Doctor Northlight

Rachael Joyner

,,

Rachael Joyner had a routine life. Rich parents who made their money in the financial world, and she was a brighter than average youngster. While born in America, she spent a lot of her childhood traveling the world, taking in a cosmopolitan view of people that her parents wished her to take. Eventually, she proved herself to be able to go to any school she wished with the grades she sported, her efforts were not lost on the faculty of MIT.

She would have went in on a full-ride scholarship, until her parent's deaths when a Somali pirate raid on her parent's yacht changed things. It was rounding the horn of Africa to head for Quatar was attacked and the parents foolishly put up a fight. After a time of mourning, Rachael took her funds and funded her own education in her parent's name. Going so far as to thank her parents in her Valedictorian speech on graduating High School.

She started University at MIT, and took to her studies with focused effort, eventually earning a summer internship two years ago to help researchers at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. That would lead to the next great moment in her life. She was helping a researcher fix a sensor on one of the massive collider sensors located at one of several points on the collider's ring, when somehow the collider went online. No warning alarms went off until moments before a collision happened with a open sensor. There wasn't time to evacuate.

When Rachael came to in the hospital, she was the only survivor. Everyone else received a fatal dose of radiation or had their bodies half-disintegrated from the energy of the collision. But Rachael was lucky... she was only exposed to before then unknown particles. For a moment they saw her bathed in a white glow that produced no heat for several minutes while she laid unconscious.

When blood work came back they discovered her genetic code was heavily re-written, as if she spontaneously evolved, as well her EKG showed tripled activity when she focused on tasks. That, and things she had to take a moment to remember were old hat to her.

Returning to MIT the next Fall, she began to show she was indeed on a fast-track for getting her Bachelor's Degree in Physics and a shoe-in for a doctorate in Quantum Physics or even becoming a Professor.

Once she graduated though, she decided not to pursue her education further. What no one knew was for 3 months she had been using her money to put together a lab at a warehouse owned by her parents at one time. Under everyone's nose. There she had began designing what she considered the future.

She knew science had to serve the people, and she saw the state of the world as unacceptable. People suffered under violence and greed, some perpetrated by the ignorant, and others with the very science she researched. She had built herself a suit that could, while looking more like a fancy retro-spacesuit, could withstand the greatest depths of the sea or the farthest cold black of space, a gravitic flight system that could also propel her under the sea at unheard of speed, and a blaster that could as easily crumple a person with nausea or blast them with focused quantum-level energy.

She thought she was the only one. She should remember it's a big world, and a big universe...

I have a sketch for this character, but it isn't saved online anywhere and I can't just upload it here. In any case here is the background;

,,

Gatekeeper

Dumisani Rivers lived a generally normal life if not a particularly prosperous one. His mother Eshe was an immigrant from the Congo who married into citizenship. His father, Caleb Rivers, was a mailman and supported his family for years through such work. Dumisani’s life until highschool was unremarkable save for his predilection towards visual artistry. He would draw on whatever he could find, more or less wallpapering his room with sketches and such. He went to college with the expectation of using his skill in the arts to get into graphic design for webpages and software display, though this was likely due to a need to secure a decent living wage.

Shy and softspoken by nature, he was never very social at school, and made few friends despite his genuinely decent looks. A fact his boisterous younger sister Aisha has tried on numerous occasions to correct by shoehorning him into elaborate (Machiavellian some might say) dating schemes with her friends. It was on such a date during his first year of college that his powers first manifested. He’d been conned into attending a rave with one of Aisha’s friends who enjoyed the night scene. The plan was, since most of the people at raves were too high to pay much attention to anyone else, nobody would notice that Dumisani could not dance (and maybe if he were completely blitzed by this girl’s ample endowments he would be too distracted to care!). And so, he was sent off by his sister with a vague warning to “be gentle” with her friend, armed with nothing but his shy-guy smile and total lack of savvy. All would have been well if this particular rave had not been the chosen site to test an aerosolized new street drug called “warp” which distorted the user’s (victim’s) perceptions to cause them to perceive spatial relations strangely.

The instant the effects began to mount upon him Dumisani knew something was wrong. It began as a mild headache, then a sense of vertigo. His date for the evening had already sat down with a drink to “get her head straight” and some of the other patrons were stumbling around with dizziness. At some point in the midst of this, the concepts of “far” and “near” seemed to break down for Dumisani and he was forced to stand stock still and struggle to concentrate on where exactly he was. The sudden raid by the police didn’t help matters, with the loud music, panicked ravers, and flashing laser lights, his senses were quite overloaded. When he grabbed his date and the world seemed to spin out of existence, he thought he was merely passing out and expected to wake up in a jail cell. When he and his date woke up in an alley on the other side of town, he was confused indeed. The adventure of returning to his car can be told in its own place, suffice it to say that one very displeased mugger found himself far, far out of his comfort zone (out of the city in fact), and Dumisani was grateful his date was too exhausted to be observant.

It didn’t take him long after his head cleared to realize that he had been altered by that night’s experiences. Being fairly clever, he carefully sifted through the media for any sign of someone else developing strange new abilities after that incident, and finding no such evidence concluded that it wasn’t the drug. The next few months (working around his classes of course) he spent experimenting with his new ability to reshape the medium of space with his mind. He even decided to minor in physics to give him a greater understanding of just what the hell he was doing. With the advent of superheroes in the world, a fact that was covered by the worldwide media, he knew it would not take long before someone (probably his sister) figured out he had power and spread it all over the net. He wanted to be either controlled enough to keep his ability under wraps, or good enough to be able to flee the scene. It was while he was out practicing that his father was killed in a bombing at the post office…

Investigations into the bombing revealed the incident to be caused by extremists retaliating against the government shutdown of 2013. While most of the perpetrators were captured and sentenced, a few still remain at large. A memorial service was held for the victims (those few who still had their jobs and decided to work overtime that day) and a small stipend of benefits was paid to family survivors. On the brink of graduation, Dumisani was suddenly left with the responsibility of supporting the rest of his family since his mother was only making minimum wage and his sister was in college and accruing her own debt. In between various contracted web-design jobs he got the idea to use his power to try and bring additional funds to the table in the form of metahuman public service or criminal bounty-hunting. Unfortunately, while he is willing to help out people in trouble, altruism is not very profitable; and bounty hunting requires both licenses and exposure to law enforcement that will create a paper trail back to his family. At present, he is left in his state of indecision.

