel Cameron had a purpose to pull them all into SG-1, but what could it be? Did he had some desire to see us all in action and did this foreshadow some new a new level of leadership for the teams?

Omar had begun to feel, and look like his self of old. While he was no longer able to grow to mammoth proportions, he did notice his appearance had returned to it's former grandeur. Just looking in the mirror, Omar could see his features had subtily become more defined and handsome, and his already imposing size looked even larger. Though the change was subtle, Omar recognized it. For him, inspiring awe in others was as much about fear and intimidation as it was about inspiring someone to a higher ideal.

Omar saw his old friend Kyria and walked over to her. He smiled and gave her a brief hug. "How have you been?" Omar asked, as he pulled away. There was genuine concern in his voice.

Olivia had been quiet since her return from her last mission. Getting back to find that O'Neill and Hatchins were gone had been a hard blow. Since then, she'd lapsed into a hard silence, saying little. Even Vinny or Damien couldn't cajole more than a word or two out of her.

Olivia was angry. She was angry that she'd trusted O'Neill, only to have him leave. She was angry that she'd trusted her stupid plan to get the IOA; she'd badly overreached. She was really angry that Hatchins was off scott-free, wherever he was, and probably somewhere hurting and scaring women. But mostly, she was angry at herself, for letting her chance to see Hatchins put away slip past her.

She followed the rest of the crew through the gate, walking a kind of a no-man's land between the rest of SG-21 and Vinny. As always, Aradia was there with her. Olivia had noticed that she'd been in a bad mood as well and made a note to ask her about it as soon as Olivia could handle someone else's problems.

Wondering what the hell Cam wanted, Olivia waited to be told what to do.

Aradia was not in the mood to be here. She wasn't really in the mood to be anywhere, other than back in her room slamming shit around for a few hours, but she had already done that the day after she got back, when she realized that Hatchins was gone. And to be honest, she didn't have that much shit to slam around.

Fortunately, other than Olivia, who also seemed to be in a bad mood.. most likely due to whatever thing had been going on with Team 21 and Hatchins going down the drain as swiftly as her and Wakiki's own plans for him had. At least, that's what Aradia figured it had to be. She couldn't think of anything else.

Her only real decision now lay in whether or not to tell Wakiki that she had found him, and who he was. On one hand, she was eager to sic Wakiki and his private investigator on the situation, but on the other hand her stomach twisted in knots at picturing what Wakiki would say when he found out she'd had him - they could have had him.. and she let him slip through their fingers. She had no doubt he was going to be furious, though whether at her or not she had no idea. Waki was normally pretty laid back, but about this.. she just didn't know.

So she walked through the gate and hung out with Olivia, waiting impatiently for whatever this was to begin. She had been avoiding people since yesterday, which had been fairly easy since usually only Olivia went out of her way to come talk to her, and Livy wasn't in such a peachy mood either. Since she had found out, her hair and eyes had been shifting ever so slightly between different shades as a result of her barely concealed rage at the cards fate had dealt her this particular go around. It was one of the reasons she hadn't called Wakiki yet to let him know she was back. Until she could get her temper under control, she couldn't let him see her like this anyway.

Gwyn joined his team in the gate room and raised an eyebrow at Cam when he spotted the FRED piled with supplies, but after a moments thought he realised that even with the amount on the FRED it would probably only last the number of Specialist collected here a few days at most.

Having helped Cam with Ra's Data terminal and seen him and Steve putting the secret web line into place Gwyn felt that something of this meeting was going to involve Cam's ideas and concerns about the IOA.

Livy was in a major mood having found Hatchins had gone when we returned from the last mission. The rest of the team had been pissed off as well, but more philosophical about it in general, but for Olivia is was obviously more personal. Considering the way the way that Ari seemed to be in a bad mood as well Gwyn wondered anew if Ari had had plans for Hatchins as well.

Regardless of that now that Hatchins was of no use against the IOA Gwyn felt no need for him to keep breathing. He would have a go at tracing his whereabouts when they got back, either on his own or with the help of Cam or Steve. A relatively simple way of getting rid of Hatchins had occurred to him during the recent incident with the Orb/bomb that linked itself to Olivia. If Gwyn could reach space on his own, something he might test here at the Beta site, then he could simply take him up and let him go. The body would likely burn up on re-entry, a cheap, clean and efficient method of disposal. The thought brought a grim smile to Gwyn's face as they waited for their turn to go through the gate.

Once through the gate Gwyn moved out to quickly check the perimeter before returning to join the group collected around Colonel Mitchell.

