Mutants & Masterminds: Future Imperfect - Chapter 4: Silent Lucidity

Joani

Recommended Posts

The air was sterile and saturated with oxygen. Constant beeping sounds were interrupted by a few moans and the shuffling of cloth. In the distant some voices could be heard speaking English but nothing was intelligible.

Sly was having a nightmare. He found himself alone in the Walmart – everyone was gone. He desperately tried to reach someone but there was no response. Then he tried again and felt something that was just beyond his reach. He was drowning and had no means to reach the surface as darkness enveloped him again.

Tom woke up with a startle – did he just hear something? A familiar voice? What happened? His body felt bruised and sore and he felt like dust had covered every single inch of his lungs. He looked around finding himself on a gurney. There were cables attached to him and an IV-Unit stand next to him providing his body with nourishing fluids. His head was spinning and he felt dizzy. Then his mind got torn at like someone pulled his head back. His world went dark again.

--

You all find yourselves in the Walmart again sitting in a circle. Sly is walking up and down nervously as if he was looking for something – then he suddenly stops looking over to you. “I must get out of here!” he yells frantically not really focusing on anyone in particular. For a short moment it seems as if he can’t see any of you. Then he snaps out of it.

“Tom? Anna?... What is going on? Where have you guys been?”, he asked them with a broken voice.

(OOC: You all find yourselves in perfect health and perfect condition sitting in lotus-style in a circle. You are in the Walmart which you raided and declared HQ just before you started your missions. You can do what you want and move freely around. I will ask WP-Rolls of you if necessary till then "go with the flow")

Ronnie opened her eyes; her claws were gone, but she was just happy she'd showed up as herself and not, say, Lena. The second that she thought of her others, she realized that she was alone in her mind. For a moment, she was overwhelmed by that loss; no matter how many times she had wished that she didn't have to share her mind, it was all she'd ever known. She would have been fine had there only been Celeste, because when she'd been formed, Celeste had already been there. She, and to a degree all of them, had been her constant.

Now they weren't there.

Ronnie surged to her feet. "Whoa. Whoa! This is... all fucked up. Where are we?"

Kevin opened his eyes at Ronnie's words. He looked around, taking in his surroundings. The last thing he remembered was being lowered, along with the prisoner compartment, to the ground.

He had no memory of searching the prisoner compartment, looking for Miriam, or returning to the Walmart.

To Ronnie, Kevin replies in a sagely, old-timer voice, "We appear to all be back at our Walmart..." And then he addresses both Ronnie and Sly, "...Though I have no recollection of how we got here."

He then adds, to just Ronnie, "Why, do you have reason to believe we're elsewhere?"

Juno opened her eyes. She wasn't sure what she'd been expecting after the pain of bailing out, and that final crunch at the end. She wasn't even sure she'd survived it. That had been by far the worst punishment she'd endured so far.

Giving herself a look, then a look around, she voiced the obvious question.

"Is this real?"

"Yeah!" Ronnie all but shouted. "It doesn't feel right," she added, feeling lame but knowing that was the best way to frame it in a way that wouldn't involve sharing her secrets. "Can't you feel it?"

Turning, she walked toward an exit. Time to test the bounds of this place and see how far it would go to pretend to be their reality.

"Did we win?" Adrian whispered looking for his sister. When Ronnie shouted, the Kid jumped up fists clenched.

"What did happened? I mean, I remember the ship and the ground coming up at us. Orphan," he looks to Sam, "you were once and truly fucked up. You did it, but you paid the price ... now ... now you look okay and that wasn't the Doc."

He looks around to the whole group,

"Gang, we missed something."

Adrian then walks in the direction of were the ship hung there in the air and were its remains should be lying in ruin.

"If we dropped the ship, it should be right outside this ... window ..."

Annalise wakes up and looks around. "How the hell are we back here?"

She sighs. The last thing I remember was Tom Hicks and I taking care of our robots and waiting for contact from the others."

"We definitely missed something."

She moves over to Tom and Hicks, her partners in the last escapade and does her best to wake them up. Only then did she really notice Sly. "What do you mean where did we go? It's obvious we're in the walmart, I just can't fathom how we ended up here."

"No," Juno says, "I don't think so. I mean, even if I healed, my clothes should be all busted up. Last thing I remember, I was blacking out from a serious case of 'hitting a walli-itis,' and now suddenly I wake up sitting in the Wal-Mart? And we're alone? Uh uh, I'm not buying it."

