Chief Petty Officer Morgan Mallery, affectionately known as 'Bot' to some, and his brother Michael Mallery are the only two suvivors of the large Mallery family that occupied the Mars Olalla Orbiter up until the catastrophic failure of its positioning engine. The orbiter would have been lost altogether if not for the brother's quick thinking and fearless self-sacrifice.

Morgan lost an arm and Michael eventually lost both legs due to the injuries suffered when repairing the engine. With their family dead they volunteered their billets to the Melbourne mission, which was set to leave within the year, for the fresh start, promotion, and bonus which paid for their limb replacements.

The brothers' bond grew with the loss of their family. Used to the togetherness, both are dealing with the ache of separation and have thrown themselves into their work to help ease the pain of loneliness and grief.

Prior to the accident Morgan, the fifth son of an extended family well over 100, was a well respected Chief who kept the aging orbiter's systems going well beyond their expected lifetime.  He works hard and expects those under his watchful eye to do the same.  Criticism can come quick, however compliments are given when earned.

When not on duty, he's the first to 'power down' and swap stories and tell jokes.

Most recently, with the last of his bonus money, Morgan purchased a copy of the Jeeves software and had it installed in his arm.  He communicates with 'Cassandra' via a subdermal implant.  Ha makes a point of not talking too much while others are around for fear of appearing crazy though an odd sentence may be caught here or there.

Eyes: Blue-grey
Hair: Dark Auburn

Appearance: A fit and compactly muscled man in his thirties with strong, calloused hands and perpetually scruffy, friendly looks and a twinkle in his storm-coloured eyes. His dark brown hair has hints of red and faint traces of grey in it, and is cut in an unkempt, short style. Prefers rugged, comfortable, outdoorsy clothing, but when he has to dress-up, for professional events or the like, his clothing still seems rumpled, or slept-in. Since losing his family, an aura of melancholy lingers around Jack.

Personality: Jack is an affable, outgoing man with a dry, sarcastic sense of humour, that hides a varying contempt for elitist or those with an over-developed sense of entitlement. Having grown up and worked on the Lunar Colonies, Jack has a great fondness for the natural world and the wilderness. After losing his family, he feels he has nothing left on Luna or Earth and sees Tara as a place to start over, while giving the memories his wife and daughter some of what he had always wanted to give them. Also, due to time spent in an office/cubicle and the enclosed spaces of the typical lunar base, Jack doesn't like tight spaces.

Background: Jack was just old enough to remember moving from Denver when his family suffered an economic downturn and had to relocate to the Newcouver Lunar Base. But he always had a longing to go back. Growing up, wanting to learn about the planet humanity had come from, Jack gravitated towards earth sciences, specializing in geophysics.

He ended up being a Planetary Survey Analyst, but he found the work very dry and passionless. It was only when he went Earth-side to study geological formations and weather effects in person did he really feel alive. Whenever he was Earth-side, he scraped whatever extra time he could to explore and travel the world.

When management caught him using company time and resources for personal reasons, he was put on probation, curtailing anymore business trips Earth-side. But a new opportunity arose - an Earth-sider took note of his explorations and offered to pay him and associated expenses to guide him on a wilderness trek.

So, to his surprise, Jack became a wilderness guide to the wealthy and privileged on Earth, going on an extended leave of absence from his government job. Though hiding an irritation at the condescension and lack of appreciation for the planet they live from his clients, the new career offered him ample opportunity to travel the world on his clients' dime. It also payed better - if not enough to actually live on Earth, but enough that he could eventually and realistically save enough afford a small home there.

He met his future wife Alexandria - though she preferred Alex - on the Newcouver Lunar Base. They had crossed paths multiple times on the running tracks and climbing walls set up for the more active residents of the lunar base. Though cute, curvy, and fit, Jack had felt a little guilty looking at her, thinking Alex much too young for him. It turned out she just happened to look much younger than her twenty-three years, let alone his own twenty-nine. They laughed about it and got to know each other, learning among other things, Alex suffered from a minor case of EAC, and keeping fit helped her fight them symptoms. Alex had such a joie-de-vive despite her condition that Jack found himself soon falling in love with her.