When the call came for the teams to meet up, Simms was excited. He hadn't really had a chance to work or see any of the other team members since joining up with SG-23. Simms watched the other's gathered around the gate room and nodded to each member that he knew, and also to ones that were new to him. Simms was surprised about the departure of O'Neill. He had come to really respect the man and it was sad to see him go. Col Mitchell had proven himself just as capable a leader, which made the transition that much easier to bear.

Hoisting his staff weapon Simms followed Hawke through to the Beta site, curious about what the Col had in store for them.

Noah stood in the milling crowd of Specialists, close to his team but not really part of it. He was lost in his own thoughts as the gate activated. General O'Neil was transfering out and a new General, General Landry was being transferred in. He wasn't sure how he felt about that. He didn't know O'Neil all that well but the man had done right by him when he was picked up at that NID compound with the others. He would still be sitting in a cell if it weren't for him. On the other hand, he'd heard stories about this General Landry from his father. This man played by the rules. He'd probably bring some much needed order to this place.

In the end it really didn't matter much; O'Neil was gone and Landry was here. He'd adjust just like he adjusted to every command change he'd ever had. Noah stepped through the gate with the others and waited with military patience to be told what was really going on.

Cam was pleased to see that even coming to this supposedly safe world that several of the specialists immediately did perimeter checks and the other things you should always do when going through the gate. They were the military trained ones, and it was to be expected from them. Even the others for the most part looked curiously about themselves which was also good. Had their been hostile forces about they would have been aware.

Once the gate shut down and everyone was settled Cam hopped up on the Fred so everyone could easily see and hear him. "Ok, folks, here's the plan. We're going to move to the area that has been scouted as a possible base." Turning to Major Hawke, "Major I want you to establish a perimeter a quarter of a mile out from the designated site once we arrive. Sweep the area for hostiles. Take Specialist's Donnighal and Courier with you. Ensure no others present and no electronic devices of any kind in the area."

Looking to the rest of the group, "Everyone else, we will spend from now until 13:00 hours working to clear the site utilizing any and all special abilities to facilitate the process. Aside from food and water, the FRED has tools of all kinds, axes, shovels, picks, machetes, etc. But first, I'd like Specialist Jones to take me aloft for a aerial view of the lay of the land just to insure they did choose the best possible spot. In the mean time Major Caine, you take the FRED and the rest of group to the coordinates on the map. Everyone take a good look around and see if there is anything that would rule the place out as a good base. The engineers tend to know what they are doing so I doubt we'll find they've made a mistake, but this is a chance for you guys to stretch yourselves with no one to observe. After lunch we'll move on to other matters, but first we establish our camp and clear the land."

Cam did his best to keep a straight face as some of the less military inclined specialists realized that they were going to have to get their hands dirty. He didn't stick around to listen to any grumbling that might occur. He wanted to confirm what he expected so moved immediately to Jones, "Gwyn, I hope you don't mind carrying me aloft." Seeing that he didn't mind the two took off making a slow circuit of the terrain in the area. The site of the base was optimal. There was a good sized river nearby but it butted up against a rise in the ground to the west which was were the base was planned to be The area of the base itself was actually surrounded on two sides by hills and the drop off to the river on the other side. The hills made a bit of an arc and cut between the site and the stargate so anyone coming through the gate would be oblivious to the presence of the base while those on lookout would easily be able to see new arrivals. All in all it was a choice site.

(Apologies for the crudeness of the drawing, but I thought it might help to illustrate the lay of the land.)

((OOC: You guys can post as you wish about the morning's work but that is just the set up for the meeting that Cam wants to have with the specialists. I'll give you guys a day to post what you do or conversations etc, and if things aren't moving along I'll move it forward to the meeting.))

"Alright people, it's this way. Lt. Weston, here are the coordintates we are heading for. Take point. Is there anyone else you want with you? I suggest Speicailist McConnell."

"Captian Wright, tail end Charlie. Make sure no one gets left behind and everyone keeps up."

"Doctor Sierra, you are medical. Anyone have problem, talk to the Sierra."

"Doctor Jenings-Izumi - Doc - you drive the Fred. Rear of the column."

"Simms, you are middle fo the column. Move were you are needed."

"Captain Omar, you are up front with me, but since I like to move around, keep us on course."

"Everyone know were they need to be? Note, once we are out in the field, I tend to use first names. Get used to it. My name is still Caine."

"Yes Sir!" Noah salutes sharply to the Major then turns to Aradia. "Specialist McConnell? Lt. Noah Weston."