Spatial manipulation* ( +Precise & Ranged extras) rank 10 [40 pts]

*The basic technique of this macro-power is actually just plain teleport. All the alternate powers below refer to the cost above.

(alt = alternate, D-alt = dynamic alternate)

Alt 1; Combat Teleport (Teleport + precise + turnabout)

Alt 2; Apport (Teleport + increased mass + affect others)

D-Alt 1; “Distance Distortion” (Snare + Area: burst) he would explain this as taking the "distance" out of the speed equation, which renders people immobile or very very slow.

D-Alt 2; Blink Teleport (Teleport + reaction) rank 8

Alt 3; Warp Gate (Teleport + portal)

D-Alt 3; Redirecting Warp (Deflect, redirect, reflect as per Power Profile)

D-Alt 4; “Spatial Burst” (Damage, ranged + Indirect 4) essentially small localized shockwave of cascading dimensional stress damage, he couldn’t BEGIN to explain what it is, but he knows how to use it.

D-Alt 5; “Spatial Shockwave” (Damage, ranged +Area: burst 2) visually this looks like Demi from Final Fantasy X, and attacks using spatial shearing.

Alt 4; “Transposition” (Teleport + Apport, ranged) rank 8 this switches either his and the target’s position or 2 target’s positions, and I’m surprised they didn’t include it as a normal power.

D-Alt 6; “Distance Contraction” (Speed + affects others + area) multiply distance in the speed equation to cover more ground in the same amount of time.

,,

Utility Powers: (these come straight out of the power profile books, which are actually very convenient)

Portal platform 7

Pocket Dimension 3

Dimensional Perspective: Visual

Teleport and Dimension senses

Immunity: Dimension powers & Teleport effects

I'd post the rest of his stats but they may change with this extra mass of power points.

Secret identity

Renata keeps her face and name hidden when crime fighting, not just to protect her family but to protect herself from her family's reaction to her unsanctioned activities. Her father in particular would be livid, as the press would have a field day with it.

,,

Meet the Buttinskies

Renata's parents are real pains sometimes. Dad's not so bad most of the time, but on the campaign everyone is expected to help out. This can mean putting in some hours at the HQ, or even sometimes doing interviews or otherwise plugging for him. Since her father's running on the GOP ticket, Ren tries to find excuses to limit her involvement...but she can only do so much. Her mother on the other hand is Catholic and still tries to get Renata to do the girly stuff like shopping and shoes and relationships. She can always be relied on for a veiled jab about grandkids, or why or why not men will want to go out with her and what she should do to fix it.

,,

Bad temper

Renata is a bit of a pressure cooker, and is prone to emotional flareups, especially when under pressure. Before, this was merely inconvenient. With TK involved, it can be dangerous.

,,

Motivation: Express/prove self.

Trying to get away from the pervasive feeling that her life's been mapped out for her by a clever, but manipulative dad, using her mom as a sort of 'goalie' to keep her in bounds, Renata lives a secret life because she wants to prove that she CAN live a life without the overbearing presence of her family. It's not just crime she's fighting, it's all the people in her life who've held her back...including herself

.

Background

Renata Hodges is the only daughter of the Republican Senator Thomas Hodges, serving his freshman term and already considered an 'up and comer' in Washington politics. His wife, Isabelle Hodges is heir to a wealthy family; they met at a fundraiser when he was just getting into the game while in college. Ren has two older brothers and one younger.

Growing up, Renata was very close to her brothers and liked the same kinds of things they did, by and large. However, Isabelle had a different set of expectations for her, and wanted Renata to emulate her in dress and behavior. As they got older, her brothers didn't want their little sister hanging around anymore, but she still didn't feel like she had much in common with her mother or the other neighborhood girls she was allowed to play with.

Through middle school and high school, Renata had the usual social ups and downs...never really a 'popular' girl, but not an excluded outsider either. Her experiments with having a boyfriend didn't end well, but when does it ever at that age? In high school however, she shocked herself by getting a girlfriend and realizing the difference that made. Unfortunately that relationship was also doomed, but Ren had learned something about herself that forced her to reinvent herself entirely.

For a long time, Renata had resented her father's political life; both for how often it took him away, and for how it seemed to contaminate everything he did or said. Repelled by her perception of his insincerity, and eager to gain more self-direction, she began to pursue a career as a policewoman. The moment her father found out, however, he quashed those ambitions; making it clear that he wasn't going to risk her that way, and that he'd use whatever influence he had to make sure it didn't happen.

Still struggling with the personal revelations that she was keeping to herself, Renata didn't take this intrusion well. Feeling powerless to affect her life, she drifted without goals. Her grades dropped and she withdrew from her social circles. A chance encounter where she put some of the training she'd undertaken to use in stopping an attack on campus changed that though. The dissonance between who she was expected to be, and who she wanted to be was too great for just one person. So she would become two people.

Renata redirected her studies into athletics programs and health and fitness, with the stated goal of becoming a physical trainer and therapist. Her father, though disappointed she wasn't interested in law or politics, could live with that. However, she began to prowl the campus after dark in disguise to engage in her dangerous game of vigilantism. On some level she was aware it wasn't about 'justice' or 'doing good,' but rather about asserting her independence and working out angst...but if that could be harnessed to admirable ends, wasn't that a good thing?

Of course, good things never last. It was only a matter of time before Renata learned a hard lesson in why there are so few vigilantes. What looked like a date rape in progress was really an armed assault, and there were others nearby as well. In short order she was outnumbered and outgunned, and it was going from worse to incredibly bad when...once again...everything changed for her.

