Born of the Sun
by Matt Rossi

Introduction
Born of the Sun is an adventure for the Aberrant game, set in Boston in late August of 2008. It is designed for a group of 2 to 5 starting players (built on 30 nova points) as an introduction to the cutthroat intrigues roiling beneath the surface of the supposedly-ideal 'nova age.' It would be best if the PC's were all individualists, but members of Project Utopia, the Aberrant movement, or even the Teragen could be involved by playing on the idea of friendship. Alternatively, those with Directive affiliations might very well be assigned to investigate her death. The Theme of the adventure is Retribution, as the PC's attempt to expose an injustice and bring the guilty to light despite powerful forces opposing them.

Background

For the past three years, Marisa Wildmon has worked for Unseelie Technologies, a R&D firm outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Despite her lack of a functioning M-R Node, Marisa has spent years studying the physical effects of Quantum Energies on novas and is one of the top ten Paraphysicians in the world not working for Project Utopia. She had a lot of friends in the nova community, former clients and friends from college and friends of friends. Her tendency to forget that she's dealing with people who can command the fundamental forces of reality and to treat them like people put them at ease.

Before the start of this adventure, on August 17th, Marisa Wildmon died. So far the Boston PD has no evidence of any foul play...Marisa keeled over in the parking lot of Unseelie, and the Coroner's office has ruled it a stroke.

However, some of Marisa's friends suspect otherwise. They're right to do so; Marisa was killed because she stumbled upon a Project Proteus black contract to build a device that could amplify a nova's powers to the point that they consumed said nova from the inside out. At the moment of her death, David Venice (an ex-lover and a nova with a scientific bent and command over electromagnetic energies) was hastily trying to contact someone to go to Boston and extract her. He couldn't go himself because he's currently disembodied...a condition that requires him days to enter and days to leave. The players, if possible, would be a good choice for people he'd contact to go rescue 'Wildy'.

After Basilisk kills Marisa, David will become frantic. Unable to reintegrate his molecular structure for another three days, he'll beg the PC's to investigate (hopefully, if the players are friends of Marisa's or former patients, they'll want to find out who killed her.) and let him know if his suspicions are accurate.

Meanwhile, Marisa's death gave her supervisor (Wiarau Harmond, a Physicist specializing in Quantum Theory) time to have a mock-up of the Amplifier constructed. He's currently waiting to hand it off to his Proteus contact. Meanwhile, Basilisk is aware of Venice's interest in the case, and she wants to get her hands on the Amplifier ASAP. Unwilling to wait for Ozaki to authorize such an action, she has decided to take it from Harmond. She now waits for him to leave Unseelie Technologies with the device, upon which she will do to him what she did to Marisa (he knows too much anyway) and take it.

Such is the scene before the PC's arrive.

Unless Directive members assigned to investigate the death, the characters should have a reason to get invoved in Marisa's death. The easiest way to ensure this is to have David Venice get in touch with the players.

If that is the case, he'll do so via email or telephone. Unable to interact with the physical world, those are his only options at present.

Explaining his predicament, Venice will ask the players to go to Boston as soon as they can and check on Marisa Wildmon. (If it is possible to establish Wildmon as their Paraphysician before the fact, that would make it easier to establish a reason why they'd care.) He'll tell them what he knows about her situation at Unseelie Technologies, which isn't much. He'll even share with them the email he received from her and a few wild rumors he's managed to pick up about Proteus (see Rumors) and the reason for his concern. He'll freely admit he can't prove a damn thing about it. However, his worry should be made manifest; he desperately wants to get her out of there, but he simply can't do it himself, a horrible situation for someone to be in. If he has to, he'll beg the PC's to get involved. (It should also be kept in mind that, between his nova powers and his family fortune, having him feeling grateful towards them is not something the PC's should reject out of hand. This can be pointed out if they seem recalcitrant.)

Once the PC's agree to go to Boston, he'll gratefully make any travel and housing arrangements that are necessary and, of course, pay for everything. (If the PC group is already set in Boston, all the better.) Venice will tell the PC's about his and Wildmon's old meeting place, the F.A.O Schwartz near the Emerson Campus.
In the Air

When the PC's arrive in Boston, they'll soon discover that Wildmon won't be joining them; her death and the discovery of her body in the parking lot of Unseelie Technologies will be all over the local media, due in large part to Wildmon's semi-celebrity status as a doctor to novas. What happens next depends on what they do next; therefore, rather than give a direct storyline, the general information available shall be outlined.

