Aberrant: Stargate Universe - SG24: Mission to P3X-559

The chairs were still warm from SG23 when SG24 arrived. General O'Neill looked a bit restless having been at this for two hours already, but such was the burden of command. "Welcome. Have a seat and we'll get started. First of all let me congratulate you on completing the training successfully. Now it is time to send you out on your first mission." He pressed a button on a remote and images appeared on the screen on the wall. They were obviously taken from a malp. The Stargate was surrounded by forest. "This next image was taken by a flying drone about five clicks west from the gate." The image showed a mideveal looking town it's largest structure appeared to be a Cathdral.

"We did not detect any Goa'uld technology or direct presence, but of course taking pictures from this height would make that hard to tell. This will be a first contact situation and we will be relying on your team to meet and greet with these folks and see if you can establish how they came to be there and make sure that the Goa'uld don't have a current presence on the planet. If it is Goa'uld free you are to come back and report and we'll send in a negotiator team to make trade agreements and study the population. If there are Goa'uld, you should investigate and discover what you can. Gear up for a standard first contact mission. You leave at 12:00 hours. Any questions?"

Vinny was glad to have a mission at last. Even if it was with the wrong people.

Sounds easy enough, fucking cakewalk.

"Agriculture based sir?"

Vinny examined the structures more thoroughly, attempting to get a grasp of their engineering capability. Were the denizens likely the ones who built the cathedral? Or was it simply the object of some culture worship, being the remnants of their past long forgotten?

Bet they all smell like goat shit

Omar was glad to get off base and get the chance to get into a fight. Not that he would start one, but if it came, he would enter it with relish. He had to make sure what his options were.

"What are the rules of engagement? Are we to enter combat with the Goa'uld if we come in contact?"

Another thought ocurred to him. "I can use a weapon, but I fight much better with my hands and body. Do I still need to carry a weapon as protocol?"

Taylor waits patiently until he has a moment to interject. "I'm assuming by first contact you mean this to be a largely diplomatic mission? And from the architecture, I'm assuming something like maybe a 14th century level of technological ability? Are there any other notable settlements? If there are pockets of population, being seen to play favorites could hurt us in the long run."

The General replied, "We only know of the one town within range of the drone. It does appear to be agriculturally based. We do see roads heading off in several directions, so we assume there are other towns or settlements but they will be far enough away that you will not be contacting them. You only need to worry about the town near the base."

Looking to Omar, "Yes, you should carry a weapon. Even if you don't need it you might have to lay down cover fire for your teammates to allow them the seconds it takes to move to a better position. As for rules of engagement you are to make peaceful contact with the locals, assess whether there is a Goa'uld thread and if there is make a judgment call as to how to proceed. You have a check in scheduled for 3 hours after arrival. We will dial the gate from this side and you can make radio contact and update us on your situation."

"Do we know of any wildlife or domesticated animals visible from the drone or the malp? If so, I may be able to get us some basic intel so that we can scout from a distance." He turns to the Captain, "Also, We don't want to give away our special abilities, so we should appear to be regular soldiers, which means no rank markings, no special gear except for mission appropriate, and everyone carries what a typical soldier would." Turning back to the General, "Any kind of info on weapons, or is that an on-site discovery issue?"

General O'Niell shrugged, "No pictures of the wildlife. We also did not see any weapons from the pictures, but given the fact that the town is not walled, and we didn't get pictures of guard patrols it is likely that they are at peace with their neighbors. As for uniforms it is a standard issue mission."

"Dismissed", the General turned back to his aide and started talking about something else as he moved toward his office.

The team spent the next two hours getting ready for departure. In the locker room a GDC code was determined and memorized by each of the team members, new codes were decided on before each mission for security reasons. Then once they were geared up they headed down to level 28 to be issued their weapons from the armory and report to the gate room for departure.

Inside the gate room the team waited some nervous some eager. The general could be seen in the control room looking down through the big observation window. As the little hand on the clock hit the top of the hour the gate began to dial out. The massive ring began to spin to the sound of gears whirring and machinery coming alive. As each of the symbols locked into place the tension in the air built. To Vinny it was old hat but to the rest it was all new. Finally the last symbol locked and a titanic feel of energy was released as the vertical vortex of the coalescing wormhole atomized the very air in it's way. Then it had collapsed down into the stable wormhole it's surface looking like liquid mercury.

In good military order Vinny took lead as the point man and headed through the gate without any sentimental BS, he had done this many times after all. The rest of the team approached the event horizon with a mixture of awe and trepidation. They each in turn touched and then entered the gate, their atoms being disassembled and then reassembled far across the galaxy.

On the other side the gate stood in a relatively small clearing in the forest, a road through the trees obviously leading off in the direction of the town. The clearing was deserted.

Vinny surveyed the landscape, noting the types of trees for their probable lumber value.

Typical softwoods, primates prolly use this shit.

The rippling sound that accompanied the exit of his comrades made him turn around and look to the Captain.

Well Captain Nards, here's your chance.

"All clear sir, well-maintained road at 3 appears to head to town."

The sensation of travel through the wormhole was different, if not a bit disorienting. Omar had been assured that it would pass with time. On the other side was a forest with a clearing and a road.

If we see any animals, I want to know what they know about any Goa'uld or other threats. Everyone else, stay alert, but be friendly. We are here to make friends. Not start a war."

Steve thought, *Shoot. Forgot to see if I could 'ask' the star gate anything. Probably should wait to try that until after I'm on the other side anyway.*

Steve moved to the center of the formation and nervously turned on his 'quiet' field.