It's hard to say when her powers first awoke. For a time they were weak and subconscious...she wasn't aware that the object just out of reach slid into her grasp, or that the door blowing open just as she reached it with her arms full wasn't because of a natural gust of wind. Small mysteries that, like most people, she never paused to question.

Now though, powered by raw terror and fury, that groggy awakening became full fledged. The sleepy grumble became a dragon's roar. If she'd been as strong then as she has become, this would be a much grimmer story...but as it was, she only knocked two out and the other managed to flee. He was apprehended the next day based on his description.

After keeping her head down for awhile, Renata decided that this was too big not to pursue. She had no answers about these powers; didn't even have good questions...but she knew what they could do, and what she could do with them. Chasing down purse-snatchers and busting overzealous fratboys was over now. This was an opportunity not just to do something important, but to BE something important.

And this time dad couldn't swoop in and steal it from her.

BACKGROUND
Isabel 'Izzy' Sterling was born March 29th, 1985 into a well-respected family that has been part of Her Majesty's Government for over a century, mostly in the Colonial and Foreign Offices (now combined into the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, or FCO). Izzy spent much of her childhood living with her family in India and Pakistan, where she developed an interest in Asian languages. While she attended International schools in Islamabad and New Delhi for her primary education, there was never any doubt that she would return to England for university.

It was while she was at Cambridge majoring in Politics and International Studies that she was recruited by the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6); the excitement of espionage work intrigued her, and she knew her knowledge of South Asia would prove invaluable in the field. After she completed her studies, she was assigned a cover position as a translator at the British Trade and Investment Office in Lahore, which gave her many opportunities to gather intel on Pakistani business leaders possibly supporting anti-Western interests. She never revealed her undercover status to any of her coworkers, and was very popular among her peers.

Then one day in 2011, the BTIO delegation was stopped on the road near Peshawar; all occupants were dragged out of their vehicles, beaten and thrown into trucks that made for the Afghan border. Once there, their captors delivered them to a heavily-armed camp where a huge Russian mercenary brutally questioned them all in turn. Isabel soon figured out that she was the prize he was looking for, and she offered to provide him with information as long as he let the others go free. The Russian, who his followers called 'the Black Dragon', gleefully agreed and then turned his full attention to Isabel...

This began a harrowing ordeal that lasted two weeks; the young agent was given numerous drug injections, forced to go for days without food, sleep or water and subjected to a barrage of questions that didn't make any sense. Snakes were randomly thrown into her cell at night by her laughing guards, biting her again and again, leaving dark purple wounds on her arms and legs. Finally Isabel became feverish and collapsed into unconsciousness.

When she at last woke up, her mind was clear for the first time in days; the bites on her arms and legs had faded and an odd warmth spread throughout her whole body. Somehow she knew she was different, changed. Isabel walked up to the bars of her cage, took a deep breath, and squeezed right through.

Several days later, she showed up out of the blue at the High Commission in Islamabad, stunning the Diplomatic Service who assumed she was dead. The full details of her capture and escape were never revealed to the press, but since her security clearance was in tatters, SIS was forced to let her go.

New York awaits...

,,

COMPLICATIONS

Motivation: Patriotism- Isabel comes from a long line of British civil servants, going well back into the Colonial era; she's not naïve enough to think that the UK and Commonwealth of Nations are perfect, but she does think its values are worth defending.

,,

Pop Culture Illiterate- Growing up in the world of diplomacy and international travel, Izzy didn't have a lot of time to go to the cinema or watch the telly; besides books were far more interesting and portable. Because of this, she doesn't always get the jokes and references of more media-savvy individuals.

,,

Enemy- Arkady Ilyich Dragomirov, aka 'The Black Dragon', a former member of the Spetsnaz GRU, now a metahuman soldier-for-hire operating in South and Central Asia. It was Dragomirov's men who captured Izzy and her team in Afghanistan, and it was during her captivity and mistreatment that her abilities first emerged, allowing her to escape. She has vowed to see him brought to justice.

,,

PTSD- Isabel still has a lot of unpleasant memories of her captivity, leading to heightened vigilance, nervous tension and occasional nightmares. She's been seeing a therapist for over a year, but she still has a lot of work to do.

COMPLICATIONS

Family: John’s family has always been less than fortunate. He’ll do anything he can to help them out. Starting with sending part of every paycheck he makes home to mom.

The Pledge: John’s a patriot; A true patriot. He loves his country, and he’ll be damned before he lets anyone bring ill upon the good old U S of A, or badmouth the home that he loves.

City Boy: John’s a city boy; an inner city boy. He was raised around guns, drugs, and gang violence. The military was his chance to get out. But every once in a while, some of the things he sees will hit a little too close to home.

Just Don’t See The Point in Drinking: What do you get for the man who has everything? For the boy who enlisted in the armed forces at a young age, and traveled overseas; John’s been hunted by enemy insurgents, killed men in battle and nearly been killed himself. After a man like that returns to his beloved country and discovers he can’t share a beer with his father for another two years he starts to wonder what the point of it is. After having been through so much in his life without having a single alcoholic drink, John never saw the point in becoming a drinker. To this day, he won’t touch the stuff. It may be a healthy, frugal decision, but it is bound to create some awkward situations…

,,

BACKGROUND: Just the basics:

John is Hispanic. His family was large; he’s one of 5 kids. He’s not the youngest, nor the oldest. He’s the one somewhere in the middle. He’s the forgettable one. It’s no wonder that his parents forgot he existed for the most part. After all, they both worked two jobs just to support their kids. He never really wanted for anything as a kid, save for maybe a little attention. He was used to being the overlooked one. That’s why, when the recruiters came to his school, he enlisted as soon as he could. The Navy would be a fine place for a man like you, John. Steven, the recruiter, had been the first person to really pay attention to him in, well; John couldn’t remember how long it’d been.

In the navy, he wasn’t just overlooked regardless of what he did. He soon found that what you get is what you make of yourself. The attention paid to you is based on your merit, based on you actions, based on what you did. And what John did was shine!

