Aberrant: Stargate Universe - First Meeting: SG-24

Omar looked over what personnel files were available for his other team members. He was excited to work with a new group of people once again, and wondered if they would mesh well as a team. You have done this before, he reassured himself, while the butterflies in his stomach danced stacatto. They were an interesting bunch and he hoped the introductions would go smoothly, especially with Lt. Wright. He needed to reassure each of them that he was up to the task.

When everyone was seated, he addressed them. "I know some of you have heard that I am not of this earth and may question my loyalties. To those who are, I assure you, I am of earth and I seek to keep it safe."

Omar smiled and stood, attempting to look as little intimidating as possible. "First, I would like everyone to make introductions. After you all have gone, I will tell you a bit about me and how I came to be here."

Taylor doesn't bother hesitating. He stands, and addresses the group. "Hello, everyone. I believe my new, official title is Specialist Price. You can call me Taylor or Doctor if that will be easier. Unless, our Captain here would rather stick with formalities." He pauses for a moment before continuing, "I'm a psychiatrist by trade. As such, I do wish to extend that service to everyone here, and remind you all that Doctor, Patient privilege exists even in a military environment. You all have an open invitation. Our jobs will be stressful, to say the least, and so I hope to be of some assistance to the team in and out of the field."

"But, if we're simply trying to get acquainted, on to something more fun, right? I hate Thai food. Everyone keeps telling me to try it, and I keep giving it a chance and it never takes." He smiles. "I read gossip magazines, both as research, and because once you start it's almost impossible to stop. I grew up in New Hampshire, and I sometimes miss the snow when I spend too much time in California. I don't like LA and I don't recommend visiting. New York is overrated. And I can't stand watching baseball on TV. On the other hand, the best hog dogs are always at baseball games. I was never good at sports, but I am good at puzzles, and I like political cartoons. My former colleague got me to start reading web comics. They're good too. Satire, I believe, is a quite commendable art form, and I think we need more of it. I have a younger sister, and my parents are still married. They're in New Hampshire and she lives in Boston."

He looks around, "Any questions? Anything you guys would like to know before we move on to the next person?"

"Oh, yes. I suppose there's that. I've recently discovered that I'm a telepath, empath, and have a sort of perceptual retention ability. I should add that I don't make a habit of eavesdropping. So no worries about your private space. It'll still be left private." Taylor looks at Omar, "Does that answer your question, Captain?"

Vinny arrives to the gymnasium on time, dressed in his normal work-out attire of a white tank-top, Air Force sweats, and a pair of New Balance. Seeing the Captain sitting at some benches hap-hazardly pulled together near the free weights, Lt. Wright made his way over, saluted and sat down, waiting for the others to arrive.

"Sir."

Vinny smirks, but keeps any comments to himself as he leans back on his hands listening to the Doctor.

Lt. Wright's head snaps over and he looks up at the Doctor.

Oh shit, I hope he didn't hear that.

Omar gives a nod to Taylor as he sits back down and give an expectant look at Vinny, "Lt. Wright?"

Vinny sighs as he stands up and takes a couple steps back to address the team, pointedly staring straight forward, his normal cocky demeanor, for the moment, absent.

"I am Lieutenant Vincent Wright, I have been with the Stargate program for three years. I am the sole-surviving member of SG-4. The rest of my team was taken down in an ambush by the NID."

Vinny stops for a moment, a flash of pain crossing his face, but it quickly vanishes and he continues.

"I have degrees in Explosive and Civil Engineering with the experience to back it up. I speak Arabic, know my way around a gun and can handle myself in a fight.

As far as my skills go, I don't seem to need to sleep...ever, I can spot structural and situational weaknesses that were never apparent to me before. I can make regenerating bullet-proof glass walls that will move at my command, which is good, because I can also make bombs out of thin air."

What appears to be an all-black mortar appears his hands briefly before disappearing again.

"Last, but not least, as far as I know anyway...I have functioning gills."

Lt. Wright will turn slightly red at that, if in anger or embarrassment it is not readily apparent, as he pulls one side of his shirt out of his sweats and exposes his chest where a set of three slits can be seen inbetween the ribs on his side. Vinny then sits down and casually survey's the gym, seeing who exactly just saw that.

Lt. Jacobs bristles at hearing the language of his homeland's enemies on his team, but stamps down his reaction with reason. This isn't home. We need to work together. He rubs at the patch on his left shoulder where an Israeli flag rests, instead of one for the USA.

