Aberrant: Stargate Universe - The Briefing Room

The two weeks passed and for some it was a welcome vacation, for others it was an ordeal of getting accustomed to strange surroundings and strange abilities. The time did end however. General O'Neill called for a briefing in the main briefing room on level 27 for 08:00 hours. This room usually housed only a handful of people at a time, but this morning folding chairs had been brought in to accommodate all of the new Specialists. The shades were up allowing a view from the briefing room down into the gateroom looking down at the massive Stargate from an angle slightly above it. It was a reminder to everyone that this was real and their presence was important.

Once everyone was seated the door to the General's office opened and General O'Niell, Major Carter Daniel Jackson and Teal'c filed in. O'Niell took his place at the head of the table and looked over the the gatered people while the other members of SG1 took the seats saved for them. "Thank you all for agreeing to join the SGC. We are here to protect the Earth and it's people and your service help to ensure that. After the recent attack by the NID over the artifact we are down nearly 3 full teams. We will not be assigning you to replace those teams, those slots will be filled by other candidates. Instead what I have in mind is to add at least three new teams to our roster and fill those teams with all of you. The new teams will be designated SG21, SG22, SG23, and SG24 further teams will be added as needed. Each of these teams will be designated as Exploration teams meaning you will be assigned to a wide variety of duties. Now, I'll let Major Carter explain the rest."

Carter stood up and took the floor as O'Niell sat down. It was apparent that he was not fond of long speeches being more man of action than talk. "Welcome to you all, it's been a pleasure getting to know you over these two weeks. We are very excited about the abilities you all possess and we hope they will allow us to accomplish things that were not possible before. To start out we will be sending you on what should be a relatively easy set of missions to worlds we have already visited to check up things. This should give to the chance to experience the Stargate and what being on a mission is like before we send you to places that are more dangerous. Of course we don't want you to take these worlds lightly they still have the potential to be very dangerous."

Carter picked up a remote and pressed a button and the AV equipment in the ceiling came on displaying a hooded figure with a face that was both glowing and blurry and unrecognizable. "This is the best image we have yet been able to procure of Annubis. He is the most dangerous of the remaining 'Goa'uld. He has recently suffered a terrible defeat in the skies over the planet Kelwona and lost his greatest weapon, however, he is still very dangerous. The other System Lords have banded against him, but even without his mothership and it's advanced weapons, he is still marching across the galaxy conquering world after world."

She clicked the remote again and another image appeared, "This is Ba'al, he is considered the second most dangerous Goa'uld." Carter continued the briefing going down the list of all the current threats to Earth and the major things that the teams should be aware of while off world. The list was long and the briefing seemed like it would go on forever. The threats and dangers were many it seamed.

After a time she came to another subject, "Let me talk to you briefly about your teams. Each team will have a Squad leader, and whether you are military personnel or civilian, you are expected to obey your squad leader's orders as if you were. The chain of command in each squad will be strictly followed. Another thing, your teams will be mixed with both men and women and I know that many of you do not come from a military background but you must understand that there can be no fraternizing within the team. If this becomes a problem for any of you, you can always request a transfer to another unit."

"Team assignments will be as follows: SG21 - Major Caine, Sgt. Declan, Specialist Jones and Specialist Jenning-Izuma. SG22 - Major Logan, Sgt Simms, Specialist Courier, and Specialist Jaunt. SG23 - Major Hawke, Lt. Walker, Specialist Wolfe, and Specialist Donnigal. SG24 - Captain Khudikias, Lt. Wright, Specialist Fischer, and Specialist Price. Others will be assigned to teams as needed."

Vinny listend with idle, yet attentive interest. A hard look was in his eyes. He didn't like this, he didn't like it one bit. So many civilians, former NID, and 'others' being assigned to SG teams after only a couple weeks was wrong, just plain wrong...

Abruptly Lt. Wright sat up stiffly in his chair, complete and utter amazement on his face.

"Captain Khudikias?" He looked at General O'Neil, astonished that this didn't somehow violate protocol.

Vinny said with a not-so-subtle, "you gotta be kiddin' me" tone and a body posture that screamed disbelief, "Sir?"

