Aberrant: Stargate Universe - Orb of Attraction [Complete]

Gwyn listens to reality destroy his plan, then replies to Cam and Damien, "Well I guess I better get that flight suit and airtank we used for that flight test Major. Colonel, the air tank is so I can continue to use the radio rather than for life support."

He pauses to consider what else he might need and continues, "I should be able to reach the edge of space in about 20 minutes, after that I'm open to suggestions as it would probably take me too long to get anywhere useful."

Cam thought for a second then said, "Don't worry Gwyn, they'll scramble one of the 302s that are on standby, it can have you beyond just the edge of space in just a few minutes, that is if you meet it in the air."

Damien picks up the phone,

"Hello, get me General O'Neil. It is an emergancey. Thank you."

"General, Major Caine here. We have a consistant judgment on the situation concerning Doctor Jenings-Izumi."

Pause.

"Yes sir, we have a plan. We are going to put the Doctor into cardiac arrest in order to break the parasitic link between her and the device."

"No sir, but it is of the concensus of the team here that it won't detonate. Our plan is to take the object into high orbit and launch it into space. It will either be done by a pilot on a 302 or Specialist Jones working unassisted."

"Yes sir, he is capable."

"Yes sir. We will let you know before we do the procedure."

Caine hangs up the phone.

"Team, we have a go. Prep Olivia."

Steve asked quietly, "Can you break Earth gravity? I mean, really break it? Usually things that we put up there come falling back. 20 minutes to space means it'd take you, what, months to get to the moon?"

Yseult tuned out the others, the only thing that mattered was Olivia, her patient. The bomb was just a detail that would be taken care of.

"Dr. Frasier, would you prep Olivia for the procedure? I will prepare the adenosine. I will assist from the monitor room." Yseult was calm, ignoring the shocked exclamations at her idea. She went to the drug closet and prepped the drug, her hands steady. She delivered the drug to Dr. Frasier with a burst of precise, telekinetic might, the syringe settling in the doctor's hand, next to Olivia.

Sitting back down at the displays to monitor Olivia's vitals, Yseult activated the intercom, to described the effects of the drug to those in the observation room.

"The adenosine will act immediately, causing the heart to stop beating for approximately one minute, then resume. Within five minutes, Olivia's EEG readings should return to their normal vslues. Her other symptoms will just take some care and time to recover from."

"Whoa, hang on Yseult. Unless we've got everything ready to get the bomb out of here as soon as you do that it might be able to reforge a link to her. You need to wait until we hear they've got the 302 in place. In the mean time I'll go get my kit and get ready." So saying he heads for the door.

He pauses on the way out, "Steve, I don't know for sure but I feel confident I could reach space unaided. With using the 302 I guess I'll have to wait for another day to test it out."

With that he activates his 'afterburner' as he runs from the room to get the kit.

Another hour passed while the 302 got into place and Gwyn prepared himself. Another thing that was done was to have the emergency exit shaft opened at the top and guarded so that Gwyn would be able to bypass the long elevator rides to the surface. It would be a tight fit in the space suit, but being careful and taking it slow would insure a safe trip up. The other thing in everyone's favor was that it was 3:00 am and unlikely that the 302 would be seen. Air traffic had been temporarily rerouted to avoid any commercial flights from interfering with the operation.

Cam really wished he could be the 302 pilot, but understood that this was where he belonged doing what only he and Steve could do.

The medical part of the procedure began and everyone held their breaths.

((I need rolls from everyone involved. Cam and Steve please make CyberK rolls, Yseult Int + Medicine, Gwyn dex + flight.))

Gwyn insures that the corridors between the Isolation room and the lift are kept clear with the lift shaft clear through to the surface. Once he has his suit on and acknowledgement that the 302 is at the rendezvous he gives Yseult the go ahead, standing ready to bag up the device as soon as Steve and Cam let him know the link has been severed.

Once he has the nod he will quickly close up the bag, including transponder, that the device is now sitting in, and activating his 'afterburner', dashes for the lift. In the lift he activates his flight and launches up the shaft to rendezvous with the 302 in air.

The plan was coming together. The risks had never been higher on a striclty personal level. Now all he had to do was will the mission to succeed. Instinctively, he added his own signature to the others. It was the best he could do.

Synergy

(14:41:29) (Damien): Spending Willpower

(14:41:44) (Damien): First one is a mega

(14:41:54) ChatBot: (Damien) rolls 6d10 and gets 8,6,10,6,8,7.

That is SIX dice to add to the rolls as needed. Caine would prefer three went to Yseult for her Medicine roll and three went to the roll to dispose of the device.

Yseult and Dr. Frasier prepared Olivia for her temporary lack of life signs, Adrian coordinating them with Gwyn and the readings from the device. Yseult's face was composed, her will focused, as she used her telekinetic ability to help Dr. Frasier.

Steve hesitated. The docs were getting Olivia 'ready' if that's the right word for making someone into a corpse. He felt very fortunate that he didn't have the training to help. Gwyn was going to fly it away (good for him). Hiding from a nuke was pointless, only the other side of the wormhole would work and that wasn't an option. That meant the only thing he could do was monitor the device.