He stands up, and steps forward, "Shalom. My name is Mark Jacobs. I am a member of the Israeli Ground Forces, or Kheylot Ha-Yabasha. My rank is Segen Mishne, or Second Lieutenant. I am priveleged to have worked with the SGC for about a year. I was always an adept scout and point man. I am good at intrusion, and noticing details. I am also skilled at wilderness survival. My specialist abilities are, I can speak with animals, and I can deaden sounds I and my gear make. Also, I seem to be able to call upon the keen senses of a bloodhound or shark. I now excel at all sorts of sports and physical fitness activities."

His hands reach up tentatively and remove his sunglasses, revealing two cold, black orbs, with a fine outline of white at the edges.

"I also have been having issues with my eyes, as you can see. They work fine, if not better than before, but they do creep people out. I will be wearing sunglasses on most, if not all of our missions, so that I will not cause a stir among the others out there. If you have any questions, please, fire away. Oh, the general assigned me just after the briefing ended. Here's my file."

Drew had remained silent throughout the meeting so far, playing rock songs inside his head and listening with one ear to the information the others revealed about themselves. As Jacobs handed Omar his file, Drew stood, yawing and stretching, and setting his internal soundtrack to 'mute'. "I'm next, right? My name's Andrew Fischer. Used to work for the NID, reverse-engineering alien tech, black tech, shit like that, till my change. I'm a pretty good all-rounder far as engineering goes, and my science-fu is pretty strong in general. Ever since...the change, whatever, they tell me I've got enhanced cognitive, sensory, and reaction time due to some weirdness in my brain. Sure helps with engineering. Something else, too...I'm lucky. The eggheads - the other eggheads, I mean - think I've been artificially enhanced to take advantage of opportunities other people miss, but it sure feels like plain old dice-of-the-gods luck to me. Anyway. That's me. Nice to meetcha." He nodded to Omar and slumped back down in his seat.

"Well. I guess it's time you know a little about me." Omar rose and faced the rest of them his hands clasped behind his back.

"As many of you know, I am not from this universe. While that may seem to be hard to understand and accept, it is the truth."

"I was born in Iraq in 1979 to a Kurdish family of the Christian faith, is was not the same Iraq as the one here." He puased to let that information sink in. "We had a Saddam and a Baath party and he was as brutal there as he was here. What was different about the world I was born into; was that people like you and I came into our powers through an 'erutpion', and it was something that happened randomly to the world's population at a rate of 1 for every million person. There were also no Stargates."

"Needless to say, I and a few others found ourselves on a ship that traveled through time and space in the blink of an eye. We could even traverse universes. Unfortunately we were unable to return to our home earth, and had to live our lives on alternate ones."

"We had a purpose: To stop a war that would kill billions on earth in the future. It was a conflict between novas and humans. Therefore, we used the ship to influence outcomes on a number of alternate earths until we could find a way to stop that war. To do that, required us to start in the 1920's and work through the decades until the mid 21'st century. I spent over a hundred years defending earth from tyrant, sociopathic Novas, and even aliens. I am over a 135 years of age."

"What I bring to the SG program is over a hundred years of experience protecting earth, as well as being a Nova. Those that sent me here weakened for they they must have felt that we were too powerful for this timeline, even if we used it responsibly. In addition to being a former Olympic Wrestler, I can run at over 500 kph and have supertough skin and bones. I can deflect most types of small arms fire and energy weapons. I speak Kurdish, Arabic, Farsi and English."

Omar paced back and forth briefly. "We are all Novas." he continued. "With our power comes a tremendous responsibility to do good and do our best to protect earth. As your commander, I hope to show each of you tricks and pitfalls to posessing quantum as well as earn your respect and confidence."

"Any questions? Concerns?"

"Sir, I have a question or two. How long will we have to train together before our first mission? And do you have any ideas what roles we'll take in the team? Or is that to be decided based on training?" Lt. Jacobs sits down after asking his questions, and puts his sunglasses on, patiently awaiting the Captain's response. An Iraqi. This job gets more and more interesting.

Vinny watched with a certain sense of pride as the person he had helped rescue stood up, looking remarkably good for having taken 4 gunshot wounds, though a slight wince did briefly flash across Andrew's face as he stood up.

NID civvy!!! Arrogant dick, probably caused all this shit, should have left him in his cell to rot...probably.

