Aberrant: Stargate Universe - Playing with Alien toys

After dinner on the 18th:

After spending the last day and a half getting his life here in the SGC in to some semblance of organization and order Cam found that he was bored. He'd just spent several thousand dollars to build a smokin hot computer system but now he didn't have anything to do with it. What he really wanted was to get his hands on some alien tech. He was wandering the halls of the level where the scientists all had their labs hoping someone would be working late. Carter would be best, but anyone with access to something he could mess with would be ok. Unfortunately, it was after dinner and most everyone was gone home or to their quarters. There was one light on so he moved down to the open door and looked in. Specialist Jones sat with Dr. Lee looking over what seemed to be some kind of alien device. He grinned and knocked on the door. When they looked up he spoke, "I hope you don't mind me interrupting, but I was a bit bored and was hoping to learn something about the alien tech. You fellows have a few minutes to spare me?"

Both men looked up and motioned him in looking expectantly at Cam waiting for an explanation. Instead of giving them one he asked< "Uh, what is that? It looks Goa'uld."

Dr. Lee, ever willing to explain in great detail anything he was working on started to launching into what would have surely been a 20 minute explanation was interrupted quickly by Gwyn, "Hey Colonel, we were just checking this out. Olivia found it on our last mission, it's a Goa'uld data terminal but it's suffered some damage over the ten thousand years or so it was sitting there. The Doc and I were trying to see if we could find a way to retrieve the data.

Cam moved closer to get a good look. "So what have you tried already?"

Dr. Lee jumped in eager to show off before one of the military types, "We haven't powered it up yet, we don't want to cause any damage." He gestured to a small cord that was extending up from the surface of his table, it was not a standard 110 power cord but one designed to work with Gou'ald tech. "If you want to join us you are welcome to watch."

Before powering it up Cam asked Gwyn and Dr. Lee a barrage of questions trying to get a better understanding of how the Goa'uld tech worked. Finally, he realized the best way would be to just power the terminal up and interface with it. He didn't want to reveal his computer abilities if he could help it, but there might not be much choice.

"What do you think Gwyn, anyone suggestions, or do we power the critter up?"

Gwyn was happy to have someone elses perspective on the problem, although he was surprised that Cam had such a good understanding of the tech so quickly, but then he simply put it down to the effects of the artifact. ASfter all several of the others had said about how they had new areas of knowledge that they hadn't had before, perhaps Cam had also recieved things.

"Well we've about covered everything else, so yeah, let's switch it on. however, I warn you, that's about all I know about computers once there on. I can write a report or play a game, but I've never had the time to start programmming them. I guess that's going to have to change if I'm going to vbe dealing with alien tech though. Either of you gents recommend a programming language for me to start out on, then I'll hsve to build up to the programming on the DHD I quess."

He turns to Lee for his next answer, "You heard anything about what they've found out in the Pegasus. Perhaps they've got some data we could use."

The power cable was run to the connections where the naquadah powersource would have been had Dr. Lee not removed it. It was long ago drained of power anyway and more likely to blow up than recharge.

Cam waited patiently but was disappointed when the display did not light up. "Hmm. Looks like it's got power and from your diagnostics it seems to be functioning at least at a basic level. It may be that after so long dormant the data is just corrupted."

Dr. Lee was shaking his head, "No, they don't work like our computers, they don't have an operating system and software they are hard wired so to speak. Goa'uld and Ancient tech work off crystals that store the data and act kinda the way the old cartridges did on the Commadore 64. Need the device to do something different, then pull out the right control crystals and replace them with cyrstals that are "programmed" to do what you want it to do." As he said "programmed" he made little quoting gestures with his hands. "In fact many if not most of their technology is only programmed to serve specific functions and can't be changed. So for this data terminal to be not working that means the crystals are damaged maybe intentionally, they shouldn't have deteriorated even after all this time, they are crystal after all. We can try replacing one crystal at a time and see if we can get any data off of it, but that assumes we have compatible crystals. We'll have to request the crystals from Area 51 and that will take some time."

Cam looked thoughtfully at the device then at the two men, "I see. Dr. Lee, would you mind if I took this with be back to my lab and examined it a bit more closely while we wait on those crystals to be sent over? Promise not to break it." He grinned at that last.

Dr. Lee laughed in turn. "I doubt you could do anything to break it further than it's already broken. Be my guest."