ChatBot: (Jaunt) rolls [Academics-Mythology] 5d10 and gets 5,4,8,2,3. 1 success, enough to remember Annubis is the name of an Egyptian god. He just doesn't remember what he was the god of, or other details.

Jaunt raised his hand. "Uh, I know I'm the new ki-, guy and all, but, mothership? Taking over the galaxy? I thought Annubis was an Egyptian god, I think..." He looked off to his right, verifying in his mind the facts as he knew them. "Oh, and uh... whats a Goo-Wald?"

Gwyn turns to Jaunt, "Anubis was the Eygptian God of the Dead, and had a jackals head I believe."

Turning back to Carter, "I think you might have to go back several stages for those of us who are new to the SGC. Presumably these 'Goa'uld' are an alien race that is hostile to Earth for some reason. What sort of weapons and equipment do they have? How good are their forces?"

Omar looks at the man who seemed to be protesting his assignement, and more particularly, that Omar was Middle Eastern. He didn't get angry, though. The only people who knew who he was were Kyria, General O'neill and the SG1 team. After the man got out of his system what he needed to, Omar would introduce himself to the others.

Samuel listened intently through the entire briefing. He seemed to pay as much attention to the info itself (and the possibility of where it came from) as to the content of the info.

After the teams were named off, a small cloud seemed to hover over him. He listened to all the questions before he decided to add his own. He raised his hand and waited to be acknowledged befor proceeding. "Sirs, ma'am, what about those of us who weren't assigned teams? What are we supposed to do?" He sounded a little down. He might just be an 'egghead' but he didn't like it when things were denied him.

Ryan listens and nods as the breifing continues. He'd been briefed on the Goa'uld and their capabilities, and even he was impressed. The tech was above current human level, but not insurmountable.

He looks around and does his best to acknowledge those who he'd been put on a team with and in command of. He'd have a more formal meet and greet later after the briefing if it was needed.

Dec sat quietly near the back of the room, a slight frown marring his brow as he listened. He had elected to keep his beard, though he had trimmed it neatly, and his hair was definitely longer than regulation length. But what the hell: he was practically a spec-ops trooper now. Being able to pass for a civilian was part of the job. The Delta guys he'd met in the past were all a little shaggy, able to pass as journalists or interpreters.

Of course, passing for civilian kinda meant being able to pass for normal too. And there was no chance of that. His cold metallic gaze saw to that. He'd smiled at one of the civilian medics as he sat down across from her in the Mess this morning and the woman had damn near run out of the room.

So this was what the SG program was? Fighting against aliens? He wasn't sure how he felt about that. War was war, and killing was killing, right? And should he be disturbed that some part of him was looking forward to it? Shit.

Abruptly he stood up; he realised how abruptly when the officers at the front of the room flinched. He looked at Major Carter, who to her credit managed to meet those silver eyes without shivering. Taking refuge in habit, Declan stood at-ease, staring straight ahead and not meeting anyone's eye, much to the command staff's relief.

"Sir. The sergeant would like to know if these teams are to be engaging in active combat situations. And if that is the case, are all personnel to be prepped and trained to a minimum level of combat-readiness, sir?" He fought the urge to shut up and sit down. "Because whether or not we all have special abilities, without group exercises we will be as dangerous to each other as to the enemy, sir." Now he sat down, his eyes dropping to the back of the seat in front of him. Not out of deference, but because he really couldn't take seeing what he called the 'freak' look from his commanding officers.

In the last two weeks Simms hadn't really spoken with any of the other personnel that returned from his last mission. Dealing with his new abilities had taken priority over that. So when Major Carter called off the assignments he was pleased to hear that he'd be teamed up with Major Logan once again. Being joined by two "specialists" seemed a bit unusal, and he didn't like it one bit, but orders were orders.

So looking around the room Simms tried to spot his other teammates. He spotted Specialist Jaunt when he stood up and asked about the Annubis guy. Great, just great. He does look much older than I did before I joined up. Is this kid going to be able to handle the rigors of combat? I sure hope so

After one of the other SGT spoke, Simms realized he had asked the same question he was just thinking about. His thoughts returned back to the briefing, and he waited on the Major's answer.

Taylor is clean shaven, and his attire is well kept. He looks almost like a model soldier, save that his posture isn't right. He's still slightly awkward.