He offers the pretty acrobat his hand and flashes her a smile that could melt ice before he turns to head off in the direction of the proposed camp. "You ready?" he asks as he engages his Chameleon Field.

Aradia took Noah's hand, and shook it. She didn't seem to have the handshake of someone with super-strength, but it was a firm handshake nonetheless, and confident. He could see when he had turned to her that she looked surly or in a bad mood about something, but under the handsome Lieutenant's it wilted a little, and changed from surly and annoyed to serious, at least.

She studied him for a long moment, her lips pressing together. Then, without any change in expression other than a slight narrowing of her eyes, Aradia's skin and clothing shifted. Her shape didn't change in any way, but her coloring, skin, and outfit all became almost an exact mirror of Noah's coloration.

"Yes sir." Omar said as he moved closer to the the Major. Unlike the others, Omar did not salute. Omar reasoned that since they were on a mission, and tactical parameters were in play, that you didn't salute. Saluting a superior officer in the field made that person a target for snipers. Omar figured that he needed to treat it as an actual mission. If the major wanted Omar to do otherwise, he would voice it.

"Major?" Omar asked once he was at the major's side. "Did you want me to activate my running ability, should we need it?"

"Okay, so.. we're on point, right? That means everyone's following us, which means that we're just trying to.. make our way there? See if we see anything that doesn't look right, or could be a problem with having the base around? God, I don't even know what I'm doing."

She shook her head a little and rolled her eyes in annoyance (though not at Noah), but fell into step with him, trying to mimic his actions as best she could, though with perhaps somewhat less practiced precision.

After they walked together a bit,

"Omar, I'm a big believer you blast your way out of an ambush, not hunker down. So, by all means, cut on the super-running if the situation necessitates. I admit I chose you as point because you are so damn tough and level-headed."

"I don't know my point-people well enough to become slack with them around. I'm sure they are good, but reading up on them is not as good as knowing. You agree?"

Waiting on a reply and knowing that Omar had eyes forward, Caine looked back to see how well the rest of his team was moving along.

Yseult followed alongside the FRED that Olivia was handling, keeping herself close to the medical supplies, in case they ended up being needed. If she didn't seem perfectly at ease travelling in the woods, her stride was still steady and her breathing even, Yseult's fine-tuned figure compensating for her lack of familiarity. Her hand stayed close to her Zat, her eyes hidden by the tinted lenses of her stylish Prada sunglasses.

Gwyn happily obliged Cam, "Sure thing Colonel, how high and how fast? I'd suggest I keep it down to 60mph or less, otherwise you'll start losing the contents of your pockets and stuff."

With that he took off with the senior officer tucked under one arm, having gone dense to make sure he had plenty of strength to hold the man through any necessary manoeuvers. As they moved up into the air there was a distinct difference in their appearance, Cam's clothing was being whipped about as the air rushed past them, while Gwyn's looked little different than when he was standing on the ground.

After some minutes to scout the area Gwyn puts them down back at the head of the column next to Caine and Omar.

He gave her a reasuring smile, which looked wierd and more than a little comical in his current camoflagued condition. "You've basically got the idea. We scout ahead for anything that could be dangerous to the team. Traps & tripwires, enemy soldiers, wild animals, dangerous terrain. Kyria sauntered off with her assigned group, her good mood undaunted by the negative vibes of some of the others. She hoped that Stargate Command had finally come understand that the novas in their midst would need their own place to be novas, and that an underground bunker just wasn't enough room. Despite her cheery mood, she kept an eye out on her surroundings even as her mind ventured farther afield in search of other minds that shouldn't be there.

Olivia nodded at Caine's orders and stepped up behind the FRED. Lifting the control remote from its holder on the back of the machine, she looked over the controls and refreshed her memory of how to work them. As the others started to move, she flicked her thumbs and the FRED began to purr, rolling forward.

From there, she was mindlessly following the others, driving the FRED with a minimum of brain power.

The column had made it to the top of the hill by the time Gwyn and Cam returned and sat down. The hill wasn't a difficult climb and the FRED hadn't even needed to be carried. Looking ahead the Specialists could see that they were looking down over a valley that stretched about a mile to another line of hills to the north. Cam pointed out to Caine and the others as they gathered to enjoy the view, "In the valley down there next to the river is the site we're going to clear for the base. The river is actually pretty wide but you can't see the whole thing from here because there is a drop off of about 50 feet from where you see the treeline stop down to the edge of the water. The base will be high and dry but have easy access to all the water we need." Looking at the group, "Ok breaks over, I want us down there and unloading the gear in 30 minutes."

