Mutants & Masterminds: Harmony City - [Vixen] The Fox

"Magic foxes?" Dr. M said, a grin twitching his lips. He didn't laugh out loud, but Roxanne could see his humorous contempt for the idea dancing in his eyes. "I'll try to find a way to examine that theory. I mean, yes, magic is possible, so it's an option. But it takes years for magicians to master their craft and I understand that transformations are hard. Unless you think the fox is a magical creature?" He appears to take this more seriously. "David wasn't bitten by it." Roxanne felt her stomach twist; was he figuring it out? "Is that why you were healed first? The bite is more potent than whatever it did to David? That would explain your hair and eye change.

"Let's run some more scientific tests," Dr. M continued. He gave her a gleaming smile as he added, "That said, I think we could release you the day after tomorrow, baring no complications. You'll need to come back for the occassional check-up, but you can go home. Exciting, no?"

"Yeah. I'm looking forward to it."

It was the truth - not the whole truth. Yes, she was looking forward to getting out of the hospital if for no other reason than because next to no one enjoyed being there. But she was also looking forward to running down the street at top speed, learning how to dance, how to drive, how to skate and rollerblade. And also, how to fly - she was all but certain she could fly - and what limits there were on her powers, if any.

She was looking forward to going back home, too. Harmony City wasn't a bad place, but there was no place like a city built on solid silt to give you a reality check after magic foxes and the 'vibes of the Bermuda Triangle, dude.' Even after everything she'd seen, she still wasn't about to buy into that...

It was really too bad that the strange forces swirling around Roxanne had bought into her. That night, as the monitors and machines in the hospital hummed quietly along, Roxanne drifted into an uneasy sleep.

She awoke to a blinding light out of her hospital room, the rays of light piercing her sleep. Groggily, she went to the window, gazing out, expecting to see the vista of southern Harmony City-

It was Hell reborn, but with a whimper, not a bang. Buildings and people were twisted beyond recognition; Roxanne felt her gore rise as she realized that the twisted forms below were still alive, mewing inhuman protests from warped mouths and throats. The buildings no longer obeyed physics; one of them sagged around the middle like the woman choosen to close the opera, while another took a ninety degree turn at the twentieth floor without compromising structural stability. Twisted birds flew backwards, while a flock of pennies shot past the hospital window in a nine-coin Condor formation.

And to the south, far out to the sea, a column of pure light, as pitiless as the sun, rose from the waters. There were figures slowly resolving themselves from the light, walking in midair; humanoid, tall and slender, they walked in formation with glinting cresting helms and shining chestpieces. They carried no weapons, only slender sticks that had their own glows, from blood red to soft blue.

And before she saw their faces, Roxanne woke in her hospital room, safe from the dream. But something - her new powers maybe - assured her that it was not just a dream. It was something else, something new, and something horrible.

"Jesus - "

Roxanne rubbed her temples. She looked out the window at the normal-looking Harmony City that stood out there, and fidgeted.

Tomorrow she'd be discharged and on her way back home. She missed it already. But if it was true...

"It was just a dream."

Up here, it was just a dream. Inside, in the forest of her mind, it was more than that. It was the fizzle before the bang. The crackle in the air just before a storm.

She looked at her laptop. A leave of absence from work would be understandable - no one would question it after everything she'd went through. And deep down she couldn't bring herself to leave. Even if she was wrong, she had to be sure.

But she didn't have the faintest idea where to begin. It was all new to her. She needed help, that she was sure of. Where did you go to get help trying to avert a... 'vision' of sorts?

A memory flickered. She picked up the paper and flipped through it to a full-page ad.

"Hmm." She said.

"Hmmmmm..."