She glanced at Sly.

"What's with him?"

"Uhhh..Ok. This is definitely NOT normal." Tim said, as his eyes opened to reveal the interior of Wall Mart and the whole crew; sitting like they were some sort of Zen cult. His mind raced to find an explanation how they got there. The last thing he remembered was seeing Juno's mangled body and the aliens beam weapon. Things were definitely FUBAR.

"Hey Juno, are you OK? The last time I saw you, you were smashed up with broken arms and legs."

Juno shrugs, not seeming particularly perturbed at that.

"If that's all it was, I'm probably okay. As long as I didn't actually like, LOSE anything."

She pats her shoulders, then her legs.

"Feel fine here."

"Can we not just enjoy a moment of relaxation and peace for fuck's sake?" Travis' voice rang out, a touch annoyed as he tried to maintain the trance that had been slowly but steadily slipping away since Morgan first started speaking.

Tim stared at Travis as if the man had gone mad. "We wake up in Wall Mart, and NO-ONE seems to remember how we got here. You may call it relaxing, but I call it a serioulsy fucked up situation." Tim got to his feet and began to look around the area for an explanation.

Ronnie shoved the exit open - and nearly fell backwards in her attempt to stop. Beyond the door was a whirling mass of nothing and everything. It was endless chaos, and something in her rebelled in the wrongness of it. "Well," she said reaching to pull the door shut, "we can't go that way." But she never really got to say it, not to her companions; Ronnie vanished form their sight.

And was in a hospital. Groaning, she felt sore and tired. Glancing around, she saw everyone else on their own bed. Hissing with discomfort, she sat up, pulling at the IV in her arm. She couldn't stand those things.

Juno got to her feet.

"Ronnie wandered off that way," she said, giving Travis a glare. "You can go ahead and chill out in the fake WalMart. I'm going to see what she found."

She started to stroll away, pausing to check out random items on the shelves just to see what they were. Would they be real things, or imaginary things?

"Ronnie can take care of herself." Most of the time. Travis shook his head and opened one eye. Looking around everything seemed as he remembered it. He felt OK, nobody was shooting at him, or trying to probe him, or drilling into his body. He nodded, This seems pretty damn good given the past few days. He adjusted his posture and tried to recapture the vision he had had before being so rudely interrupted.

Adrian wandered out front and became captivated by the whirling storm front that lay before him. He could make out objects in the whirling duststorm that reached up to the clouds, but they seemed to lose definition and location when he staired to hard. Seemingly unable to stop himself, the Kid walked up to the blown in storm front. He could hear the whistling of the winds, and the booming rush of the windgusts just outside. Oddly, it was completely still inside.

Adrian kicked a loose bit of paper beneath his feet. He looked down at it then stepped past it. His hand reached out past the glass ... and his resistance. Reality rippled and buckled where he touched it. The roaring grew loader then faded as if it came across some large distance. Adrian drew his hand back and realized it had drops of reality on it. The drops ran down his hand and spread out. He slapped at it, but all that did was cause the 'reality' to splash further over him.

"Guys. Ummm ... GUYS!"

He got off that last cry for help and then he was totally immersed. Adrian passed out, or so it seemed. The 'reality' puddled down to the floor, Adrian seemingly absorbed. The rivets of 'stuff' made their way back to the window and out into the storm as if nothing had changed and no one had been here.

"GUYS!"

Adrian sat up in bad, janking on the IV in his nose. That stung, but the pain made him feel alive. He looked across as Ronnie.

"Ronnie, were are Rebecca and Juno? What happened to everybody?"

"...Guys!" The cry was cut short. Tim whirled to where he had seen Adrian looking, but the young man was gone. People were disappearing. It meant only two things: Either they were in some sort of dreamlike state, or they were systematically being taken without any trace or known means. Occam's Razor told Tim that the simplest explanation was the most likely. This place was not real. It was a figment.

Now to find my way out of this place?

Tom, woke up and took in his surroundings. The Wal-Mart with noneof those they'd left behind, and the condition of the others was obviously wrong, he had seen too much happen to them, and himself for everyone to be wondering around just fine.

I remember waking up on a gurney with IV's and shit in me. That must be the real situation, but how did I come to be in here? No matter, I have to find a way back out.

"Grav, this isn't real. Too much happend to us for this to be real and before I woke up here I briefly remember lying on a gurney somewhere with IV's and stuff in me, but there was also human voices talking in English nearby. We have to find a way out of here. Perhaps just leaving the Wal-Mart will do it? Has anyone else gone?"

