Big Eyes, Small Mouth (BESM): Nexus Earth - Chapter 5 Interlude: Security for all?

The next couple of days were relatively relaxing for Eiji, as there were no direct personal threats to either of his main charges, Kai and Lily. The US Fleet was made to see sense, CRT-7 even returned the nukes that they had fired at us, after they had been neutralised. Eiji spent that time in relative comfort, not having to spend his duty hours in his power armour, and having only an 8 hour official shift, although as usual he had his meals with some of the rest of the core team. However having had the glimpse of his potential for Bankai he spent a large chunk of his ‘off-duty’ hours in meditation and Tai-Chi like Chi increasing techniques.

Moving further out into space they then rendezvoused with the Dalaraan Corvette carrying Princess Lily’s younger siblings. It was clear to Eiji that the brother, Hayato, had a problem with the obviously close relationship between Lily and Kai, probably based on nothing more than racism. The crush her younger sister showed for Kai was nothing new, Eiji had lost count of the girls that he had seen showing the same symptoms during his time as a history teacher at Kai’s school. She would either get over it herself, or she would soon realise that Kai’s attentions were not going to be diverted from Lily. There was the slim chance that she might try to do something to Lily when she realises that, but Eiji would have time to watch out for that and be ready to take measures if necessary, or more likely, refer the matter on to one of the Captains.

Eiji was glad when they returned to Earth, being on one of the Fleets flagships was comfortable and safe when not under attack, but he was never entirely comfortable when in outer space. He was all to aware of the fragility of his power armour and the lethality of the lack of environment. One day he vowed to rewrite his body with suitable enchantments to allow him to survive the vacuum of space, but until then he would take care that his attacks were suitable to the area he found himself in. It was during this trio back to Earth that he was given his assignment for one they arrived back on Earth. He was slightly shocked to hear that he would be in charge of Security and Law Enforcement for the rebuilding of Neo-Tokyo, but more so when the plan to increase the population at least a hundredfold was revealed to him.

“Let me make sure I have this correct Sensei, you wish me to arrange for the Security and Law enforcement for the city during and after it’s construction, but with no time to check the returning people’s background or records?

Akina smiles to her newest Lieutenant. "That is the size of it Eiji. These people have all worked for Satoshi for at least a year. between the broadcast lockouts, the jammers on the ships and the CRT's on-site I feel safe in doing so."

She smiles that innocent smile only a teenage girl can manage. "Besides, I've already reviewed a great number of personnel, and had Amane extend over two hundred offers to join a special branch of the CRT's Security force. Half of those we made the offer to have backgrounds in Law enforcement, the other paramedic/fire and rescue. This will be the core of your Force. Each one is loyal to Satoshi, especially since we allowed them to bring their families along. I don't forsee any issues there."

"It's a start I realize, but since CRT 13 is also on duty here, we have ample security. Let's face it, even if most are kids, three hundred Spartans in their Mjolnir armor is a very impressive and intimidating SWAT Team..."

"I had no worries with regard to the security staff Sensei. My concern is for the sabotage teams that the renagade SHI may have left behind and what other groups may be trying to infiltrate the islands. No matter, we shall do our duty despite any opposition."

With that Eiji took his leave and went to make his preparations. To begin with he travelled to find one of the few remaining Kage who trained him and enlisted his aid in enacting a ritual to enhance his memory and processing in order to quickly assimilate new skills. This he had used before in his days as ninja for the teams in preparing for a mission, but now they had needed to alter the ritual in order to make the skill acquisition permanant. The next day found Eiji occupied in the library reading a series of texts about a variety of subjects related to law enforcement. By the time that Kai and Lily had officially formalised the alliance between Kai as the new Head of the SHI and Lily as the Heir of the Dalaarn Empire, Eiji had learned the basic skills he felt he would need to at least start his new role.

The next day, while the invitation for SHI members to return to Neo-Tokoyo went out, Eiji was in the city in what was to be the new HQ interviewing members of his new police force and examining the plans for the city while the building was still being constructed about them. The emergency service crews were to be split up into 4 groups of ~25 and placed at stations in each quadrant. In addition to their usual gear they also have a few utility Mecha to call upon as necessary. The police force was more difficult to design the best approach for. Too small a unit and there would be insuffiecient people for the shifts required, too big and there would not be enough units to give a local/neighbourhood level of interaction. The need for SWAT was easily covered as Captain Akina had suggested, but other specialist like forensics/CSI were more difficult to allow for and gave Eiji and his senior officiers several hours of debate before the matter was settled.

Leaving the meeting Eiji headed out into the wilderness, or what was left of it in the devastated islands of Japan. There he made his way to a cave that had been behind a waterfall where he met one of his former masters in the magic of the Kage.

After stripping and meditating for 3 hours in the centre of the circle that he had carved in one flowing stroke in the stone floor of the cave with his Soulsword Inazumi, Eiji was ready to begin tonights incantation. Like the others that he would perform this week it was designed to bring forth a fraction of the internal Ki that he continued to develop and to form it into a constant protection for his body. As he does so the great dragon 'tattoo' outline that appeared covering his body when he first gained Inazumi gains a little colour to some of its scales.

Completing the incantation at dawn, Eiji dresses and grabs another hour's meditation before returning to the city and his day of work.

Arriving at the HQ an hour before the official shift change, as many of the staff did he changed and joined them in the gym for morning excerise and kata to help bring their minds and bodies awake and centred for the day.

Morning meetings brought the usual problems of petty crime, admin and supply requests. Most of these were trivial, but as he learnt more about his new job, Eiji was starting to be concerned that some of the 'petty crimes' were perhaps starting to form a pattern. One that suggested that a couple of small groups of more organised people had arrived in the city. Whether they were deliberate saboteur's or simply criminal gangs didn't really matter at this stage, now they needed to be found and captured.