Cam unplugged the cable from the terminal and moved it over to his side of the table, but he wasn't ready to leave just yet. "So Doctor, surely if they contain data that gets written and erased they can be reprogrammed even if they are crystals?"

Dr. Lee enjoyed more than nearly anything else feeling important and knowledgeable and this new Colonel was pushing just the right buttons. He started in on a fifteen minute lecture on the inner workings of Gou'ald and Ancient tech. "Since Goa'uld technology is based off of Ancient designs as well as other looted knowledge and hardware they have much in common with each other. As far as writing and erasing data to crystals, that's really not that much different that what we do with magnetic drives now, but it's based on light. Our own scientists and researchers for several years have postulated using light as a computing method. The theory is that light travels much faster than electricity and would actually work more efficiently and cooly." He frowned, "Cooly is perhaps not a real word, but you get my meaning." Keeping down operating temperatures has been one of the big limiting factors to have fast our own PC technology can run. The Goa'uld and Ancients not to mention the Asgard all figured out how to do it. They uses control crystals like this." He picked up a couple of different style crystals from his work bench, "These smallish square ones would be the type that data could be written to, whereas this larger blue cylinder shaped one is completely hard coded. The blue one is from a Goa'uld hyperdrive and ones like this are single function. The upshot of this kind of tech is that it is very stable and very durable. It takes some serious damage to break one. Which is a good thing when you are in deep space and want to be able to get home in less than several thousand years." He smiled at his own attempt at humor and grew serious quickly when the other two men didn't laugh.

"The data terminal will use mostly these smaller crystals since they are intended for broader functions...." The doctor continued in that manner for quite a long time before Cam and Gwyn started looking at their watches. Eventually he smiled a self-conscious smile and cleared his throat. "Yes, well, I'm sure that's enough for one evening, I actually need to get some dinner and turn in anyway." He pulled off his lab coat and hung it on a hook by the door as he locked up.

Cam had the terminal under one arm as he and Gwyn made their way up the hall and headed back toward their quarters. Cam turned to his fellow specialist. "So, care to come play around with this thing and see what we can do? I think I might be able to interface this thing to the computer I've got back in my quarters. It would be nice to see if we can get some data off it. We should invite that Steve Courier fellow as well, he might be able to help. I understand he can link with computers."

Yseult was just coming back from an hour of sparing with Ryan, hoping for a long bath, when she saw Cam and Gwyn, Cam having a Goa'uld Data Terminal under his arm. Curious, she headed their way. her blonde ponytail bouncing behind her.

Both men raised their eyes in appreciation at the youthful-looking blonde, her black shirt and grey pants both tight and a little sweaty from her physical training. Her face was flushed and her eyes bright with exertion as she smiled questioningly at them.

"Bon soir you two. What are you doing with a Goa'uld Data Terminal outside of the labs? It looks damaged by the way." She accented soprano was not in the least accusatory, simply inquisitive.

"Well Yseult, we were just going to see if the rig I set up in my office can help decipher the info on it. It'll be a shame if we couldn't get anything off it. You want to join us? You could also point out anything to help me develop some simulations I'd like to run." Cam's smile was warm with perhaps a trace of an imp at the corners. "You did promise you would help."

Yseult gave a brief longing glance in the direction of her quarters, then turned back to the two men. Anyway she was curious to see this computer that Cam believed would be capable of what the lab computers were not. "Of course I would like to come Cam."

As the two men bracketed the blonde doctor between them, they made their way to Cam's quarters, all three speaking in a technical jargon that would have been gibberish to any layman.

Gwyn happily accepted the offer of continuing the research and as Cam picked up the terminal he put various odds and ends of power adapters, clips, plugs, sockets, solidstate lasers of various frequencies and a spectrum analyser into the various cargo pockets of his BDU's.

"Well, you never know what might come in useful." Was his only comment.

The two had been discussing various approachs to try, and Gwyn had described the situation in which they had found the terminal when they encountered the beautiful Canadian. Nodding his agreement of the help that she could be he linked arms with her as they continued to Cam's quarters.

Once back at his quarters, Cam picked up the phone and dialed Steve's number. "Specialist Courier? I am sorry that we haven't had the chance to meet yet, but I am Specialist Colonel Cameron Mitchell. I know this is short notice but I understand you have a way with computers and I could use your assistance with a Gou'ald data terminal that is not functioning. I thought with your expertise we might be able to access it's data and get it working. Interested?"