As he talks Tom moves over to Grav, then tries to draw her with him as he heads to the nearest exit from the Wal-Mart.

Tom and Grav disappeared the moment they opened the door leaving Juno, Travis, Hicks and Tim behind.

Sly was still walking around obviously not aware of what was happening around him. His eyes didn't focus and seemed to stare at something that was beyond the Walmart's walls.

Hicks stood up stumbling around as if he was blind. "What the F...! Is going on! I can't see!"

Kevin stood up; rather un-stiffly for someone his age. His voice was calm and clear. "Well, if we are in some alternate dimension, whether it be in our minds or specifically created for us by some as of yet unknown power, it seems as if people are able to leave by exiting the building. Where they're leaving to, we have no idea, and no way of determining, so I suggest we all head out at the same time. That way, if there's some timing factor, we should all end up in the same place. I'll escort those who don't currently seem to have all of their faculties." In a slightly louder, but no less clear voice he addressed the Sgt, "Don't worry Sgt, I'll lead you and Mr. Fox out of here. Hopefully once we're out your sight will be restored."

And with that he went to go grab one of the Sgt's hands and one of Sly's, and lead them to one of the doors.

Savannah had sat with Simon, watching the whole escapade, trying to figure out where they were and what was going on. Eventually she shrugged and stood up, and waited for Simon to do the same. If everyone else was leaving, they didn't appear to have much of a choice, and there didn't seem to be anything they could do here. She shared a glance at her twin, and as if they had reached a mutual decision, they both headed towards the door, and followed Kevin and the two men he was leading out.

"Guys! Wa..."

Juno was cut off as they just...vanished. She stood there for a second, agape, then realized how silly she was being. If this wasn't real, then what had she been expecting?

She cupped her hand over her mouth and yelled into the store, "Hey! People are disappearing when they go out the front door! Maybe it's a way out!"

Mouth set in a grim line, she decided to see for herself. She marched over to that door, paused for a second to look at the maelstrom outside, then flung it open.

Travis shut out the blathering of the others, he could feel some memory at the back of his mind. Something, a lost fragment of his past, some scrap of the man he had been, and possibly still was.

Click to reveal.. (memories)
Beep ... beep ... beep ... The steady electronic pulse was the first thing that penetrated the fog. It was followed by pain and pressure. Travis opened his eyes to blurry brightness; whatever was above him was white. He tried to move his head but found that after a tipping point it simply flopped over, he was too weak even to hold his head up. Something beeped at him, he groaned. His throat was dry, his tongue and lips as well, it was like he had come through a desert. He laughed at the idea; his last memory of being trapped underwater seemed completely at odds with the very concept of thirst. The laugh came out weak and turned into a cough that erupted fire in his chest. Why me?

The familiar sound of two boots hitting the floor echoed in the room, and then the white monotone was broken by a blaze of purple. "You awake?" Ronnie's voice sounded tired. "Or are you coughing in your sleep again? It'd be nice if you woke up for once, Trav. I'm getting fuckin' tired of talking to your snores." A beat later, she said, "Hey, your eyes are open! You are awake!"

Something touched his forehead - her hand, surprisingly soft and gentle. "Do you need anything?"

Travis blinked a few times until his vision cleared. Ronnie looked well, healthy and rather un-drowned. Travis figured he was dead, but dismissed it due to the pain. Then he figured they had somehow not died, She's going to be insufferable after this. Her voice was loud to his ears, I don't snore ... didn't your mother tell you not to make fun of sick people? He tried to speak but found it difficult, he managed to whisper, "Water," but it sounded like little more than a dry wind over parched earth. She held a glass with a straw to his lips, he managed to wet his mouth. She looked concerned, she was acting unusually kind and gentle, I must have been at death's door. She took the glass away and he tried to speak again. Unable to hear she leaned in close to him, "I could use a blow job ..."

"Ha! You're going to be fine," Ronnie laughed as she straightened, some of her quiet concern falling away. But there was a slight flush on her cheeks as she hitched half her ass onto the bed and said, "You'll have to wait on the hookers, Travis. I think a blow job would kill you right now. Yeah, yeah... I know - what a way to go. Very funny. I think that the docs would be pissed if you died now after all their hard work."