Lt. Wright's eye visibly twitched as anger once again took control of his facade. Andrew's self-profiling obviously causing some kind of adverse reaction within Vinny. Only the Captain's presence seemed to have kept Vinny from doing something he probably would have regretted. As he pulled his gaze from the NID operative, Vinny turned his attention to Omar, shaking his head wistfully in a look of total disbelief.

How...why...why me? How did I get stuck with these freaks...am I being punished for letting them down? Should I have died with the rest of them? I don't want to die, but these fucks are gonna get me killed! ...unless...unless, oh fuck no! I'm getting stuck on dogwatch!

Dogwatch being the term that the recently departed SG-4 had coined for missions which seemed to be for punishment, when punishment could not necessarily be dealt with in official channels. The prime example being when Major Hadley and SG-4 had indirectly caused General Hammond to be late to his granddaughter's birthday party. Not an infraction on its own, and definitely not worthy of anything as severe as a court martial, at least not to anyone but General Hammond. But when General Hammond is the one assigning missions, ...Hell can be served up in large portions.

So when the MALP had came back from P3-110 showing ruins, and 'unusual' atmospheric readings, SG-4 magically came to the top of the rotation and won the assignment. 'Unusual' meant the prevalence of an airborne bacteria that produced large amounts of an organic sulfur compound as waste, and while not particularly harmful to breathe, the team was there for two weeks and the the smell of rotten eggs took a month to get rid of, not to mention won the team a trip through decontamination.

Needless to say, as Omar said his introduction, Vinny heard none of it, instead having been reminiscing upon memories he would rather soon forget.

Shuddering as if to shake off what had happened, Vinny looked at Omar, catching the last.

"What we need to do first is make sure that each of you learn to control your powers. That may take a few days to a week or more." Omar looked at Lt. Jacob's eyes. "I also want to be sure that each of you understands what 'taint' is, its effects on the body and how you accumulate more. That will mean that you will spend at least a few days in the classroom."

Addressing the Leutenant's second question, Omar says simply. "I will need to discuss team rolls with the higher ups. All of you will have combat aned weapons training, as everyone will be in dangerous situations."

"After training, I will have a better idea of what each of your capabilities are. Yes it will be based on training."

Taylor raises his hand slightly, not sure how else to get attention.

"Captain, I've already begun my specialized training with Major Carter, Doctor Jackson, and Specialist Donnigal. The combat training would probably be most helpful for me, as well as whatever classroom prep is needed. I'm sure the Major has a file for you on what we've covered together so far. Not that we're done, by any means."

Taylor turns, "Perhaps, Lieutenant Wright, wouldn't mind running me through some basic combat?"

Omar looks thoughtfully at Talor and nods. "As a telepath, Kyria would be the one to help you with telepathy, and it's good that you have already started."

"What I need to teach all of you about are special techniques like 'node ping' and 'power-maxxing'. It is of extreme importance that all of you learn about taint, and its side effects, as some of you are already showing its effects."

Omar looks right at Lt. Jacobs. "Your eyes for example."

Vinny has nothing but contempt for you. smile

Lt. Wright's gaze briefly flashes over to Bachelor, raising up one eyebrow in a look very reminiscent of Teal'c.

"Anythin's possible, Ba-- Taylor."

Vinny then turned his attention back to Omar, having finally found an opening to ask his question, now that the riff-raff had shut-up.

"Captain, do you have any military experience? And is there any particular reason that you had us dress down and meet in the gym?"

Omar's eyes narrowed briefly. This one is trouble. He either didn't listen or refuses to.

"What did I say just a minute ago, Leutenant Wright?" Omar's voice was calm. While Omar had no 'military' experience, the Paragons were a para-military force.

"As for why we dressed down. I don't think your going to want to go for a 5 mile run in your BDU's."

Vinny's eyes narrow in response, as his blood pressure rises again, his face turning a brilliant shade of red.

Through clenched teeth, "I heard many things sir, but it did not answer my question."

Vinny was taking a gamble, but hell if he was going to back down after being called out like that.

Omar was not sure where the man's antagonism came from, but it needed to be quashed. "To be more specific. I spent a century as part of a para-military organization known as the Paragons. We worked closely with various militaries from around the world, and offworld in some cases.. We functioned both in an advisory and participatory manner. Were we 'military', in the strict sense, no."

His eyes narrowed, reflecting an impatient irritation. "If the General thought I was not qualified to lead this team, he would have picked someone else."

Omar walked up to Lt. Wright and leaned down to where the LT sat. Omar's brought his face only inches from Vinny's and whispered sternly so that only Vinny could hear. "You WILL respect the chain of command, and your superior officers. Leutenant."