The Boston PD will probably be willing to cooperate with almost any novas (based on the conception of Wildmon as a friend to novas), especially Directive or Project: Utopia ones, but they don't know much. Wildmon died the day before they arrived in Boston, at 4:52 PM as she stepped out of the office into the parking lot of Unseelie Technologies. There was no sign of fair play, and all signs point to her having died of a stroke. Novas with either medical knowledge and/or the proper powers might be able to detect contradictory signs (the presence of leftover Quantum energies in her brain tissues, the lack of evidence for any history of stroke in her medical history or in her body, postcognitive viewing in the parking lot to see what actually happened...a feat that should be at +4 difficulty due to the disturbance to the Quantum energies caused by Basilisk's powers.) or otherwise reveal the truth.

Novas who decide to take the direct approach and go to Unseelie Technologies will find the office in an uproar. Everyone they talk to (Marisa's secretary Jason Mewton, her fellow Paraphysicians and other scientists on the payroll) will be shocked at her death, but her direct supervisor (Wiaru Harmond) will not be available, having left for the lab outside of town in Sharon, Mass.

Going through Harmond's files (they're novas, they'll probably come up with dozens of ways to do it) will reveal design specifications for the "Quantum Feedback Projector." It's a very scary device, which creates an energy pulse inside a nova's M-R node. The pulse causes their powers to go out of control, causing possibly lethal side effects. (Consider the projector to have the Disimmunize power from Aberrant: Teragen page 127, with an intelligence of 2 and three dots of the power.) As of yet, according to Harmond's notes, no one has seen the design, but he mentions 'The Prototype' several times and at least once details the 'Sharon site' as the place he's been working on it. He very carefully *doesn't* mention Proteus or Utopia in these notes, presumably having learned from his mistake.

All of this will eventually lead the PC's to Sharon and the Unseelie Labs there. It is up to the gamemaster if he wants the PC's to have a run-in with Basilisk and Project Proteus at this point; it seems logical that Proteus would seek to prevent the PC's from finding out about the projector and what it does, but it may seem anticlimactic to have the main villain appear at this point. Perhaps Marissa Dunlop (from the Aberrant core rules, page 284) could be on retainer as well, in order to beef up Proteus' nova muscle

.The Enemy of My Enemy is My Enemy

Arriving in Sharon (a small town out on Route 95 half an hour from Boston) finding the Unseelie Lab is fairly simple; most of the town knows where it is, a few hundred yards from the MBTA Train Station on the edge of the town.

What happens when they arrive depends on how the story has progressed to date; if the PC's have already had a run-in with Basilisk and are on guard, if the GM has decided to hold off, if they spoke to the police first or just went straight to Unseelie, if they've read Harmond's notes or just want to speak to him and don't know about the Projector.

At any rate, Basilisk has run out of patience, and wants to cut all evidence linking herself and Proteus to the events so far. She'll want to use her powers subtly to kill him and sneak away unnoticed, but if the PC's are already on her trail she'll stage an ambush for them, hoping to use the projector to even the odds. If the PC's manage to save Harmond from her somehow, he'll be willing to tell them what little he knows about Proteus (which really begins and ends with Basilisk); she herself will not be willing to be taken alive, and will kill herself via an implant in her skull if at all possible.

In the end, the players will probably have more questions than they will answers; they'll have seen a bit of the corruption behind the scenes of Project Utopia, and will be left without truly knowing what is going on or how deep it goes. Venice will be heartbroken to hear about Wildmon's death and will seek revenge on Utopia and Proteus; he'll certainly pay well for any help.

Rumors

Venice doesn't know much about Proteus. What he does know is culled from oblique references to Utopia's black- bag operations on various OpNet sites, from news articles that didn't quite match up, and from using his powers to crack various Utopia machines. (When in Ghost form, he's practically imperceptible physically, allowing him to use computers he has no traceable connection to, avoiding the Utopia S&T division's attempts to trace him.) What he thinks he knows is as follows:

 1. Proteus is somehow symbiotically attached to Utopia, controlling and directing their operations.
 2. Proteus somehow controls or creates the world's Soma supply, perhaps through the Bahrain facility.
 3. Proteus intends to purge all novas and is designed for that purpose.
 4. The head of Proteus is Justin Laragione, also the head of Utopia itself.