Her hand hovered over the thick bandage on his chest, careful not to touch, and her good humor faded. "You were in bad shape. Even after we got rescued, the docs weren't sure you'd pull through." She quirked a purple eyebrow. "I kept telling everyone you're a fighter, but they wouldn't listen."

Oh, yeah... absolutely insufferable.

So far... "Couldn't die ..." She looked at him, the question on her face, "Somebody has to keep ... keep you from getting in over your head." He closed his eyes and smiled, Couldn't let go without knowing that you were OK. He was quiet for a time and then he opened his eyes, "How bad? Am I going to be able to recover?"

"Oh, sure," Ronnie said easily. Looking a bit awkward, she took his hand - the one without the IV in the back of it - and held it. "You're a mutant. If you weren't, then your ability to return to your job might be in question. But you'll be good as new. You'll even have an impressive scar that you tell lies about to impress ladies."

"Don't need a scar ... to impress," you, "...ladies." He pulled his hand from hers, "Go get some sleep ... you look like I feel. Need my beauty rest ..." He closed his eyes, sleep overtook him in seconds.

First there was a blinding flash again, then the world fall back into place. The shapes of medical surveillance machines and screens gave the room an eerie inhuman touch. Same machines were attached through cables to all mutants that were in more or less severe state of injury.

Slowly they woke up - one by one after having experienced one of the most disturbing dreams they had - everyone except for Sly, who was still caught in his own dream.

A silent alarm went off as Ronnie ripped of the IV from her arm and removed the breather from her mouth. She had to cough and nausea almost overwhelmed her as her body got cut off from the stabilizing liquid. Timidly she managed to get on her feet stumbling to the gurney where she saw Travis still laying like a dead man.

Next to him was Sly - his EEG was erratic and he was the only one who had cables attached to his head. Something was definitely wrong with him - different wrong to be precise but without a Doctor it was hard to tell in which condition they were.

Ronnie noticed how the others woke up all moaning like the living dead.

Then the door opened and a large bald man entered the room looking much like a Doctor with a clipboard on his hands.

"You shouldn't be doing that, Lady.", he addressed Ronnie in a calm voice slowly raising his arms as if to say he was harmless.

"Urk!" was all Tim managed to blurt as his eyes opened. The placid health of Wall Mart was gone. In its place, sickness and fatigue. As he struggled to get upright in the bed on which he lay, he saw the others. They were in a similar state. A large bald guy in a lab coat was admonishing Ronnie.

I'd rather be back in that Wall Mart Tim thought as he finally pulled himself upright. At least there I felt normal. Tim groaned as he surveyed the surroundings.

Ronnie ignored the doctor, pleased that she was registering voices in her head. Stumbling, she shambled over to Travis' gurney, needing to see and feel his condition for herself. Her fingers found a pulse and relaxed. C'mon, you giant whore, wake up. I need you to be ok, Trav.

Looking at the doctor, she demanded, "Where are we, and what do you want from us?"

"Blegh," Juno blurted as she hazily blinked her crusty eyes and tried to sit up. "Gah."

She looked around, feeling muggy and achey and overly warm. Which was stupid. She'd never been sick a day in her life. What'd happened?

"Hey." The word disintegrated into a cough and Juno waved a hand. Her voice was rough. "Could I get some water over here? With a side of 'what the hell's going on?'"

Adrian pushed himself up as well as his mighty strength could under these circumstance allowed, which was probably a great deal.

"Juno," he called out hoarsely, coughing at the end of her name. "Juno, you are alright. Well, alive anyway. Have you seen Rebecca? Any idea were she is?"

Adrian looked around more and more concerned.

"Can anyone tell me were my sister is?" his voice somewhere between desperate concern, and anger.

The Doctor tried to be as soothing as he possibly could given the circumstances.

"I'm not your enemy. I don't want anything from you except for mending and it appears you all have finally recovered. Well most of you it seems.", he looked past Ronnie to those still laying still on the gurneys.

"Listen, we owe you all a lot. Why don't you take your time to re-adjust and I'll get you something to drink. Water? Anything else?", the large bald man smiled at the mutants.

Inside the Walmart Travis continued to probe at his memory. Everything felt closer here. He was certain he was not in a real place but instead some sort of mental ... something. Whatever it was and wherever he was he could feel the memories seething under the surface. His amnesia was like a membrane, thick an clinging to his mind separating him from his past. This place seemed to exist near a thin spot. Travis wanted to puncture the membrane, to find out what happened to him.

And so he sat on a floor that wasn't real in a store that wasn't there and stretched his mind back into his memory, probing for a place where he could break through.

