Appearance: Liv is almost petite with an average frame. Her dark hair curls wildly and is borderline frizzy, which creates interesting hair days. But she's always been a pretty girl, and she's learned to make her wild tresses work for her. Her clothing tends to be revealing, and some days is just slutty. She loves to look unique and individual, a reaction to her strict childhood.

Personality: Dynamic and outgoing, Liv always manages to be the life of the party. She works hard too (see Interests). She likes to be everyone's friend, but won't tolerate fools or jerks for long. She has a temper which she works to control, but it flares from time to time.

Interests: In addition to attending Boston University's Journalism School full-time, she is an active volunteer in Habitat for Humanity International, the BU Japanese Student Organization, Amnesty International and BU's Women's Resource Center. Many who know her are concerned she does too much, but she hasn't slowed down yet. As a hobby, she sometimes looks into cold cases, though never with any real success.

History: Izumi Haruo had never been to America before. The exchange program that Tokyo University had established with Boston University seemed the best chance he’d ever had to see the superpower first-hand. Despite just learning that she was pregnant, his wife Nashi encouraged him to take the trip. It was only for a month, she reasoned, and the opportunity to teach Japanese history to a different culture was one he shouldn’t pass up. So Haruo went to Boston, to the decadent, rude West.

He was almost immediately in trouble. While his teaching was successful, he was lonely, homesick and lost. Calling Nashi every night helped, but it was hard to work out the best time, and he knew she was always tired from the baby. Plus it was very expensive. So he cut back to four times a week and suffered quietly.

Into this suffering stepped Julie. He didn’t like her at first; she was loud and gregarious, but her beauty made it easy to suffer her presence. She grew on him, drawing him out of his shell. She showed him around Boston; she made him laugh; she helped him with his English; she was the bright part of his trip here. For a month, she was his best friend.

On the last night, she took him out drinking. They hit bar after bar, working on having a good time before they had to part in the morning. Haruo wasn’t a huge drinker, but it took him a while to get to the point where he drunkenly confessed his feelings for her. From that point forward, he didn’t remember the rest of the night.

He woke up in his rented bed, their naked forms twinned together. Horrified at what he had done, he woke her up and recanted his announcement from the night before. Nonplussed and with a knowing smile, she gathered up her clothes and left without argument. Relieved and sick, he returned to his wife and his unborn son, prepared to continue his life.

For the next year, all was well. Haruo managed to forget his indiscretion and focused on his family. His son was born and named Wakiki, and he went days without feeling guilty for what he had done. Then the fateful knock on the door changed everything; Julie had found him, and had a surprise: their daughter, whom she had named Olivia Sachi Jenings-Izumi, just to hammer the point home.

Nashi was furious. Haruo was mortified. Julie was leaving the child there. Haruo argued against it, telling Julie to take her to a foster home in America, but Nashi objected. To her, there was no more fitting punishment for her wandering husband than to have to care for the consequences of his mistake. Julie left with a blown kiss and that knowing smile, and Haruo was left in a new hell.

Nashi refused to do any care for the dark-skinned child or touch her husband. Olivia never merited a kind word from her, and whenever Nashi referred to her, it was as ‘your daughter’ or ‘Haruo’s daughter’. To further complicate matters, Nashi wanted her own daughter, and Haruo dutifully performed his duty to his wife. Seiko was conceived in a marriage bed full of shame and hate.

Olivia grew up in the shadow of her younger sister. Everything Livy did, Seiko did faster and better. Seiko was the pretty one; Seiko was the smart one; Seiko was the good one. This backfired in one major way; Olivia knew her mother hated her and clung all the harder to her father. While Wakiki and Seiko were torn in their devotion to the man who had fathered them, Livy knew that she had only one ally, and she lavished attention on her father. Haruo was as helpless before her charms as he had been before her mother’s, and he fell in love with his daughter.

It was easy for Nashi to turn Seiko against her half-sister. Olivia was a charming and beautiful child, and Seiko less so. With the two years between them, they had less in common. But Wakiki was a different story. Despite his mother teaching him that his half-sister was to be despised, there was only two months between them. Wakiki grew up with her, literally. It was like having a dark twin, and he was no less immune to her charms.