Taylor takes the middle position as directed, gauging two meters as best he can. Stepping carefully, and slowly, he maintains pace with the others. Questions quickly arise in his mind, but he dismisses them, thinking it best to keep quiet. There should be time for questions later.

  • 2 weeks later...

Vinny examined the ground around the Stargate as they all came into formation. He stopped and knelt briefly, laying his hand out in the traditional tracker's pose.

"Captain, someone's beat us to the punch." Vinny said standing up as he turned to Omar. "There's lots of traffic gone through here recently."

The hair on the back of his neck was rising.

Don't like the smell of this.

Once the tracks were pointed out to the other members of the team it became pretty obvious than it was true. The prints were solid and clear to see in the soft ground, the feet that made them were not wearing what Wright knew as the distinctive patterns of armored Jaffa. They looked like regular plain soled boot. Perhaps the people of this world traded with off-worlders? No way to know without further investigation, and that was what the team was there for.

Omar had the team form up and head out with Wright taking point. With the notice of the traffic around the gate everyone was on heightened alert during the trek toward the town.

(I need perception + awareness rolls from everyone on the team please.)

Omar scanned his surroundings. He was alot better at fighting a target he could see, than searching for one.

After the tracks are indicated, Taylor feels a slight tinge of dread. So far from home, with only one way back, and with little information regarding the area, and what to expect, the weight of the situation finally starts to settle in. But his curiosity was still aroused, and after all, he did agree to this.

Taylor pauses, slowly taking in the surroundings.

Init Order

Courier: 19

Taylor: 18

Omar: 17

Vinny: 14

Jaffa: Holding their actions until you get closer or until they realize you notice them.

Vinny tensed, it was RL1337 all over again. There were people in the forest ahead. He had just caught a glint of reflected light off something metal. The team was almost to their position.

Omar's height gave him a little added perspective and he could see a grey armored head just peeking out of a depression in the ground ahead and to the right.

Taylor caught a slight movement that was just not natural. Since the team knew there was activity in the area he immediately reached out with his telepathy and sensed six other minds ahead. It was an ambush, they were Jaffa. (The telepathy is your action this round. You can still move however, or dodge if needed.)

Courier like the others expected trouble and was not disappointed when it came. Ahead in the woods there were people lying in wait. All of them behind cover of some kind, waiting to spring a trap.

(((OOC: Talking is effectively "free"? That is, I don't have to declare a separate action, provided I'm not going into some lengthy Hamlet style soliloquy?)))

[R:1 I:18]

Taylor pauses mid stride, but only for a moment.

Quietly he says, "Sir, six ahead. They're waiting to ambush." Taylor takes pains to not look at the Jaffa directly while talking, so as not to alert the enemy.

"Acknowledged." Omar moves to point and begins giving orders to his team over their mics.

"Lt. Wright- As soon as I draw their fire, I want you to circle around their left and assault their first position. Use a grenade on the group in the depression if you can. Meet me in the woods once your done."

"Spc's Taylor and Courier. I want you to hit the deck. Once the Lt. has cleared the 1st group, I want you in that position, returning fire."

Omar turns back around and takes a deep breath.

[Round 1: Ini 14]

Vinny nodded and took off to the left into the underbrush as 'O Captain, my Captain' disappeared in a whoosh of air.

Getting to the best vantage point he could in so short a time while maintaining some cover, he materialized one of his black mortars, gave it a quick kiss and tossed it towards the group of waiting assailants.

As Omar began to move the shit hit the fan and bolts of golden energy lanced out through the suddenly quiet forest. Three of bolts of light were aimed at the biggest most threatening looking target, but due to his quick sprint all bolts missed, but Omar could feel the heat from one it passed so close to his shoulder. The other three Jaffa fired their bolts with better or worse results but in all cases the bolts missed. If you hadn't known from weapon's training that they were powerful weapons the bark splintering from trees hit near you would have been proof enough.

(Top of Round 2. The Jaffa have good cover +2 diff unless you manage to outflank them.)

Vinny's mortar went off with a tremendous BOOM, sending dirt sticks and phantom metal in all directions. The Jaffa had good cover so it was not nearly as effective as it could have been. Given their cover it was hard to determine what if any damage was done, but there were grunts of pain from behind the trees.

The Jaffa were also distracted for a few seconds.

(Please be sure and post the round and your Init at the top of your post. You don't have to go in order, but please don't jump ahead of the current round until everyone has gone.)

Steve squeezed off a round and got lucky as one of the Jaffa peaked around a tree just in time to be taken squarely in the chest. He didn't go down from the wound but it clearly did hit from the slight stagger. Taylor on the other hand was not as lucky and his shots missed, but did have the advantage of keeping one of the Jaffa pinned down and unable to return fire for a few seconds.

Omar zipped through the trees dodging between trunks and leaped just in time to come down at two of the Jaffa taking shelter behind a large conifer. One of the pair easily stepped aside, but the other was caught in the flying tackle and carried to the ground beneath the big man's muscular frame. He hit with a grunt of lost air and immediately began to struggle to get free.

Finally Vinny plowed forward shield raised before him. Luckily as the bolts streaked through the forest toward him the shield proved to withstand the energy, but the power of the two blasts that hit the shield could definitely be felt.

His aegis before him, Vinny strode quickly ahead, closing the distance to the Jaffa with a bravado borne upon his new found abilities. Seeing the glint of body armor emerge from behind a tree, Vinny quickly sidestepped and unloaded with his P90, the satisfying explosion of sparks signaling a hit.
