Aberrant: Stargate Universe - SG23 Getting to Know the Team

Ryan Hawke

Ryan calmly shot a game of pool alone while he waited for the rest of his team to join them. His shots were perfect, and he made one or two trickshots he knew he couldn't have tried before being enhanced. He chuckled to himself. "I can get used to this."

He'd arranged four of the chairs so that they faced each other off to one side and simply waited for the remainder of his team to show up. "Two Military, two non-military, good for balance I guess, but we'll have to see how theyadapt to abit more regimentation."

He'd read their files, and was intrigued to say the least. Though in his opinion, someone's file only said so much about them. He'd always prefered actually talking to them, that gave him a better measure of what sort of person they were."

Kyria entered quietly and watched Ryan unnoticed for minute. She picked up a pool que and took a shot after he finished one.

"Guess I'm evens," she grinned at him. She was curious as to what this would be like and hoped she'd feel more useful here than she had with the Paragons.

Samuel walked in shorly after Kyria, he nodded and said hello to the other two there and simply stood and watched them shoot. He watched the forces people were applying and the trajectories of the balls, and tried to work out the kinetic coefficient of friction of the felt of the table, as well as analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of each shot.

Man I wish I could be inside a computer right now...

Ryan nods. He watches her make her shots, and nods approvingly.

"So I've read the clinical files they gave me for all of you, and I have to say I have some questions."

He smiles as he looks to Kyria. "You really are from another world aren't you?" There was a look of true curiosity in his eyes, and in the tone of his voice.

He looks over to Samuel. "And you, Samuel are an expert with Computers and Technology according to the file. That's pretty good, because I have only a relatively basic understanding of both."

"The main thing I'd really like to know is what you are capable of, after the enhancement process. In fairness I will go first."

"After exposure to the Alien artifact, I've found my physical strength increased to the point that I can lift a full metric ton and mydexterity increased to the point that I move almost faster than i can think. Beyond that, I was able to shrug off a shot from a submachine gun. Not particularly impressive compared to some things I've heard some of the others capable of, but perfect enhancements for my tastes."

Kyria grinned at him and nodded. "Actually, since coming here I've become closer to baseline than I was at home. I think the Watchers, the people that sent me here, did something to Omar and I so that we wouldn't run roughshod over the place or break it on accident." She shrugged, "No proof of that, it's just what I think. It seems like something they might do."

"I was born a nova, so I don't have a before and after story. I am primarily a telepath, but in addition to that I am stronger, faster, hardier, smarter, and generally more perceptive than baselines. I heal far more quickly than baselines, even more quickly than most novas, and I can survive in almost any environment. Those are the most advantageous things I can think of that I can do from what Dr. Jackson said missions are like. I'm sure there are other things that will come up later, but in all honesty I'm not the best judge of what's considered an unusual ability or level of ability here. I'm used to being around other novas, who are all pretty unique in their abilities, as opposed to baselines."

As she spoke she perched up on the pool table, nonchalantly leaning forward at an almost impossible angle to balance. She looked thoughtful, "Oh, and I have a eufiber colony," her t-shirt rippled into a long-sleeve turtleneck complete with a silver pendent in the shape of the Stargate Earth glyph. "Although it doesn't seem to be doing as well, either. Maybe the quantum in this reality is simply less refined or effective than the quantum in my home universe. Or we're just not as attuned to it."

Ryan nods mentally cataloguing her abilities. "The Telepathy would be most useful, as I imagine it easily clears most language barriers."

He's quick to add. "Though I will not ask you to use this ability unless we are without recourse. I can imagine it would unnerve people, and you yourself, what you can find in people's thoughts."

"That's a neat trick." says a voice belonging to a man who seemed to have come from nowhere. "I could really use some of that about now." The voice is deep and surly, matching the short yet hulking body it emanates from. Long thick raven hair frames a sculpted face from which two solid crystal eyes regard them. Despite the "blind man's stare" he is actually smiling, adding to the unnerving effect of so massive a figure sneaking up on them with such utter ease.