Taylor sits quietly, paying close attention throughout the entirety of the presentation. He fidgets slightly. This is the first time he's been around such a large crowd in a while, and the rush of emotions is getting to be a bit much. He doesn't say anything or raise his hand. Not yet, anyway. He waits for the other questions to be answered.

The General cleared his throat and stood bringing everyone in the room to silence. He didn't look entirely please by the questions being tossed out.

"Lt. Wright, you have a problem with my decisions?" There was an edge to the General's voice that suggested there had better not be any problems.

"Specialist Jaunt, you and the others will all be given access to all the documents you need to familiarize yourselves with the current situation. For now understand that there are aliens that once pretended to be gods here on Earth in our ancient past. They were evil and enslaved our ancestors until they rebelled against the false gods and buried the Stargate. In the last several years we have rediscovered the use of the Stargate and started venturing out to other worlds. We have killed more than one of the false gods and begun to show those they've enslaved that they can be free."

At the table Teal'c raised one eyebrow and just said, "Indeed."

The General looked around at everyone present. "As for training. Yes, you will all receive basic training over the next couple of weeks, you will do this training with your assigned teams. These team assignements are not yet set in stone. We want to see how well you do together and after the training period we will reevaluate."

He looked at Specialist Lawrence, "Everyone will be working with a team during the training."

Major Carter cleared her throat, "Sorry. I accidentally read Lt. Walker's name twice. Looks like there was a typo in the notes. You will be assigned to SG23, Major Hawke's team."

Steve nods and listens attentively and makes a mental note to find out as much as he can about his fellows and this world they're supposed to visit.

Kyria stood up, her lack of military protocol obvious and probably intentional. "Hey, people! Saving the planet, remember? They're not gonna send you out there half-armed or half-trained. Everyone's got too much riding on it, and right now the people in this room are the best chance this planet has of making it through this war. So cool it. You're novas now and that means the more is going to be expected of you, including learning how to get along and work with other novas. And if you're worried about someone on your team, how 'bout offering them some help yourself, first?"

She nodded to Declan, "You're probably the best trainer for combat there is right now. I mean that. Best on the planet. So if you're worried about someone not being able to handle their own on a mission, offer to help them out." She swept her gaze over the room. "I'm sure we're all gonna get Goa'uld 101 before they chuck us through the Gate, so buck up, people. We all agreed to this. Grab your teammates, plan a bar-b-que or something, and get to know them before you start making assumptions and handing out issues."

She took a breath from her little tirade. "On that note...who was on my team again?"

Waiting a few seconds for the hubbub to die down,

"SG-21 will be meeting in the cafeteria thirty minutes after the briefing ends for some familiarization. I'll work out a training schedule from there. We are all going to get to know each other very well, no worries. Dress in fatigues for a basic workout. We will also be going to the range. That is all," he grins.

His tone was relaxed and his demeanor laid back, as if he was in no panic about the assignments and had the utmost confidence in his new team, which he did.

Woah, chicks here are hot. Jaunt thought to himself as he rest his foot on his knee and leaned into his chair, trying to relax during her rant (an look as cool as he possibly could, which for a dork like him, wasn't easy). He looked at his clip board; it had an overview of the subject material that would be reviewed today and it seemed loooooong.

With a sigh of resignation he look one more look at the girl, who seemed about his age, one more time and tried to look as invisible as he possibly could in case this room of mutants decided she was too feisty and needed to be eaten. Yeah, as uncool as that would be, he'd want no part of it, but knew he'd prolly die in an attempt to at least try and save her. Oh, yeah... you're so the hero dude. These people are nuts. I'm in a room full of people who can, and probably want to, kick my teeth in. Man, it's like I never left High School.

He flipped over the paper and snagged one of the $75,000 #2 pencils that he'd brought with him (it was the military after all), and began to scribble on the clear backing of the paper.

Skill roll - Arts - Making a sketch a Kyria

ChatBot: (Jaunt) rolls 8d10 and gets 8,5,10,2,6,9,9,1.

Re-Roll 10, Quality - ChatBot: (Jaunt) rolls 1d10 and gets 10.

Re-Roll 10, Quality - ChatBot: (Jaunt) rolls 1d10 and gets 7.

Total = 6 successes.