One hour from that moment found the entire group in a small clearing among the trees near the river with all the tools unpacked and a table with a map of the area laid out and the team gathered round. "Ok folks, to start with we want to clear the ground for a 200 meter perimeter from this spot. Keep a line of trees along the drop off down to the river to keep up the appearance from the ground that nothing has changed. We want no trees on the base site itself and for a distance surrounding us. Once we get the ground clear we'll set up our camp for the night. There are several large tents among the supplies we've brought with us. After we head back from our training exercise here the SGC will be sending actual engineers with equipment in here to lay foundations for buildings and put up the structures for the permanent base."

Cam was pretty happy with the place, it was scenic and pleasant and not too many bugs around. This world didn't seem to have mosquitoes and that was a big plus in his book.

"This location will end up being a mirror of the alpha site in terms of functionality. We'll leave building the runway for the regular engineers. Alright folks, Major Caine will coordinate the effort and I'll observe and lend a hand where needed. Part of the point of this is to let you all do what you do to the best of your abilities without any restrictions and see how well the entire group can work together on a simple task. You've all got till 13:00 hours to clear the ground that's 4.5 hours from now. I think we can do it." Turning to Major Caine, "Major organize the team and get them moving please."

"I agree. I like to know how a person reacts under pressure. It is in those moments that a person's true character emerges." Omar smiled, knowing that the major had confidence in him. "Most of them will rise to the occasion. Those who don't had better learn."

"There is a quote that I heard long ago: 'Experience keeps a dear school, but fools will learn in no other.'"

Kyria grinned at the Major and gamely stepped up. "What would you like me to do? I can carry trees, act as a coordinator, or....." She shrugged, "Whatever else."

It was obvious that the young telepath was having a good day and being much more relaxed and open, here amongst only novas, than she usually was on the base.

"First off, Olivia copy Yseult's powers. Next," he grins to Kyria," Hawke, Kyria, Noah, Omar - knock down the trees I designate. Once you moved them to this," he points to a spot about 20 meters from the area they are at, "and stack them up. When the trees are down, make them into lumber.

"Yseult and Oliva, as the trees go down, rip up the stumps and put them by the trees. Then I want you to level out the land in an area we will be staking out."

"Gwyn, you and I will be organizing the engineering work for getting this sight up."

"Vinny, Simms, and Aradia, clear out the underbrush and work it into a perimeter obstruction. I'll set up the perimeter."

"Okay, question?"

Looking over the tools provided, Kyria frowned for the first time that day. They'd sent them with good tools, but nothing they had could really stand up to nova-level strength for very long. She sat down next to the pile of good intentions and thought for several long moments then called out, "Hey, Omar, Noah, Hawke; we'll mess these things up pretty good on the first few trees if we try using them at full strength. How about we all team up and just pick the trees up together out of the ground? We should be able to do it without splitting the trees, that way we can cut them however we want later, and we'll be digging up the ground anyways so bringing up part of the root systems before they snap shouldn't be more than annoying for us keeping our balance. No stumps to deal with either, that way. Sound okay?"

Ryan nodded to Caine's plan and then to Kyria. "We can do that, but I want you to do a scan every hour or so, just in case."

He looks to Courier. "I need you to sweep the entire area for any electronic devices that aren't ours."

He next addressed Noah. "Noah I want you out on Patrol for the time being. Your job is to stay hidden and find anything we miss."

"Let's go see how effctive our abilities make us at being lumberjacks."

The young major's mood had brightened. Tohgh he and Caine held the same rank, he easily deferred to him as senior within SGC, and armed with orders and a chance to cut loose, he was out to enjoy himself.

Yseult watched the preternaturally strong specialists tear up the trees, stump and all, her attention unconsciously lingering an extra moment on Kyria's slender form. What is it like, to feel such strength through your own hands? Shrugging away the thought, Yseult focused her own will on the trees. If they were going to remove trees, stump and all, she would as well.

With the groan and creak of wood and the rumble of shifting dirt, the bigger trees began to be ripped up from the ground of their own accord, traveling in unsupported phalanxes to the area designated by Major Caine.