It is immediately apparent why he made the comment he did. It was a self-depreciating joke. The SGC had still failed to find clothing that fit him properly...if it was wide enough it was too long or vice versa. He had finally had enough of the restriction in his shoulders and torn the sleeves off making his BDU top a makeshift muscle tee. Similarly his pants were torn off at the knee...they had needed to get pants for an obese man in order for him to get his muscular thighs into the legs. A drawstring kept them attached. His feet were bare as well since so shoes were made anywhere in the world that would fit them.

Samuel noted Hawke's abilities and his note of the other two's abilities. But he really perked up at the note that Kyria was from another 'world', which turned out to be 'universe'.

He listened intently to what Kyria said, though it was easy to tell that he didn't understand everything that she said. Once she was finished, it was easy to see the wheels turning in his head, and he only half listened to Hawke's response, and barely noted the sudden appearance of the newcomer.

His own explination of his abilities was only half-hearted as well. He quickly said, "Yeah, I'm smarter than anybody else, I can project myself into computer systems, pick out flaws when I take the time to look at it... and I can generate enough electricity to run a toaster."

The reason for his half-hearted attempt was easily recognized as he never really took his attention off of Kyria. His questions he asked her were much more authentic. "Kyria, you said that you come from a different universe? From the files that I was able to get my hands on, there are several different universes that people here have visited, using various technologies; do you know how those 'watchers' came to bring you here?

Also, we're called 'novas' here because the light and pain we experienced when touching the Ancient device was 'like a super nova going off', but why do you call us novas? Was there a similar experience in your universe?

You said that you were born a nova, so this is something that can be passed from parent to child? Does it work if only one parent is a nova, or do both have to be? Do the abilities of the child reflect at all the abilities of one or both of the parents? Is there a preference for one parent over the other?

I assume 'baseline' is what you call people without abilities, what does that mean?

You said 'eufiber colony'? What is it and where did it come from? What properties does it have and is there a chance that we could make or find some here?

And, you said 'the quantum' here... what is that? What would cause it to be more or less 'effective' or 'refined', and how would one 'attune' to it?"

After his barrage, he realized that it must seem like he's interrogating her. He blushed a little and looked somewhat sheepish. "Sorry about that... it just seems like you know so much..."

Kyria gave the newcomer a curt nod of acknowledgment, but focused on answering Samuel's questions. "It's okay. I do know more about novas than the people here, because on my Earth they'd been around for nearly a century before I was born. Lets see....the Watchers sent Omar and I here through a warp. Something like the Stargate wormholes, only generated by a person instead of a machine. The term nova in my world came from the appellation of homo sapien novus, the new man, to those with the genetic sequence to form nodes and thus manipulate quantum energy. Nova was a nickname."

She was answering his questions in order and stopping to think briefly between each answer to make sure she was giving accurate and concise information, "Novas are an evolution of humanity, and it would be a poor evolution indeed if there were no children. It depends on the parents what the chances are of having a nova child or a baseline child. Here....well, if you all choose baseline partners then you're looking at about a 25% to 50% to have what are called first generation or node novas, and a 50% and up chance of the children carrying the genetic sequence to allow for possible eruption later in life. A node, by the way, is that part in your brain that controls quantum energy and allows you to use your nova powers. There's a very very slim chance that some of the nova women might have second generation nova children. Those children won't have a node, instead the node-tissue is spread out in their body along the lymph system."

She shrugged, "If some of you have children together, then they will definitely be second generation novas. As for powers, it usually follows a least somewhat in vein with the nova parent or parents, though not always. Baseline is just that. Baseline for humanity. Novas and psiads, which it doesn't seem like there are any here, are two evolutionary paths of humanity. Humanity is their baseline."

"Eufiber is something one of the novas in my world could create. It's what their hair became when they erupted. It stores quantum energy, responds and reshapes itself to though command, and provides some measure of protection. Or at least it used to. It definitely wasn't working like it used to in my spar with Declan. As for making more of, I don't know. There were Eufiber knockoffs, synthesized stuff, but it never worked as well as the real thing. Without a nova that makes it I don't see it becoming all the widespread here."