He was selected for the Seals at a young age. He served a full tour in Afghanistan. He got his tattoo, and now he’s out. Only there’s one problem. What now? What was left for him? He tried to enlist again, but the men at the local office told him they didn’t need anybody. They had plenty of younger volunteers, and it wasn’t necessarily even wartime anymore.

So, now john’s looking for the next big thing in his life…

,,

John’s powers awakened during his tour in Afghanistan. He was with a small troop of fellow soldiers. With him were Joel, their communications officer, Harry, the equipment officer, Robert, John’s Spotter. John was the squad’s sniper. The team was investigating reports of a squad of insurgents on the outskirts of a small town. Not finding any evidence of rebels in the town itself, the team decided to make for a nearby ridge on the opposite side of a shepherd’s herd of sheep. The team made their way through the herd and approached the ridge. About midway across the ridge John heard a high pitched whistling. His body reacted so quickly he could barely control himself. Joel was the closest to him. He tackled the man and they landed behind a large, lone rock jutting from the desert sands some distance from the ridge. No sooner were they prone behind cover, than the mortar shell detonated just to the other side of the rock. There was fire, a thunderous explosion, a wave of heat, and an incredible ringing in John’s ears. In the moments that followed, which all passed as if in slow motion for John, there was a great deal of death. The other two seals were incinerated; the herd of sheep, though not directly in the path of the explosion, all dropped dead due to the concussive force of the blast. Only John and Joel survived the blast.

John couldn’t hear for the terrible ringing, and he couldn’t see but for the red haze that had overcome his vision. He was only dimly aware of Joel shouting something into his radio as John rolled away from the rock formation. Olympic sprinters don’t run that quickly, and a Bat straight out of hell couldn’t match the speed with which John sprinted toward the nearby ridge. There was nothing but open ground between him and artillery emplacement on the nearby ridge. But it didn’t matter, John knew they’d be lucky if they could fire off another round before he closed the gap, given the speed at which he was running.

As his hearing returned, he heard the sounds of gunfire. When his vision cleared he could see muzzle flashes on the ridge, and he saw the tiny explosions of sand dogging his heels from the enemy bullets. But John was much too fast. Another explosion rocked the earth behind him, sending John flying through the air. Thankfully, it was far enough away so as not to be lethal, but john could feel something hot and wet dripping down the side of his head, and there was a hot pain in his left arm. John thought he’d be able to count himself lucky if he got out of this with only a concussion and a bit of shrapnel.

Then it hit him, a question that rocked his world: “Why?” He wondered, “Why am I doing this? Why am I running straight toward them?” As his legs carried him rapidly toward the mortar crew, he found his answer, “Because my country needs me.”

His adrenaline pumping like the NO2 through the engine of his friend Manuel’s tuned up Honda Civic from back home, John scaled the ridge in seconds flat. He knew he’d be too close to use his SRS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stealth_Recon_Scout_sniper_rifle) effectively. His sidearm would have to do. His eyes rapidly identified 5 contacts. The closest had run to meet him at the crest of the ridge, two were on the lookout for more American soldiers, and two more were readying yet another Mortar shell.

John flexed the muscles in his left hand so his fingers were hard and dagger-like, then jabbed the tips of his fingers the man’s trachea. He simultaneously pulled the pin from a grenade hanging from the man’s belt. He then gave him a good swift kick in the chest and the man stumbled into the two men manning the Mortar. That distraction and ensuing explosion gave John the precious seconds he needed to draw his pistol and take two shots. Both found their mark between the eyes of the remaining men who’d killed his fellow soldiers.

Once the excitement was over, John drew his rifle and aimed at the rock he’d taken cover behind. Through the scope he could see Joel waving to him. “At least Joel will be getting out of this unharmed,” He thought…

John met his friend down by the rock. After the two made sure there was no more danger, John seized his Entrenching Tool and took a swing at the rock that had saved their lives. Part of it jutted away from the rest, and it was a strange color. John didn’t remember the piece of grey rock being there before the explosion, but then, maybe the mortar fire had chipped away some of the rock and revealed it. “What are you doing?” Joel asked him, “I want a piece of the rock that saved our lives,” He gave Joel a grim smile and swung the sharpened shovel.

Despite a week in the field hospital and some minor surgery to remove the shrapnel, John never let go of that rock. He’d gotten a good piece. It was the size of a small melon, and flat along one side. They shipped him back to his family, even though he told them he’d rather stay and help the war effort.

Not long after John recovered from his injuries, he was sent home with a purple heart. Though Uncle Sam was nice enough to pay for his plane ticket home, he didn’t see fit to tell John what to do next with his life.

,,

Some time later…

,,

John returned home to his small apartment in Manhattan after a trip to the grocery store to find the alley-side window of his living room ajar. The ugly, dollar-store curtains he’d recently purchased were blowing in the autumn wind. His first thoughts were of a burglary, but after examining his apartment he only found one thing out of place. The rock, his trophy from the war, was missing from the glass case by his television. At first he panicked, but then he saw it sitting on the coffee table near the couch. Next to it lay a small steel band with a clasp on one side and a wristwatch face on the other. There was also a note scribbled on a small piece of paper which read, “This should help you to keep track of your time served. Just press the dial twice, quickly. And don’t forget to wind it every day. –Uncle S.”

Curious, John clasped the watch onto his left wrist, set the time with the dial. Then he clicked it twice, just as the paper said. The rock had been laying on the table with the flat side down. As soon as john clicked the dial the second time, four transparent surfaces shot out from the sides of the stone, the matched the navy blue hue of the stone; they were hard, smooth, flat, and transparent. When john reached out to investigate the changes to the stone more closely, it leaped from its place on the table and attached itself to the watch face with a soft click. The watch band extended to form a small gauntlet-like armband to support the weight and size of the rock. The whole assembly was now the size of a small, round shield. John clicked the button on the watch again. The gauntlet disappeared, as did the strange extensions navy blue sections extending from the rock, which neatly dropped to the table. “Huh…” John observed, otherwise at a loss for words.