As the world moved on, time seemed to slow for Devin. Everyone, especially Kyria herself, was trapped upon the personal canvas in his mind and from his mind they were reborn upon his paper. With nothing more than the world's most expensive #2 pencil, Devin immortalized her and those nearby creating a perfect duplicate of the scene that took up ever corer of the paper. Of course Kyria seemed to be the center of his attention for this particular work there was no doubt that any face captured by his mind's eye could not be picked out of a line up with perfect clarity.

Major Carter looked both amused and a little alarmed by Kyria's lack of protocol. "Um, thank you. As Specialist Donnighal said, you will all be given Goa'uld 101, and be offered the opportunity to learn as much as you can about the challenges you will be facing out there before we send you. You will also be taught procedure. There is more to going offworld than just walking though a wormhole. Each time you go through the gate you will have to memorize an access code in order to be able to come home. We have a shield that engages any time someone accesses the gate from offworld. If you do not provide that access code before stepping back through the gate you will be atomized when you come in contact with the shield on this end of the wormhole." Carter smiled a satisfied smile at the looks that passed across everyone's faces as she said that last bit. It was good to see that they realized the seriousness of the situation.

"All of those 'little' details will be taught to you before we send you out. Despite how much there is to learn we will be sending you out on your first missions sooner than you might think. As was mentioned at the beginning of this briefing, we have chosen worlds to send you to that should be relatively safe compared to stepping into a completely unknown situation. For now, if you have any other questions apart from the things that will be covered during your training please feel free to ask them. Otherwise you will be meeting for class every morning from 08:00 to 12:00 hours each day until we feel you are ready."

Carter waited to see if anyone had further questions.

((Feel free to ask questions if you wish. My thought is that they will be giving classes to teach you everything you need to know. I won't actually go through all of that IC since that would take pages and pages of writing. If you have any questions about something you don't know OOC but should know IC please ask either here in this thread as if it were part of your morning class, or ask in the OOC thread and someone will answer. Otherwise we'll assume your character get's the IC clue on what they will face offworld.))

In Kyria's mind, Taylor mentally rolls his eyes. Was that really necessary? I mean, seriously. Everyone is already tense enough. Trust me. I'm sure your team will appreciate your energy later, but none of us need it right this second.

Taylor sighs outwardly, and his eyes linger over Jaunt just for a moment.

I'm assuming I don't have to roll for that.

(((OOC: Italics = Thoughts. So nobody needs to reply, except for maybe Kyria.)))

Vinny's body stiffened and through a clenched jaw, a forced, "No, sir." managed to eek its way out. He was pissed, his eyes showed it, his closed body posture showed it, and his grimace more than gave it away.

Damn aliens being put in charge, they've got abilities, why doesn't the General suspect that his mind is being fucked with? Who promotes an off-worlder a few weeks after meeting him! Why not just put Ba'al in charge of the whole damn SGC! This whole thing is totally FUBAR. He tries to fuck with me and I'll toast his ass, Captain or not.

Declan nodded as his concerns were addressed, looking a little uncomfortable (was he blushing?) at Kyria's statement regarding his combat prowess. He coughed slightly and managed a smile at her before standing and moving towards the exit.

"Major Caine? I'll go get ready and meet with everyone from SG21 in the Mess. See ya all in 20 or so."

With that he was gone.

He saw that the Leutenant was not happy with the decision. I will have to reassure them that I will act only for the benfit of earth.

Omar stood. "Excuse me general sir. But I would like to also notify SG-24 that we will be meeting in the gymnasium immediately following this meeting. Dress comfortably."

Ryan smiles, Kyria would be a good foil for him, he could already tell. Despite her disregard of protocol he was amused, and her argument made sense. The Marines had ingrained him with discipline, but real life had taught him that to stern a hand would screw things up everytime.

"SG23 will meet Thirty minutes after this meeting concludes in The Rec Room. Come prepared for a workout."

He looks back to General O'Neil and nods once, a show of respect and appreciation for the trust he was showing.

Olivia twisted around in her chair, looking at the assembled people. She knew who Caine was, but she was less sure about Specialist Jones and Sargent Declan. Jones wasn't leaping out at her - she hadn't had a chance to study everyone yet.

Wait, Declan was the silver-eyed man who was a poster child for Psychos Anonymous. Oh. This should be fun.