"And quantum," she seemed to roll the word around in her mind for a minute. "Quantum is what makes being a nova possible. It's quintessence, the energy of the universe." She shrugged again. "I don't really have a better answer for it than that."

"Did I catch everything?"

Samuel took in everything that Kyria said like a parched plant soaking up water. His wheels seemed to be turning, processing as he replied. "Yeah, I think that about covered everything... a more thorough explanation of 'quantum' might be helpful, but that pretty much answered my questions. I might have some more in the future though, once I know enough to know what I don't know and need to ask about."

He paused for a few moments, either filing away or finishing processing, and then he turned to the newcomer. "Hey there. My name is Samuel... er, Specalist Lawrence. That's a nice trick you've got there..." He left it hanging, obviously waiting for the new guy go fill in his name.

Samuel took Wolfe's profered hand and shook it. His grip was firm, but no where near hard. He shrugged as he replied, "Not much for labels myself, but I figure that when in Rome... ya'know?"

He released Wolfe's hand and turned to Hawke. "So, we're all here... now what?"

Ryan is suprised that he didn't here Brayden approach, but after what he'd read, he knew it could have been worse if he meant him harm. "Hey Brayden, welcome to the team." He shakes the offerd hand firmly.

He'd listened intently to Kyria's explanation of quantum, Eufiber, and second generation novas and was truly intrigued. "Well the general idea is to learn what each of us is capable of in our own words, and then once we get that out of the way, we're going to head on down to gymnasium and see what kind of shape each of us is in."

He looks to Brayden and quickly gives him a rundown of Kyria, Samuel, and his enhanced abilities and then looks to him expectantly.

Brayden chuckles. "Oh I heard. I've been here for a couple minutes...having fun with my new abilities."

"Im a rather interesting case really. I just found out not so long ago that what I thought was my life was a lie. I had an old life, but that was taken from me by what I have now learned to be the NID. I was tortured, thoroughly brainwashed and then trained methodically to be a perfect tool of infiltration and assasination. A mole who doesn't even realize that he is one until the program takes over."

He pauses, clearing his throat. "You might be wondering how I can be so nonchalant when talking about it. I was a wreck at first its true. Now I feel sort of...reborn. Whatever that thing did it juiced my physiology which leaves me feeling pretty much in orbit most of the time. Blood tests show consistently elevated levels of adrenaline, dopamine, serotonin and endorphins. I'm hyper-aware at all times to the point of distraction at first. Now that I am getting used to the sensations I am more integrated and functioning. I also get a rush from physical exertion...I've hardly been able to stop working out these last two weeks it just feels so good to move!"

"As for the specific alterations...well the docs they tell me my entire skeleton is now basically fused with the same stuff the the Stargate is made from...Nardakka or something. That's how I got so, well...big. I didn't use to look like this. Since my bones are now basically indestructable all the ligaments and tendons got reinforced and my muscles pumped themselves up. Apparently the mineral has some unusual properties but I haven't noticed anything yet. Well...I did figure out one trick but it's a bit painful..."

He holds up one massive arm and flexes his wrist downward. Out pops two footlong razor sharp blades of pure solid quartz-like crystals. It is obvious that they are literally extensions of his radius and ulna bones as they track perfectly from the condyles of the wrist. He grimaces for a moment and then retracts them with an appearance like a melting icesicle on fast forward only without the water. The wounds rapidly seal over.

"I'm stronger than any man should be, I've been too high to sleep for two weeks, my reflexes are off the charts and I'm quiet as kept, in spite of weighing almost 400 lbs. My skin is thick enough to stop a 9mm slug and what does manage to hurt me heals right before my eyes. It would seem that I am one hard sonofabitch to kill now."

"Oh! I keep forgetting but everyone is alwasy a bit creeped out by my eyes. They are made from Nalkaeda too. When I first woke up I thought I had died and was a ghost in Hades. Turns out I was just seeing everything like in X-ray vision. It's not x-rays though so don't get all freaked that I'm irradiating everything I see. Docs say it's a passive effect from the Nalaqua. Pretty psychedelic really. Makes me want to go play Dark Side of the Moon."