Javier Duncan
Age: 33
Weight: 180lbs
Height: 6'1"
Hair: Black
Eyes: Green
Skin: Tan Caucasian/Light Hispanic
PL: 10

Complications:
Motivation: Doing Good: Javier Duncan has been raised knowing that he has to use his knowledge and abilities for the greater good. Now he knows he has special gifts, but that doesn't make him better, just different. He knows that he needs to use his newfound gifts for the betterment of mankind, not just himself.

Other: Responsibility: Javier has built his R&D company (White Nova) from the ground up. He's worked very hard for all the government contracts that he has, and if he doesn't keep up with them all his dreams will come tumbling down.

Other: Secret: If the DoD knew that Javier was a mutant, and what he was capable of, they might just feel the need to 'alter their arrangements', and it could spell the death of his company and dream.

-Full Background:

,,

Javier was born as the result of a brand new Irish immigrant falling in love with a Latino firecracker. His dad, a mechanic by trade and pursuing the American Dream like any good, new immigrant, set up shop in Car Town central, Detroit. Now, he didn't have much money, never did, but he had a wife to support, so he got the best apartment he could afford, but it was in the wrong part of town. With a child on the way, the only way he made it was pulling doubles at the local garage, which he could only do because his Latino wife was known in the community and vouched for him.

,,

Several years later, new son in tow, he finally made manager, and by the time Javier was in school, he had his own shop. By the time Javier knew the difference between a socket and a crescent wrench, he was working after school at his Dad's shop to help make ends meet. He was a very bright boy, and actual had a knack for the mechanical. He was one of the few to graduate from High School without a rap sheet, and of those, one of the few to go to college. He was the only one to get a full ride scholarship to Michigan State University.

,,

Javier was the best engineering student MSU had ever seen, but every year he applied to MIT. Whether because of his impeccable grades or the fact that they just got tired of dealing with him, they finally accepted him. While there he became personal friends with many of the engineering professors, and he finally graduated Valedictorian with a dual masters in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. While at school, he got an internship at a local R&D facility, and they offered him a job after he graduated. He took the position, and within just a couple of years had earned his way to project lead.

,,

Javier enjoyed his job, what he did, but he never forgot the fact that his dad had worked his way to his own shop; so he had always thought of owning your own business as the pinnacle of success. So Javier made sure to rub elbows every chance he got, and made sure that the people assigning the contracts knew not just his company, but his name. And he started saving. As much as he could, every chance that he could, because he knew that money would be the biggest single factor when it came to starting his own business.

,,

Then, two years ago, everything changed. Javier was late to work one day because his alarm clock vanished. When he was deep in the middle of a project, he never had to look to find anything, it was always right at hand. There were parts that they had only ordered one of, that once the project was assembled, they had a spare of. It took Javier a couple of weeks, but he finally figured out that he could create and destroy matter as a matter of will. It was after he had experimented in secret and discovered some boundaries of his new powers that he realized that this was exactly what he needed to start his own business. So he turned in his notice and called in some favors. He did the paperwork to start his own business, the White Nova Corporation, named in honor of his father's favorite car, but symbolized by a stylized 8 pointed white exploding star on a blue circle (he didn't want to go through the hassle of getting the rights to use the car image). He called in every favor, everybody that he knew, and everybody that might know of him. For all of his planning and saving, he was awarded with a single government contract. He used the initial funds to stock his 'laboratory', a converted spare room in his New York apartment. With his ability to create and destroy matter, Javier was able to 'fast prototype' both faster and better than any technology currently available. This allowed him to complete his contract with Uncle Sam faster, better, and cheaper than anybody else. That combination earned him his next set of contracts, and White Nova took off from there.

,,

But something was still missing. Javier was doing better and better, but the city he lived in was looking worse and worse than even where he grew up. Even with the slow but rapidly increasing number of vigilante 'heroes' that were using their powers to stop crime. Javier knew he had to do something, but he was finally living his dreams and didn't want to jeopardize that. So he built a suit. A suit that would allow him to get to the scene of a crime and away again, enhance his strength so that he could actually do something, protect him from harm should the 'bad guy' have different ideas, and, most importantly, hide his identity. The suit looks like a combination of Iron Man, a Jaeger, and Samus' suit.

,,

Since he's made his suit, he's been splitting his time between working on his contracts and fighting crime as an anonymous hero in a metallic suit.

Magnum Opus

,,

Aliases: Daniel Finn, Danielle Waters

Female; Age: 22; Height: 5' 10"; Weight: 124 lb.
Eyes: Green; Hair: Blonde

,,

Public Background: Two years ago, Magnum Opus made an impressive public debut at Occupy Wall Street, resisting arrest on behalf of an entire park and standing up to police brutality. The next day, the mysterious woman willingly went along, allowing herself to be arrested in exchange for the police leaving the rest of the park alone.

,,

Leaks of the subsequent interview and interrogation have been leaked, and described a genial young woman who refused to give her real name and argued that the crackdown on the protest was legally questionable. Upon learning that during her detention, the police had returned to make further arrests and break up the camp, she calmly stood up and walked out of the police station.

,,

In the subsequent year, Magnum Opus became something of a folk hero around town, able to lift a bus, withstand small arms fire with little more than bruising, and survive hostile environments. People found her engaged in everything from rescuing people from fires, to repairing broken-down buildings and infrastructure, to lending her profile to activist and protest movements. In all this time, she didn't have a costume, wearing anything from a thick hoodie to motorcycle leathers in her traditional red, white and black colors. Both the public and the authorities were divided on what to think of her.

,,

All this changed with Sandy - sometime shortly before the hurricane swept into town, Magnum Opus was seen tangling with a supervillain later identified as Xenith. She'd acquired a new costume and somehow, the ability to fly. After chasing off the villain, she set to ensuring that not a single person died in the wake of the hurricane.

,,

In the year since, public opinion has come around on Magnum Opus, even though her relationship with the authorities is still fraught. It's a little harder to spot tourists in New York City now, since it's a lot more common to look up in the sky.