Several months later, they moved in together, and a year after meeting, they got married. A year after that, they welcomed a darling and spritely girl, Samantha, into the family. Jack continued to work as a wilderness guide, though whenever he could finagle it, he brought his wife, and later, his daughter along. The time he took Alex Earth-side for her first time is one of his happiest memories, followed by the birth of his daughter.

For six years, life was pretty good, though at times, Alex worried about Jack's fidelity while he was Earth-side, with well-off girls and women who could afford the best biosculpting and cosmetic surgery who relied on him in the wilderness. She needn't have worried, Jack was always faithful. Any secretive actions on his part was due entirely to him trying his hardest to buy a small plot of land on Earth and the learning to skills to build his wife and daughter a house with his own hands. He wanted to surprise them.

Sam was six and Alex was considering a second child while her EAC ailment was starting to worsen when Jack was going to reveal his surprise - he had bought a piece of land and had already started on the foundations of a log-style home. Jack was in Venezuela, escorting a media executive, his trophy wife, his son, and spoiled daughter to Angel Falls, when he felt a terrible sense of wrongness...

Through a completely unexpected series of events, the Newcouver Lunar Base suffered a catastrophic collapse of its environment systems. Sections of the base were depressurized, others had their atmosphere/oxygen vented. The Newcouver Environmental Collapse was one of the biggest disasters in Lunar history.

Alex and Sam asphyxiated in their own home.

Jack was shattered, all joy in life fled with his family's lives. Living on a Lunar Base filled him with dread, but living on Earth without Alex and Sam felt empty without them to share it. Hearing about the Melbourne gave him a rope of climb out of the miasma of grief and depression that threatened to consume him.

If he couldn't bring himself to live on the Moon or Earth, he'd find somewhere else to continue on. And he'd bring the memories of his wife and daughter with him, and give them the hand-built home he hadn't had time to give them on Earth.

With his background in geophysics and planetary surveys along with outdoor skills, Jack was a good candidate for the Melbourne as an establishing colonist. His language skills would be another asset to help communicate among the colonists from the various factions, though his mental stability following the loss of his family was a concern.

Jack sold everything he had to assure a berth on the ship, along with the tools necessary to build a home. Beyond that, he only took the battered, hand-crafted acoustic guitar Alex had given him one Christmas that he had never learned to play as well as he had intended, though still took it on most of his treks, and the remains of his wife and daughter - he had their ashes formed into blue diamonds that matched the eyes they had shared.

Perhaps, on Tara, Jack would find a place where he could find home, until he was ready to join Alex and Sam.

Theme Song, and This and This for Jack and how he feels.

Name : Talina Suzanne Mercer

Background: NAA/Space Station

Talina is the 15 year old daughter of James Mercer a botanist who volunteered himself and his family for the colonization project. She is not happy with leaving her home on the station she was born on but her arguments held little sway as she has been in constant trouble since becoming a teenager and the rest of the family, her mother, Janice, and brother, David. were very much in favor of the project. Resigned to her fate she has become somewhat withdrawn and antisocial.

Her parents are hopping that life on a new world will give their troubled daughter a new outlook on life

Before she became a recalcitrant teenager she was a bright and talented young girl who loved to write fiction and poetry and enjoyed singing, playing Guitar or Bass, and Dancing, basically music in general although her preference (and that of her "friends") was metal, and gothic hard rock. Her writing is pure fiction and usually morbid as is her poetry (think Poe and Lovecraft on modern drugs) and she bases her unfortunate characters loosely on whomever she is annoyed with at the moment. But she is actually fairly good at it for a 15 year old and could become a serious writer with the proper direction. What she wrote she posted on the net in her anonymous blog. Her last posts before going into cold sleep was a really horrid tale about a colony ship getting lost in space and everyone waking up somewhere deep in space. It contained graphic violence, murder, cannibalism, even more unsavory things before everyone died. It received 41+ million likes before the Melbourne left on its voyage.