Picking up Kyria's ever so subtle frown he adds, "Oh don't worry! It's not like in the movies...I can't just look at you naked or whatever. People just look like bags o' bones with the occasional pacemaker. Good for spotting concealed heat though..."

His description as thorough as he can make it, he just grins with a wide smile and finishes saying, "Cool huh?"

Samuel listened as Braydon described himself. His voice was somewhat distant, as if he were thinking deeply about something wile talking. "X-ray vision and you can turn invisible... interesting. Now, the 'naquadah' in your bones and eyes, now that's interesting. From what I hear, it can work as, basically, a giant capacitor. Maybe I could 'charge up' your bones slowly, so that you can give off a leathal shock... maybe even power a stargate if I charge you up long enough... of course, we'll have to keep you away from explosions... especially the nuclear kind." With that he imitates a big boom.

"Of course, I remember something being said about upping the effeciency of some energy weapons. Let's just hope that we can get that to work for us and not against you."

He then turned from Kyria to Hawke, sounding depressed and slumping his shoulders to match. "The gym... do we have to go to the gym? Can't we go to... like the server or something?"

Ryan shakes his head. "First I want to see just where this team is physically weaker. After we finish a round of excercises we'll get cleaned up and head to the server, and run some different scenarios on the comp where you and Kyria can show me how you'd address certain things and hopefully show Brayden and I just where we need to catch up."

"There may come a time where Brayden and I aren't there, where you have to fight, and I aim to see you win."

He chuckles. "Conversely there will be a time where Brayden and I won't have either of you around to analyze something, work a piece of tech or something of that nature and I want to be confident in the decision I make."

"We all shine in certain areas. my goal is that while none of us can match each other in our chosen areas, we will all be competent enough to do whatever we are required."

Brayden grins at Samual in a dreamy way and says, "Invisible? No not really. Its a learned skill. Ninjas used mobility and stealth to duplicate invisibility. With enough agility its possible to shadow someone indefinitely."

He nods at the suggestion to go work out. "Great!" he says cheerfully.

Ryan Leads them all down to the gym and through a thourough stretching routine before putting them through their paces on the treadmills, testing speed and endurance, and then the weight racks to test physical strength. Finally the four of them end up in one of the sparring areas. "Who wants to go first round against me?"

Link to comment

Brayden's body, despite it's bulk opened easily into splits and he laid his chest down upon the floor. On the treadmills, he and Kyria made no sounds impacting the moving floor, while the other two clomped along rhythmicly. As several other specialists had demonstrated, typical tests of strength and endurance were not enough to challenge physically endowed novas.

When the time comes to spar, Brayden looks to the Major. Since losing the ability to speak with his eyes, Brayden had been learning to exagerate his eyebrow and facial movements so others could read him. He shakes his head, raising eyebrows as if to say "I don't think that's a good idea." He looks to see if one of his other teammates wants to step up.

Samuel didn't disappoint in the guy quite as much as his whining would've suggested. His speed was actually above normal (for a 'baseline', good for running away from fights), as was his stamina (again, for a 'baseline', good for when the fights come running after you). His strength was the only thing that would be classified as 'average', maxing out a little over 45kgs.

When the time came to jump into the sparring ring, Samuel took a step back, really not wanting to do this. He did however start charging himself up... he may not know how to fight, but if anybody touched him (or hit him, or grabed him, etc.) they'd be in for a 'shock'... quite literally.

They danced around the sparring mats, learning each others styles and habits. Kyria was good, far better than would be expected of a civilian; Hawke was better. After nearly ten minutes of sparring in lightening fast kicks and jabs and taking what would have been a brutal amount of punishment for a normal human, Ryan pinned her to the mat and let her tap out. She bounced back up to her feet and grinned at the rest of the team.

"Alright. I broke the ice. You boys are up."

Samuel didn't make a move either towards or away from the mat once the spar was finished. He was still too busy processing everything that he'd just seen.

Suprisingly enough, at least to him, even though he new absolutely nothing about hand-to-hand combat (except of course what he'd seen in Jackie Chan movies and the like), he had been able to pick apart the spar, pointing out things that could've been done better and openings that could've been exploited.