,,
Full Background

Daniel Finn, a law student studying in New York in the fall of 2011, had several life-altering incidents happen to him in fairly short order.

,,

First, friction with his girlfriend Caroline combined with the stress of his courses and living in a strange city caused Daniel to realize that he was a transsexual; secondly, his best friend in the city, Conrad, had joined Occupy Wall Street and had picked a bad time to be protesting while black; and finally, and arguably most significantly, Daniel had a chance encounter with a theoretical physics experiment on campus that went awry.

,,

The experiment was attempting to find a way “out” of the universe and to look back in, attempting to verify several key theories about description physics, the notion that the universe is entirely made of holographic information. The experiment was not only a failure, but an explosive one, tearing a hole in the roof of the building – and Daniel had been up on the roof.

,,

Daniel did not die, however – and later, recalled a brief encounter with something that was Out There, that Daniel referred to as the Meta-Essence. Daniel felt a brief connection with the cosmos and came away changed, granted amazing new powers with a degree of wish fulfillment attached. Daniel had what he knew, deep down, that he wanted – a fully female body. Daniel awoke in a crater several miles away, surrounded by a strange sort of gel that seemed to react to him.

,,

Daniel contacted a shocked Caroline, borrowing some of her clothes. When word came that the police and the protestors were clashing, Daniel sped into action, arriving at the park just in time to see his best friend take a face full of pepper spray.

,,

Unsure of the extent of his powers but filled with a need to act, Daniel leapt into action, twisting guns into knots and ripping firehoses loose. The event made every news outlet in the world, covered from a dozen angles via cellphone camera, and earned the nascent superhuman a reputation as a populist and a rabble-rouser, standing up to an astonished police force. They retreated, and in the ensuing hours, Daniel had enough time to think, checking coverage of the incident as he was surrounded by grateful protestors, including her friend, Conrad.

,,

In the end, knowing that tensions would only rise, and having been granted an outside perspective at how frightening a superhuman against normal people could be, Daniel approached the police when they returned, telling them that if they arrested him and him alone, leaving the rest of the protestors alone, he would go quietly. They reluctantly complied, confining him to a cell they knew wouldn’t hold him. They had no identifying information for him on record, and Daniel, valuing his privacy, did not divulge any, only giving the police the name of the superhero he’d invented when younger.

,,

Daniel stayed there for several days, during which the federal government had also gotten involved. During this time, Daniel finally admitted to himself that what had happened was what he’d wanted to happen, and began thinking of herself as a she. Not long after, the police returned in force to break up the protest in the park, and once she heard of this, Danielle announced that due to the NYPD not upholding their end of the deal, she’d be leaving the station now.

,,

(It’s entirely possible that this incident is a major reason why superhumans are slow to trust the authorities.)

,,

In the ensuring year, Magnum Opus (as she had become known) became something of a folk hero in New York – Danielle had found her calling, devoting herself tirelessly to helping out in New York any way she could. She lacked a proper costume, performing rescues, fixing broken down infrastructure, and protecting protestors in everything from motorcycles leathers to a hoodie, though everyone knew her face and the distinctive colors she favored, along with the stylized “M” she wore as a belt buckle. Her relationship with the police remained complex. Able to disguise herself as a far more mundane-looking woman, she still only met with Caroline and Conrad sparingly, lacking any kind of legally separate identity.

,,

This changed when Special Agent Simon Chalk of what he claimed was the DHS contacted her, looking for her help. Several superhumans had turned up dead, with super-hearts and x-ray eyes surgically removed, and Chalk wanted Danielle’s assistance putting a stop to it.

As Hurricane Sandy rolled into town, both Chalk and Danielle tracked down the killer, the evidence pointing to a man obsessed with turning himself into a superhuman by any means necessary. They tracked this superhuman’s activities to a dockside warehouse under ownership by a rich stockbroker named Brian Xander, who had watched a superhuman stand up to an entire police force and realized that the power structure of society had just changed. Xander became obsessed with becoming superhuman, and had bought or stolen every single piece of superhuman-related paraphernalia he could find – mystical trinkets, half-working gadgets, the organs of superhumans. The crown jewel was a nut he’d been unable to crack – a sample of extra-dimensional hypergel that he’d found in a crater a year ago.

,,

Xenith arrived, and with his augmentations – mystical tattoos, cybernetic limbs, fire-projecting eyes – proved more than a match for Magnum Opus. The altercation took the two of them outside, and once realizing that there were witnesses, Xenith took to the air, determined to flatten the neighborhood and start anew somewhere else with his socked-away funds.

,,

Danielle – worn out from the barrage of attacks, tough but not invulnerable – refused to surrender, but was unable to reach the airborne Xenith. However, coming face to face with the gel once more, with a year’s experience under her belt, led her to realize that there was more to her powers than she’d ever suspected – that she had an intuitive mental connection with the gel, able to reshape it with her powers into a suit to protect herself or anyone she was in contact with. Donning the suit also let to an epiphany about the nature of her powers – the information somehow encoded within the gel as raw information - and for the first time, Magnum Opus took flight.

,,

Xenith, confronting a better protected Magnum Opus, clashed with her in the sky for twenty minutes, and Xenith chose to run rather than face a hurricane. Magnum Opus in turn chose to battle the hurricane and rescue people rather than pursue. No one in New York died that night, though the property damage was still extensive – chief amongst them, the dockside warehouse that housed Xenith’s research.

,,

Claiming that all of her records were destroyed in the hurricane, Danielle had little trouble setting herself up with a new identity in the wake of the hurricane, and in the year since has been working at a legal aid clinic in Brooklyn, helping the socially disadvantaged navigate the legal system. As for Magnum Opus, her relationship with the authorities is still best described as “complicated,” but amongst the normal citizens of New York, most people know that there’s nothing to be afraid of when you see a black, red and white shape, should you look up in the sky.