Yseult's stance was straight and rigid, hands fisted at her side, as she exerted the gift she had been granted. Her eyes were bright and wide, the vivid turquoise colour of her irises nearly obscuring the white of the sclera. Olivia nodded again to Caine, being unnaturally silent as she accepted her orders with question. She moved over to Yseult and touched her, and then started to work. Yseult's turquoise eyes stood out starkly in her dark face. With all the other exotic features she had, it was almost too much, pushing her past exotic to eerie. Unaware of how she looked, Olivia focused on work and quickly learned that she wasn't nearly as impressive with it as Yseult was. Sighing in aggrivation, she focused on the smaller trees, or aiding others in their attempts to rip up trees and brush.

What the fuck is this shit, not a fuckin' bulldozer. Fuckers can clear the site with equipment, not a fuckin' ass-tard chainsaw. Seriously, who is the fuck-shit who thought up this assinine mission? They have enlisted for this shit. Didn't become a fuckin' Officer to clear land. Fuckin' SG-Greenacres bullshit.

Vinny grabbed a chainsaw, making sure to take the time to gear up with all the necessary safety equipment, leggings, glasses, hearing protection, hardhat and gloves. He would have went for the hearing protection anyway, the groaning of the trees being ripped out of the ground was like a Greenpeace nightmare.

Not waiting for the others on his 'team', he walked over to an area already massacred and fired up the Stihl.

When Major Caine volunteers him for overseeing the Engineering of the site Gwyn holds both hands up, "Sorry Major, you got the wrong guy. I could have a stab at it and do a reasonable job, but my engineering experience is mainly with electronics etc. Unless you count Ancient to Medieval fortifications. I believe that civil engineering - buildings, bridges and the like is Captain Wright's area of engineering. He would give you better advice for this job." He nods over to where an obviously irritated Vinny is stalking off with a chainsaw.

Seeing the other superstrong Specialists ripping the trees up he shakes his head, "They'll still need to cut a stump off the bottom else they'll never get them to stack with half the root system still attached. I guessI'll go do that and take Vinny's place on the underbrush while he comes and advises you Major."

With Caine's permission he heads over to where the trees are being stacked, activating the additional increased density on his hands. On arriving he starts hacking off the roots and major branches with his hands, to leave a stackable main trunk and piles of other sized branches and debris.

Omar looked at Kyria. "I can just push them over. It would be a lot faster for me than to pull them up." Omar walks over to a tree as an example. He placed both hands on it and with an effortless looking shove, pushed the giant tree over. Ther were snaps and a giant groan as the root system pooped out of the earth in a shower of dirt.

"I can knock over 5 or 6 of the big trees in a minute." Omar moved to where another large tree stood and gave it a shove. It too came crashing down in a catapult of earth.

Simms nodded and went to work with the others careful not to get in the way of Cpt Wright and his chainsaw. Simms wasn't sure that making all that noise was a good thing, but he was the low man on the totem pole out here and any suggestions he made were probably going to get shot down. That was the only problem with officers, they never take the time to think things through.

Clearing out the underbrush wasn't hard, but it was enough to work up a good sweat. It had been some time since he had done any type of work like this and he found himself rather enjoying it. After a bit Simms turned to Cpt Wright "Anytime you need a break let me know sir, I'll take over for you."

The ground was quickly being cleared. Caine knew a twelve man team of Special forces werent a tenth as fast, and they would be a team with lots of experience working together. This was a bunch of groups of four (three in his case).

When the last tree fell, the permiter had been marked out and the ground nearly cleared, Caine called out his next orders.

"Ryan, Vinny, Simms, and Olivia. Ryan, two patrols circling the camp between twenty five and fifty meters out."

Omar, Noah, Gwyn, Kyria, Yseult - let's plane these boards. I'll show you how."

He pulled out some wedges and a flat-backed hatchet.

"Cam, Aradia, I've staked out the camp site. Six two man tents, three by two along the crest of this little ridge here (and it was a little ridge). Command tent at the top."

Walking over to the 'Planing' team, Caine layed out his plan.

"We are going to plane these boards - turning these trees into four x sixes, eight feet long. We are going to stack them one on top of the other surrounding the camp and back them with a two foot think, four foot high berm of earth. There will be a three foot ditch on the other side. We will use wooden pegs to keep this the boards together and logs at the connecting points to support the wall."

At the mention of legs he pointed ot the upper portion of the trees, as well as the smaller ones.

"We will have wooden small wooden gates at the top," motioning to the position the command tent was to take, " and bottom. In essence it will be a Vauban style fortification designed to resist Staff blasts and Zats, as well as small arms fire. A determined enemy can get over the wall, but they will be slowed enough we should be able to shoot them a few times."

He takes up the spike and the hatchet,

"Now the art of planing a board."

And so it began, with all their years of experince, training, and education, they were hands-on lumberjacks.