Basilisk

Nothing much is known about the secretive assasin who calls herself 'Basilisk.' She has a faint German accent and tends to occasionally slip in conversation, using German words such as 'Herr' or elaborate rapid-fire obscenities. She's a nondescript woman in her late thirties, hovering between five foot four and six foot two in height and of variable build, eye and hair color. This is due to her ability to control what she looks like, becoming as plain as possible and projecting a low level field of inconsequentiality that convinces others she isn't important.

Basilisk tries to make it appear as if her victims died of natural causes, paralyzing them with her 'Basilisk's stare' before using her vampiric touch to drain the life out of them. (She's helped in this by the fact that her draining touch causes blood vessels to burst in her targets, resembling a stroke.)

After she kills Marisa, she'll begin to grow a bit paranoid about possible retribution from one of Wildmon's friends, leading her to steal the device she was originally sent to ensure the secrecy of.

Name:

Basilisk

Real Name:

Unknown

Nature:

Survivor

Allegiance:

Project Proteus

David James Venice, "Battery"

David, a child prodigy who earned his Masters degree in Physics when he was eighteen, understands the Quantum Power that flows through the nodes, and how it has changed each and every one of those so empowered. He knows that he wasn't immune, that his own obsessive love of computers and his work in the lab studying the Electromagnetic Spectrum as part of a paper on Unified Electroweak Theory, his desire to master the very spark of inspiration and genius has made him a living electromagnetic anomaly.

He and several of his friends all erupted at a party held for a friend of his, and Marisa Wildmon was their Paraphysician. Since then, she's become closer, sometimes a lover, sometimes just a friend. She's one of the most important people in Venice's life, and her loss will unhinge him.

David Venice is an EMP on legs. He's an electromagnet who can explain to you exactly how he's aligning the atoms of a metal desk with his power even as he throws the desk at you. He's a god now, a god of the electron, a modern-day Llyr of the Long Arm. He has an unusual taint-related condition; once every few months, he must become an incorporeal electromagnetic phantom and remain that way for several days. This has happened to him now, rendering him unable to look into his friend's death. He can still interface with computers, however.

In his spare time between working on his Doctorate and his job working to maintain (and even expand) his family's quite extensive fortune, David plays guitar for a band named Howling Heisenberg. He doesn't use his hands.

Name:

Battery

Real Name:

David James Venice

Nature:

Architect

Allegiance:

The Unlikely

Davey boy,

Love to love you, babe. Hey, 'member how we said if we were still single at 30 we'd hook up and do the wedlock thing? Well, if a big bad deity such as yourself still wants the most basest of baselines, then color me your bride. smile (And don't you know I know you hate the smiley!)

Working twenty hour days here...sleep! Feh! Sleep is for the weak! Caffeine is all I require! Marcus still hanging on? Saw him on the cover of Newsweek...some of you just *have* to erupt in public, don't you? Tell him I said hello.

Oh, and one more question; You ever heard the name 'Proteus?' I ask because one of my supervisors left a file on his desk askew (nosey, I know) and I saw that word and something about 'Quantum Feedback Projectors.' Does your superbrain tell you anything? I'm gonna do some digging in the meantime.

Gotta go. Love and wallowing,

Mar,

Get the hell out. Do it today, before they decide to come after you. I know you don't want to believe me, but these people are serious, and I don't know if I can protect you. I can only do so much, nova or not; they've got their own and these people are the makers of tombstones, as we used to say.

I am not f*&^!#g about, Wildy. Most of the gang aren't around, but I am sending some friends for you ASAP. (I'd come myself, but I'm pulling a Casper. God damn my timing.) Get to the place we used to meet, and I am not bullshitting you when I tell you to get up, and leave your office, right now.

David

PS: WHY ARE YOU STILL READING THIS!? GET THE F#(K OUT!

Herr O-,

I have 'pruned' the garden, as you specified.

However, a new problem. The weed in question had tendrils, strong ones, ones that are resistant to pesticide. In fact, it is safe to say these particular shoots may in fact have thorns that are capable of injuring me.

I would like to request some additional gardening equipment.

Perhaps even an additional groundskeeper or two. Nothing extreme; certainly not 'C' or his ilk. Just support staff.

The kind of equipment I'm requesting should be of the 'Zacheus' variety, as well as the device we were originally interested in. If we could strip the tendril's thorns, I could go about pruning with impunity, especially if the thorns were actually turned against the shoots.

I await your word,

Basilisk