,,

Powers: Magnum Opus is tremendously strong, fast, and damage resistant. When she first debuted, she could lift a car and survive small arms fire; since acquiring her current costume she has been seen lifting a 747 and surviving direct hits from heat seeking missiles, and is able to fly with no apparent means of propulsion. She is capable of extending the suit to protect anyone she's touching and has survived the vacuum of space.

Personal Information:

Identity: Jael (Jöka Skölsdottir)

Nicknames:

Occupation: Hero/Star-eater

Marital Status: n/a

Living Relatives: Sköll (Father)

Allegiance(s): Focht, self

Physical Traits:

Weight: 142 lbs

Height: 5'10"

Apparent age: mid 20's

Age: unknown

Gender: Female

Eye Color: gray / yellow

Hair Color: blonde / black

Handedness: Left

Appearance: Jael is taller than average, with long blonde hair and a lithe, athletic figure. Her eyes are a solid gray and her features are fine. She appears to have a very Nordic appearance physically. Jael has a costume she wears to bemuse Focht; the rest of the time she wear fine clothing that are borderline slutty.

Skills and Personality

Abilities/Special Skills: Jael is a good fighter and somewhat proficient at fighting, but only when in her birth form. Magics of the fae have inverted that and she's no longer a wolf-shaped jotun who becomes a human. Something she does better as a human is spellcasting. She has only started to study that while in Focht's care.

Personality: Jael is rude and abrasive to everyone but Focht, whom she has something like respect for. She won't say anything to him if she knows it will anger him. Unfortunately she's still working out what angers him. To everyone else, she's careless with her words and only rarely malicious. She has moments of melancholy, particularly when she considers the time she lost. Jael is often impatient with technology. Do not ask her to drive a car and it's best to avoid having her use the microwave.

Background

Jael was born Jöka to a minor jotun in Jotunheim. This was when Vikings were still a known thing on Earth. Bifrost ran to Midgard regularly, and when Jöka was but a young wolf, she slipped down to Midgard to explore. She didn't cause as much harm as others, so was largely ignored.

She saw human eons come and go; she saw the humans who revered/feared her people be swallowed by Christianity. She danced through history, changing her name depending on her mood and doing whatever sounded fun to her. Jöka played her games with humans, hunted and even killed and ate them. It was a game to her but the game ended the day she played with a fae. She thought he was an alf like she was used to, but he was something else entirely and his people took Jael eating him poorly. They caught her and caged her in the fairy mounds.

For centuries she rotted, unable to die, tormented and starved. Then two years ago, Focht found her and got her out. She still doesn't know what he did to get her released, only that he made some kind of arrangement with the fairie queen. She does know that she owes him her freedom, and she will honor that debt.

It's not like she has anything else to do until the world's end.

Complications

Honor - Gaes: Jael is forbidden to harm another being unless in defense of herself or others. Should she fail to uphold the gaes, she'll have to make amends to the person she harmed, or their next of kin.

Phobia - Confinement: Centuries of imprisonment by the Fae have left Jael psychologically incapable of being confined, even for 'safe' reasons.

Power Loss - Gaes: Jael is under the fae Gaes (see Honor - Gaes). Breaking this gaes even unintentionally will result in her locked in human form until she makes amends to the person wronged.

Prejudice - Fae: The Fae that Jael ran into were nothing like the alfs of Norse culture, and she badly misjudged them. After killing and eating one of them, she was quickly bound and imprisoned for centuries. She now hates them, almost mindlessly so.

Quirk - Star Watcher: Jael has a bizarre fascination with the stars. She has been known to lay on her back and stare at the night sky for hours. She knows obscure facts about the stars, and oftentimes talks about them as a hungry man talks about food.

Reputation - Child of Sköll: Jael is known to be a child of Sköll. Her destiny at Ragnarok is to help with the destruction of the universe. Her and her siblings' specific task is to eat the stars in the sky (much as her father will eat the sun). Jael's star is Sirius.

Gabriel Sebastian Stone

Bastion_zpsa4c9a25e.png

Personal Information:
Identity: Gabriel Sebastian Stone
Nicknames: 'Bastian, Gabe
Occupation: High School Super Teen
Marital Status: n/a
Living Relatives: Connie Wrigh (mother), John Wright (father), Megan Wright (step-sister)
Allegiance(s): Focht, his family and friends and his moral compass.

Physical Traits:
Weight: 183 lbs
Height: 6'0"
Apparent age: late teens, early 20's
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Eye Color: Blue
Hair Color: Black
Handedness: Left

Appearance: Gabriel is a big kid. Braod shoulders, corded muscles, it's like the kid was genetically predisposed to be perfect. Having grown up on a ranch in Montana Gabe is a hardy 'farm boy' and a natural athlete whose phyisique may have asmuch to do with his daily chores and work out as it does with his being a metahuman. His short black hair is usually disheveled in what most would call perpetual 'bed head'. His eyes are a give away that he's more human than human, they are a bright, shimmering blue like the South Pacific sea. He generally wears loose comfortable clothing, jeans a plain t-shirt and some work boots. Getting Gabe into 'fancy clothes' is a chore.

Skills and Personality
Abilities/Special Skills: Although know one really knows it, Gabriel is a wonderful artist, while limits himself to sketches and doodles, he's pretty talented. Aside from being a wonderful, natural athlete, Gabe doesn't really have anything spectacular about him.

Personality: Gabe is everything you'd expect a country boy to be: charming, polite, respectful and most of all, not afraid to speak his mind. Gabe is a typical teen who is interested in sports, video games, video games dealing with sports and, of course, eating. No one knows where the kid puts it all but he's always hungry. Raised on a ranch, Gabe is an incredibly hard worker and never stays still for very long. If there is a chore to do, he'll be the first to volunteer for it and rest assured it will be done right or he'll take it upon himself to do it again.

Gabe's one weakness, socially, is the ladies. The guy is bashful to a fault when he suspects the a girl might be interested in him, his brain locks up and he usually embarrasses himself. As long as he doesn't suspect any real attraction it all smooth sailing, his fast friendship with Fulcrum is a great example.

