Aberrant: Stargate Universe - [Mission SG22]: P3X-559 second visit

The newly formed SG22 made their way into the briefing room wondering what new and interesting world they would be exploring today. Some team members might have wondered if they were in for an unpleasant mission with Captain Wright as their team lead. Rumors on the base were divided as to whether Vinny was a golden child that could get away with anything or was being punished in the worse possible way General O'Neill could concieve of given the Captain's nature and reputation. One thing that no one doubted was that the Captain was a solid soldier who could handle himself in a tough situation, and that fueled speculation that this team of 'specialists' were in for a diffucult time.

The team filed in one at a time taking their places around the table. After everyone had arrived O'Neill walked out of his office and took his own seat. "Good morning. Your mission will be to return to P3X-559 and continue where SG24 left off. We questioned the Jaffa prisoners and determined that Ba'al is up to something there and we need to find out what. All they knew or that we could get them to reveal is that Ba'al wants the planet as a buffer between himself and Annubis who is moving towards Ba'al's core systems. Head back to the planet and find out what you can."

Fuckin' hate that snake. Fuckin' hate Anubis more, the psycho toxic fart.

"Sir, sounds great. What's our time frame and how long til check-in?"

Vinny was excited, and it showed, his eyes glowed with the threat of violence. That he was going to be calling the shots only added to the high. No more would he have to deal with stupid orders and asinine suggestions.

The general said, "I want check in when you make it to the town and do a perimeter check, or in 3 hours which ever comes first. Since we are fairly sure there could be hostiles we'll be sending in a team of marines to hold position at the gate and watch for any gate activity as well as to back you up should you need it. We've done three fly overs since your return and still haven't seen any open sign of Goa'uld activity so whatever they are doing they are doing quietly. Beyond the first check in I want regular check in's at 3 hour intervals. And Captain, remember the people haven't proven hostile, they may not even know the Goa'uld are on their planet. From what the Jaffa prisoners said that is almost certainly the case."

"Understood, sir." Vinny responded, "Aside from investigating the snakes, should we roll with first contact parameters with the friendlies?"

Vinny glanced at Kyria as he continued, "Would be a good idea to get friendly with the natives if Ba'al is planning on extended actions on the planet.

"Yes, first contact. Assess the situation and make a judgment call once you have swept the perimeter. If we can poison them against Ba'al through friendliness and trade all the better. If they follow Ba'al side with him we will withdraw, although you can make the case that they will only suffer under his rule."

Steve's expression didn't change. *Oh I didn't need to hear that.*

*Hmm... now first contact I'd probably be good at. It's not all that different from my normal work.*

Kyria nodded to Vinny and glanced over at Steve, smiling. "The two of us can probably handle that, though we should read over a cultural assessment before we go, then. No need to ruin everything on a simple misunderstanding or cultural taboo."

Excited for a more talk and less firefight mission she asked, "When do we leave?"

Aradia sat quiet, trying to absorb it all. The military lingo, especially the stuff related to the Stargate program, was still a bit over her head, and she had to focus in order to absorb what they were saying about snakes and Jaffa and Goa'uld. She had a feeling that in the midst of trying to make sure her powers were under control, the scientists had overlooked or skipped past a little more of the important stuff than they probably should have.

Yeah, like what the fuck everybody's talkin' about...

Aradia didn't like not knowing what she was doing, and it showed. She scowled as she listened, but didn't say much.

While Vinny waited for the General's answer, he looked at his team, gauging their emotional reaction to their first mission. Noting Kyria's excitment, he smiled, but when he looked to Ara, the smile quickly turned to his normal scowl.

Need to have a fuckin' chat with Gumby.

Aradia took a breath, and once they were dismissed, she stood up and walked out of the room. She was doing her best to hide her irritation, but her best wasn't that great. Aradia had never been one to have to hold back her emotions before. She turned down the hall towards the women's dorms, so that she could go pack.

As they filed out, Vinny said, "Wanna see everyone in the gate room in an hour...Guh-...McConnell, hold up, need a word."

He waited until they had the hall relatively to themselves before asking, "What crawled up your ass? You got a problem with the mission?" It came out relatively neutral, but his facade implied a more meaningful expression, if unintentionally.