As he was on the phone the other two specialists had the chance to look around Cam's living room. It was painted a nice (non-institutional) green and matched well with the very comfortable and very stylish furniture. On one wall was a 50 inch LCD flat pannel TV and in the dining area there was a nice solid hardwood table that looked just perfect for playing some poker.

"For the record, you guys are welcome to stop by at any time. The top of that table there flips over to become a gaming table, and I've got a nice set of poker chips and cards." He took in the looks on their faces and was curious at the astonishment on their faces. "What?"

Gwyn spoke first, "Must be nice to be one of the big brass, my room isn't anywhere near as comfortable as this."

Cam chuckled, "You can do the same to your quarters you know. You aren't forced to settle for the military issue furniture. You can always bring in your own. These are considered the same ruleswise as on-base personal housing, you can do whatever you want to them as long as you put everything back the way it was when you leave."

While they waited for Steve to arrive he showed them the computer room. Along one wall there was a desk with a 24" monitor keyboard and mouse just like one would expect, in the corner there was a tall computer rack that was nearly empty except for one computer and a UPS. In the center of the room stood a sleek leather and steel massage chair facing the side wall which held another 50" LCD TV. There were speakers in all four corners and this looked like one hell of a gaming set up.

Cam flipped a switch on the wall and the LCD TV and computer both turned on at the same time, the tv displaying the boot sequence for Cam's customized Linux installation. He grinned in pride at what he'd done.

Upon entering Cam's quarters, Yseult stopped and looked around, impressed. She smiled appreciatively, surprised that a soldier would have such good taste. I guess I will have to stop underestimating the military, since I am part of it now.

"This is very tasteful Cameron, very nice. May I ask were you went to find these pieces? I have not had a chance to go out to furnish my room yet, and I had very little from my last quarters. I usually just went home whenever I could."

Seeing the computer room, Yseult barely suppressed an undignified squeal. Though she wouldn't admit it anyone, even her husband, she was a bit of a nerd, and greatly enjoyed video games. Dr. Lee didn't even know that the Rogue who kept gacking him in PvP was actually her.

"Merveilleux Cam! I will have to wait some time before I can arrange a set-up like this. What are you running in your PC? May I open it and look?" Her fascinated grin was infectious and Cam felt his pride in new abilities swelling as he nodded in assent. "By all means, take a look Yseult."

Both Cam and Gwyn could hear a definite giggle of joy as she slid back the side panel on the computer case and peered inside. "Wow, this is extraordinary Cam. All the CPUs and graphics cards are linked together, yes? Magnifique! Would you be willing to show me how you managed the device drivers? Would you say the four graphics cards together are comparable or better than a Nvidia Quatro FX 5800? Can it handle medical imaging and scientific visualizations in interactive 4D?"

She looked over her shoulder at Cam and Gwyn, her brow furrowed at the way they were looking at her. "What? Is there something on my face or in my hair?" She brushed her face and ran her fingers through her hair looking for anything offensive.

Cam grinned at the appreciation of his computer. "With the custom drivers that I wrote, it will exceed that video card by quite a bit. These cards offer 4 times the thruput, and while it does make an excellent gaming rig I actually designed it with simulations in mind. The Ancient artifact downloaded a great deal of medical information into my brain. I've got no background in medicine, but now my brain is stuffed full of things I've never even heard of before last week. So I created this rig to try and run some simulations and get at least some of what is in here," he tapped a finger to the side of his head, "out and onto hard media so that others can benefit from it."

"Well you're well ahead of me there Cam. I could handle the hardware intefacing but I'm just not up to speed on the programming side, yet another thing to add to my list of things to work on."

Gwyn smiles as he looks around the room, "I think I'm mainly impressed that you manged to get all this in here so quickly."

"Two things allowed me to do that... First, 6 months of back pay from being in a coma; I didn't hesitate to pay extra for next day shipping and tipping people to rush the orders. Second, I don't sleep." He chuckled at that. "Oh, and other than the briefings and catching up on things I need to know, it's all I've done in the 5 days since I arrived. I figured this was a top priority so that I can use it to do other things that need to be done. I'll tell you about those once Steve arrives so I don't have to repeat myself."

Gwyn looks around the room, "Well, don't get too absorbed in this stuff, we have our first trip through to the Alpha site for those flying lessons you promised us tomorrow. Damien is eager to get his hands on one of those 302's from what I hear."