Personal Information

Name: Dr. Polina Temnikova, M.D., PhD
Series: Tara

Echelon: Veteran

Marital Status: Single

Relatives: Nikolai Temnikova (Father), Katja Temnikova (Mother)
Date of Birth: June 24th, 2120 (Cancer)
Citizenship: Unionem Europaeam
Home Region: Saint Petersburg, Russia
Occupation: Medical Doctor; Pathologist; Pharmacologist; Biochemist; Evolutionary Developmental Biologist; Xenobiologist; Botanist/Xenobotanist;

Physical Traits

Gender: Female
Ethnic Background: Caucasian (Russian)
Age: 37

Apparent Age: Early to Mid-Thirties
Height: 1.65 m (5'5")
Weight: 60 kg (132 lbs)

Eyes: Brown
Hair: Platinum blonde
Handedness: Right

Appearance: Polina is slender and quite attractive woman with a lean, toned build and short, platinum blonde hair. She usually wears slacks and a blouse topped off with a white lab coat and a stethoscope around the back of her neck. Her calm, brown eyes observe the world around her, often giving the impression that she is in cold calculation. She did pick up the habit of smoking and often talks with a cigarette in the corner of her mouth. Curiously though, she tends to just hold the cigarette between her fingers or in the corner of her mouth only taking a quite infrequent drag.

Personality: Dr.Temnikova is somewhat quiet most of the time usually, deep in thought or simply observing people and her surroundings, but she has no problem stating her opinion when she feels it is warranted. This changes with some sparks her interest or she as a flash of insight or inspiration. She has an occasionally dark sense of humor and is quite forward. She tends to be rather blunt (even by Russian standards). This is often misconstrued by some as her being cold or even mean. The truth is that she simply sees little need for pleasantries most of the time when there is a problem that needs fixed. Those that get to know her come to understand this and realize that the fact she is spending her time and effort on somebody or something is how she shows she cares.

Background: Born to a reasonably well off family of academics in Saint Petersburg, Russia in 2120, Polina was a wunderkind, especially when it came to medicine and life sciences. She raced through school and into higher education, blossoming into a beautiful, young woman while earning multiple PhDs by the age 25. She then spent the next several years working for the UE studying, among other things, EAC on various UE stations.

Though her parents and others were often impressed with her accomplishments, Polina was never satisfied, so when she heard of the colonization effort, she jumped at the chance. On Tara she could explore and further the boundaries of science, challenging herself and blazing a path through scientific history. Rarely is does such a scientific opportunity present itself, and she was determined to take every advantage of it. She began voraciously studying every bit of data she could find on Tara, especially the flora and fauna, looking forward to the day of her arrival.

On the other hand, she was not overly pleased about being informed that she would serve as Medical Doctor in exchange for spot on the crew, but it was something she grudgingly conceded to for a spot on the Melbourne. Though a fully capable M.D. and skilled pharmacologist and pathologist, her colleagues at the city hospital where she completed her residency were less than impressed with her bedside manner (or lack thereof). She had a blunt demeanor toward patients and tendency to treat the injury or affliction like it was a simple problem to be solved, preferring her time in the lab or field to that spent at a patient's bedside.

Dr. Temnikova's medical 'care' would be something the colonists would have to get used to...

Nation: The North American Alliance

Location of Origin: The Moon

Education: Jaime holds a Bachelors in Science (Plant Biology Major - Olympus University), and a Bachelor's in Fine Arts (Olympus Culinary Institute).

His flaws include tunnel-vision sometimes when it comes to his work, and a definite degree of perfectionism. A classic artist.
