Aberrant: Stargate Universe - Conscientious Objection [Complete]

Olivia thought a lot about many things. Her recovered memories from the pentagon were no exception. After her prodigious memory had sealed them away, she had no more trouble drawing them up than she did anything else. She had had time to absorb them, though that had been difficult. Absorbing them had been difficult; they were all painful, but she'd handled it well, or well enough.

But it had caused another problem, and it was one Olivia intended to address today. She moved through the hallway past the officer's offices. Vinny got a wave through his open door, though his head was bent over his work and he didn't see. She paused at the door to Damien's office and knocked.

"Come in," he called and she poked her head in.

"Major, do you have a moment?" The use of his rank should let him know that she was here on SG business, not pleasure.

Caine put down the physical fitness reports, knowing a glowing report for Declan wouldn't help him get back to the unit anytime sooner. It was a depressing situation to know there was little more he could do with the psychiatrists. He had already gone to his lead psychiatrist, but been told as much.

It was into these bitter thoughts that Olivia stumbled. He put Declan's situation aside and awaited what new and interesting twist she could bring to his life.

"Sure thing, Livy. What can I do for you?"

His mood was serious, but there was the light of friendship in his eyes as he looked at her. He certainly looked happy to see her.

Olivia smiled. This was the reason that SG-21 was the best team, in her opinion. She, Declan and Rorx may have been the best support members, but Damien was the one who held them together. "Well, I have a matter to be addressed before the next mission," Olivia said. He waved her into a chair and she sat before speaking again.

"Major, you know that I've long been a pacifist," Olivia started. Her prepared statement rolled off her tongue easily. "Up until now, I've been suppressing those beliefs in order to function with the unit. But I have decided that it isn't necessary to do that, that I can still do my martial duty as a member of this team and adhere to my beliefs. With the zats, I don't have to use the P90, and I think that its extra weight is unnecessary.

"I know this seems odd to you, sir," she added, spreading her hands a little in supplication. "But when I was facing the Unas and I realized they were really sentient, I wasn't sure I could shoot them. And if I was hesitating in front of such an alien being, then I'm sure I'd have an even harder time if I were in front of something that looked totally human. But if I knew that one shot wouldn't hurt it, I could act freely."

"One of the braves soldiers I ever met was a navy corpmen with a marine detachment I was with. He felt the same way. Well, actually he was in the Navy to get enough money for medical school, but he was a CO - Concientious Objector. He pointed out to us gun-toting members that what mattered was how well you could do your job within the unit."

"I don't see why we can't have you declared a CO. I'll start on the paperwork in," he looks at his watch, " a half hour. I'll bring them over for you to sign then I'll submit them to Personal and Requsitions. You'll be getting one of the team zats and maybe it will earn us one dedicated just for you."

"How does that sound?"

"That sounds great," Olivia said, relaxing a little. "I wasn't sure if you'd understand... I mean, I figured that you would, once we spoke on it. I just wasn't sure if you'd agree so quickly." Her smile faded. "I have a question - what am I to do if we run into something that isn't affected by a zat? What would be the game plan then?"

"Well, the technology is similar, but we coudl try Intar equipment as a back up. If you weren't a CO, I would suggest a sidearm. Since you are, maybe a taser would be in order. Outside of that, work on your hand to hand and handweapon skills. Mainly, you need to have something that will buy you time until someone will get to you."

"If you replace us military types, we will feel left out. That's not joke. If you can do it all, it gets hard to justify keeping you on our team. So, don't worry about it. We adapt and overcome variations in what a normal SG team has to go through. We are Specialists after all. Even if we weren't, a CO is something we have to deal with all the time in the Service, okay?"

"Alright," Olivia mused, thinking. "I'll continue my hand-to-hand training with Declan. I'd like to carry an Intar, too, as I can use one to keep someone subdued.

"I'm glad to hear that being a conscientious objector isn't going to mess with the team," Olivia said. She was more than relieved. She wasn't going to have to face the hell of taking a life and subjecting someone to what she had been through. "Will the paperwork go through before the next mission? Or did I wait too long?"

Caine grins evilly.

"I'll walk the paperwork through myself. You talk to Doctor Fraiser, or anyone else you know in medical to schedule as soon as possible your psych-eval on this one. I'm sure you will pass and then I'll start pestering the General. I'm sure after dealing with Doctor Jackson and his love of firearms all these years will help him see the light."

"Besides, we can't have a team without you. I'd hate to be sidelined because our next mission is going to be a doozy. I can smell Paradise Planet on this one. I swear, if I see sand somewhere besides a beach, I'll scream ... on the inside," he winks.

"Now, I need to burn a little juice and get through these PT reports for all of us. Then I'm on to your solution. I should see you in less than forty-five. Is there anything else, or are we rolling?"

"I think we're ready to go," Olivia said, smiling. She stood up and offered her hand to her CO. "Thank you again, Major. This means a lot to me." As they shook, she said, "I'll catch up to you later."

The psych-eval was unwelcome news, Olivia considered once she was in the hall. Part of the reason she didn't want to risk killing anyone was because she could remember what it was like to be murdered, again and again. She couldn't bear the thought of doing that to someone else, to end their life in a burst of pain and blood.

Hopefully, it wouldn't be an issue, or that she could bull her way through the eval. Just so long as she could carry a zat and go on missions, she'd be happy.