Kevin woke up feeling worse than... well pretty much worse than he ever had; with the exception of those times when he almost got himself killed helping people.

As he sat up, he checked his own vitals on the readout by his bed, comparing what he saw with what he knew to be his norms (doctors make the worst patients), and then quickly glanced around at everybody else's, noting any irregularities.

He also noted the balding 'doctor', and compared him verses the list of people he knew, and compared his actions, demeanor, appearance, etc. with how doctors 'should' act, seem, appear, etc.

With skilled ease, he removed his own sensors and other equipment, and then moved to help those nearest him before heading over to Travis and Sly. Making sure to not get in Ronnie's way, he gave first Travis and then Sly a brief exam, checking their vitals, charts if he could find them, and readouts. He spent much more time with Sly, trying to figure out why his EEG was so erratic.

The Tanner twins woke up at precisely the same time.

The first thing anyone heard were almost identical groans, the only difference the pitch between their voices. Then Savannah slowly tried to sit up, falling back slightly onto her bed as her head went spinning. Simon, wisely, remained in the prone position, glancing over at his sister briefly to make sure she was alright.

"Savi.. don't try to move.. just.. rest, okay?"

She nodded weakly at him, and closed her eyes. It was a sign of how tired and miserable they were that he had spoken out loud to her, instead of in her mind.

Sly was having a very difficult time determining what was real. This Walmart certainly was not, it had the feeling of a dream, but the people were real, somehow he knew that. Until they started disappearing at least. He continued to ignore them; they weren't his concern right now. Just as things had gone crazy he'd had a vision of the aliens and it was that vision that he really wanted to grasp again. In his current state he felt that if he could just reach that place again he might finally understand what was going on.

He concentrated on focusing his own telepathic powers back on himself to try and search back through his own memories to that instant when everything had gone haywire. Thousands of aliens screaming in frustration, it had been somehow revealing something he wasn't supposed to see, and for just a minute it had been like a door that he hadn't known was there had been thrown open giving him a glimpse at something staggering. He wanted to find that door again.

The Doctor nodded and pushed a button on one of the gurneys signaling a nurse to come.

"You'll get some water but I ask you to stay on your gurneys. You are all suffering from the Virus and we have as yet not found any means to cure it. Please don't put too much strain on yourselves else it could worsen your current state.", the Doctor explained as he came close enough for Ronnie to read his name tag. It read "Dr. Jonathan Spyder, Head of Department. Washington D.C. General Hospital"

In the meantime Kevin assessed the situation. The Doctor wasn't acting in an unusual way and it was difficult to tell if he was trying to be sympathic or if he was like that naturally. Travis and Sly were next on his list since they were the only ones not moving or responding yet. Travis appeared to be unconscious but Sly was definitely in a worse condition. The EEG was erratic and given the short time he could observe it he could only guess what was going on with him. It appeared to be some kind of coma but his higher cerebral functions were off the scale.

Travis was focusing on his memories and relaxed with each breath he took. He knew somewhere deep inside there was a door he had to open and once he found the key to unlock it he would know his past - everything. Just as he slowly approached a state of mental peace he suddenly felt a chilling wind interrupting his meditation. He frowned and opened his eyes - the Walmart was gone...

Sly probed his own mind turning his own power inward trying to access the vision he had. His mind slowly tore down the reality it created to keep him sane and the walmart disintegrated - virtually evaporating into nothingness. At the same time the landscape got replaced with barrens of rolling hills. At the far end was some kind of pyramid like the old aztec built.

Sly's mind teleported them to the top of the pyramid presenting him with a view of what was beyond the structure. Masses of green and olive skinned aliens stood like an army awaiting orders of someone obviously standing on top of the pyramid. Next to him was one of the sleek, longlimbed aliens guarded by two huge robots. Floating infront of the alien was a snake like creature which was watching the masses and then slowly turned to face Sly as if it sensed his presence. It's eyes found his and suddenly it lashed out like a cobra...

Travis got torn out of his meditation with a forceful push a painful mental sting making him wake up. The EEG spiked visibly clearly an anamoly compared to what Kevin could analyse so far.

(ooc: Travis wakes up with a huge headache. You shared that last bit of Sly's vision before the snake-like alien stung him/you. I need a WP roll from Sly at diff+2 please. If you succeed you can wake up out of the coma. If not you'll stay unconscious. Update will follow then depending on the roll)