School brought new challenges. Despite having something of a protector in her half-brother, Livy’s exotic appearance and infamous background singled her out for a lot of attention. Wakiki’s own reputation suffered as he sided with her more often than not, and that only increased their loyalty to one another. They slowly became inseparable.

Many of the teachers were hard on her; she was half-gaijin and black. Others were kind to her, either from sympathy or because they found her pretty and charming. Livy rapidly learned to use her charisma and beauty to make friends as much as she could. That got her through elementary school and into junior high, when she encountered a new challenge: boys.

Olivia wasn’t loved by most of the students, but when she developed and the boys began to notice, more attention was paid to her. It wasn’t all good, and she was confused by some of it – and even more confused by how aggressive Wakiki got with some of her new admirers. He became frustrated with her for the first time in their life, snapping at her at times. While he presented a united front with her in front of their family, sometimes when they were alone, he seemed angry with her.

She tolerated this for three years, until they were in high school. It only worsened as they got older; he was still her closest friend and protector, but sometimes, he was angry at her. At the same time, she met an English boy named Martin and they dated for a while. It was her introduction into boys and dating, and she enjoyed it, to a point. When he tried to give her an ultimatum regarding sex, she went to Wakiki for advice on what to do. He blew up at her, demanding that she never talk to him about her stupid relationships again.

Confused and hurt, she confronted him on it when their parents were out and Seiko was at a friend’s house for the night. They argued about it, a confrontation which Wakiki ended when he lost his temper and slapped her on the cheek. Hurt, she stared at him, holding her cheek as the first tears fell. Appalled and shocked out of his anger, he grabbed her and hugged her. Stammering his apology, he kept an arm around her as he gently brushed hair back from her tear-stained face. After a tense moment, eyes locked, he kissed her.

Olivia was shocked, but not upset. On some level, she knew that this was supposed to be wrong, but there was no one in the world that she loved more than her half-brother. As he pulled back and offered another apology, she grabbed him for another kiss. The dam was broken, and Wakiki told her of his shameful feelings as he broke down in tears. He loved her completely; he was tortured by how extreme those feelings were, and what he wanted to do to her because of them. Olivia wasn’t surprised; looking back, it was so obvious. With her love in her eyes, she assured him it was alright, and their hug became more. That night, they broke one of Japan’s few sexual taboos.

They carried on their relationship carefully and discreetly. They agreed to see other people, and to stop if either one of them wanted to get out. Their first major issue as a couple was the subject of colleges: for Olivia, there was only one she wanted – Boston University. That’s where her mother had been, and she wanted to go there. Plus, a lifetime of living as a minority in a culture that demands sameness and conformity had instilled in her a sense of justice and intolerance for the cruelty of humanity. She had been volunteering at various charities through school, and her sense of social justice and writing ability were pointing her toward journalism. Because she’d been born in America, she qualified for scholarships and with her grades, she could play a good chunk of her own way. Nashi was more than willing to let her go, but when her son announced the same, she threw a fit. Wakiki held firm and refused all other options, and his mother finally realized that he loved Olivia more than her. Bitter, enraged and crushed, she let him go and focused on her daughter from that point onward.

Livy and Wakiki went to school together at BU, with Livy going for a Journalism degree and Wakiki deciding to pursue a Religious Studies degree. The first year, they tolerated their physical separation, and grew a bit on their own. Olivia made her own friends, including a gay man named Sherman and a rich girl named Ashley. She didn’t forget her unique bond with her brother, though.

During their first summer, they found an apartment and moved in together, getting jobs and working to support themselves. Under the same roof their relationship resumed much as before. Both know it won’t last forever; it can’t, but they’ll enjoy their love while they can.

Olivia’s life became odder during her junior year. She became aware that she was being followed by strange men. So far, they haven’t offered her any reason to fear them, beyond being there. When she told Wakiki, he told her to call the cops next time, which she did. The stalkers were gone before the cops showed up, every time. Gradually, Wakiki took matters into his own hand and trailed her stalkers back to a Hounfour, a Voodun temple. Confused, the two have been watching the watchers to see what they want.