Background
Gabriel Stone is half alien. His father was from a distant world, Lantea in the Pegasus Galaxy, which has been very interested in Earth and its culture since very early in mankind's evolution. Unfortunately for his species the radiation given off by the yellow sun of Earth is cancerous and deadly to Lanteans, but at the same time affords them super human capabilities. When he was forced to land on Earth after debris damaged his craft, Briel-Ta had no way home and no way of reaching out and communicating with his people. Although it took several years, the radiation of the planet sickened the man and he eventually passed on, but not before he fell in love and left behind his legacy.

Sebastian's (he doesn't like going by Gabriel) father died of skin cancer two months before he was born. It never really stopped him from being an average kid though. Eventually his mother remarried to a guy named John Wright and with him came his daughter Megan Wright, who was only a couple months younger than Sebastian. Those three are really the only family Sebastian has ever known in home of Hardin, Montanta where the entire county's population is only 13,000.

Since puberty Sebastian's alien physiology began taking root and absorbing the radiation of Earth's yellow sun. Like a charging battery he has slowly grown more powerful and awakened more and more powers. Honestly hes scared. He was forced to quit the football team because parents were worried his throws would break ribs or his tackles would put kids in traction. He doesn't feel the urge to eat, or drink (although he never stops doing either), and his world has become a lonely place since he lost the need to sleep. The town he lives in thinks he's a freak and his friendships have dwindled to practically nothing.

His mother knows about his father's origins, but hasn't said anything, yet. She's afraid of losing her son the same way she lost the man of her dreams all those years ago. She fears what Sebastian will do once he finds out she's been lying to him all these years and keeping such a world shattering secret from him.

Sebastian's human side is whats keeping him alive and safe. The unique coupling of human and Lantean DNA has made him immune to the cancerous effects of Earths radiation. Sebastian's only real weakness is a high level frequency that stimulates the Delta Waves of the brain. This actually shuts down the portions of his brain that governs and regulates control of his Lantean genetics that permit his powers to function.

People in Bastions Life-

ConnieWright_zps9617c95b.jpg

Connie Wright - Bastions mom. As a mommas boy, Bastion loves his mother dearly and although he suffers the same embarrassing moments as any kid does, he still appreciates all she does for him. Loving to a fault Sebastian is the one thing she has left of the only man she ever truly found happiness with. She fears whats ahead for him and knows she cant protect him from the world but that doesn't stop her from trying.

JohnWright_zps2ef1728a.jpg

John Wright - John, like Connie, suffered the loss of his spouse, his wife, Lisa, died while giving birth to their daughter, Megan. A good, hard working man who has taught Bastion everything a man needs to know about being a man: honesty, integrity, hard work and, of course, football. Although not his real father, John has loved and cared for Bastion like he was all these years. Through good times and bad, every grounding and even through the talk John has done all he could to raise the boy right. Bastion looks up to and respects John a great deal, but can he help Bastion through the rough times ahead of him?

MeganWright_zpse2282e1c.jpg
Megan Wright - Megan is Bastions stepsister, but they've always treated each other like they were from the same parents. While completely human, if texting and Facebook were super powers Megan would be in the Cosmic tier of heroes (or villains, depending on the latest drama at school). Only a few months apart in age, the two get along like typical brother and sister. They have their share of bouts and arguments but in the end they are family nothing will ever come between that will it?

Cassandra_zpsf91c90c9.jpg

Cassandra Loyd - Cassy has been Gabe's best friend since they were in kindergarten together and their parent never ceased to embarrass them in front of guests with a picture of the two of them taking a bath together when they were only four. To spite they each have a copy of that photo framed in their rooms. In the last couple of years though things have gotten complicated for Cassy as she finds herself wanting more from 'Bastian than she knows he's willing to give. She's crushing big time and has no idea why since she's never felt so close and safe to anyone in her life. The problem is that Gabe is like a brother to her and he's too dense to pick up on her subtle clues. Perhaps somethings just aren't meant to be.

Ryujin

,,

Background:

,,

Dash Carpenter and his father John (a fairly wealthy local businessman) had been at acrimonious loggerheads for some time over Dash's status as the teenage prodigal son - but Dash still loved his father, so John's sudden (and relatively young death) of a heart attack was frightening and painful. It turned out from the will, that his father had left him enough trust funded and securities money to make sure Dash never had to work - on a mysterious condition.

,,

Dash had to go to Japan's rural mountains, find a Master Kisuke Ren and 'meet his approval.' The trip brought Dash to the mysterious Inner Spirit Court, a mystic community and order of martial artists (primarily from East and Southeast Asia) whom had actually fostered John Carpenter as a foundling orphan. Master Ren had taught John, and 'meeting his approval' meant succeeding as a student and becoming a member of the Inner Spirit Court.

,,

The expectations placed on Dash were new and strenuous, but he learned from them, unlocking the powers of chi and accorded the status of a full and capable practitioner of the Wind Dragon style - which blended speed, fluidity and adaptability as so to make him nearly-unmatched in combat.

,,

When Dash was released and returned home - he found his old preferences... less exciting. It was the push for inner growth that led him to don the heroic mantle of Ryujin.

Complications

Motivation - Thrills: Dash finds the usual brand of trust fun enjoyment somewhat pale compared to the mental and physical challenges of martial arts and superheroism to exercise it.

Secret Identity: Dash Carpenter, Trust Fundie

Relationships: Master Ren, and the various brothers of the Inner Spirit Court, spread worldwide. It is traditional for the various members to lend aid to one another when requested, and repay these debts of service in kind in the future.

Rivalry: Normally, one might expect the hero to in such martial arts tales to be the talented and determined student against a more privileged, arrogant, favored disciple of the master. Dash was too caught up in transition to see it that way, but Li-Wei (Lee) Cao did, being Dash's bitter rival during the course of their respective teaching. But eventually it simmered down, and the two are more or less friends. Their rivalry and competition is not reduced in spirit when they cross paths - both seeing the more good-natured bouts of one-upmanship as a healthy safeguard against stagnation.