Steve replied,

"Sure. I'll be right over." *Sound great! A chance to see alien technology 'before' everyone else. Probably not useful but even if true it's practice... and if it is useful then we'll just see... wait, 'Specialist Colonel'? How did that happen?*

Steve knocked, then walked in and was struck by non-standard gear and state of the art electronics. He said, "Whoa... Is that a 50 inch LCD?" *Sniff, do I smell money?*

Steve looked around in respect and looking for the 'new' specialist so he could offer to shake hands, said "Oh, I'm Steve."

Cam shook the man's hand. Damn, another of the super good looking people. His file hadn't done the man justice. It was going to be hard to get a date with Steve and Damien around. He suppressed the chuckle that thought almost caused.

"Good to meet you. I understand that you are able to interface with electronic devices." He made sure both the outer and inner doors were shut, and pressed a button on the arm of the chair. "I figured you might want the chance to play with this data terminal SG21 brought back. I think some of the data crystals might be corrupted, but won't know for sure till we check it out."

He moved over to his desk and pulled out some cables from his computer and began hooking them up to the terminal. The ends of the cables looked to be handmade. After all no Radio Shack was going to sell Goa'uld data adapters. Cam looked up from what he was doing to the other three Specialists in the room.

"I would like to share a secret with you three. I haven't told anyone about one of my abilities. I can interface with computers the same way Steve can." Seeing the expressions on their faces he continued, "There is a reason for that. This conversation cannot be eavesdropped on. I've set up my computer rig to emit white noise that should interfere with any electronic listening devices outside of my rooms and I've scanned to make sure there aren't any inside them." The three nova's looked wary.

"The IOA is looking to use us, the Specialists. The reason the doctors were able to revive me is that I was given a gene therapy to add the ATA gene to my system, then they zapped me with the Ascension machine. I was a case study to see if it could be done. With that hurdle out of the way there is nothing to stop them from creating an army of Specialists. I think that's what they intend to do." Despite the gravity of the information he was passing on he chuckled. "They don't know it yet but I've foiled their plans. I sabotaged the Ancient device so that it won't work, at least for now." He became much more serious again, "I've made special arrangements in case anything should happen to me so that the artifact can be turned back on again, but let's hope that doesn't happen."

He looked at the three intently, "So here's why I'm revealing this to you. I would like your help to investigate the IOA and learn everything we can about them in the event that we need to make a move. They have greater security surrounding them than anyone else in the world including the President of the US or the SGC. Getting to them without being detected is paramount if we are to be able to learn of their plans." He paused for a moment then finished, "I know you all do not know me and if you feel that you can't trust me you can always take what you've just learned to General O'Niell or to the IOA and I'm sure I will find myself imprisoned or executed. I won't try to stop you if that's what you feel you must do."

Cam smiled, "Ever read comics? X-men in particular? Some people should not be handed that kind of power. With the IOA I'm sure there would be less 'evil' involved than there was with the NID. I doubt the IOA would kidnap people or force people against their will, but from what I've heard of them and learned just through regular channels I don't want them in control of such an army. Right now there are only a hand full of us Specialist, but what happens when there are 100 or 1000, or 10000. Just think of the things we can do already, now out of 100 or 10000, how many might turn out to be unstable or criminally minded?"

Yseult barely refrained from gaping in open astonishment as Steve Courier entered Cams's quarter. Mon Dieu! The Ascension Device must have been designed by men!

Listening to what Cam had said, Yseult was of two minds. The ATA gene therapy, combined with the Ascension device could do wonders for the health of the populace and its ability to resist the enemies that it didn't even know it had. It could also result in tremendous breakthroughs in the medical, science, and engineering fields, and that was only at first. The total ramifications were unfathomable.

On the other hand, the IOA would retrict this technology only to their favoured few. They only had their own best interests at heart, not the world's. If the technology was accessible to the entire world, that would at least make things even, if no less dangerous. The power each specialist had evidenced so far was staggering, even not taking into account any hidden abilities they may have had. And their powers were still growing from the medical files that Yseult had seen.

Yseult closed her eyes, trying to avoid thinking about a world where everyone could fly unaided, no longer needed to eat or drink or sleep. Would we even be human anymore?

Yseult inhaled deeply, her black shirt stretching tight, then faced Cam directly, inhuman turquoise eyes serious.