Para-military...hmm, we'll see, definitely has the 'tude.

As if having made a decision, Lt. Wright's attitude neutralized, though he was obvioulsy not intimidated in the slightest.

Nodding, "Yes Captain, my apologies."

"If there are no further questions." Omar backed away with a nod and stood in front of the small group.

"Leutenant Wright. Would you lead us in some stretches." Omar yielded the floor to Vinnie and took his place with the others.

Lt. Wright stepped out separating himself as the rest of the freshly minted defenders lined up. He gave himself a moment to look closely at the people that would form his new team, attempting to keep the trepidation off his face.

Bet my leave that the Dick and the Bach (batch) dunna make it. Doolittle should be good, seen him around. Fuck! What the hell is with his eyes? They never gonna be as good...

Standing at rest, Vinny took a deep breath and let his voice carry with the familiar ring of command, "Ok, creeps...and sir...we don't really know each other, and that will change soon, but I cannot ascertain your physical capability by staring at your ugly faces...or yours, sir...so barring the Cap's veto, I recommend we do fifteen on the ellipticals before we stretch, we don't need any pulled or torn muscles on the first run."

With Omar's nod, he turns to move towards the equipment, moving to walk with Doolittle.

"You said you'd been here awhile, they stick you with the Reds, haven't seen you 'round."

Which by Vinny's standards of 'not seeing him around', meant he didn't get drunk at the bar in the Springs.

What?! That was all omar could think when the new arrival announced his name. The man looked almost identical to the Steve Courier of his own time and Omar was sure that he was an Alternate reality version of Steve. He wondered if the life experiences were similar as well and what kind of impact they had on personality.

"Welcome to SG-24, Specialist Courier." Omar said while he tried his hardest not to twist and mangle the elliptical machine that was almost too small for him. "Grab an elliptical and warm up. We are doing a little run this morning."

Turning to Vinny, Mark says "No, I've only been with the teams recently. I worked topside for almost a year, coordinating travel arrangements to and from the facility." Lt. Jacobs smiles wanly, and clambers aboard an elliptical, "You may remember me from that." He begins the warm-up without any protest, and watches Vinny with those cold, dead eyes.

So Doolittle's a travel agent, so much for credibility.

"Yeah, probably. --You know...your eyes are fuckin' creepy man."

Damn, Fabio...now the freak show is complete. Wonder what part I play? Fucking Ringmaster.

After everyone finished their warm-up, Vinny led through a series of stretches on the mats, starting with the neck and ending with ankle rolls.

Taking a quick shot of water, "Sir, Gumby would be jealous, they're ready."

Andrew tries his best to warm up, he really does, but he's a scientist, for God's sake, not a fuckin' jarhead, and he's not too terribly used to physical exertion. Not that he's lazy, but shit like this is boring without fail. But he at least goes through the motions, singing the Drive By Truckers "Sands of Iwo Jima" under his breath and waiting for something interesting to happen.

A 'new' guy. That was kinda interesting. Andrew looked him over.

Lt. Jacobs grins at Vinny's comment, "Yes, aren't they? They say the eyes are the window to the soul." He continues through the exercises without complaint. When the new arrival reaches the group, he smiles and watches Specialist Courier carefully, not bothering to hide his odd eyes. When the stretches are over, he clambers to his feet and stands at ease.

Lt Jacobs smirks, "Only to my enemies. To my friends, I'm a swift and deadly hunter who makes short work of our enemies. And kindly remember what I am." He points to the Israeli flag on his left arm. "I don't do hell. That's for the goyim to fear, not I." He smiles genuinely for the first time, softening the edge in his eyes, but still not making them warm or lively.

"Good to know."

Vinny seems content to let it be at that, and starts to program the machine for his warm up when he turns back.

"You grow horns and I'm cappin' your ass."

At that, he stuffs the buds of his Ipod in his ears and mounts the machine.

Goddamn freak show.

"Lt. Jacobs." Omar askes from his elliptical. "Despite my Kurdish heritage and nation of birth, I harbor no ill will towards Israel." Omar decided that it would be best to get that out of the way before it ever became an issue.

"I don't want any hard feelings between us because of our backgrounds." Omar replied, "Israel and its neighbors are still in conflict here, and its effects spill over into other areas."

After the briefest of pauses, he continues to address the Israeli Leutenant. "By the way. Has anyone discussed your eyes and the reason you have them?"