After working up a light sweat sparring with Kyria Ryan smiled. "Your turn Samuel." Samuel looked at him and seemed reticient, and Ryan reached out and grabbed Samuel and was literaly shocked at the resultss being staggered as some form of inherent current surged into him when he touched Samuel's shoulder.

He shook it off after a moment and nodded.

"Ok, learn to intensify that into something really effective and not just suprising and you won't even have to learn how to fight."

He gave him an easy smile. "In all fairness you do need to learn some form of selfdefense in case you're every deprived of that little trick, but I'm impressed."

He looked next to Brayden and nodded. The two of them clashed for a number of minutes, and due to his fighting with Kyria already, Brayden had a bit more stamina than Hawke.

The battle ended in a draw, as their skills were an even match in terms of close combat. Ryan began to wind down after healing a series of injuries and called it off.

"You're damn good Brayden. Maybe even a bit better than me in certain areas."

He looked at everyone. We'll run the obstacle course twice, once as practice, then once for real. Every time we train I want to run it, and I want us to get better with each time."

The run through the Obstacle Course had Brayden First, Kyria Second, The winded Hawke third, and then Samuel last.

After training their bodies, Hawke gave them each an hour to rest and get cleaned up and then meet in one of the computer rooms. It was time to test their minds.

Kyria showed up, looking curious as to what this testing would entail, and sat at one of the computers. It was odd, the difference in technology from home and here. She was still adjusting to the doors in the base and the fact that it didn't have an overriding intelligence running everything. She grinned wryly at herself. Lorean spoiled me.

It took Samuel longer to get to the 'mind' part of the test than might've been expected. However, when one considered the ammount of showering and changing that he reqired to wash away the last reminants of the 'physical' part of the testing, it wasn't so unusual.

Once there, Samuel took advantage of his 'unstructured' time with a computer. First thing he did was see how far he could be away from a computer and still control it mentally, which, unfortunatelly, took up all his time until Hawke showed up and spoiled all the fun.

Simms took the news of his reassignment rather well. He was surprised to hear about the Major moving on, but he knew that's how life in the military went. He hoped that his new team members would be as interesting as his old team. Gotta remember to find that Jaunt kid, he's got some spunk in him. Simms walked up the room that SG23 had gone to after he missed them in the gym.

The room already had a few people sitting down when he walked in. "Talofa, everyone. Sgt Simms reported for duty."

Ryan Sketeches Sgt. Sims a quick Salute. "Welcome to the team Mr. Simms. We were just about to sit down and run through some tactical and mental exercises to guage the team's abilities at problem solving and reacting under stress."

He frowns. "Though I am still waiting for Brayden to arrive. he nods to Samuel and Kyria. "These are your teammates, Specialist Samuel Lawrence and Specialist Kyria Donnighal."

"You missed the sparring and obstacle course runs but there's always tomorrow."

Predictably Samuel led the team in all categories except tactical analysis in the mental tests, followed by Kyria. Ryan led in tactics followed by Sims, but there was mostly due to their military training.

Curiously Brayden never did show up, which irked Hawke, but he assumed there was a good reason for it. if nothing else it easily decided who got extra duty for the week.

He laid a hand on Samuel's shoulder.

"Ok I give up. you got me here in the tech department. Color me impressed. With some more training I think we've got one hell of a good little squad here."

He does his best to show his pride in the performance of the team, it was better than he'd hoped.

Samuel was actually disappointed when the tests were over... he wanted them to continue so he could keep showing the others up.

But his 'godhood' couldn't last forever... oh well.

Samuel smile at Hawke's statement, and replied in a non-chalant tone, "That's ok, sir, I've got 99% or more of the population of this planet in the tech department. You know, give me a few months and we might be able to updrade that from this world to this galaxy... and in a few years, this universe... It might take a couple of decades to get all the way up to all the universes, and I don't know how we'd test that, but I'll work on it, ok sir?" He finished with a smile, leaving it open as to whether he was making hyperbole or was being serious... you just never know with some people.

Of course, his mind was already processing how to make that a reality...