"The IOA would not need to kidnap or force anyone. The powers the device can give would be reward enough. And they would inevitably choose those who would be unsuitable or unable to handle the powers they were grantded."

A haunted quality entered Yseult's gaze as she continued. "I too have no reason to trust the IOA. They are the ones who forced me to 'die' and I believe they are still monitoring my family. I will help you in any way I can to investigate the IOA Cameron, but I will not put my family at risk. So my involvement will have to be either hidden or my family taken out of their reach."

Nodding in agreement with Yseult he added, "I don't intend for them to ever know that we investigated them. I don't wish to upset the balance of power or even to remove them from their positions of authority. I just want to know what they have planned for us and to be able to counter anything particularly stupid or dangerous that they might do. They might not be planning to create an army of super soldiers. It may be that one or more of the council just want an advantage over their fellows. Imagine what a politician could do with Steve's looks and charm."

Steve took in the other 'new' specialist. *Now how did I miss her on walking in? Oh yeah, the smell of money and then the artifact.*

Steve said with a slight gleam in his eye, "Now how did I miss you? I'm Steve and very glad to meet you. But what do you mean by saying 'die'? You don't look dead to me."

Gwyn listened carefully to what Cam had to say, and Yseult's responce before answering himself, "The IOA not as bad as the NID? Well, perhaps not, but they have already tried to get Olivia to spy on us here for them, and we believe they may be about to try some form of psychological or emotional blackmail to try to force her to do so. Doesn't really sound like anyone I particularly want to work for directly now does it?. I think it's safe to say that you can count SG-21 in."

A frown appeared on Cam's face at the new information. "I wasn't aware of that. So far I've been going on gut instinct and the knowledge that an army of super soldiers could be a bad plan in the hands of politicians. When we investigate them we'll have to make sure to look into that."

Looking at the data terminal he looked up and grinned, "For now lets start by learning to work together and discovering what our strengths and weaknesses are. If we can get any data off this thing then I think we might be able to do something less complex like hijacking the base internet connection in order to have an outside link. We'll need that as the first step of investigating them."

The team got down to business, Gwyn providing knowledge to get the thing hooked up to Cam's system properly since he'd been working with Dr. Lee.

Gwyn happily helped out with the various connectors that he had brought with him from Lee's lab. Once that was done he was largely left looking over the shoulders of the others as they tried to bring up the device and the results that came up on Cam's big screen. However, from what appeared, what they said, and what Dr. Lee had already told him about Goa'uld computer systems he tried to work out what the commonest fail points might be in the system for the others to try fix.

*Body transference and super creation. Odds are good that he turned off the super creator with Cyber-K, which is to say, the same way I would. And it could be done on anyone.*

*Well, he made the right move in turning it off. Being a specialist is a huge advantage, I don't need more running around. But in theory with both those gadgets I could rule the world, basically forever.*

*Sure, make a hundred loyal specialists, none of whom would dream of using their god like power to take over themselves. None of whom would be crazy like 'Red'. None of whom would have more power than me.*

*OK, bad idea, but interesting that I'm smart enough now to see it. Pre-special Steve would have run with that and gotten killed. OK, but body switching, THAT could make me immortal.*

*And powerless. The new body wouldn't be a specialist, with minimal training the current body could last thousands of years, and with luck become a god. No point in swapping down, and if the transference tech gets out, you're going to be the target.*

Steve said, "This body transference artifact, can I hope it was destroyed?"

Yseult found it distressingly easy to talk to the remarkably attractive man. Sigh, another one.

"Alas, no, the device is once again secured in Area 51," Yseult answered with a smile. "Not that it do anything to us. Ma'chello's device will not work on those with 'specialist' physiologies."

Cam listened with interest to the discussion of the mind switching device. He was much relieved that it didn't work on Specialists. "I think I need to request info on all of the alien tech that has been brought back. I don't like the thought that there might be other things out there that could be sprung on us."

After nearly two hours of work the four specialists did manage to power up the device and get it working. The data terminal had once belonged to Ra himself and so was not abandoned lightly. After poking around at it for a while it was pretty obvious that the data was intentionally wiped. Even so Cam wasn't willing to give up that easily.