Aradia stopped outside, waiting till everyone had filed out and past the hall, shooting her curious glances as they left. They'd leave to her Vinny though, and sure enough he was the last one out. He waited until the hall was fairly clear before asking his question, and she hesitated for a moment - common sense warring with pissed off - until finally pissed off won out, as usual.

"Yeah.. I got a problem. You guys got a book on this shit or somethin'? Cause I'll tell ya, they did plenty of work making sure I knew the difference between turning into a goldfish or a guniea pig, and that's all great and fine. But it ain't gonna do us a hell of a lot of good if I shake some alien mother-fucker's dick instead of his hand cause I can't tell the damned difference, now is it?"

She sighed and ran a hand through her hair.

Vinny exploded in laughter at the audacity of her worry, nearly blowing snot out his nose at the unexpected reasoning.

"McConnell, you're fuckin' alright." he said clapping a hand on her shoulder as he turned to walk away.

"Shakin' dicks...fuckin' priceless." he giggled to himself as he turned the corner.

She watched him go, then sighed slightly in annoyance. She was somewhat less irritated than she had been - after all, Livy had said he'd be a good CO, even if he was a piece of shit. So if he wasn't gonna worry about it, she was going to try not to anyway.. at least for now.

"We've taught you what you need to know, Specialist.. you've got the basics. The rest you should be able to pick up from your team, and from your missions."

"Your confidence in me is flattering, Captain Carter, but this is totally out of my league. I'm gonna fu- I'm gonna screw something up here. I know it."

"Don't worry so much. Between your regular abilities and your new ones, you're going to be an incredible asset to your team. Any mistakes you make are just part of the learning process. If there was more time.. we'd do more. But your team is short one, and keeping you in here is keeping them off missions. You'll do fine, Specialist McConnell. Good luck.. and welcome to the Stargate Program."

She sighed, and hurried back to her room to get ready.

An hour later the team was assembled in the gate room fully decked out in BDU's and armed appropriately. General O'Neill was standing in the control room looking down through the glass as always. Like General Hammond before him he made a tradition of always being present when a team left if at all possible. His voice came through the speakers, "Good luck out there and don't take any foolish chances."

Captain Oren's marine squad waited patiently for the gate to open, but within two seconds of the wormhole coalescing his people were rushing through to establish a beachhead in the event of hostile Jaffa. After the all clear signal came through SG22 moved through as well.

On the other side thing had not changed from their last visit. Captain Oren looked over to Vinny, "Sir, doesn't look like the ground around the gate has been disturbed in the last few days. Looks like there was rain about a week ago that obscured any old tracks, but there aren't any new ones." The forest surrounding the stargate's clearing seemed peaceful.

Steve let his Shadow fade the moment they stepped out the gate. They might have been expected and while he wasn't sure if it'd prevent some sniper with great range optics it couldn't hurt.

After hearing about the lack of tracks he asks, "Would we know if there was a second star gate around?"

"It is highly unfuckin' likely. There is a pretty concrete rule of one planet, one gate." Vinny said in answer to Fabio.

"We know the approximate location of the town, let's keep a klick out and play Marco Snake-o before we head in, wouldn't do our ass' any good to get reamed by some unexpected incubators. Fan out and keep yer eyes open."

Aradia looked around nervously, trying to get a feel for the area, and what they were surrounded by. She stared up at the Stargate for a minute, then shook her head, and focused on the rest of her team, and everything that was going on around her.

Now isn't that some shit..? You're on an alien planet, girl. Soak it up.. most people don't get this kinda chance.

"Let's move." Vinny nodded at Kyria in answer. "Stay within 20-30 feet as we move. Eyes peeled like expensive grapes, Ba'al's a nasty mother-fucker. Once we make a fuckin' circuit we'll head into town and make nice with the natives."

Vinny started walking as they pulled away from each other down the path through the woods.

