Detailed Physical Description
</td></tr><tr valign="top"> <td> Sydney Holland is a somewhat ordinary looking caucasian man. At 31, his dark brown hair is flecked with just the few grey hairs. His grey eyes are encased in a light complexion, which tends to make his hair somewhat darker than it actually is. His face seems almost made-up in it's homogeneity, but most people believe that that's due to his preferred-look body, since his original appearance was quite blotchy.

A wiry figure before his eruption, Sydney's new body seems to be an embodiment of his preferred body. He now has a light build, with a little extra height. His holographic body included the clothes he was originally wearing during the explosion (see background), and as such, he is now perpetually in a brown suit, with white shirt, a bluish tie, and brown trousers, grey socks and black shoes, covered by his white, pristine lab-coat. Indeed, most people are fairly certain that Sydney's appearance will probably never age, and stay at this point in time.

In addition, Sydney's holographic body exudes a light glow, enough to be noticable in low light conditions. This glow tends to be coloured as he is (that is, predominantly white), but it has been noted during several occaisons to change tint slightly during periods of intense concentration, or heightened emotion.</td></tr></table></td><td width="25%"> <table width="100%" border="0"><tr valign="top" bgcolor="#000000"> <td >

<font color="#FFFFFF" size="4">Powers</font>
</td></tr><tr valign="top" > <td><font> Sydney's powers include his permanent intangibility (explained by his lack of a body, see the history below). He also has the capability to turn up his normally fairly low glow into a much brighter light, and even to blinding point. At this point in his development, he's also gained the capability to bend light outside of himself, to form both minor and highly complex holographic images.

Sydney also has fantastically acute vision, although at the detriment to pretty much every other sense (He no longer has the senses of Taste, Touch and Smell, and his Hearing is incredibly bad). On the plus side, he can see outside the visible spectrum, become a human microscope/telescope, and no longer needs to eat, breath or sleep. Due to his unique method for absorbing quantum (effectively using his entire body as a large node), he also has a heightened sensitivity to quantum energies around him. This same unique form of quantum absorbtion also means he's a beacon to anyone else attempting to sense him, unfortunately

In addition, Holland can also fire lasers of varying colours (usually from his finger, but this is more a focus than anything), control general illumination in a room, and diffract lasers into less dangerous light.</font></td></tr><tr valign="top"> <td ><font></b></font><font size="2" color="#000000"></font> </td></tr><tr valign="top" bgcolor="#000000"> <td >

<font color="#FFFFFF" size="4">Personality</font>
</td></tr><tr valign="top"> <td><font> Sydney's personality is somewhat typical of the standard professor in many ways. Many who had met him before his eruption told of an "aura of smart" around him, that he seemed to carry wherever he went. He tends to value knowledge, though not generally above that of human life (the explosion changed that.)

In general, Sydney loves the thrill of acquiring knowledge, and when he teaches, he strives to instill that same sense of wonder in his students. He often considers his job one of the greatest things in his life, and he is not keen to lose it (conversely, his job is not keen on losing him). However, one of the things that annoy Sydney is the fact that the vast majority of his students go to his lectures only to see a real-live nova.

Lately, however, Sydney has been feeling somewhat apart from the world he lives in. Due to his enforced observer state, his general state-of-mind has begun to change. Already, he's beginning to lose that mental construct of physical barriers, and tends to just walk thru walls instead of waiting for a door to open (why would he wait when he can't even knock). How much this continues is uncertain.</font></td></tr></table></td><td width="25%" align="center"> <table width="100%" border="0"><tr bgcolor="#000000"> <td colspan="2"valign="top">

</td></tr><tr align="center"> <td colspan="2" valign="top">
<font> Sydney, even before his eruption, was exceptionally intelligent. Sydney was one of those kids you see on the late-night news entering prestigious universities at age 5 (well, age 10, but it's still impressive, no?) Since he was a child, he always had the knack for the sciences. As he went through university, he began to float towards the physics, and from that, to Quantum Physics. Most university professors were deeply disturbed at exactly how well he did at this. It took him only a year and a half to race through his Science degree, and then another 3 years to race through the post-grad courses. Of course, considering Quantum physics was such a hugely counterintuitive field, this kept his mind busy for a looong time. He eventually gained his professorhood in Quantum Theory at age 19

When the Galatea exploded (this would be when he was around 19 or 20), he continued his studies, this time using the novas around him as inspiration as to how Quantum physics changed the world. Apart from this, his world remained fairly steady. As a general thing, Syd had no social life period, and no real desire for one either. The only thing close to a friend that he had (apart from the Quantum Physics professors he met and enjoyed conversation with) was indeed Alex McKenzie, a young student studying in a Science Degree.

Then, about 2006, he was doing some late-night work with the University's new Particle Accelerator (one of the small ones, courtesy of the wonders of the Nova age). Something must have gone awry (exactly what I don't know and don't particularly care) as the accelerator exploded in a huge blaze of glory. Thankfully, due to the late hour only a few people were caught in the explosion (which took out the Science block and a few other buildings as well. Of course, he erupted, but not even that was enough to save him. By all rights, his life should have ended there.

However, Sydney was not yet ready to die, and using his new abilities and all the ambient quantum in the air from the explosion, his quantum consciousness fashioned his current photonic body. This took him the greater part of two days and most of the quantum in the area, but had the benefit of draining most of the particularly horrid particles from the air, and this allowed rescue teams to actually find him.

Three years on, he still has his professorship (as well as a rather hefty payrise), and has employed Alex as his assistant. He lives a fairly sedentry life, content with being able to teach (something which improved with his eruption), and do his research. </font>