"I don't know anything about this alien tech, but with Earth tech it is really difficult to completely wipe data and it can be retrieved sometimes even after being deliberately over written several times. Besides, I don't think they foresaw Steve and I and the ability we have. Steve you up for trying to work together to access the data, our way? Not sure how it might be possible for us to combine our gifts, but maybe if we try to access at the same time we can get past what's been done to it?"

Steve seemed willing to try so Cam reached into the machine with his thoughts and attempted to take control of it and force it to show the missing data, at the same time he could feel Steve doing the same.

*I could power max. Cam didn't go to Omar's lecture, the suggestion would have to come from me.*

*Right. Because clearly the clock is ticking and our lives are on the line. If we don't figure this out, why, we could miss dinner. And that's well worth the risk of a powermax.*

"So let's keep at it. It's not going anywhere and we have the time. This isn't the time or the place for short cuts like throwing a powermax." *No Short cuts? Wow I have changed.*

"A 'Powermax'," Yseult said, frowning at the absurd term, "is a way to increase the potency of your abilities. You focus on the potential energy required to use the ability, without actually doing anyting with it. As the power builds, you then activate the power you want to use, and it will have an greater effect."

Yseult looked at each man there, trying to impart the serious of the risks. "There are some risks in doing this however. The human body wasn't meant for these powers, and even our evolved physiologies can be strained by using your abilities this way. This, I have learned second hand by reports that I got from Janet, Dr. Frasier."

Cam shrugged. "I don't know if this is something worth risking health problems over, but I definitely think it is worth trying again and seeing what we can find." He grinned, "One of the benefits of not needing to sleep is that I can keep plugging away at it till I figure it out, that is if you guys don't want to at it."

He put the terminal aside and unhooked it from the main system. "For now, I think there is something something more important. We need to bypass base security and get external access to the internet. I want to set up a secure tunnel to the outside so that we can research the IOA and keep an idea on their manipulations. Steve, I think we might benefit from working together on this and unlike the goa'uld PC here, I think it is work the 'powermax' thing. I'd really not want to be caught doing it after all. What do you say?"

The two men merged their efforts seamlessly as they took very subtle control of the SGC's network routing. They made small changes not actually altering the network itself but only ensuring that one relatively small pipe was free from monitoring of any kind. It the task itself wasn't difficult, but performing it without any detection that was the tricky part. With the two men quite literally probing the system with their minds alone in ways that no Earth computer could possibly detect they were incredibly successful. With their primary goal accomplished it was but a thought to transfer their combined efforts to unlocking the alien device. Even without it connected to Cam's system anymore it seemed such a small gap that they 'stepped' over to the smaller but far more complex system.

"Nah, not bigger, just a lot more complex. It is pretty massive though. I don't think it is at anywhere near it's capacity. I'm pretty sure most of this thing has been erased." The two men continued to work with the device for nearly an hour forcing it to report and bypassing many blocks and systems corruptions. Then as they cleared one last block the devices' screen lit up and began to display. From there it was only a matter of making it believe that it had not actually been issued an erase and corrupt command. That was harder than it sounded being unfamiliar with the alien tech, but after several hours of work they managed it. Of course once the screen was active they also had the assistance of Gwyn and Yseult in helping to bypass it's systems, or at least to give advice.

((If you speak/write Goa'uld, you can make an int+comp roll to assist and I'll add to what is revealed if you do.))

Much of what was revealed would take time for the guys in Intel to go over and study, but one thing was instantly recognizable to everyone present. One entire 'folder' of data was a list of all gate addresses that Ra had in his possession at the time the datapad was abandoned.

"Nice!" That one word conveyed a great deal of satisfaction in the work they'd done and the result it had. Cam moved over and took a seat in his reclining chair and relaxed for a minute before looking to the others, "Hopefully some of these will be unique."

Yseult studied the information scrolling across the monitor of the goa'uld terminal, her turquoise eyes growing wider by the minute as her lips turned into a deepening frown.

"I can read this," Yseult whispered. "All of this, I can read, as easily as French and English." Her voice was firmer as her slender fingers glided across the screen, translating the words as easily as Daniel Jackson could have.

Yseult's eyes were bright with a burning intelligence, the over-sized, turquoise irises almost glowing.

Steve said, "Gate addresses. Now that's important. You know... the only reason he'd have a list of gates is if he's doing something with it. Other info on this thing probably has some kind of comments about those addresses."

"Maybe just weather reports or census figures..." *But even that would be useful. Wait! Did I just make more work for myself?*
