Big Eyes, Small Mouth (BESM): In the Shadows of the City - Chapter 3b Hello and Goodbye (Team 1)

Jim was stunned by the carnage, and the personal horror that Skye had to be going through. He wanted to lash out, but knew that the real culprits where the demons, not Ken, and they would be counting on such a reaction. Their only chance now was to be smart in how they fought them, pick off their support and find out their weaknesses, if any. Above all they had to make sure that any that went down stayed down. Perhaps it would weaken the remaining ones. He needed to ask the Ancient One more about these, but typically he had vanished after a few remarks.

"We need to go upstairs, Jim. Skye's going to have it worse than us. It's my fault. Let's not lose Skye too."

With that Ken went to the elevator first. If that failed, he began going up the stairs, nor running, but taking them two at a time. He didn't bother worrying about his being a trap. He didn't care. Losing Skye would be too much. So much had gone wrong tonight ... not Skye too.

Ken gives Skye her room and circles around quietly to see the note. Reading it, he shutters - another knife to the heart. What were they going to do?

Wait ... how could they do this much carnage so fast? Could this have been set up before the battle (Ha!) in the street? Was this some part of a darker game ... or was he just getting paranoid?

Jim pauses briefly on each floor, adding up how long he thinks it should have taken to cause so much carnage. Much too long is the obvious answer, there is no way that they should have been able to do this after defeating the team. Which leaves teh wuestion of when did they do it, and is there others that they have already slaughtered that we don't know about yet.

In Skye's room there is little he can do, but simply be there waiting for if or when she needs someone to lean on, or shout at.

It took some time, but Skye became aware of the note. She lifted it and blinked away tears just enough to read it. When she heard her mother's voice, speaking the words of the note to her, she broke down again, sobbing all the harder.

Eventually, she ran out of tears and released her mother's corpse, standing. She pulled a blanket out of the closet and covered the body, her blue eyes weary. Without a word, she walked past the young men watching her and into her bedroom. Pulling out an oversized bag, she began to pack it, throwing clothes into it carelessly. The only objects she actively rejected were her school uniforms, tossing them aside.

"Wou- Would someone please get all the food out of the kitchen?" she said suddenly. "No point in it going to waste." Her voice was a dead monotone, thick with tears.

Jim nodded sombrely and headed for the kitchen, once there he quickly located the bin bags as the biggest available and fills as many as it takes to empty the cupboards, fridge and freezer contents.

Poking his head back into whatever room people are in when he has finished he saays simply, "Done, lets go."

Ken could see it. Part of her was dying too, like Lindh. There was nothing he could do to save her. What right did he have to interfere again in another's life. All he could do was sit back and watch her bring together the shards of her shattered life. No more school for Skye. Was there only room for vengeance ... in her life ... in any of theirs?

She nodded at Jim. "Let's get back to the shrine," Skye said softly. "The others are probably there by now." She didn't allow herself to think that they may not have survived. She wasn't even thinking of her mother as a casualty yet; there was a black hole in her soul where everything was going. She was operating on autopilot, following the plan that had cemented itself as she had released her mother's cool corpse.

Skye shouldered her duffel bag and left the only home she'd ever known, walking into blood, shadows and darkness.

The Fate of Priestesses of the Sun and Moon is one of loss and pain. Peace is something only Death can bring, but only through their suffering and sacrfice can they truly bring about The Light needed to vanquish the Darkness. Hand in Hand with the champions, they shall damn the world to fire and shadow, or bless it with Salvation and Light.

In some small part of their minds, their very souls in Skye and Keiko's cases, Everyone hears the words, and their truth.