Aradia followed her other teammates lead for the moment, falling in a bit behind and to the left of Vinny. She glanced around them a bit nervously as they moved, trying to stay aware. She was used to working as a team, it's not like she couldn't do it. In time she hoped to be able to trust this team with her life, the way she had her fellow acrobats back home. After all, when someone's flinging you through the air at a hundred feet up, you have to trust them. But she didn't know these people very well yet, and what they were good at or not. And that made her cautious.

"I'd offer to turn into something else - I dunno, something fast or something that flies, and scout ahead for us, Sir. But I don't know the wildlife on this planet.. I might accidentally draw more attention. I suppose it could be small. What do you think, Captain?"

She bit her lip. In reality, she had no idea what good being able to turn into something else could do actual do for her team, except maybe to spy on someone. It was one of the few things she could think of that might help them out.

Adjusting to the role of lead was one thing, having to command a team of people with strange-ass abilities was something that would take time getting used to.

Shit, shoulda fuckin' thought of that.

Vinny stopped on the path and turned around to Aradia. "That's fuckin' brilliant McConnell, you are hereby dubbed 'Scout.'" He said making a 'cross' motion in her direction.

"Birds are more or less consistent on most of the worlds, so something small and fast would be the shit." He paused for a second in thought. "Fuckin' hummingbird would prolly be best. Think you can handle that?"

"I've done birds but never anything that small. I can sure give it a try, though. If I can do it, nobody'll notice if the colors are fucked up or somethin' anyway."

Aradia bit her lip, and took a breath. She squeezed her eyes shut, and then shifted. Her size shrunk tremendously, until she had assumed the form of a small bird perched on the ground. A careful look showed that the coloring wasn't quite hummingbird-like, in fact it looked an awful lot like a brown and peach hummingbird with blondish-white tipped wings, but it was so small it was unlikely to draw any attention. She hopped a couple times, as if testing, and then flittered up into the sky, wings beating in a fast, blurring motion. It flittered around for a second almost proudly, and then darted off ahead of them, through trees at first, and then high enough above to get an ariel view of what was going on all around and ahead of them.

Click to reveal..
(13:37:03) ChatBot: (Aradia) rolls 6d10 and gets 1,7,8,4,6,9 = 3 suxx/1 for shifting, 1 for flight, 1 for size. -3 Quantum = 25 QP

Aradia flickered high over the treetops, darting in and out a little so she didn't draw attention - not that she figured a freakin' hummingbird would draw much anyway.

*Naw, I'm cool - I didn't change my perception any, just my appearance. You can tell him I'm good. I learned my lesson.*

Kyria got a little flash of a memory involving the goldfish incident that immediately brought a surge of embarassment to the other Nova's mind as she realized Kyria probably saw it too. Bad enough the Captain probably knew about it from her files.

After about ten minutes or so, Aradia flittered back into view. She buzzed around in front of them just long enough to catch their attention, then she landed on the ground and morphed back into her normal self.

"Only people I could see outside the town are a handful of hunters and farmers, Sir. Nothing more than that, and I noted where the ones between us and the town are so we can dodge 'em if we want to. But everything else looks cool, we should be good to go."

He could feel her surprise and confusion along the link, but she went gamely along with the question. *It depends on how much of the loss of memory is due to physical damage. The more psychological the block is, the easier it would be to repair the connections and restore the memory. If the brain itself was too damaged in that area of the memory or had been removed all together then there wouldn't be much I could do. If you think of minds like a computer, I can repair or change the software but I can't do much if the hardware is damaged.

Why do you ask?*

Steve frowned. *Kyria seems very distracted. She's out doing something. Have to keep reminding myself she's not just eye candy.*

Steve looked around, *And so is our commander. Somehow I doubt this is 'Let's probe Steve about his past'... so odds are good that either I don't need to know or that they'll tell me.*

She bit her lip at that, her eyes still roaming the woods as they walked, but her thoughts clearly occupied.

*What do you mean, taken? What part of your brain removed? Or was the memory blocked off? If it was only a psychological change, then I can help. If your physical brain was altered, I don't know how much I could do. I'll try, though, if you want. Could you tell me a little bit more about it? I'll have to know some of the connections your mind would still have to the missing memories to have any idea where to start looking.*

To herself she though, Livy sure does get herself involved in everything. I wonder if that's some new quantum power from this universe?