Everything seemed to come together in a symphony of motion and intention. Caine was like a director giving people their queues. Steve and Cam both fell into intense focus on the device monitoring to see anything would go wrong and hopefully act if that were even possible. Gwyn held the device in his hands ready to bolt when given the word. Yseult and Dr. Fraiser initiated the procedure that brought Olivia's heart to a stop. In a matter of seconds she was flat-lined.

Their minds inside the device both men knew with certainty that the link had been severed by the death of their fellow specialist, but also knew with a sinking feeling that a countdown had been activated. Only minutes remained before the device would detonate. At the same instant both men shouted, "GO!!!"

Gwyn didn't hesitate but sprang into the air flying at great speed down the corridor and up into the emergency escape shaft. Over the radio Cam informed him, "When the link severed it started a countdown. You've got 9 minutes 53 seconds."

As soon as he was out of the hatch at the surface Gwyn put on the afterburners and made max speed up to the waiting 302. It took a precious minute to match speeds with 302 and get into position and latch his safety harness in place. Then the 302 was powering toward the upper atmosphere and space.

In the SGC the specialists and General O'Neill tracked the 302s progress on the screen of the Goa'uld data terminal while Yseult and Dr. Fraiser monitored Olivia and began the process of reviving her.

By the 5 minute mark the 302 with Gwyn attached had made it out of the atmosphere and into the 'safe zone'. O'Neill gave the order to launch it toward the sun and get clear.

As Olivia's heart began to beat again the device detonated. It was a powerful blast and even with the distance they had made the 302 was tossed sideways like a toy sustaining some damage, but it was engineered to be tough and was able to right itself and limp back toward base.

((Gwyn take 5 levels of Bashing damage.))

Now that's what I'm talking about Caine thought as the group moved like a well-oiled machine. He liked to think he had something to do with it, really, but he felt that was just an illusion. Everyone had risen to their level of competancy, that was all.

Now all he had to do is stand around powerlessly as Olivia's hear and soul struggled to get better. Was that too much to ask.

Olivia didn’t remember how she got from the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park to her apartment near Groom Lake and Area 51. She sat up in her bed slowly, feeling a deep sense of dread. She was waiting for something, to hear something. She waited in breathless anticipation, dredging her mind for the source of the terror-

Restore.

The word wasn’t actually said, and that was the only reason Olivia didn’t suffer a heart attack.

That’s when she realized her heart wasn’t beating. “Creepy,” she muttered, completely unnerved by that fact. She didn’t remember that from before.

“What before?” she muttered, sliding out of bed and standing. She felt tied and a little weak, as if she hadn’t eaten recently. Shaking off that sensation, she headed for her living room.

Another shock awaited her. On the floor a young boy sat playing a video game. At her gasp, he spun around, then dropped his game paddle. “Hi!” he chirped and ran to her, throwing his arms around her.

“Oh god,” she whispered, seeing herself in his eyes and curving lips, and Vinny in his build and nose. “Baby.”

He pulled back and looked up at her. “You would have named me Dominic,” he informed her.

Her knees gave out and she dropped to the floor. Dominic was smiling at her, meeting her shocked, tearful eyes with his sparkling, cheerful ones. “How?” she whispered.

“I’m not really your son,” he said. “I’m just your mind’s representation of the part of you that you let die at Hatchin’s hands.”

Olivia stared at him, aghast. “What?” she asked dumbly, unable to process all of this right now.

“Mommy, I’m here to tell you something important,” he said, pushing her hair back from her face with precious little hands.

“You should hate me,” Olivia whispered as she started to cry. “I k-k-k-killed you.”

He gently wiped away her tears, and when he spoke, it was the voice that she’d ignored for years. “’To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.’ Lewis B. Smedes,” Dominic said. “Whether or not Dominic would forgive isn’t the issue. I am not Dominic. I am using the form that you see for him to tell you to forgive yourself.”

“I can’t,” Olivia sobbed, racked with agony. “What I did was too awful. I can’t do it.”

“Yes, you can. ‘The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.’”

“Mahatma Gandhi,” Olivia whispered. Growing up, it had been a favorite quote of hers.

Dominic nodded. “You have to forgive yourself, Mommy. ‘There is no love without forgiveness, and there is no forgiveness without love.’ You have to forgive yourself so that you can love yourself, so that Daddy can love you too.”

Olivia broke down in tears. She wanted to argue, but part of her just wanted to hold her son, even if he wasn’t really her son. She grabbed him and pulled him into her lap, clinging to him. “I’m sorry,” she whispered to the child he wasn’t.

“I know, Mommy. I know,” he told her, putting his arms around her neck and kissing her on the cheek. “What you did wasn’t good, but it’s not unforgivable. You are a good person, Mommy. Be that person. Forgive.”

“I’ll try,” Olivia sobbed, cradling her son.

“You have to do it, or you’ll lose everyone – Uncle Wakiki, Aunt Ari and even Daddy.” Dominic was somber as he talked. “Be good, and be happy, Mo-”

She was jerked, but not in any perceivable direction. For a long moment, there was a tug of war, and she waited for that dreaded word. Hovering between life and death, for a moment, Olivia remembered everything that the pentagon put her through. She waited, but the terrible word never came; instead, she was pulled again.

Her eyes opened and she looked up at the ceiling of the SGC medbay. Dr. Fraiser bent over her. “Don’t try to talk,” she said, “you have a feeding tube. I’m going to take it out soon, but until then I need you to relax.” She smiled. “Welcome back, Olivia.”
